Get the Consumer Reports car buying guide for reliability and a new car report (it's the GDGT for cars!). Go test drive each model you want--doesn't matter where, don't enter into a deal at that point. Email auto dealerships to compete on price for exactly what you want. They all work that way now (only suckers walk in with no prior cost estimate). Then realize the parking will cost more than your payment because you're in S.F. ;)

I would shop around online to see what's available within your budget. Before I bought my hybrid, I window shopped online for price ranges and got a quote from Costco. Then I used that quote to bargain with my local dealer and finally bought my current car.

don't buy new. You want to buy 1 or 2 years old. That will save you on depreciation. As stated above, check out Consumer Reports, well worth the money you pay. Personally, I'd look very closely at the Fords. They've done a phenomenal job in the last 4 to 5 years building quality cars with some style and function. Seriously, I had the same trouble for a long spell earlier this year. Key question: Do they startle you awake or out of dreaming? They did me, so I'd roll over and they'd start afresh. Eventually I got a prescription for Ambien to get a good night's sleep. Unexpected consequence: Anxiety dreams got resolved. Still had the same dreams, but by staying asleep my mind confronted the anxieties, ultimately solving them. Seems the key was staying asleep long enough. YMMV.

It is also my understanding that for most people the signal indicator on the phone decreases but the call isn't dropped, so it's a non-issue, even if you don't place a bumper on the phone.

Yes, despite the software reading or not calculating signal strength correctly, or whether or not you need a band to keep your hand from messing with the signal, it all really boils down to whether or not it's dropping calls. However, bears and dragons are distinctly different: Dragons will drop golden fleeces, magical weapons, and scales to be used for the creation of magical armors; meanwhile Bears most often will just have a pelt, and not even the one you need to finish the quest.
