From Boing Boing: "Extreme ironing might be the coolest sport that didn't make it into the Olympics this year. Started over a decade ago by UK knitwear factory worker Phil Shaw, it requires four simple criteria: a man, an iron, an ironing board, and a crazy natural environment that makes people think, holy crap I can't believe he's ironing on that thing! Shaw calls extreme ironing "the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well pressed shirt."" - Mark Trapp

"oderint dum metuant: Let them hate so long as they fear. (A favorite saying of Caligula.)" Change "fear" to "envy," and I suspect that explains most of the flack Robert Scoble has encountered. Scoble is the Usain Bolt of the lifestreaming world -- no one else can keep up. - Sean McBride
Seems like this happens often. Leave it to Scoble to get this type of reaction frequently and think that it's not his fault. - Dave Huston

Where does all this bitterness come from? Loneliness, Stressful life, sitting along in front of a screen and trying to be 'social'? I think its a neat study.... - Mrinal Desai
Mrinal: I think ALL of us could envision a world which is (a) more fair (b) better by measure X,Y,Z. What we do with the dichotomy between ideal and practice is a good measure of a person. Look at Nelson Mandela. I've known people who talked about Satanic abuse as a child. Met former slaves. Some people are treated a LOT rougher than most of us. - Mitchell Tsai
Hateful people are, well, full of hate. It helps to remember that 99% of the time, that hate has nothing to do with you or me or anybody else they direct their venom against. - Dawn

* Stage 4: Adding in multiple ad networks
* Stage 5: Building up brand sales (rep, vertical, direct, or otherwise)" - Mona N.
Sometimes the most useful things that I write are in email messages. This time I tried to translate an email message to a blog post (which I don't think was entirely successful). but I thought it was worth a try. - Melissa Chang

My son had corrective boots with bolts on the bottom and a bar bolted across them and he succeeded in walking at 10 months (we had to take the boots off out of pity). Once they start most are absolutely determined. I am sure it won't be long. - Brian Sullivan

I think there are two types of toddlers, when learning to walk. 1) Carefully pull yourself up on furniture, keep one hand on something solid, reach for the next handhold. If you feel unsteady, sit down immediately. 2) Lean in the direction you want to go, try to keep your feet under you, and hope for the best. - Denton Gentry

Being a Dad rules. As a father of 4, I have learned that even a geek like me can be a hero to somebody. I am usually the one cooking the yummy meals and the kids cheer enthusiastically. Being on the computer all the time used to bug my wife as newlyweds, but now we both have our own desks and PCs and run the family and have fun online together. Great article. - Josh Haley
Mine recently turned 6 mos and I've regained a lot of the routine and some of the leisure time that I used to take for granted before her, but that lack of morning time that you mentioned remains. I remember spending at least a good hour online before even heading to work and now I'm lucky if I get online at all before I head out. Totally worth it though. Having kids (or kid .. in my case) ... changes your life forever. For some it's difficult. For others, it comes naturally. It goes fast (really fast!) so enjoy it. Don't miss anything! Sounds like a good healthy group here which is refreshing, Louis amazed me when he wrote one of his best blog posts ever awaiting delivery in the hospital. - Charlie Anzman
One of the advantages of email - and to a limited extent, FriendFeed and Twitter - is that they allow for asynchronous communication, so you can contact people on your schedule. Helpful if you have (fun) interruptions in your daily life. - Ontario Emperor

Thanks for the nod Louis! You're a great addition to the world of fatherhood. It's tough getting used to the change in lifestyle, but the changes all produce a much more balanced and satisfying life. “I saw Lindsay Donaghe post on funny signs and it made me recall one I saw at a resturaunt in Chicago "Handicapped Restrooms Located Down Stairs" and to the left was 3 flights of stairs.”
“I often express the boredom I experience at my job. The typical reply is "well thats work." I must admit I have always beleived in finding something you love to do and am rather put off when I hear this reply. Is this your experience with work and if not how did you break the mold?”
I quit my job and started my own company, which eliminated the boredom, but added a whole layer of other issues. I know it's not for everyone, but it's been an awesome ride for me. I totally agree with you, though, that work shouldn't be boring all the time. I mean, I understand some occasional drudgery, but full-time boredom is a drag. Maybe it's time to look for something more challenging or interesting? Or to try to move onto different projects or a new department? Or maybe you could start a project on your own initiative, see where that might lead you? Just some ideas. - Melissa Chang

Great input Melissa thank you for sharing your experiences. I often find myself considering some entrepreneurial ventures but have not yet found that perfect idea. Raoul, I can definitely relate to your experiences. Mr Ontario Emp I could definitely live with a balance that was skewed towards not being bored! - Geoff Schultz

so what drove the dip ? seems like a classic bell curve ! - Peter Dawson
Blog traffic dipped as the Blogger's increased use of FF caused him to post less on his blog, thus less traffic to the blog. - Susan Beebe
Didn't drop to previous levels either! - Mo Kargas
FriendFeed has consistently increased my traffic. - Louis Gray
yes I Agree with Louis, as a causal blogger, my second highest traffic comes from FF ..google organic is still the 1st.. and as I have moved away from posting on twitter, that as a source is a slacker for me. But FF is gaining traffic to my blog. So actual use of FF imho increase traffic , does not decrease it ! - Peter Dawson
I have all kinds of blogs, and I hardly ever get to any of them any more, microblogging has so captivated my forebrain's attendant fingers. Were I paid, or precious, I might rouse from this leisurely crouch to spare the poor babies them from their venture into negative numberland, but we have often felt that downward mobility was more dignified, and so the shouting began, and away went the numbers, and no one is the worse for it. - david beckwith
And yet FriendFeed is still called an aggregator. - Bwana
i still get an amazing amount of traffic from FF. 1. Google, 2. Stumbleupon 3.FriendFeed - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
FF drives traffic to my Flickr account. - Russellreno
Is there another data point that is co-related to the dip - you as the blogger focused your energy on ff for quick conversation and didn't off as much blog posts as before? so you trained your visitors to engage w you on ff and also for blog visitors not following you on ff, your blog didn't offer as much content as before? ok, I am just speculating here, but interesting stats! - Sudha Jamthe
FF brings me more traffic than Google. No kidding! Stumbleupon beats it tho. - Yuvi (has IRL friends!)
I was just thinking today if it was worthwhile to still maintain my blog... I post so rarely now. - Clay Newton
You have to remember that we bioinformaticians read each others blog for information. Our "Life Scientists" room has become our water cooler. So the results aren't that surprising. Pawel's just making an empirical observation. The conclusions are interpretable in so many ways (for one, he's been busy, so hasn't been blogging that much, which definitely has an impact). - Deepak
@Clay I keep reading about people who might stop blogging in favor of FF and other services, but I have a feeling that the people who stop blogging altogether may regret it. Maybe you just need a break - not a complete stop? I have no facts to support this, just a gut feeling that people will start missing their blogs eventually. - Melissa Chang
room for both. blogging can be different. Potentially use blog for longer, more thoughtful posts. Stuff that isn't bite-size. Use FF for sharing brief thoughts and links to other great stuff. Thats my intention. Will see whan happens... - Kevin Doohan
I think for many people blogging was, as they say in computer science, a kludge. It was an incomplete solution to their information sharing problem. When FF came along it filled the gap a lot better and now they are wondering why they still blog. - Steve Spalding
I would agree with Kevin D. There seems to me to be a place for both. longer, more thoughtful posts and shorter 'updates' not requiring the full length of blog posts. I would be interesting if there was a related traffic increase on FF during the time of the initial dip... - Tim FitzGerald
But dont you think, its also how well you mesh together all your properties ? I mean, I use blogger and my post header gets spawned to Twitter and also to FF. This means I am reaching a broader audience other then my tradtional RSS subscription base. sticjing together ones propities is also critical to how you drive audience. Must my 2c .. - Peter Dawson
BTW, are there some good FriendFeed readers, beside the feed aggregation itself? And, I agree completely and love to check only one source instead of multiple ones ;-) - joergkurtwegner
