"Today we are launching version 2 of the FriendFeed API for beta testing. We focused on making the API simpler to use, and we added number of compelling new features." Documentation: http://friendfeed.com/api...
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
nice, good to see OAuth support, this will enable a larger 3rd party ecosphere around FriendFeed, I hope
- Jeroen De Miranda
After going through the documentation and playing around with some feeds, I love the fact that you can now see the subscriber lists of people who have their feeds set to private as long as you are subscribed to them and authenticate (mimicking the main site functionality). One thing that's absent is a discussion of Direct Messages. Do they show up in feeds if you authenticate? How do we find just direct messages?
- Mark Trapp
Mark: direct messages are accessed using the feed ID "filter/direct". Read more about feed IDs at http://friendfeed.com/api.... Also direct messages appear in the "home" feed.
- Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: ahhh, I see it now. I missed it when skimming that list over. Thanks!
- Mark Trapp
Can you post the wget version of the command line?
- Gabe
Gabe: wget --user=bgolub --password=passwd --post-file=MyPhoto.jpg http://friendfeed-api.com/v2... should work. In theory. Edit: nope. I'm not sure it's possible to do with wget.
- Mark Trapp
Gabe: wget doesn't support multipart forms as a design decision. If you post a file, FriendFeed returns a 404, and if you post data, the query is too long for wget to handle.
- Mark Trapp
Woowoo, bgolub's password is “passwd” ;-)
- Amit Patel
Amit: I wonder how many people tested that :)
- Benjamin Golub
Thanks to bgolub posting his password, I now have all of FriendFeed's secret documents about notorious users, useless metrics, Justin Timberlake's promoting FF on Oprah's show, hiring Colbert as a spokesperson, Ev Williams being just a “distraction”. TechCrunch is going to love this! ;)
- Amit Patel
Yes big big thanks to the whole team for all their hard work!!

Roll call...this can be great if we all participate. Add yourself to this shared map. I created a placemark on the 2 major intersections near where I live.
- Mark Krynsky
Mo, I'm a newb to the shared maps stuff, but I turned on collaboration and allowed anyone to edit the map. There should be an edit button and then you can add a placemark.
- Mark Krynsky
Robert bought me a new house in the northern suburbs.
- Andrew Trinh
@Bec...nice. You are the first brave female on here.
- Mark Krynsky
Cool idea, Mark! I was thinking something like this would be fun the other day. Duly added myself - or at least the nearest big intersection. ;)
- Jandy
Mousing over the usernames shows your Google profile info...cool.
- Mark Krynsky
I marked a bus stop near my house. But not TOO near. :)
- Nine
If you haven't yet...go add FriendFeed to your Google Profile...it will then auto-discover and allow you to add a ton of other profiles you have.
- Mark Krynsky
Thanks for the profile tip - I hadn't updated it since I moved here!
- Jandy
Thanks guys. This is coming along nicely. It's great to have as a resource to see where everyone is from. Hopefully this can become a standard feature on FF one day.
- Mark Krynsky
Canterbury, Melbourne, Victoria added
- Duncan Riley
Current count: 13 US, 11 Europe, 3 Australia, 1 Middle East. Happy to see many others add themselves overnight. Hoping more will continue this.
- Mark Krynsky
I've read the instruction and still don't see the button thing to add myself. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now.
-
@Jill, make sure you are logged into your Google account and then click on the edit button above the list of names already on the map. You will then see the pushpin in the upper left hand side of the map.
- Mark Krynsky
Added. Seems like there are a lot of us in the Bay Area...we must do a get together at some point.
- Neal "thePuck" Jansons
@Neal yea, we really need a FriendFeed meetup. I might be up there for Web 2.0 in March...or we can have one at SXSW if a large number of us are going. Let's plan and get the Upcoming page going.
- Mark Krynsky
@Mark Not gonna make SXSW, but am definitely down for working on an FF get together. March is long enough away to make sure plenty of people have time to plan ahead. I added you on Upcoming so we can start coordinating it. Anyone else interested/want to help set this up?
- Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool!
- Mark Krynsky
Pinned! sheesh this just cost me 1/2 hour of time as I scrolled thru all the folks :)
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Except for Bret, there are no FriendFeeders on the penninsula between San Jose and San Francisco. So much for Silicon Valley early adopters.
- Ryan Kuder
Cluelessness alert! I'm not seeing how to add my pushpin!
- Hutch Carpenter
For some reason whenever i use google maps in creation-mode, it defaults to some other maps I've used, not the one I'm trying to access - ah, figured it out. Had to de-activate some other collaborative maps
- anna sauce
Added. What a great way to see who's on FF in Austin, TX!
- Carter ♥ HTML5
Indeed ! that's was very nice! Have you done anything special about this Bret? (Like twitter's folks)
- directeur
very nice. anyone could guess Friendfeed would make it.

http://www.google.com/reader... I'm glad you asked this right now. I just realized that several people are following me and I didn't even know it. I hope it hasn't been this way for long!
- Michael Fidler
Just noticed that Reader now allows grouping of people you follow! Wondering: is Reader going to become a competitor (instead of complement) to FriendFeed?
- Chris Rogers
@rogersdc / Chris, Google Reader is obviously been trying to become more social, but I'd really like to see FF come out with a bookmarklet that makes sub'ing RSS feeds to FF easier/faster. Right now it's a manual process involving either a new Group/Room or Imaginary Friend. Should be 2 clicks tops.. Also see: http://friendfeed.com/alexsch...
- Alex Schleber
Here is mine : http://www.google.fr/reader.... I share (mainly on French sites and blogs) about libraries, literature and arts, human and social sciences, photography :-)
- Nadine Pestourie
LOL here we go again :o) http://www.google.com/reader... I share a lot of blogs and funny stuff that I read, it's neat how I can share and it gets posted all over by friendfeed.
- David Gross
http://www.google.com/reader... - I share items about productivity, gaming, movies, and misc. stuff from the Google "cool" via Recommendations feed. Thanks Kol for starting this thread because I've been trying to cut down on the number of feeds I subscribe to and instead just follow interesting people.
- Dusty Edenfield
Svartling: good point about adding people to groups. I noticed I couldn't comment on items that were shared by some users.
- Dusty Edenfield
I've (we) written a lot of more good tips on how to use Google Reader in Google Reader comments. It's too bad we don't have permalinks in Greader so we can share our notes and comments. Otherwise I could have posted a link here. Here are some on friendfeed: http://friendfeed.com/svartli...
- Svartling
Thanks for posting this Kol. Never paid any attention to my shared items folder before but just did!
- Martha
The conversation is really blowing up (in a good way) on Reader. The most important reminder currently is to set up groups and allow commenting. That is NOT on by default!
- Vince DeGeorge
Thank you all. I think I have subscribed you all now (except those feed in languages I don't understand) Here is mine again: http://www.google.com/reader...
- Svartling
I've started to follow a few of the people here but there's quite a few, so will take me a while :) - My currently fairly bare feed is: http://www.google.com/reader...
- Roy Herrod
There are a few entries here you might like to read to help you. This one: http://ff.im/6CkQj explains about adding people to groups to allow them to comment and why some don't stay in groups. In this one: http://ff.im/6F9pQ I suggest a way to track a large number of shared items using PostRank. This: http://ff.im/6Ci0P and this: http://ff.im/6AM35 has a few tips on using GReader as a lifestreaming service. And this: http://ff.im/6EMT1 gives a few examples of GReader bundles.
- Kol Tregaskes
Those of you above whom I already follow on FF/Twitter/etc., I've subscribed to your feeds. As for the rest of you: if you follow me on GReader, I'll follow you back.
- Dennis Jernberg
I'm sharing some pages now, including a few of my past blog entries.
- Dennis Jernberg
Because I have issues with data duplication, I have merged this list with the google reader shares room feeds. You can view the Google spreadsheet at http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc...
- Rob Diana
There are a bunch of shared feeds that I could not resolve the Google username for because they did not have a named profile set up.
- Rob Diana

It would be really handy to have all these shared feeds as an opml file. Has anyone added everyone? Care to export an opml of the shared feeds?
- Paul Jacobson
I'm http://www.google.com/reader... Not really comfortable with the custom URL though since it can only be your gmail username. Makes it really easy for spamspiders I think.

http://www.google.com/reader... mostly webdev, photography news, music, world news which i get interested. plus half of them may be article in Japanese. sorry. :-p

Teddington (across the river from Kingston Upon Thames, is where I think I'd like to live. Just 'cos it's cheaper than everywhere else around it. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I've checked rental prices in the area several times over the last 2 years and Teddington is definitely cheaper. I'm not buying, no way I can afford that. ;-) All a pip-dream anyway, need a steady job and I've not had that for a while. :-(

- Neill Adamson
@Neill, that's great. You just got us to the 6th continent. I highly doubt we can hit 7 as there surely can't be someone from Antarctica that FriendFeeds.
- Mark Krynsky
The Antarctica challenge: OK, here's the plan: we need to contact Eli Duke (http://twitter.com/elisfanclub) he's tweeting from McMurdo Station, Antarctica. We have until February (some background I just found: on his 1st stint in the Antarctic he was a dish washer. In 2006 he wrote a functioning RubyOn Rails site, got burned out and tried to give it away on Craig's List...unsuccessfully--it's back online now http://listyourlist.com/ . Why is Erhan Erdogan in the middle of the atlantic ocean on the map? Is he in the Bermuda Triangle or something? lol
- Alan Le
@Micah, great job on recruitment. Eli has added himself and we now have all 7 continents filled.
- Mark Krynsky
Erhan probably got moved accidentally. When I got to the page, and was moving the map, I accidently grabbed someone and moved them to the middle of the Atlantic. Thankfully, it was someone who used a special icon, so it was easy to search and put them back.
- Anika
Hmm, apparently I'm just up the road from Haggis.
- Rob H.
I just added myself. Curious - how do you get different placemarks? I like the Google-looking ones that aren't quite raindrops.
- Tamar Weinberg
Just an addendum to Spidra's explanation: To go back and edit, click the pushpin then click the "Edit" button (look waaay to the left on the page). Then you can click the icon to change, and you'll see Save button next to "Edit"
- Micah
Oh cool. Nice job reviving this guys. Hopefully we get another good round of users to add themselves.
- Mark Krynsky
Kind of frustrating to see how much time I spent on this map and then to find out someone had probably saved their changes over mine - hence mine was gone this entire time. Others should also check for this. In any event, thanks, Spidra, for the tip :) My other pet peeve is Google Maps scrolling incessantly out of nowhere. (Hi Jess.)
- Tamar Weinberg
Added myself yesterday. I notice, thought, that you have to flip to page 2 ... Can't we show all the FFers on one map, regardless of the page ?
- Ahsan Ali

For Paul, I assume there is an incredible amount of self-satisfaction. Buzz has really brought the FriendFeed experience to a new audience, regardless of its name. Thanks for all your contributions, Paul.
- Louis Gray
I really like Buzz, very cool... glad to see Google release something that integrates a ton of their existing portfolio of products together! Buzz is truly a game changer... wow
- Susan Beebe
Maybe we should all agree to just go use Buzz, let them shut down FriendFeed, and Paul, Bret, et al can concentrate on Facebook... ;-)
- Ken Sheppardson
It must be bittersweet. Well put, Louis. Well put.
- Akiva
I've had a FriendFeed gadget in my Gmail left column for ages ;)

I was watching the announcement with my brother and I kept saying "just like Friendfeed", "just like Friendfeed", "just like Friendfeed" ...
- Alejandro
STILL not showing up in mine!!! It does show up on my iPhone. I've been playing with it for the past hour, but really wish I could see in in a real web browser on a real computer!
- Jeff P. Henderson
Jeff same problem here. Very frustrating!

its like Pauls child FF reunion with its elder brother gmail :)
- sirishkumar
Paul, one thing that I am sure to miss on Buzz is, not being able to see all the awesome Googler's and Xoogler's feeds that I see here on Friendfeed. I wish there is someway Buzz remedies this. Really bummed about this. :(
- Space Cowboy
Paul, same feeling here, but now that I see buzz map in iPhone/web app, that's pretty cool stuff.
- Orlando Pozo
Paul, we need something like buzz map for friendfeed ;).
- Orlando Pozo
Paul, Gbuzz privacy settings really suck, even blocking and reporting people as spammers don't work :S
- Orlando Pozo

Paul, did you know Google was working on Buzz when you sold FriendFeed?
- Richard Cunningham
I love how friendfeed, with all of the love and effort that all of us have vested in it, gets to keep on reaching new places, even if it's not *exactly* FF. Nice one.

He has hundreds of transformers toys (and some Lego toys hanging from the ceiling) surrounding him at every angle. This was part of our tour today of Industrial Light and Magic (the folks who made Star Wars, among many many other movies). When we walked in he quickly hid what was on the screen. Hmmm.

ha...wow...i don't feel the need to clean my office anymore!

The computer and monitor need some work.
- Louis Gray
Louis: I was actually surprised by most of the monitors I saw at ILM. I have more glass on my desk. But most did have two monitors with a high-speed computer (and they had a kick ass data center for rendering everything). The models that we saw were unreal. I'll try to upload some of those next.

- Zu from AOD
Yeah, I remember similar pics (not of transformers) but of other film work in progress when I was a loyal sub'er to "Starlog" mag. Anyone ever take that here? http://www.starlog.com/
- Melanie Reed
This is such a cool photo Robert. Looks like one you'd see in Life magazine. What lens did you use?
- Mark Krynsky
I mostly only use one lens lately: my 17-40 F4.0 lens on a Canon 5D MK II. This was shot at 6400 ISO. Which is totally crazy. I remember when Kodak came out with 1000 ISO film that was only Black and White and had lots of grain.
- Robert Scoble
Scoble, yeah I understand him not being prepared, it's just a very striking shirt, definitely an attention grabber, though the environment pulls you away.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Melanie, I wasn't really describing plaid so much as the colors of it. ;)

What about famous people and royalty - are they going to be scanned? And if not, why not?
- WoH: Minding her Steves
I find those images to be dubious in that the clothed photo is clearly not that of the naked woman. The photos that I've seen tend to show clothing as well which would mean that if you inverted them you'd still see the clothing. I don't think these scanners are a great idea, mainly because they don't solve anything. however the FUD surrounding them on both sides of the argument is leading to too little actual truth being told.
- Kenton
MVB: so you can opt to be patted down? I hadn't realised that. Though if you had a colostomy or similar that would be a terrible indignity and possibly disastrous whichever way it was done.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
I think these images have been shown to be 'shopped. However, the scans are quite detailed, and if they are blurred for privacy then they have little security purpose (which is already minimal since there are lots of other places to hide bombs and there are infinitely more tactics and targets that they don't address).
- Tinfoil 2.0
And yes, the TSA still allows pat-downs as an alternative (I'll take a pat-down from someone looking me in the eye over some perv in a hidden room doing who-knows-what with my image any day of the week). Not to mention the unknown health effects of this kind of radiation. This program is wrong in so many ways. The devices do have hard disks and USB (allegedly 'disabled' in some unknown...
- Tinfoil 2.0
LogEx, they say that all they did was use a simple program to "invert" the images. If the image of the woman in the clothes was inverted we would see a picture of a woman with a green top and blue pants, not a nude woman. Of course, she isn't even standing in the same way etc.
- Kenton
these images are fake. photoshopped from this model http://www.f1online.de/f1onlin... If you invert real body scanner images you don't get full colors or other details...
- ezekiel
@ezekiel's got it. the brown and black images are inverses of each other, but the picture is not a real scan to begin with. I don't know what the color clothed picture is supposed to be.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Hang on a minute - are you saying that someone has faked these pictures?!? But...but..I saw them! On the Internet! They MUST be real!!!
- WoH: Minding her Steves
WOH, exactly my point. The FUD surrounding this whole thing is getting ridiculous.
- Kenton
If I invert a black and white picture, shouldn't it stay black and white?
- Johnny
Notice that the guy who wrote it writes for Prison Planet, which is a nest of kooks if ever there were one.
- Joey Gibson
@Johnny, do it and you'll see. It must not be exactly black *too lazy to check the curves*
- Tinfoil 2.0
keep in mind that I think it's the US where they're banning the use of this machine by minors because the image produced could be considered of a paedophilic nature by the law. And yes, you can see quite a bit of detail from these things - tho the linked images are fake.
- alphaxion
The images (not inverted) are from : http://www.bild.de/BILD... , as clearly linked in the prisonplanet article [edit: sorry, which was reprinted at doomdaily], and BTW, those original scanner images clearly have a blue tinge. A simple invert colors operation in Paint.NET resulted in exactly the brownish colours shown in the prisonplanet link.
- Andrew C (✓)
OMG that is freaking awful - privacy invasion to the max ... damn!
- Susan Beebe
where do I have to apply for airport security jobs?
- Bafman
Hey, don't become a security if you really want to see the ass and not behind a gun!
- Wulffy
But what if I have a pistol duct-taped to my face? HOW WILL THEY DETECT IT THEN.
- Akiva
@MVB if she's a aunt, she must walk in with a niece...in any case I trust Bernoulli's principle.
- Bafman
@matthew why don't they simply get rid of the scanner and resort to compulsory strip searches of every passenger and see how people feel then. Because this is all these scanners amount to - a strip search.
- alphaxion
because they both have the same issue - total abuse of human rights, only one is a little more convenient than the other due to technology, and so we're supposed to find this perfectly acceptable? I, for one, will request a pat down rather than walk through a technological strip search where there is no warrent for such an action.
- alphaxion
My understanding is that the current crop of body scanners uses software to "cartoonify" the image. body parts are deliberately fuzzed out. So this is kinda moot.
- The original Kevin
@Kevin - the article (and yes, I know there's question of it's credibility) says that the body parts aren't blured because that would basically sacrifice the security benefits (I mean, you could hide stuff in that area....). @Matthew, you may not see it as a violation but some of us who aren't really comfortable with strangers seeing us naked (and potentially persisting that image to embarrass us later), do see it as such. I wear clothes for a reason.
- Lindsay
Even if it is effective, I don't want to use it. I would opt for the less effective route of a pat down if I had to choose. If it's not effective, then yeah, let's drop it. But the article wasn't discussing the effectiveness. It was about the privacy implications.
- Lindsay
Lindsay, I based my comment on an NPR interview last week. It said they've developed an algorithm that displays anomalies on what amounts to an outline of the body. Specific anatomical features are not shown. Of course, I haven't seen an image so I don't know how true that is. And for those who think a pat-down is better than this technology, they can be even more intrusive with the added "benefit" of a total stranger actually touching your body. Just sayin'...
- The original Kevin
Matthew, the human rights issue is absolutely not secondary. If it's not freedom we're fighting for, then what? Would you give up all of your essential freedoms to guarantee absolute safety? It's not even a realistic trade-off. These scanners are not effective against many threats, are very costly, have potential detrimental health effects, are extremely intrusive, and terrorists will...
- Tinfoil 2.0
I will definitely choose a pat-down over this if selected for secondary screening.
- Tinfoil 2.0
What's theoretical about it? These are installed in US airports today, and there are plans for many more. If you say rights are irrelevant at airport screening, then we should all just get cavity searched.
- Tinfoil 2.0
I've had a pat-down at the airport, it's not bad at all. At least there's the honesty of a real person looking you in the eyes when he does it. And no possibility of data persistence.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Would it affect your opinion at all if you knew that Chertoff, one of the major proponents of the technology, had an undisclosed vested interest via having two manufacturers of this equipment as his clients?
- Tinfoil 2.0
The burden of proof for effectiveness rests with the government, with open public debate to follow, BEFORE rolling these things out.
- Tinfoil 2.0
+Log Ex....same as Cheney having vested interest in the Immigration Detention Centers....
- bcultral
It's not a nudity hang-up with me, I'll strip down in a closed room for a guard (assuming no cameras, and everyone is subject including congress and other dignitaries - no special privileges) if that's what will REALLY work for a 100% guarantee, though I will fight for those who are insulted, offended, or just plain have religious or other conscientious objections to getting strip-searched. It's basic rights at stake with no due process.
- Tinfoil 2.0
They are bringing one into CMH; initially, they will just use it as a supplementary device
- RAPatton
I just hope I am not in violation of FB policies by posting a naked woman...:(
- bcultral
I was patted down in an airport in 2006 or 2007. One person was involved, and I was fully dressed. It is preferable to having PEOPLE looking at images of my unclothed body, and it does not make politicians and their bedmates richer.
- MiniMage, enterRUPPted
from Nambu
If only it were that simple Matthew. That spectrum of preferences is only one of MANY issues with the use of this technology.
- Tinfoil 2.0
It doesn't work, it's a technology designed to fail. Obscuring images for privacy hinders the accuracy. Does nothing for body cavities. Also, if our main threat vector is people coming in from overseas, why install these for use on purely domestic flights, or outbound for that matter (other than for fairness to other countries we expect to use them)? And then of course there's the easy...
- Tinfoil 2.0
I just want to point out that if it appears you get "full living color" from inverting an image from one of these machines (be it "millimeter-wave" or "backscatter"), that is just an effect of the color scale chosen to represent the data. These images are basically just intensity charts, and any color scale could be used. And you certainly don't add information to an image by inverting the colors.
- Eivind
If that comment was for me, Jason, I know they're not actual scanner images (and rather illustration images from Bild which have magically been inverted). I'm just pointing out the ignorance of the author of this article. If he possessed the basic understanding of how these scanners work, i.e. that they *do not* create negative nude photographies of the subject, there would be no article.
- Eivind
