A few months back I wrote a blog post detailing my experience selling stock photography through both Getty Images’ Flickr Collection program as well as a new program allowing you to sell your photography through ClusterShot. The title of my post “Is 20% of something better than 88% of nothing” compared my own experience with the companies and my sales through the companies as of last May. Getty pays out about 20% for royalty free images while ClusterShot pays out 88%. Today I just received my sixth monthly statement from Getty Images and I thought it an appropriate time to revist my experience selling stock photography through both companies. At present I’ve got 68 images offered for sale through Getty. You can see my Getty images for sale here. For my first six months in the program I’ve earned $883.35 from the sale of 22 images. At present I’ve got 30,848 images offered for sale through ClusterShot. You can see my Clustershot images for sale here. So far I’ve earned $338.80 from the sale of 3 images.
- Thomas Hawk
This is excellent information. Thanks for posting. I've been trying to figure out which services to invest time/effort in for this. Peace TH.
- Rich Harris
I just can't get behind the Getty thing. They want all the rights to the images they choose, and require that you drop the CC license from images they choose. You cannot sell them yourself. That kills the deal for me.
- Jeremy Brooks
The fact that Getty refuses to recognize the Creative Commons license as valid is disappointing indeed Jeremy.
- Thomas Hawk
Also, from this clause in their agreement: "Getty Images has the exclusive right to sell your images and images substantially similar to those in a commercial context once you've accepted their invitation (and signed the Getty Images Contributor Agreement)." it would appear to be a violation to sell the same image on ClusterShot, or from any other site where it might still have a CC license.
- Jeremy Brooks
that's correct Jeremy. That's why I've removed images that I've got licensed through Getty from ClusterShot. Getty's exclusivity thing is a strike against them compared to Clustershot who requires no exclusivity.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas, thanks for sharing your experience. Only 3 sales through ClusterShot from a 30K+ pool seems like a dismal fail. Hardly worth the time and effort it took to set up the account. I agree that Getty's return is significantly better, but it would take an awful lot of photos on Getty and a lot of time and effort to make anything resembling a living from selling stock through them.
- Jeff P. Henderson
You can't compare these two. I wouldn't call Clustershot a stock agency. It's more of a webshop where you can put up your photos for sale. Getty is also much more established than Clustershot. When people contact me personally and want to buy a photo I refer to Clustershot, my webshop.
- Rutger Blom
from iPhone
So what about the copies of the photos that you have on other sites (Zooomr, your blog, whatever) that are essentially the same as the Getty shots? How do you handle that? You cannot retroactively change the CC license; so are the photos on Zooomr still available under the CC?
- Jeremy Brooks
well Getty is only 68 shots. But these same shots moved from CC to "all rights reserved" as part of the Flickr deal. Which is dumb, because you are right Jeremy, once CC, always CC. The same shots still exist on Zooomr as CC.
- Thomas Hawk
While Yahoo! professes to care about "you" in their new multi million dollar marketing campaign, in actuality Yahoo!'s Flickr destroys user data. From the ad: "Your sites, your mail, your friends, your whatever, yes totally." ...unless your site is on Yahoo's flickr and then they can nuke it whenever they feel like it. It's funny how they say it belongs to you until they destroy it. More information here: http://www.flickr.com/photos...
- Thomas Hawk
Add in the fact that Yahoo is pulling the plug on GeoCities, They totally care as much as Citibank.
- Ralph Berrett
"Valleywag picked up a FriendFeed discussion between a few of us yesterday regarding the bailout bill within which Scoble blames 'people like [me]' for the coming 'breadlines'. It rings a little hollow considering where I’ve been on all this and where he’s been (i.e. nowhere), but it brings a much more important issue to the fore..."
- Anthony Citrano
From the article: "So, all of you: call your legions to arms. Tell them a national emergency requires that they spend an hour a day seriously evaluating the American way of life, thinking critically about where we stand as a nation, how we got here, and how they might help in the rebuilding. This is not politics; this is hardcore societal bodywork."
- Ontario Emperor
I've been talking to people at Fast Company and Inc here in NYC today. There are two problems. 1. The very real credit crunch. The Congress can get us out of that one, maybe. 2. Our fear. We're now all hoarding and preparing for the worst. I know I'm not spending money on projects that I was planning on doing (like I need to fix a shower). That too will cause harm to our economy and is something we can do something about, but, tell me how to get me over my fears and my hoarding impulse?
- Robert Scoble
Thanks Anthony, very well said. Glad this came around again.
- jcunwired
@Robert: Glad to see you're on a more even keel today. Credit will tighten but not stop. Things will get worse before they get better. I'd have to refer you to a therapist for the fear issue. I have faith that we're strong enough to get through it. The Bay Area survived the web 1.0 dot com crash. It wasn't easy (I was out of work for 11 months and had to go back to my old career for half pay) but ... we make due, we soldier on, we rebuild. Corny, I know. [edit] And a dose of lolcats ;)
- AJ Kohn
AJ: oh, we'll get through it. We made it through the depression and the civil war (where we killed six million of each other). We'll make it through whatever comes next. I might have to bring my family over and sleep on your couch, though. Hope you won't mind. :-)
- Robert Scoble
That's a small part of the current problem, Robert, for sure. But my goal with this piece is to move beyond this singular symptom (the financial crisis) and address the root of the disease.
- Anthony Citrano
First Twitter, then the economy. Damn you, Robert. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
The root of the problem is that we are human.
- Alex Scoble
This is why I think we need to create a "couch for Scoble" room ;)
- Les Zaldor
@Robert: Sure, come by! Not that I have much in my apartment and the 12 year old IKEA couch isn't too comfy.
- AJ Kohn
@Anthony: Well written BTW. I feel like this is an opportunity to change the way Americans have been living - to stop living beyond our means and start living sensibly. And perhaps this creates an atmosphere where we speak up - loudly and boldly - when we see something going off the tracks instead of sitting back.
- AJ Kohn
@AJ - thank you. That is exactly what I am hoping for.
- Anthony Citrano
@Gregory I had a feeling you might like this post. :)
- Anthony Citrano
Robert, you get over your hoarding impulse by spending on things that lower your expenses over time. There is no shortage of those: Fresher produce (ie. locally grown), energy-efficient appliances, more durable clothing, etc. For your specific example (a shower), look into water-efficient shower heads.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Those are all optional expenses. Won't be happening anytime soon, sorry.
- Robert Scoble
Oil should start its well awaited decline towards $50 range
- imran
Keep dancing around it guys; but, do know that we're dancing at the edge of a cliff.
- Anthony Citrano
Anthony: I thought your ideas are good, but we're not ready for that yet. It's amazing to me that so many on Twitter and here (er, around the world) are just encouraging the total burning of our economy. So, I figure, we need to go through a year of burning. Burn, baby, burn. Hoard, baby, hoard. Then we can have a real conversation about what to do now and how to build a new economy on top of the ruins. In the meantime, hope your house doesn't get burned down in this mess that's coming.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah, I was talking to my mechanic yesterday ... he still feels that a bailout is for "someone else." I mean, yeah, we're *all* feeling the effects of high gas prices, but the effects of the "credit crisis" ... You'll forgive me if I say that "main street" hasn't felt that yet. So (to hack up yet another political quote) main street's quite ready to say "thanks, but no thanks" to that bailout for noone ... and let the markets spin for awhile.
- Joel Bennett
@Gregory: Consumer revolving debt will top 1 TRILLION by the end of the year. I simply don't think anyone truly understands the effect of offering so many so much credit.
- AJ Kohn
Nice to see people finally talking about the substance. I wrote an in depth piece today on the natural selection of a market recession. We can attenuate some of the acute pain, but we can stop the cycle of disruption. We ensured the intensity of the coming chaos by trying to forestall it. Now the deadwood has to burn. There is a silver lining. http://www.chriskenton.com
- Chris Kenton
from twhirl
Chris - thanks. I am not terribly optimistic that my rallying cry will do much - but here's hoping.
- Anthony Citrano
Robert, food and clothing aren't 'optional'. Spending more for fresher food makes you healthier and increases your productivity, and reduces your future medical expenses. Spending more on durable clothing saves money on buying replacements.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Catharsis has its own merits. :) People will listen when they're affected. Compared to the conversation I saw three weeks ago even after the initial crisis started, there's now a chorus. Keep up the cries.
- Chris Kenton
from twhirl
The initial crisis started well over 25 years ago, but I take your point. When and if they do listen, it may be too late.
- Anthony Citrano
Anthony - funny picture!! hilarious!! ha, ha!!
- Susan Beebe
The underlying issue isn't hilarious, though, is it? I wonder what percentage of FFers are bothering to actually read the piece... the silence is deafening.
- Anthony Citrano
Thanks Anthony, this is a strong call to arms to invest our time in campaigns, issues and nonprofits. Have any favorites that you personally choose to invest your time in?
- Jason Wehmhoener
I think a point that can be difficult to grasp is that there are other measures of a society's health beyond personal wealth. Finances are easy to express in nice simple integers, but the degree to which individual people will be able to weather the inevitable changes of our times has to do with a great many more dimensions than those determined by money alone.
- Jason Wehmhoener
I was raised by teen parents who were by definition poor. However, my mother is a librarian, and I was taught that knowledge is power. She was right. I'm doing very well financially now, in spite of having dropped out of college as a freshman for financial reasons.
- Jason Wehmhoener
@Robert - I missed your earlier suggestion that "we're not ready" to stand up and take personal responsibility for our future. That may be true, but if it is, it's heartbreaking - and we deserve what we get.
- Anthony Citrano
@John - it's decriminalized variously in a dozen states or so, but there's still federal law to contend with.
- Anthony Citrano
I am glad they dropped him. Pot may be no worse on a person than alcohol and cigarettes but it's still illegal.
- Becca
was only ever made illegal cos of cotton.... and that is irrelevant now.
- Rob Sellen :o)
@Becca - sorry, but I despise that uncritical way of thinking. It is why this good country has the serious problems that it does. Voting as a black person or a woman was illegal once, too - does that mean it was wrong? Is illegality the end of the conversation when it comes to what's right and what's wrong? How intellectually stultifying.
- Anthony Citrano
well, no more fruitloops for me I suppose. Not so bad because sugar cereal probably isn't the best thing for you. At least this leaves more room in the mornings for bacon though.
- Thomas Hawk
@Anthony I think your example just backs up my own point. I don't know that voting was illegal but certain people were definitely not allowed to do so. The laws changed and now more people have that right. Just because you don't agree with a law doesn't mean you have the right to break it. Work on changing the law instead of breaking it if that's what you think is right.
- Becca
sure I should be decriminalized, but the golden boy got kissed by the fate, many careers got flushed down the toilet for the same, money talks
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
@Chris I have no idea. I am so far removed from politics I wouldn't have a clue as to where to start. But, I do agree with legalization.
- Becca
my point exactly, he's very lucky to be able to keep his career barely untouched... unlike many others
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
@Becca - I sure am glad that people like Martin Luther King, Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, Harriet Tubman, Gandhi, and our Founding Fathers weren't taking your advice about not breaking "the law", in all its glorious and divine perfection.
- Anthony Citrano
To compare the civil rights movement to the legalization of marijuana is idiotic! People are missing the point about him losing this sponsorship, he by signing these contracts, which I am sure have clauses that dictate the kind of persona he is to portray, is in effect a brand name. Regardless if he wanted to be a role model or not, he is a brand name and should act accordingly in order to keep said sponorship. So I don't feel bad for him. He made his bed so sleep in it.
- jamar78
Really, Joel?? The drug war in this country is an assault on civil liberties that has destroyed millions of lives - most of them poor and black. Many of these laws are modern day "black codes." So, I don't think it's an idiotic comparison at all, nor do many of the civil rights leaders with whom I have talked about this very issue. (Do agree with your angle on the contract though - a deal is a deal, however stupid it may be.) Please see my article from today on this, which goes much further.
- Anthony Citrano
drug use however is a choice....I don't know anyone that chose their ethnicity or skin color
- jamar78
just seems sort of hypocritical that they'd stand by him when he was convicted of drunk driving which is in fact very dangerous and could kill somebody, but need to seem to make a point of dropping him for marijuana use at a party which is arguably far, far, less dangerous.
- Thomas Hawk
Maybe they warned him not to get in any more trouble. There might be more going on behind the scenes than we know. Likely that there is for legal reasons.
-
Maybe this is all economic -- Kellog's (and Subway it seems as well?) just need a way out of paying -- and have their excuse to terminate the contract?
- Brian Sullivan
I agree, Brian - so many threads on this that I'm losing track of what I said where, but I think it's about money and courage (or the lack thereof).
- Anthony Citrano
Didn't Kellogg drop the whole Olympic sponsorship and not just Phelps? Seems like a swim-goat to me.
- Nancy Babyak
well, wait, do they make capt. crunch? cuz I can't NOT have capt. crunch when i'm getting high. JK
- BEX
Make marijuana legal first. As long as that law is in place, I don't blame Kellogg's for being cautious.
- Morton Fox
Nancy, whatever the reason Kelloggs dropped him *how* they did it by mentioning the incident as the reason was a statement. They stood by him when he was arrested for a DUI but not when he took a bong hit something arguably far less harmful to himself and society. They could have dropped him quietly or said they were dropping all Olympic sponsorship but they used their soapbox to make a statement about marijuana usage instead.
- Thomas Hawk
good for subway. Their $5 subs are a good deal in a bad economy. I don't buy my lunch much these days but if I need to I know where I'll go next.
- Thomas Hawk
Heh, did he only appear in their US commercials? I can't say I've ever seen him in the UK ones.
- Tyson Key
The federal laws are those that need to be rescinded. Many states' marijuana laws are already pretty liberal. The states should have a right to choose, the feds need to keep out of it.
- coldbrew
Breaking news, Phelps gets endorsement contract from Screaming Yellow Zonkers. "they'll stone you when you're trying to be so good, they'll stone you just like they said they would..."

- Billy Warhol
@Morton, in re: "laws in place," isn't DUI illegal? They didn't seem too "cautious" in that regard. @Chris: Kellogg's been getting hammered on this for a couple days now. I also heard last night that the company was now saying that the marijuana incident was merely coincident and had nothing to do with his non-renewal.. Could they be that silly? I haven't bothered to look.
- Anthony Citrano
interestingly, subway apparently yanked every reference to phelps from their website, even though they said they support him.
- Richard Lawler
Tonight Facebook has made a number of updates to the Facebook platform one of which is the opening of status updates. In order to get Facebook statuses, you no longer need to use a session ID to access statuses. This is a huge update and one that I think is going to take Facebook to the next level. There are additional updates listed in the Facebook blog post: Not everyone has 2k+ followers on FB to get a viral comment going the same as Twitter . FB = inner circle; Twitter = public party."
- Thomas Hawk
from Bookmarklet
so does this mean that more Facebook stuff will be filtering into FF?
- Thomas Hawk
It would be nice to be able to rely on Twitter as connective tissue for social media.
- Christian Anderson
This'll be an interesting change to the balance of power. If there is such a thing. Still, I'm hanging out on twitter, not FB (accounts on both of course though).
- Bryan Duke
Good question, Thomas. I wonder if it'll make notes importing functional with the default Facebook share type, without having to add them as a separate RSS feed.
- Tyson Key
It's up to FF if they're going to support FB's FQLs.
- Mona Nomura
Hmmm, time for a twitterific-style iPhone app for FB statuses?
- Bryan Duke
A facebook-centric blog says that a new facebook feature will kill a competitor? Ummm, no. No bias there...
- Owen Byrne
I don't see FB killing twitter, they serve two different purposes.Twitter is elegant in it's simplicity.
- Gary H
and Facebook is gonna kill Friendfeed too: "The real loser here is probably friendfeed, honestly. I like Nick, I do, but he is delusional LOL
- Mona Nomura
I doubt Facebook will kill FriendFeed, since FriendFeed is generally much more open in comparison (i.e. you don't need to approve friends, and the site feels much more "free-form"), not to mention that Facebook's aggregator only supports a limited number of sites natively, without using 3rd party applications.
- Tyson Key
Seriously, what is FQL? LOL And you better believe when bigger 3rd party services start using FB's messed up API they will NOT stay quiet about how messed up it is. They have the potential to be heard more than FB app devs - the only ones that actually utilized the API to begin with so FB better have their stuff together. Like I said on Twitter AND AllFacebook, FB is NOTORIOUS for being developer unfriendly. So LOL at the notion that FB will be a 'killer' anything.
- Mona Nomura
@Mona - Some proprietary bastardisation of SQL apparently, although there's an implementation in their "Facebook Open Platform" source code drop that they made eons ago, that I doubt they update, if I remember correctly.
- Tyson Key
As Facebook would call it, "an evolved subset" ;)
- Tyson Key
Ya along with their FBJS or whatever that is. Hilarious.
- Mona Nomura
@Thomas - Hah, great screenshot. Did you accept the "toy car request", "addicted to dexter invitation" and "winnie the pooh request" invitations? ;)
- Tyson Key
Well what stinks is that FB was all gung ho with 'normal people' monetizing on the apps we (users) hated so much. I mentioned in Leo's thread (man too many FB posts tonight) but FB screwed over the devs. Stats don't lie http://adonomics.com/about.... With a crappy track record like that, why would 3rd party developers want to support FB's initiatives? And TH LOL!! That is insane. I actually have a different group of people I interact with on FB. I kinda like it. ;)
- Mona Nomura
So when will twhirl allow setting status on Facebook messages?
- Colin Charles
from twhirl
FB overtake FriendFeed? I'd like to see FF gain more market share so at least FB is forced to re-do a few of their news feed features. I tried "importing" my blog thinking it would put links to my posts in my FB feed a la FriendFeed. Instead FB monitors your RSS feed, scraping the full text of your blog posts and creating FB notes, keeping the visitor inside their walled garden. Bush league.

- Christian (Simply X)
Something quite disturbing about seeing part of my own wedding ceremony as a tramp stamp.
- April Russo (app103)
I think it's fake. If it were real, there'd almost certainly be more photos taken by the proud, trashy owner of the tattoo. It'd be all over MySpace. This photo is all grainy & recycled looking. The letters are too perfect. Anika, if you come in here & see me fussing, sorry. I had to say something. Also, if this were real, this chick probably set some kind of world record for tramp stamp butt tatts, so there'd be more about her out there.

I have spent more than 2,000 hours in friendfeed. I have clicked "like" on 15,822 items. I have commented on 8,048 items. That is a HUGE investment in time (I've been blogging a lot less over the past year). These new search features bring HUGE benefits. I will discuss why here.
- Robert Scoble
1. Now you can search based on number of comments an item got. So, I can search for all items that contain the word "Obama," for instance, but I can tell it to only show me items with 10 likes or more. THIS IS HUGE because it shows which items got HUGE engagement. Here is that search: http://friendfeed.com/search...
- Robert Scoble
Wow, I didn't even notice that. Very useful.
- David Wilson
Ability to refine searches for comments is a killer app.
- Mike Nayyar
Hmm, does it actually let you search for a user's name/handle in the comments/content of an item, without giving you a load of "$PERSON liked this" results, even when their name/handle don't appear in the content or any attached comments?
- Tyson Key
How close are we to being able to hide based on the criteria?
- Brian Sullivan
Close... so... close. If we could create that search and have it form a real-time feed... that would do it for me. Historical search with the ability to follow the search in real time.
- Brian Roy
2. Now you can search based on numbers of "likes" an item got. For instance, now I can say show me all items with "netbooks" in the title that have 10 or more likes. This is HUGE because it removes all noise and shows only items that got a lot of interest from the community. Here's that search: http://friendfeed.com/search...
- Robert Scoble
Awesome! Makes Friendfeed less noisy to me. I agree some search fine-tuning would be nice. Still, this helps a lot.
- Pam Baker
Brian: yeah, I want real-time views into this data. That is a prerequisite to "track." Also, I need RSS feeds from these searches that I can shove into a room. I can't figure out how to do either of those two things.
- Robert Scoble
I must be a dummy. I can't find how to do that on the site. However, I did read on the blog that it exists. How do I get to it?
- Francine Hardaway
This can really cut down the noise in a search. For example, here's a search for items that mention the Steelers and only contain comments with the word towel. And you could also do the reverse. Cool. http://friendfeed.com/search...
- Tom Landini
Andy: I'm pretty sure it is actually a lot more than 2,000 hours. I'm on friendfeed almost every minute I'm awake and not doing something else.
- Robert Scoble
I didn't see it anywhere... sadly. I'm also looking to see if these advanced searches are supported by the API... if they are it is a boon for applications that swarm to subjects/topics.
- Brian Roy
OK, I'm totally liking the new search features...Now I can finally see who's shouted out to me in posts without getting a lot of "Robert Scoble" noise in the results.
- Alex Scoble
Aah, to answer my own question, the intitle: attribute seems to do the trick, cool.
- Tyson Key
i still dont like "likes", but its an interesting idea to search what you want..
- Terry O'Fee
3. You can search for times a specific person has written something. For instance, I can now see how many times Bret Taylor has written the word "bacon" in one of his titles: http://friendfeed.com/search... By doing this I learned that Bret wrote the word "sex" twice as often as he wrote "bacon." :-) http://friendfeed.com/search...
- Robert Scoble
Francine - just hit search with nothing in the box... that takes you to advanced search.
- Brian Roy
robert - just don't type "mona" and "bacon" - the search will take days,,,
- Terry O'Fee
The other day I was trying to search for your video on how to use ff. I wanted to share it with someone who is new here. But, I couldn't find it. I had to go to your site to find it. When I saw the title of your post, I realized why my search might have missed it. I don't know if these changes would have made a difference, but any improvement is welcomed in my book! I'm going to try it again and see if the changes help.
- Michael Fidler
I love it, you can search just specific services, too. Like JUST TWITTER!! Check this out, these are all my tweets that have 20 or more likes: http://friendfeed.com/search...
- Robert Scoble
very cool thanks for sharing Robert... Also of note you can grab the RSS feed from the search results (via Firefox addr bar only so far) - this is cool for those of you like me who use search subscriptions for research
- andy brudtkuhl
and FF is so well indexed in google. yesterday I talked about backtype in italian and after few hours was already the 5th result searching "backtype" in that language
- ezekiel
Terry: likes are metadata that you can use to improve your searches. Now you can see why people who are noisy on "liking" things are only hurting themselves.
- Robert Scoble
Michael F makes a good point. I struggle with finding stuff I have liked or commented on before. I hope the new search function helps with that.
- Amani
On a search for SEO if this was useful, I would end up with a list of posts similar to the Semmys finalists (though those are still personal preference). However I get http://friendfeed.com/search... which isn't exactly useful unless I wanted every conversation on FF that included the acronym - probably worse results than a potential Scobleizer post about lawnmowers ending up ranking in Google
- Andy Beard
Dan - so that means the API works too... hmmm wonder if that URL is rate limited.
- Brian Roy
frienfeed is the next (social) search engine and these new features are a new big step to the right direction...
- Simone Lovati
robert - ive noticed that the people who get "likes" are usually the ones who mass spam likes to everyone else...
- Terry O'Fee
It worked! I can see what your talking about Robert. You have a lot of content here, but I found the post of yours I was looking for with relative ease:-) http://is.gd/ihXV
- Michael Fidler
Terry: if you use a combination of "likes" and "comments" you can dramatically filter out a lot of noise.
- Robert Scoble
you have a lot more people though, robert....
- Terry O'Fee
My first comment ever on FriendFeed. I cannot figure this place out yet. I'm sure it is wonderful though.
- Hummie
Once you can create a feed from the search results and make an imaginary friend for that feed then search will become useful for me. Of if you could search on a certain criteria and get the results sent to gtalk in realtime (aka track) will it be useful for me. Right now it is helpful but not of great use for me.
- J Allen
Wow, I have more comments made than you? Wouldn't have guessed that. Yes, it is indeed an investment and this is very good news, Robert.
- Josh Haley
"Also, I need RSS feeds from these searches that I can shove into a room." This would be a huge feature. It would really up the ante in creating useful rooms.
- Doug Hudiburg
To get an RSS feed of any FriendFeed search result, just append "&format=atom" (without the quotes) to the end of the URL. Violå! :-)
- Josh Bancroft
Looks like this puts us one step closer toward filters.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Anyone know if these are supported in the API too? I've been waiting for that.
- Brian Roy
Yeah that's what I was about to say. Would be nice if there was a way to have separate filtered feeds, or a way to make a feed based on an advanced search.
- David Wilson
This is going to make life a LOT easier!

"Photographer Tumanc takes photographs at the limits – at points where opposing forces meet, complementing or conflicting with each another. Humans encounter the elements in spectacular style, and unless they play nature’s game they’re rendered insignificant by a greater might. The different elements meet one another too, earth, water, fire and air clashing and creating magical effects."

I like the picture with the for sale sign, a little more of that and we will have our housing surplus taken care of. Just saying...

Flickr User Asks Flickr to Check if Her Self Moderated Account is OK, Flickr Responds By Deleting the User’s Account Without Warning - http://thomashawk.com/2009...
Another Flickr account permanently deleted without warning. Her crime? Asking the Flickr staff to review her account to make sure that she had her moderation settings set up correctly.
- Thomas Hawk
The problem is that there's no real alternative to Flickr: A community this big combined with an infrastructure that just works (most of the time at least)...
- Holger Eilhard
Thomas - this is starting to get out of hand. Is this the year that Zooomr really starts to go mainstream because of Flickr's folly?
- Damien Franco
WTF? I guess now's the time to start manually archiving our Flickr accounts, as tricky as that'd be. :(
- Tyson Key
Something's definitely wrong with flickr and has been for some time now. BTW, notice that a staff member named heather responded in that forum thread and said "I'll look into this when I get into the office this morning and respond to you".
- Yuval Atzmon
With a name like 'flashergirl77', I'm not thinkin' photography, I'm thinkin' something else.
- David Wilson
Yuval, the response will probably be "We decided to close this thread"... :(
- Holger Eilhard
Hmm, what did the "Urination" thing mentioned in Flickr's reply have to do with anything? I'm puzzled...
- Tyson Key
David, certainly her photostream is of the adult variety. But the point is that this sort of stream is allowed at Flickr if you self moderate your images and label them as "restricted" which she in fact did. She was playing by their rules but to be safe wrote them to make sure and they just deleted her. That's not right.
- Thomas Hawk
Oh I totally agree, I was just taking the opportunity to make a joke about her choice of username ;)
- David Wilson
I posted an update to my story from Heather Champ on my blog post. They are now calling this one a "mistake." Convenient since it's gotten a lot of attention. Part of the problem though is that Flickr doesn't have a way to undo account deletions. Once they do it it's done with no possibility for retrieval for the "mistakes" that they seem to make over and over again. That's not right either.
- Thomas Hawk
Pity that they can't restore her account back now Jake.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas I don't understand why they can't restore her account. Surely there's a backup? Why isn't there an intermediate step -- suspension rather than deletion?
- Karoli
Karoli, you are preaching to the choir on that one. People have been asking about that for years. Check this out. If you search for "censorship" and "mistake" in the Flickr help forum you get 93 threads returned: http://flickr.com/search... You'd think that they'd figure out by now that putting these deletions into some sort of temporary state rather than permanent deletion would make more sense.
- Thomas Hawk
it's also interesting how many of the threads regarding censorship or mistakes in the Flickr forum have been locked or closed by Flickr.
- Thomas Hawk
I can understand that Flickr doesn't keep backups of all user data, because even though storage space is cheap these days, we're talking about peta or exa bytes of data. A better solution would be a temporary state prior to permanent deletion.
- Rene Wirtz
Rene, they don't even have to keep backups though. All they need to do is simply change the account to a private account. This way nobody but the owner can see it. It effectively removes it from the system but allows that to be reversed for the "mistakes" that they make. There is no reason why they can't do that.
- Thomas Hawk
There has to be better procedures that Flickr staff can and should take. This is just another feather in the cap for how dumb they can be over there. I love Flickr, but can see why so many have jumped to SmugMug and other services that proclaim that they won't treat you the same Flickr does.
- barl0w
Then there must be some sort of way to persuade Flickr to do that in case of investigations of possible violation for an account? When Heather mentioned that there is no Job Well Done Flickr forum it may be useful to raise this through Flickr Ideas?
- Rene Wirtz
"Deleting" an account shouldn't even be a tool in their box. The proper procedure any sane company would use is to disable or make private the account, notify the user explaining their offense, and give them some time period to either correct the problem or otherwise challenge the decision.
- Eric P
@Eric P I completely agree. It boggles the mind to think they can just wipe away years of community, participation, and work. I've downloaded all of my photos from their site. While I plan to continue using it, I've curtailed my community activity there since I can't trust them to respect me enough to allow me to make an argument for keeping an account I pay for.
