"The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has teamed up with engineers from the private sector to develop a next-generation space toilet, which they hope to complete within the next five years. Clean and easy to use, the envisioned space toilet is designed to be worn like a diaper around the astronaut’s waist at all times. Sensors detect when the user relieves him or herself, automatically activating a rear-mounted suction unit that draws the waste away from the body through tubes into a separate container. In addition to washing and drying the wearer after each use, the next-generation space toilet will incorporate features that eliminate unwanted sound and odor. " - Jess Lee

"Just being in an urban environment, they have found, impairs our basic mental processes. After spending a few minutes on a crowded city street, the brain is less able to hold things in memory, and suffers from reduced self-control." - Jess Lee

I wonder if this applies the same to people who are used to the city as well as newcomers? - David Wynn

I think they have to qualify what kind of cities they're talking about. A number of old European cities are walkable, have greenery, are beautiful, etc. I see those as very different from, say, Houston. - Spidra Webster
@David: Good question. Maybe growing up in a city is good exercise for your brain because it keeps it constantly active. - Jess Lee
Among my friends, I'm the only one who prefers to vacation in big cities rather than retreating 'back to nature'. - Andrew C
growing up in a small town in Borneo (you know, orangutans...) and now living in downtown Toronto, I have to disagree with the article. I was slow and dumb then. still is. I don't see the deterioration. - Alvin Woon
even just when in a crowded shopping centre or similar busy place I go insane, feel dumb, get a headache and need to run out of it ASAP. traffic stresses you, you all know that. I LOVE when "scientists" say things that seem pretty obvious to anyone by just having been in that situation themselves... still I suppose it helps to spread the idea, though. I hear of a lot of people who MOVE OUT of the city and go live in a smaller village just outside of it, so that they can "relax" in the weekends, for example. - Daniele Muscetta
