September 1 at 4:58 pm - en.wikipedia.org - Link
"Spirited Away - literally Sen and Chihiro's Spiriting Away (千と千尋の神隠し, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi?) is a 2001 film by the Japanese anime studio Studio Ghibli, written and directed by famed animator Hayao Miyazaki. The film received many awards, including the second Oscar ever awarded for Best Animated Feature, the first anime film to win an Academy Award, and the only winner of that award to win among five nominees (in every other year there were three nominees). The film also won the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival (tied with Bloody Sunday)." - Steve Isaacs via Bookmarklet

I recently watched My Neighbor Totoro, which was also made by Miyazaki. Loved it. I'm planning to watch Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Kiki's Delivery Service soon. (also from Hayao Miyazaki) - Vincent X

Heather: You guys should watch Grave of the Fireflies. You will most probably both cry by the end of the movie. - Vincent X
@Vincent - we've seen it! Unfortunately neither of us cared for it much. :/ - Heather Cee
I'm so glad this guy got popular, his films deserve to be seen. Unfortunately, there is a generation of Americans raised on Disney that will never ever see animated films as cinema. They'll always be cartoons for them. Spirited Away was amazing though. - Pete D
Heather: In my case I loved it... I think I'll watch it again soon, it's been a while. - Vincent X
I'm Miyazaki's biggest fan. - Brandon McCall
I'm also a fan of Osamu Tezuka's work (of Astro Boy fame), love the themes in his stories. There was actually a Tezuka exhibit last summer in San Francisco, took a bunch of pics there, it was really nice: http://flickr.com/photos/vince... - Vincent X
An amazingly good and imaginative movie. @pete Disney was the US distributor of this movie and thus should be credited for bringing this movie to the US. While I work for Disney, I was even luckier to be introduced to this movie via my Japanese wife and her wonderful family. Truly a gem this movie is indeed. - Mike Reynolds
One of my favourites. I also loved Howl's Moving Castle. - Kevin Cearns
Incredible movie. And the music is wonderful. I bought the soundtrack and listen to it frequently. - Joey Gibson
Haven't seen this one yet, but it's one my list. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was excellent; hope this is just as good. - JA Castillo
Mike, I love the effort Disney put into distributing this film stateside, and Lasseter's contribution is worthy as well. It is going to take a new generation of moviegoers to see animation as anything other than kiddie fodder. - Pete D
Good points Pete. Nice to see so many people here with good taste. :) - Mike Reynolds
One of my favorite movies of all time. Of course, I pretty much like 90% of Miyazaki's output. Princess Mononoke, Totoro, Nausica, Howl ... all brilliant - Deepak

Spirited Away is one of the supreme achievements of human art anywhere, anytime. I was dragged to it by a friend who knows much more than I do about Japanese animation, anime, etc. (which is not hard). Totally transfixed from the first frame. The story is at once familiar and strange. The design is endlessly and unexpectedly inventive. It's light and deep at one and the same time. - Michael Markman
I had been a bit turned off by anime.... until I saw this. What a wonderful film. - Squirrel Girl

This joint = best. hip-hop. track. EVER - Mona N.
ever hear Live at the BBQ by Main Source? - Carlos Ayala
mona, i respectfully disagree. if you're talking all time, this has got to be an entry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.... even for pete rock, i'd have to go with Play Dis Only At Night - Eric Eldon
Carlos: That is too obscure, even for me LOL @Eric: Jay-Z = business man :) - Mona N.
ok ok ok...how about.......Whats the Scenerio???? Claaaaaaaaaaaasic! - Carlos Ayala
oh yeah, and Jay-Z doesnt even make it into the top 100. sorry. - Carlos Ayala
ATCQ = all sortsa WIN... and Carlos, that's stretching it. He is EASILY in the top 10, but definitely, not 5. - Mona N.
jay-z? really? lyrically, musically? or profitability? i'll give him the latter by a longshot, the others...way too much comp out there for him to be considered. - Carlos Ayala
Maybe top 20-25 - Corie
Overall package. That man's discography is insane! List your 10 - Mona N.
on a pop level? sure, no question. you want my ten, tracks? or lyricists? - Carlos Ayala
pop? NO WAY. Jay-z IS hip-hop. Just because he is a business man, it doesn't make him 'pop' - Mona N.
thats debateable, because even within the hip hop industry there are elements of pop. i call it urban pop. a current example....lil wayne. is he hip hop? hell no. - Carlos Ayala
Are you kidding me? Please don't tell me, you're like KRS.. 9 elements in hip-hop? NO, dude. Hip-hop is hip-hop. Regardless of if you're 'mainstream' or 'underground' - Mona N.
I'm sorry....Li'l Wayne isn't hip hop? that statement really does not compute for me... - सत्याग्रह {Bren}
want another example? kanye west? is he hip hop? hell no. but he was when he was a hungry producer. - Carlos Ayala
So you have to be 'hungry' to 'be hip-hop'? FAIL! Ye IS hip-hop, too... Wait, what's your definition of 'hip-hop'? - Mona N.
Hip Hop does not equal Rap. Rap does not equal Hip Hop. Proceed... - Rahsheen ™
in reality its 4 elements. and in many ways i am like krs. see the thing is that true hip hop music is not radio friendly. therefore not marketable. what we are discussing are marketable acts. an no sorry, lil wayne is not even a rapper. - Carlos Ayala
rahsheen, agreed. therefore my statements carry even more weight when you think of it this way. - Carlos Ayala
hip-hop = culture, a way of life. if you're a part of the game, you are hip-hop. - Mona N.
I just don't follow your argument regarding wayne...so, who is 'hip-hop' by your definition? - सत्याग्रह {Bren}
you are right mona. but the game has been skewed in such a way that it killed rap music. this happened in the 90's - Carlos Ayala
Lil Wayne does say some ill stuff sometimes when the syssurp is hittin him just right, but it's quite possible he is something besides a rapper - Rahsheen ™
So who 'killed it' then? Just curious. - Mona N.
the purple drank? ;-) - Corie
but we already established that hip hop does not equal rap...so what does the game being skewed have to do with hip hop? and I still dont know what constitutes hip hop for you, Carlos... - सत्याग्रह {Bren}
wayne is a fabrication that came out of the drug game. i get it. many have done this. but he is not a lyricist. think of guru, black thot, large prof., kool g rap, big daddy kane, most of the wu tang clan, nas, mf doom, and the like....then compare. see the difference? - Carlos Ayala
wayne is a fabrication? I'm going to have to just drop this portion of the thread, because I really don't follow your argument, sorry. - सत्याग्रह {Bren}
So in your opinion, Weezy is what killed the game? (and i'm not a weezy fan, btw) - Mona N.
The game was dead long before Weezy. Ain't I older than him? LOL - Rahsheen ™
Carlos, I must respectfully say...you're buggin' out. - Jason Toney
Mona - no, i just ended up singling him out. i think that where ever he came from is what killed the game. there are many issues here with the back end on the executive level. but you know the difference. look at he songs we are favoring on last, pandora and blip...its not lil wayne and the like. at least for me it isnt. - Carlos Ayala
I refer to the Mighty Mos Def - "People talk about hip hop like it's some giant living on the hilltop coming down to visit the townspeople. We are hip hop. Me. You. Everybody." - Jason Toney
Jason: !!!YES!!! thank you. - सत्याग्रह {Bren}
Regardless of whose fault it is, I love hip-hop (the entire culture and all of its elements), especially the music. Even if most artists produce hot beats & garbage lyrics, I still respect every single one of their hustles. To call them "not hip-hop", IMO is simply wrong :) - Mona N.
Mos is a very intelligent dude. he knows what he is talking about. and he is one of the few that embodies hip hop....and can still be hollywood. - Carlos Ayala
Mos is an actor, recently, more than an artist ;) Just saying. Who's on your top 10, Carlos? - Mona N.
@jason maybe i am. but you will have to clarify your point a bit better. - Carlos Ayala
mos studied acting. he is very well educated as well. he is both. he still dropping albums left and right. - Carlos Ayala
Fair enough :-) Hip hop, by its very nature, is fluid, changing, constantly in flux. Today, more than ever, hip hop defies definition. It is a global yet highly localized force for communities of all stripes and types. To define hip hop MCs by such a narrow definition destroys the entire point of hip hop. We can all agree that Rakim and Nas are lyricist's supreme but that doesn't make them more hip hop than Rich Boys, Soulja Boys, or Lil' Waynes of right now. - Jason Toney
so who's on your top 10 of all time? better yet, who's your G.O.A.T. - Mona N.
these different areas of rhyme don't compete with each other, they complement each other. Unless, of course, somebody starts a cipher. Then, we'll see how they get down head to head. And that, sir, will be hella hip hop. - Jason Toney
Nas <3 illmatic = best. album. of ALL time /end - Mona N.
+1 Mister JT/Jason Toney - Monique
a top ten is hard for me...but off the top of my head i'd go with, in no particular order: mf doom, nas, black thought, guru, mos def, large prof, biggie, ghostface, rakim - Carlos Ayala
missed one....lets tie it up and kool g rap, big daddy kane, and krs - Carlos Ayala
ahhh.. wutang's and outkast's first albums bring back memories - Rodfather
nice list :) but IMO, biggie (who i consider my top three, easily) was one of the main reason hip-hop went so 'commercial' per se.... just a thought - Mona N.
Jason, well stated. I am with you on this. The issue I have, and I realize that it is my issue is that I have a problem with the quality of the product. And to my ears its that quality that denies it its place in hip hop. To me, what is out there (commercially)...is really not hip hop. Sure it came out of hip hop culture but I cannot embrace it. Its just very difficult for me to articulate it. Ultimately, its subjective. - Carlos Ayala
Mona - you are absolutely right. Puff was one of the driving forces of the decline. - Carlos Ayala
Mona in the house. You know your stuff. I'm impressed. :) - Tsega Dinka
You guys are actually not disagreeing. You are all correct. Maybe it's all hip hop, but I agree with Carlos about not being able to fully embrace some of it. I'm not sure what it is, but it's there. - Rahsheen ™
Tsega D: You learn something new, everyday, huh? ;) Carlos: It's not the Diddster's fault. He can't dance, and has a HORRIBLE flow, but the man can SELL. (even if he's the Grim Reaper of the industry) Biggie, bridged the gap b/w hot beats with INSANE lyrics. Diddy just capitalized on it.. So the Weezys, Jeezys, and the beezies...? HA! that came after, are not entirely at fault :). But I still love the music. I mean come ON, can you really groove to saaay Nas? Talib? Doom? up in the club? - Mona N.
Carlos, I feel you on what's poppin' on the radio not being my particular cup of tea. My favorite hip hop releases this year are all mixtape joints from the likes of Wale, Rhymefest, and Kidz in the Hall. But that's the point -- we're at this point where there are hundreds of hip hop albums each year. Just 10 or 15 years ago, there were probably only 25 - 50 a year that mattered. Who cares if Weezy is at the top of the heap if the heap is a mile high? - Jason Toney
and just to give context of my listening habits - last.fm says my top hip hop artists of the last year are: Rhymefest, Wale, Madlib, Jay-Z, M.I.A., Talib Kweli, De La Soul, Kanye West, Common, J Dilla. - Jason Toney
Donuts =) - Mona N.
Well, while we at it. The G.O.A.T. is actually here: http://bit.ly/4yMPg9 - Rahsheen ™
Believe me I know, I freelanced for bad boy's marketing dept for almost 3 years; after biggie was gone. I know what he was capable of first hand. But honestly, the music I am arguing against does not move me, it actually brings me down. But I know what you are saying and I know that if we were in a club on the dance floor together...i assure you that i would not walk away if one of these wack tracks came on. i'd make it happen, no question. - Carlos Ayala
thanks for the discussion all, i wish this had taken place face to face...time to clock some ZZZZzzzz's. nite all. - Carlos Ayala
LOL @ Rah's shameless plug HAHA!! @Carlos, indeed, it was a good discussion. I haven't talked about music in a while, so it was nice =) I'm about to head to bed too. G'nite, y'all! - Mona N.
Whoa. So much discussion stemmed from this classic track. What about Pete Rock?! Guys who just rock it. I used to drop this track whenever I could in the club. One of THE classic old skool tracks that just has that 'vibe'. Still listen to a lot of hiphop, but it definitely ain't what it used to be. Ever since the Chronic where the game changed. And that's the beauty of hiphop. It evolves. Whenever they say it's dead, it changes form. - Mike Chang
@Mona, what kind of hustla would I be if I didn't "pass my cd" to obvious music lovers? LOL - Rahsheen ™
Hey -I respect your hustle, yo! ;) - Mona N.
mona remind me not to get into another deep discussion at 4am. That was tough on me. ;) but I got alot of adds as result. (I've since reciprocated) too bad more peeps did not participate, I would have had a crew behind me. J/k @mike pete rock is one of the staples of hip hop there is no question about it. "I won't stop rockin til I retire!" a record like troy was needed to spark this convo. - Carlos Ayala
in other news, lil Wayne is still crazy wack. But I wish I had his loot. - Carlos Ayala
