For a class I'm teaching tomorrow, I emailed two alternate sketches of outlines to the prof. One is pretty standard (finding primary sources), the other one was pretty out there. She went for the out there one. Woohoo!
So now I'll be showing how to find primary sources (particularly cultural artifacts), and then we'll have a discussion. We'll talk about the nature of the sources that are available to us (largely in curated collections that people have spent a lot to assemble and digitize) and whether that meshes well with the mantra of literary cultural critics that there should be no "orthodox" or "canonical" set of cultural artifacts that everyone draws on.

This is what comes of sending me the class readings for the day. :-)

This makes me sad that I haven't had a class you've taught for since freshman year. You'll have to give me the lowdown.

I may have once blocked someone into a space like that. There are rumors that he walked to my car to confront me, but turned around when I stepped out. That's all hearsay, though.

If it's a Nissan Cube, the Chevy symbol on the front license plate makes very little sense.
- Curdy G
:) that's where I took out the license plate - purely coincidentally making it look like a Chevy! I hadn't noticed until you said that.
- WoH: Minding her Botts
I think it just looks similar to the Chevy symbol. However, the sides are not angled. Trick of the shadows.

Oh. :) I thought it was an airbrushed Chevy symbol; but now I see it's just a blurred license plate inside of a black license plate frame. Silly me.

"It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life … you give them a piece of you. They didn’t ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn’t your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like “maybe we should be just friends” or “how very perceptive” turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It’s a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. Nothing should be able to do that. Especially not love. I hate love. - Neil Gaiman, The Sandman: The Kindly Ones"

Can life be built with an alien biochemistry? Scientists are currently building alternative kinds of genetic codes, and showing how they can evolve. While scientists say the laws of physics and chemistry might favor carbon-based life resembling ours, life could exist in more diverse forms, if it included a code-carrying system like DNA.

I don't understand why people are willing to wait in line at Walmart, Target, the grocery store, fast food places but get angry if there is a line at the library.
I think it's because I don't believe that people understand what a library really is. It isn't what you had in your elementary class. It's a similar but different beast.

AT&T is sending out similar notices to top users. I am not sure how Sprint does it, but AT&T has started throttling their users who are on a now unavailable unlimited plan by 99% (an article equated the throttled speed to dial-up).
- Chris Topher
I'm tempted to start leaving my phone playing a long video each night when I go to sleep, towards the end of the billing cycle, just so I can get throttled and get in on the class action lawsuit that's sure to come ;)
- Tinfoil 2.0
The article about AT&T said that the featured customer in the article was being throttled at about 2.3 GB of data, when they offer a 3GB plan for the same fee with no throttling. In my opinion, no cell phone company should offer unlimited plans without knowing for sure that they can handle top usage.
- Chris Topher
I just spoke with my brother who works in the telecom biz and he said just the same thing. Class action suits are just around the corner. On the phone with their c/s now. Tilting at windmills I think I am.

I am just pissed that I was sold a contract for unlimited data and now they are telling me that I use too much. They claim that Hulu+ is a Bit Torrent site.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Customer retention is telling me that they don't support Netflix, Hulu+, HBO2GO or any streaming service.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
And they finally came out and just said that their unlimited data plan is NOT actually unlimited and I use too much. Just how much they can't say, but the retention team member will be calling me back with that info tomorrow. #SprintDeceptiveSalesPractice

Y'all have no idea how relieved I am to discover that I am not alone in making the association between this light fixture design and well-formed boobage! All those years of tacit guilt! I mean, as if the glass shape wasn't enough, they go and add those perfectly erect "nipple caps"... Who are you trying to kid, lighting designers?!!
- Mark J Subtly Severe
from Android
Meh, I'm unimpressed. We have the Nippledome here after all.
- Lix
Thanks for the offer to take the brass as spare, will graciously pass. ;)
- Janet-The Bottley Crue
Well, I figured I'd offer after making the offending remarks vis a vis your lights. :(

My wife and I call these "boob lights". Sometimes even in lighting stores...

My father never knew his father. He was an only child, raised by his mother. He never knew why his father either left or was kicked out -- his mother would never tell him. In his late '50s, due to a random web page I wrote about my family, my father was discovered by his half-sister.
It turns out my grandfather had started a new family, even given his new first-born son the same name as my father. My father learned this from his newly found half-sister. He also found out that his father had passed away 10 years before.

All his life, my father loved Jewish culture, had Jewish friends, read Jewish humor books (mostly Leo Rosten).
- Stephen Mack
My father had absolutely zero idea until he was 59 that his father was Jewish.
- Stephen Mack
His mother was Catholic. She never talked about anything Jewish at all. He found it on his own.
- Stephen Mack
I don't know much about anything, but to me there's something to the idea that a Jewish identity is a mix of culture and upbringing and also in the blood.

Some of the only non-incriminating video from last weekend. Scott juggling. Which is pretty impressive considering he had more than a few drinks in him. http://youtu.be/LawEOa85-WQ
Good morning, Stephen & Adam! I hope the day finds you both well! :) Stephen, that reference is lost on me. Clearly, I have some catching up to do here on FF! ;)
- Kelli H.
She's focusing on what's most important to her at this moment...the coffee! And good morning, lovely lass!
