I think I need to take a screen cap of this. No Johnny W liking a TWiT post. Hmmm he must be busy today. lol
- Bill Heslin
Wow. IRC is so crazy. I think the story of the decade is surely mobile and email. The iPhone's popularity is huge for this. Google too.
- Elliot Christenson
Leo busy FF room today. Hey everyone!
- Bill Heslin
@Jeff cool, so no aggregators really?
- Caleb Elston
@Andrew Do you do much filtering on Digg? Just the tech areas for instance?
- Caleb Elston
Yeah the Tech page is set as my starting point.
- Andrew
@Caleb, No, I don't like aggregators. Even for blogs, things like Google Reader and Bloglines annoy me.
- Jeff Harbert
@Caleb - One exception to that is Popurls. That one's handy.
- Jeff Harbert
@Jeff Interesting. Is there something in particular about them you dislike?
- Caleb Elston
Yeah I barely look at Google Reader any more, it's just like a huge inbox you have to crawl through now.
- Andrew
@Caleb - Readers don't give me blog comments, for one. I also find that the look and feel of a website will help me remember where I first read something. Blog themes are also usually stripped out and made homogenous by readers. Don't care for that.
- Jeff Harbert
I've gotten nearly all my breaking news this year from Twitter.
- Jeff Harbert
I learned about Twitter on TWiT. TechTV and it's spawn are one important story of the decade.
- Jason R
Twitter definitely provides most of the news/links that I click on. I prefer the layout/design of Original Signal to Popurls, just a shame it seems to have been abandoned. Only annoyance is no way to turn off the popups when you hover on a link.
- Andrew
"we have some deep integrations coming with a bunch of different players and big announcements coming up" --Kevin Rose on TWiT
- Andrew Euell
anyone know if traffic on digg.com is still growing?
- Mark
I think the fire alarm is starting to beep more frequently...
- Andrew
Story of the decade is REALLY TWIT. I agree with Jason Robertshaw. I learned of Twitter on TWIT.
- Elliot Christenson
My last employer had a floppy-drive Mavica.
- Jeff Harbert
we had a mavica for a trip to vegas with the family. BACKUPS could be a story of the decade. Digital is now practical because of BACKUPS.
- Elliot Christenson
I know Carbonite is a sponsor but I gotta say their product for Mac really sucks. It doesn't backup video automatically! You have to manually select video files to backup. I switched to Backblaze. We should try to get them as a TWiT Sponsor!
- Ken Wiesner
Am I the only one that thinks location services like Foursquare are dumb?
- Jeff Harbert
@Jeff hate to disagree, but I think location is actually a core element to be shared. Just like Photos, Video, Text...location is next.
- Caleb Elston
@Caleb - but it's so transitory. So I check in at a bar - I won't be there an hour later.
- Jeff Harbert
People recommend you for the "Crunk" badge. :)
- Ken Wiesner
@Jeff that's true, but tweets are similarly ephemeral, but we now have much better realtime alerting systems so you can actually know about that right away.
- Caleb Elston
@Caleb - And it also does me no good to know where anyone non-local to me is. Scoble is having dinner at the Ritz - I'm across the country, so what use is that to me?
- Jeff Harbert
@Jeff, bingo - and if you're in a small town, who cares that you just popped down to the gas station in your pyjamas?
- Andrew
@Jeff that might be true for Robert, since you don't really know him, but if it were your son or brother it might be interesting, a conversation starter for the next time you speak.
- Caleb Elston
@Andrew - Exactly, which is why I think these services are dumb.
- Jeff Harbert
@Caleb - I'm actually acquainted with Robert. It still does me no good to know he's having dinner at the Ritz because he's nowhere near me.
- Jeff Harbert
Pet peeve - that's navigation, not GPS.
- Jeff Harbert
A TWiT conversation is going to hit best of day. It's been awhile. Love it...
- Bill Heslin
Automatic parallel parking is a joke. If you can't drive, don't drive.
- Jeff Harbert
I love that electric vehicle thing! That would be so cool! And I cannot wait to become popular P:
- Zachary TG
Fully automated cars would be cool though. Real life savers, since most people don't know how to drive safely.
- Jeff Harbert
Robert's is right Microsoft is just not cool anymore
- Kim Landwehr
I'd still like to have a full computer in my car.
- Jeff Harbert
Doesn't the decade begin in January 1st, 2011?
- Héctor
Dave Winer and RSS , Scoble names his child after RSS ...I may have to unblock you Robert...lol
- Bill Heslin
@Héctor - Leo mentioned that in yesterday's TWiG. He said he'd rather get a little email from correct listeners like you than wait a year and get 10x more from people who think it begins 1-1-10.
- Jeff Harbert
Correct. I remember arguing about it 10 years ago, but this time around I don't feel like nitpicking for that same exact reason. Sounds like a good plan.
- Héctor
I don't like the iPhone. I need a real keyboard.
- Jeff Harbert
Thinking of getting a Droid to replace my Blackberry in Sept when my current cell contract is up for renewal.
- Jeff Harbert
Yeah I'm going to drop my BlackBerry Storm - was such a disappointment.
- Andrew
Hey Johnny...Was wondering where you were...Enjoy your day!
- Bill Heslin
Please stop thinking that electric cars will 100% replace normal cars.
- Jeff Harbert
And btw, good old lead-acid batteries are just fine for electric cars. We don't need a battery breakthrough.
- Jeff Harbert
Thank goodness for holidays - this is the first time I've been able to watch TWiT live, as it's after midday Monday in NZ. Although luckily TWiG falls on Sunday here. :)
- Andrew
If you think about it most people spend most of their time driving to and from work and around town, a perfect use for electric vehicles
- Kim Landwehr
"earthy crunchy" --Leo Laporte on Kevin Rose
- Andrew Euell
@Kim - Exactly. We don't need 350 mile range. 80 is more than enough for most people.
- Jeff Harbert
you DO WANT Rackspace as a sponsor, trust me
- Mark
"tough ass particle" --Leo Laporte on the Higgs Boson
- Andrew Euell
great - I could understand all of the previous video vignette's except the bio-tech one ;)
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
....and an overpolluted planet with 15 billion people. Something to look forward to.
- Jeff Harbert
aging a disease? Cure that, that would b awesome
- Bill Heslin
what about a cure for sleep, free of side effects of course
- Andrew Euell
@Andrew - or just make sleep more effective. I'd love to get by on 3-4 hours per night.
- Jeff Harbert
Biggest story of the decade - social media. It changed the societal consciousness.
- echostreamer
it's not Facebook per se, but rather the ability of any company to connect that many people on the internet: Orkut, Twitter, Google Groups, etc
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
We sat around the laptop with my nephews and daughter and watched him take off on NORAD
- Johnny Worthington
At last, some decent media to watch. Thanks to the time difference to the UK, Twit has taken over my evenings tv schedule and im looking forward to the day when i can get the twit network direct to my tv. No more Eastenders for me. :P
- Dansus
On the Blackberry, that Bing thing is not strictly true. I have Google.com set as my home page and I search from there. I'm not redirected to Bing.
- Jeff Harbert
Love the live feeds. Look forward to seeing video podcasts of your shows.
- Michael Kelly
My Blackberry won't do Friendsfeed. It sucks. I had to borrow this laptop because I cant watch twit.tv and I cant findany irc app for my BlackBerry Storm. I am just screwed with my BlackBerry when it comes to Twit.Tv. Dang it. I miss Twit.Tv when I am on the road.
- Willy Monroe
Yep, wish I'd never bought a BlackBerry - you're so limited in what you can do and access. The App World finally launched in NZ (free apps only) and it's very sparse. Ditching it as soon as I can, probably for an iPhone as we don't have any decent Android devices here yet. :(
- Andrew
this Google show is getting boring and repetitive
- Fnord
You joined Friendfeed just to tell me this? Ha!
- Leo Laporte
LOL TWiG gets better each and every week.
- Roberto Bonini

Hello from Pasadena, CA, is Andy in town?
- George Mag
I won my Fantasy Football League and I am considering buying a Motorola Droid today. I have an iPhone 3GS but I think the Verizon network is faster than AT&T on 3G.
- George Mag
will it be a good thing or a bad thing that apple wont be at macworld?
- Aaron
Macworld was always a fringe event, Apple is mainstream now and CES is a a mainstream event.
- George Mag
Funny how they throw out the Red Carpet for TWiT now we are the biggest name at the conference ;)
- Mark
I don't think MacWorld ever had a live feed except for Apple's Keynote, they made too exclusive.
- George Mag
yeah but 99.9% of apps will not make the big money
- Mark
why is this news that a small number of the millions of developers are making big money? its the same for all markets
- Mark
The Killer App for Android has yet to reveal itself.
- George Mag
Tap Tap Revenge also has in-game downloadable content that you pay for. I should know. :(
- Seth
some PC indie developers make millions, some make pennies
- Mark
What true for stocks is true for Apps, Pennies add up, its total transactions that count.
- George Mag
I'm ready for the "death" of traditional TV. If a show isn't interactive in some way (ala TWiT) or topical (news, sports), there's no reason to stream it "live". All the standard dramas and sitcoms will go on-demand, per show, with "release dates".
- Ken Sheppardson
And it looks like I totally missed the point. Again :-)
- Parody
I'm not talking about some alternative to video, I'm just talking about the way the video is delivered.
- Ken Sheppardson
Maybe every 15 minutes you could just say "For those of you who tuned in for the [15|30|60|...] minute version of MBW, thank you for joining us and see you next week"... then just keep going.
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken, the only reason I don't like th Audible ads is since I joined, Andy has cost me a lot of money... Plus I am shopping for a new car in March... I have been looking at a Ford... GAH, GET OUT OF MY HEAD
- Johnny Worthington
lol johnny.... you're "one of us... one of us... one of us"
- Chris Heath
George Mag, have you used the TurnByTurn navigation on android 2.0? voice activated (like ford sync) with street view pictures (with hi-lighted arrows on the road where you need to turn) ... it's pretty killer... the phone itself costs as much as a tom-tom or garmin and you get way way more than those devices offer (for only a small monthly service charge)
- Chris Heath
good show do u think we NEAD A APP SHOW
- daveccorey
Did Leo find somebody to take his Mustang to CES? If not, I nominate Paul.

YouTube gets its own short URLs http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... In a blog post announcing the new feature, YouTube writes that the short URL will be used exclusively for YouTube videos (which means it isn’t as useful to spammers for misdirection). The post also notes that because all youtu.be shortlinks include the YouTube video ID, developers can use that...

SEE! It's the phone. He needs to check his splitter
- Johnny Worthington
It takes about 2 minutes. You still retain a 'basic' connection but anything with a lot of data doesn't work. From what I know, the filter/splitter splits the phone line into voice and DSL. If the voice interferes to much, the DSL line part gets noise
- Johnny Worthington
It's a hard thing to fight, not only can't you speak out against the kids accessing porn but the second you introduce the 'Government is evil/Big Brother' argument, you tend to get cast aside as a 'Paranoid X-File Basement Dweller'. I have been called that before :)

How about privacy issues of using Google's DNS servers?
- Gideon Guillen
It's good right now that Google doesn't redirect you to Google search if you enter a wrong or mistype a domain. It breaks some protocols, like anti-spam measures.
- Gideon Guillen
Ah. Interesting. Could hardly see it. One seriously cool mic.
- Roberto Bonini
Missed the live broadcast today so I have to wait until Leo releases the podcast, but is this going to be another Google love fest? Don't get me wrong, I love TWIG, but TWIG is wearing thin with me. Leo does a much better job with Windows Weekly and Mac Break Weekly. More balanced. For example, Paul Thourott loves Microsoft but at least he's honest about MS's shortcomings and isn't afraid of saying so.
- Brian Denicola
Brian, they scolded google for closing etherpad abruptly (maybe it was the etherpad people that did that, but still) - however i just heard that etherpad was restored and is to be opensourced so good on google then after stumbling horribly http://friendfeed.com/jeffjar...
- Chris Heath
If Google can develop such great technologies like face recognition, why can't they make use of their basic products more user friendly. I created a mailing list of about 60 names to send out an announcement. I kept getting a message that one or more of them were "malformed". Isn't Google smart enough to tell me which one? No. I spent almost an hour finding one address that had an extra space hidden in it. That is the most recent example.

Is Root Wireless the "independent" company that has AT&T as a client... but not Verizon? ... no, that's Global Wireless Solutions... another one of these third party testing services.
- Ken Sheppardson
Here in Oz, on Telstra Business.. Data is $10 for 150MB and $29 for 300MB (yes it's more expensive for more data)
- Johnny Worthington
Quality of 3G bandwidth/service is truly a regional issue. It is fantastic here in Columbus, OH. It is frustrating how relatively little 3G coverage there is on major highways, though. It seems concentrated to urban areas, obviously.
- Jim Metzendorf
Phones don't kill network bandwidth, people kill network bandwidth
- Ken Sheppardson
I'm happy with my cheap Sprint phone + iPod Touch. :]
- sunkenplanet
Now that Google is selling the Nexus direct... will Apple sell the next version the same way?
- Johnny Worthington
The biggest problem with that model (Google selling direct) is what happens if it breaks. The Genius Bar is a big thing
- Johnny Worthington
It's not hard to see already how Android and iPhone will become the analog to Windows vs. Mac OS X. Android is all about choice, but will be significantly splintered due to overwhelming hardware choice and variations in OS version and customization.
- Jim Metzendorf
For Android to succeed as a competitor to the overall iPhone user experience, Google does need to assert reference hardware and software designs.
- Jim Metzendorf
I thought TWIF was a shoe in though, NSFW will be up for 1 next year, great new show that really connects with the gamer community and culture.Good idea to not do a show of game reviews, but instead to simply put up a camera and let gamers do what the do. Leo, I have a question about Ford Sync and multiple phones. Can you only pair 1 phone at a time? If you can pair 2, what happens when 1 rings?
- Johnny Worthington
"The Sync also has support for multiple phones, up to twelve per unit to be exact. If more than one phone is present at one time in the car, the Sync will attempt connection with the accounts primary phone and then will switch to another linked phone as needed." -- http://www.bluetomorrow.com/bluetoo...
- Ken Sheppardson
Although I'm not sure what "as needed" means... whether that means when a new call comes in, or when the primary phone isn't present and it needs an outbound connection...

I really think a tablet is not coming from Apple in 2010.

http://mediafly.com/Browse... you should be able to download from there but it looks like they've only got the audio versions right now. they will eventually get the video versions (over the next week?) so you could subscribe there... or as leo said subscribe/download from the twit.tv website when the video goes live there (which will be soon also)
- Chris Heath
Super cool, how long does it take before the video is up on mediafly? Anyway that a version could be released within minutes after the live show?
- Charbax
doubt it charbax, they do some post editing to cut in the intros and the cold opens etc
- Chris Heath
It'd be cool also if mediafly could somehow let people stream on-demand not only in real-time but as a DVR, so people can watch it from the start if they tune in a half hour late
- Charbax
yeah that would be cool... they will have the live stream at least... that leo has said is in the works
- Chris Heath
Wish I had a better method to get TWiT videos on my TivoHD! Leo, you worked something out with Roku - talk to TiVo, please!
- David Gallo
It was a great show Leo. Cashmore is a keeper.
- Thom Kennon
I really don't understand what do people asking "should Google own the scans?" mean -- they want Google's data to be nationalized, or do they advocate preventing Google from acquiring the data in the first place? It's the same with people who are bitching that Google's book scans are too low quality. Google probably calculated the cost and profit of the whole exercise and are doing it in such way as to make the project possible at all. If you think the world needs better quality scans, go ahead and do it.

hey colean good show grom a dreary rainy day in georgia

Adi, there isn't an official wave, there are waves though... search for twig with:public there are a bunch of waves available to surf on with the twig tag (and the with:public attribute)
- Chris Heath
Jim, the deal was with MediaFly, and they have a deal with Roku. Making the deal with MediaFly is good for TWiT since MediaFly then goes and makes the deals with roku, and makes the apps for the blackberry, android, etc, and makes deals with xbox and ps3 etc... and leo only needs to deal with the mediafly people... anyways, just and fyi
- Chris Heath
Michal, i'm of the opinion that this endeavor should be undertaken by the library of congress or some other organization (with companies like google helping out) ... google asserting copyright on derivative (the scan) of a public domain work is just laughable and doesn't make any sense at all
- Chris Heath
Just finished listening to TWIG. IMHO: Leo please give us more objectivity. This is like a bible class - no questioning of whether God exists but just a mild debate of the literal nature of the message. Example: you gave Apple a harder time for snow leopard update than you did Chrome and all of the obvious issues it creates. No debate about the failing just mild justification for how...

Balance isn't always what's needed, IMHO you get farther sometimes by pushing in one direction and not being pulled in the opposite - TWiG is more technical and doesn't really seek to opine on the news (like TWiT) but explain it
- Chris Heath
I finally joined Audible off the back of their Thanksgiving promotion. Then the first book I bought was "The Cat In The Hat and Other Seuss Stories" for my daughter (and me) ... then I bought 3 other books...

Live now: The Tech Guy radio show 618 with Leo Laporte. At 3p Pacific, TWiT with Jerry Pournelle, Paul Thurrott, and Dwight Silverman. http://live.twit.tv. Discuss here...
Leo, good news. Your answer to my radio call-in question last week (about my computer crashing) was dead-on. It was a logic board problem! And it didn't cost that much to replace. Thanks for the advice!
- Eric Geller
I'm so happy, I don't even mind that my name was misspelled in the show notes for that day! :P

GOOD SHOWhi from ga rainy day in georgia

Eran, the purchase of gizmo doesn't really have any solid news behind it.... it's all speculation though i suspect that dvoark will want to talk about it on twit today since he wrote a pcmag column about it
- Chris Heath
What happens to the pc market when someone sells a sub $300 chrome os that yout just plug the box in to a tv.
- Michael Mooney
from Android
Yeah, your TV is your web browser, but what about the resolution?
- Nathan Snyder
Anyone seen this? http://bit.ly/6BmZxV - "The Googlephone: Google gears up for attack on mobile-phone market"
- Ave
yes this news was covered - the milestone was talked about on twig and twit two weeks ago (i think) when wil harris was on twit. - that first one about the google phone is a developing story that is constantly being covered on this show
- Chris Heath
and that times online story doesn't source many of it's claims (like when it will be available. they just cite experts saying that they think it will be available early next year) the data plan only voip phone by google aka the googlephone is currently not a product that google admits to working on. google is going for a very iphone like pr plan with leaks but not too many to hype the...

I think having the options open by default is a great idea. Non technofiles could definitely benefit from that. I though so since I first saw Bing.

Google wave conversation is just in time. Just got an invite to wave yesterday and I love it!!!!

Apple wants to own all your screens.

Another potential story: Apple probably about to deny Apple Care for Smokers, at least for machines that smell like Nikotin. Source: macnews.de (German Apple News Site)

Adobe and Apple need to make up. Nobody wins the way it is now.
- Andrew Smith
Right. If that's a feature you care about, to the extent that it influences your decision, you want an iPhone and AT&T
- Ken Sheppardson
Unfortunately it's sort of moot if you can't actually use the phone 'cause of lack of coverage...
- Ken Sheppardson
iPhone does phone and data at the same time on Roger's in Canada
- Andrew Smith
If you're using data, I believe your calls just go to voicemail.
- Ken Sheppardson
Chat room is correcting me... they say it rings and if you pick up it cuts off the call.
- Ken Sheppardson
But if you can't get data service coverage .. that feature doesn't exist in your world anyway
- Peter Costello
I think it might be a matter of whether there's an actual connetion established, i.e. streaming video vs HTTP. In between HTTP requests, your phone would certainly ring
- Ken Sheppardson
Just checked. While streaming a YouTube video on my Pre, it'll ring. It suspends playback, and I see the call window pop up on half the screen. It even tries to roll over the connection to WiFi and keep streaming, but the playback pauses when the phon rings.
- Ken Sheppardson
Meanwhile, Gameloft said "the company has cut back on investment [on Android platform] mostly due to weaknesses of Android's application store." http://www.reuters.com/article...

Isn't that a named protocol? Seems like my Bluetooth headset does that. Or am I wrong?
- Peter Costello
I'd propose that there were, in fact 100K Windows/Linux/OSX apps in the first 18mo, they just didn't all have to get registered in some central database.
- Ken Sheppardson
Somebody on FLOSS Weekly made the same point about some app the other day, i.e. the reason they only support Linux is to limit tech support burden. What app was that...
- Ken Sheppardson
... I think it was Ardour, the digital audio workstation software.

Handbrake was update in 2008 not 2009. so that "update" is a year old -- opps. seems like I was getting an old page for some reason. i refreshed an now the new update shows up

Handbrake 0.9.3 was in '08. 0.9.4 = Monday, Nov 23, 2009

They have had this on some 'Mobile Clubs' already. You 'Subscribe' for ringtones, wallpapers or games and you get hit $10 a month.

Keep them Leo. I like feeling like I am contributing directly rather than just through your sponsors

ChromeOS sounds like it's for my mum (and me). The root is read only, all the info is in the cloud. No viruses and no tech support from me.

TV's over 58 inches are exempt from the energy rule because their lobbyists went to war and that's only 3% of the marketshare.
- shelter watch
Energy Star can be gamed. The manufactures set the brightness to the lowest setting to pass and then you ramp it up when you get home.

In CA, smog checks are only required on vehicles older than six years old, I believe.

Virctor, johnny and charles are correct... leo probably only has certain lists show up in the desktop notifier (like this twit-conversations)

I am just listening to the audio stream and this sounds all sorts of wrong

Okay this is a little late but... for a 50" Samsung PN50B650 plasma, the power-on wattage is 252 Watts and the stand-by wattage is 0.18 Watts. So assuming 4 hour of viewing per day, ((4 x 252) + (20 x 0.18))/1000 = 1.01 Kwh per day, or 369 Kwh per year. So at 12 cents per Kwh, the cost to run the plasma for a year is only $44! If LCD saves you 30% then you're saving about $13 per year by buying an LCD. :P
