I have heartbreaking news. I've been asked to relay that the amazing person we know here as carlotta fancypants aka extra super cutie passed away in her sleep in the early morning of Friday, July 23, 2010. I do not have many details to pass along. I can say she was not physically well for some time. I do know this world lost something and grew a...
Sad, sad news. One of the bright stars of my friendfeed experience, as I'm sure she was to all who knew her in real life. I hope that final dream was peaceful. Rest in peace, carlotta super cutie.

I am so sorry…. My most heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. We were the most casual of acquaintances, but I always knew she'd make for a best friend. She was a lovely person and will be sorely missed. Farewell, Carlotta.
- Moody (Sweet FA 4 Life)
I was just looking at her flickr pics. She looks like she was a lovely person. I'm sad I didn't get to know her other than a few threads I remember seeing her reply to. RIP :(

Works for me, no problems removing and re-adding my Twitter account.
- netik
tinagillmor tries to add her twitter feed, gets an error. Says "could not find the given account."
- Steve Gillmor
from IM
bit quick to conclude that twitter has broken with FF don't you think?
- Christopher Harris
I can delete and re-add my account, but it hasn't updated my tweets since this this morning, not even after I try to push them. Something is going on with my twitter at least.
- Michelle M
no christopher if it's FriendFeed's problem I'll be talking on NGL in 30 minutes
- Steve Gillmor
Happened to me as well, once I clicked the checkbox below the name and put in the password it worked for me.
- J Allen
I just put in my password like JTio said and it worked. How strange.
- Michelle M
Jtio what checkbox, the one for Protected?
- Steve Gillmor
yes I noted this problem yesterday and today - FF said it could not locate new twitter feeds I wanted to add.
- Vernonkell
Don't blame Twitter; I just checked our feeds and are definitely sending tweets to Friendfeed, and they are receiving them.
- netik
People are also having difficulty following people. I've seen many messages over the past couple of days with that complaint.
- Karoli
Something not working with Twitter? That's truly surprising considering they are the most reliable service on the net.
- Bjorn Stromberg
i log into twitter and start following a user - cool. i go to FF and try to set up an imaginary friend (enter name, select twitter service, enter twitter name click "import twitter" and BAM: "We could not find the given account" whoever is causing this, it sux and needs to stop.
- MikeAmundsen
interesting. I saw that a bunch of tweets seemed to come into FF 30 minutes late yesterday. I wonder if this is part of a strategy on Twitter's part to disrupt Twitter service within FF in order to undermine the competition without coming out and taking the heat for publicly pulling the API from them. I hope not.
- Thomas Hawk
Figures the day I finally give in to starting a FF page and I can't wire up my Twitter account.
- Tina Chase Gillmor
We're running into some rate limiting issues, but I'm working with Twitter to get them fixed. I just put out a work-around for now, so you should be able to add your Twitter account now. Sorry for the difficulty.
- Paul Buchheit
Same issue for me. It says "We could not find the given account" when I want to add the Twitter account...
- HDG Ticaret
i am able to add one of my twitter accounts with password, but not another. the second one i still get an error account not found. this sucks.

Thanks to this thread, I took out my Canon Powershot S1 manual (three years old) and figured out how to 1) Take pictures in sepia, 2) Successfuly work the delay time to take a photo of myself and 3) Use the successive photo feature. I used the last on my cat, but I couldn't get him to move, so not worthwhile to see. I look forward to trying a few different things a month and seeing what happens. Thanks for starting this thread!

Many of you all knew Extra Super Cutie, aka Carlotta Fancypants. She was active on Flickr, Zooomr and Friendfeed. I blogged a post about her passing yesterday and many people on Friendfeed and Flickr have expressed condolences on her stream. Her husband flickrmailed me today and asked if I'd inform the FriendFeed community of her passing.
They kept their internet socializing separate and Carlotta had a private stream here on FriendFeed so many of you would not know him nor he have an easy way to let everyone know. Carlotta was an early contact of mine on Flickr and I was so impressed with her work and her gift with photography. She loved the FriendFeed Community here and ended up being very active. She will be missed.

"Today we bring you a great collection of portraits of the most iconic people throughout history. Portraits explore the relationship between the subject and the photographer or artist and usually continue to impress the viewer years after they have been created. The common thread running through all of these portraits is superlative design. Each is a masterpiece in its own right, from the medieval painted portraits right up to the most current photographs. This collection is arranged in alphabetical order and is by no means complete. We encourage you to post comments as to which portraits we’ve missed, that you feel should be part of this collection."

why does flickr keep telling me to use the help forum in their automated emails to me when I am banned from the help forum. How can I use it if I'm banned from it?

maybe they should change the message to suggest that people who are not banned from the Help Forum consider using it? It reads funny when you're banned.

So Which is More Offensive A Painting From The Art Institute of Chicago or Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz Telling Mike Arrington to “Fuck Off” At a Public Tech Conference in New York City? - http://thomashawk.com/2010...

- Thomas Hawk
One I would let my kids see. One I wouldn't.
- Jesse Stay
you know, it is funny, I'd have no problem taking my kids to the Art Institute of Chicago and walking through galleries with paintings like this one. On the other hand, I seem to always pause whatever I'm watching on TV if they come into the room and I think that they might use the word fcuk.
- Thomas Hawk
Funny how Yahoo seems to feel the need to protect the kids from paintings in museums but their CEO can publicly represent the company in a way that would be far more offensive for most parents.
- Thomas Hawk
Jason, context indeed is key. I suppose that Bartz's comments were far, far, more public than my little photo would ever be. To me that only lends credence to the point that my content is likely to be in aggregate far, far, less offensive than her content. Hypocritical indeed if you ask me. I had a friend who had his account deleted without warning for swearing at a flickr staffer in a...

I suppose I could Stephen, but if they felt that I'd purposely went around their block, I'd worry that their reaction might simply be to nuke my account. They've made it pretty clear that I'm not allowed in the help forum. Apparently they don't like dissenting opinion there about some of their policies and procedures.
- Thomas Hawk
I support your original post, Thomas, but I don't find it all surprising or objectionable for candidates to remove negative comments from the fan pages. They basically want to present only positive information to prospective voters. I don't think any candidates would engage in debate over controversy in social media.
- Stephen Mack
Stephen, but she won't even address the accusations privately or in any fashion whatsoever. She is clearly breaking the law and won't have a conversation about that. I think a lot of people probably think oh, it's no big deal, it's only a judge position after all, but I think that if we can get her to acknowledge that she broke the law, it might be helpful in persuading other candidates...

Thomas, I'm definitely sympathetic to your argument, and I agree it's worthwhile to make noise, but to me the focus should be on the robocalls themselves, not whether or not there's debate on Facebook. As Davis says, it's her page, and it's not ever going to have anything negative appear there.

not to mention that the other consoles offer it for free too.

That $50 (if you're foolish to actually pay that much) isn't just for Netflix. There's a lot of other stuff on XBL you get with it.
- Anika
Anika: I got XBL when it first came out and that's what they charged then. Since my account auto-renews, I'm kinda stuck
- LANjackal
Thomas: WAKE UP. Google TV is far from the only device for which access to Netflix streaming doesn't cost any more than a Netflix account. OTOH, it's widely agreed that XBL provides the best living room streaming experience of them all
- LANjackal
yeah, but I don't want XBL. I just want Netflix watch now. I'd rather not buy another box but it looks like I'll have to. I could buy a roku, but it sounds like Google TV will include Netflix and might have some other interesting possibilities as well.
- Thomas Hawk
Do you have a Wii? You can watch Netflix via that without paying. We won a Sony Blu-Ray player that also has Netflix on it, but it looks like crap compared to just hooking a computer to your TV.
- Anika
You're the only person out of every comment I've read on the internet that had better PQ from the computer. Now that they've enabled HD streaming to the PC with silverlight 3, maybe. but it's impossible it was better before, there was/is something really wrong with your setup
- Richard Lawler
Thomas: your argument is inconsistent. If you'd "rather not buy another box", then why are you complaining about XBL in your OP? A 360 is another box, which is exactly what you said you don't want.
- LANjackal
I've got a wii, but I'm not crazy about the fact that I have to have a disc in it to watch Netflix Watch now. I haven't actually tried that yet though even though I've already received my disc from Netflix. Might work on that this weekend.
- Thomas Hawk
LANjackal. I bought the XBox 360 before Netflix was even available on it. I bought it to use it as a Media Center extender which it does very poorly in my opinion. It's been an extremely buggy platform that I've suffered through for many years now much to the derision of my wife. I'd prefer not to buy *another* box from here on forward. But I'd also prefer not to pay MSFT $50 a year to...

Thomas, definitely check out the Netflix experience on Wii. it might seem cumbersome to use a disc, but I find that it's the same as putting in a DVD.

Photo Licensing Question: You shoot a charity event for the local chapter for an organization. You are happy to allow them to use your photos as they wish. All of the sudden the national office is interested in using the images. What do you do?
Allow it free of charge? License the images? Other? PS. there is currently no contract in place (that will be changing for future events)
- Justin Korn
I'm no expert, but if it happened to me, I would let them use your photos for free, but tag them with Creative Commons license, as a "give credit where it's due."
- imabonehead

- Justin Korn
Perhaps charge them but for a small fee?
- imabonehead
That's what I'm thinking right now. Thanks for your input.
- Justin Korn
from IM
I always allow one time/one purpose use, and tell them if they want to use it again, for another purpose, to contact me... so I can decide terms again... whether I do it for free has to do with who the organization is, and whether I feel like donating...
- Paula W
Thanks for the input Paula. Do you work with charities often? Would you be willing to share the contract you use with such organizations?
- Justin Korn
how do you feel about the charity. A good cause? If so I'd probably let them use them for free. That's just me though.
- Thomas Hawk
I don't usually use a formal contract with volunteer/non-profit orgs... I basically write in an email what specific usage I am granting, what credit I expect, and what I expect of them if they want to use the pics for another purpose (ask me again). I do make sure that whichever organization it is, that it is one I would feel comfortable supporting... usually this is the case...

Thanks for the follow-up Paula. Much appreciated!

Saying a company that puts corn syrup in their products doesn't care about their consumers is strange, because there's really nothing wrong with corn syrup. People opposed to the corn subsidy created a bunch of FUD around it (only referring to it by the acronym to make it sound more scary) but there's far worse stuff to be worried about than a company who uses corn syrup that contains 5% more fructose than regular corn syrup. But not to derail the subject here....

nothing wrong with corn syrup? HFCS is directly linked to all kinds of health and nutritional problems.
- Joe The Sausage
Dell (in the last 10 years), AT&T (which is waaaay worse than Verizon. I thought Verizon wasn't too good until I treid the competition), Delta Airlines, De Beers, BP (Can you believe Exxon of Exxon Valdez is actually a super-safe company now?), PayPal (screws merchants), Chase (credit cards). I LIKE Verizon, BestBuy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Ryan Air, and Apple.
- Mitchell Tsai
The evidence isn't there on the corn syrup issue, Joe. Environmentalists used to be on a jihad against it (and corn in general) because Michael Pollan identified it as a major evil. Unfortunately, the facts indicated that it's not really any worse than any other kind of sugar. Don't mean to derail the thread, DM if you'd like to continue.
- Mr. Gunn
Gunn: there's certainly enough evidence for pause, and to make it unreasonable to blink innocently and ask why I think HFCS might be bad:http://www.google.com/search...
