rsync doesn't like to copy files from host to host. This is sort of the "old school" unix way - tar everything to a pipe, then pipe everything out. It's how we used to copy directories remotely before we had tools like rsync. I'm definitely open to suggestions on how to improve this (even a fix for rsync, if I'm wrong)

I assume I can run Mac OS Leopard (Snow Leopard) via some virtual machine app in Windows, correct? If so, what are the best virtual machines for that? (This is obviously the opposite of VMWare Fusion/Parallels question, as I'm looking to run the VM on Windows 7.)
Unfortunately, you are not able to (legally) run OS X under a virtual machine unless you have a license to OS X Server. That said, I really haven't heard of anyone with first-hand experience doing this so I can't help you any more.
- Travis B. Hartwell
Not in the EULA to run OS X Client on anything other than bare metal Apple manufactured hardware. You can however now run OS X Server in virtualization but on a limited basis - http://db.tidbits.com/article...
- Adam Turetzky
VMWare is the only one currently that will run it... if you google it, you *might* find out how :)
- Tim Hoeck
I hate my Mac. I won't be sold on MacOS as an actual functioning OS unless I can use it on my terms on my main Windows machine. Apple is missing out on potential converts by limiting it to hardware with one stinkin mouse button.
- Tamar Weinberg
(and yes, I know I could get an external mouse, but I'm all about laptops with their touchpads)
- Tamar Weinberg
Probably not an option for you but this episode of Tekzilla showed pretty much the best way to Hackintosh. http://revision3.com/tekzill... (fast forward to 9:30 for the Hackintosh part).
- Adam Turetzky
You have to either a) go through a PITA process of creating the machine manually, or b) find an already created virtual machine through *alternative* methods.
- Tim Hoeck
Tamar: Three words: "Multi finger touch". My trackpad happily emulates a second mouse button. Not so sure about the third, but scrolling works just fine.
- Brad McCrorey
Brad, but that's an acquired skill by someone who has been using two-button mice all their lives!
- Tamar Weinberg
On the new ones, you can set the bottom right hand corner of the pad as right-click (control-click in AppleSpeak). So if you click the pad down there, it right clicks; on the other side, left. It's like having a pseudo-second button.
- Ian Betteridge
BTW, just a suggestion, but maybe this could have NOT been posted to the iPhone group? It's not really relevant.
- Ian Betteridge
I have OSx running on Hyper V, Server 2008, so it can be done. All the API's for Windows 7 are exactly the same for Server 2008. :)
- Karlheyes
Oh, and, the questionably legal method of getting VMWare Workstaion 7 along with the full OS X Snow Leopard can be found here: http://www.warez-bb.org/viewtop... I suggest using a program called Jdownloader to download the appropriate files from the selected Megaupload links which are the best of the bunch. Take care :]
- Marc Hilton
In relation to getting acclimated with one button and multi-touch: it didn't take me all that long to get used to it. Nearly 2 decades for me until I got a MacBook so 2+ buttons were pretty ingrained (I still use PCs). Multi-touch makes it much easier; one finger press for left click, two finger press for right click.

I didnt really want to add everyone i know on friendfeed to my facebook, i like to keep them seperate as much as i can. but you know what, fuck it http://www.facebook.com/simon... add a note saying you;re from friendfeed if you add me, then i can group everyone up :)

Thanks, Simon. I've not started going through these yet. :-)

I'm only going to add the people i actually talk to on here. I have a lot less people on my follow list than you, so its a bit easier for me :)

Remember, guys. According to FB, you're only allowed 5000 friends. Spend them wisely.

As if we weren't before? Were they really that many people here who didn't also have a FB account, even if they didn't list it in their profile? I've been with FB since 2004

Twitter appears to be down for me. Attempted to access it via web with both accounts; no luck. TweetDeck and Seemic isn't pulling up Twitter; nor can I access any Twitter pages. Web gives an error that reads "problems loading page connection was reset". However, the "IsTwitterDown" page says it is functioning.
- Hollywood Amanda
Thank you Bill. However, I tested that site with other social media networks and it's telling me everything is down. Maybe an error within the site.
- Hollywood Amanda
Thanks everyone. I thought twitter wasn't liking me this morning -- seems it isn't liking quite a few people. :~(
- Dee
Twitter is still down for me. I can't even log in to try and contact someone.
- Dee
Twitter has not released any information in regards to their site being down. I'm going to attempt to contact a few employees to see what I can find out. I'll keep everyone posted. ✽ It also looks like Twitter has been down for some users for 4+ hours (via research)
- Hollywood Amanda
Twitter is down for me as well. I'm just outside of Toronto.

I'm also golden horseshoe and twitter is down for me. The official status blog does not report anything wrong as of 11:05am EST

They've updated their status site with the following:"We are currently investigating a problem whereby some Twitter clients in widely scattered network locations are unable to connect to twitter.com." They could learn something from Saleforce.com who post their uptime stats.

Version 3.1.1 of the firmware broke a highly-important feature, as indicated in several different support threads. In short, when an application is opened, you can no longer double-tap the home button to pull up the iPod controls.
- Joshua Schnell
from Bookmarklet
Jeremy, are you running an app with music? I mean apps with its own music effects - not your music player. Trust me - it's broken.
- Tamar Weinberg
broke, broke, broke. I keep retrying it hoping that i'm just a little slow, but it stays broke every time.
- Joshua Schnell
LOVE this post. I won't say why I haven't upgraded yet, but I haven't, and I'm glad.
- Brad McCrorey
Not working for me in Safari. EDIT: Im an idiot and was trying it without music playing in iPod. With music on it works for me still.
- Robert DeBord
from iPhone
Glen, it doesn't work on my iPhone 3g. It seems to pop up sporadically when music is already playing, but if you're going from no music to trying to get that media player, I get taken out of the application and into the iPod application.
- Joshua Schnell
Glen, I have a 1G and a 2G. Are you running an app that is actually playing music? What apps are you trying?
- Tamar Weinberg
The screenshot associated with this post is actually one I created where it doesn't happen (Dactyl has no sound effects). But try it with a PlayFirst game or any game that actually prioritizes sound effects and music soundtracks, and you'll see that I'm not making this up.
- Tamar Weinberg
Jeremy/Glen - do you guys see what I'm talking about or do I need to be clearer in the post?
- Tamar Weinberg
Interesting to see you all go away when I clarify the issue.
- Tamar Weinberg
Glen, open up Flight Control. When it says "Would you like Game Sounds?" click YES. Then double tap on the home button and tell me if you see your controls. You won't. Exit out of the app and reopen it. Now click NO for the same question. Then double tap on the home button. You WILL see your controls. That's the problem. When app sounds take over, you have no way of accessing your iPod controls. Does that clarify?
- Tamar Weinberg
Yes, so do I, but it seems that Josh and I don't encounter what you say exists. Are you SURE you're actually running your phone with 3.1.1? I just find it strange that 2 of us can replicate this issue on three (I have an iPod touch 1st and 2nd gen) devices.
- Tamar Weinberg
Shrug. I'm not sure why so many people are impacted by this but you're not. I just don't get it. There are at least 3 threads with at least 30 people impacted by it in Apple's forums and it's as if you're the only one who isn't affected. Don't know what else to say. I'm in disbelief.
- Tamar Weinberg
Okay - since Glen showed me a video, I thought I'd clarify further given that I have more information. Maybe Flight Control isn't a good example then. You need to run an application which actually *turns off your songs* first. If you try it on an app like that (with no changed settings - I've never run Flight Control prior to testing this for Glen), you'll see that the controls are not there.
- Tamar Weinberg
Definitely do this over ethernet. It works *much* better.
- Brad McCrorey

Last nights dinner. I didn't actually like it that much, but the kids went NUTS. I substituted mushrooms instead of bell peppers, and added some fresh tomato slices and bulgarian fetta on top as well as the cheddar.
- Brad McCrorey
What do you expect? The kid was named Uhh Tee Yaah!
- beersage
I know this kid's an idiot (and that should anger me), but I can't help but laugh out loud at his persistent determination to type like a dumb-dumb.

We used to blame this on mobile phones, now we're blaming it on Twitter? What's next.. The educators? Oh, wait..

This is my first mac; almost two years old now. But when I get a new one next year, the essential ones will be: Quicksilver, Adium, Skitch, Aperture, iWork, Things, Evernote, Photoshop. Prolly Twitterific too, if it is still as good then.

Bit of a hoax.. Your provider has to allow this. Still, pretty cool. Is Australia the only country where unlocked 3G's are being sold by apple?
- Brad McCrorey
Australian carriers just unlock it when you ask them and request you restore your phone to take advantage of the unlock.
- Andrew Trinh
Yeah, or you can just buy an unlocked iPhone from Apple AU

After 500 years, the patter of tiny paws: Beavers start to breed again after being hunted to extinction in Britain - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news...
"Taking a swimming lesson in the tranquil water of the lake and then pulling themselves up to snack on tasty willow shoots, these shy creatures do not realise they are making history. But these exclusive photographs are the proof that beavers are breeding again in Britain for the first time in 500 years. The babies - known as kits or yearlings - are part of a programme to reintroduce the animals into the wild after they were hunted to extinction in England by the 12th century and Scotland by the 16th for their pelts and meat."
