Twitter appears to be down for me. Attempted to access it via web with both accounts; no luck. TweetDeck and Seemic isn't pulling up Twitter; nor can I access any Twitter pages. Web gives an error that reads "problems loading page connection was reset". However, the "IsTwitterDown" page says it is functioning.

They've updated their status site with the following:"We are currently investigating a problem whereby some Twitter clients in widely scattered network locations are unable to connect to twitter.com." They could learn something from Saleforce.com who post their uptime stats.

Version 3.1.1 of the firmware broke a highly-important feature, as indicated in several different support threads. In short, when an application is opened, you can no longer double-tap the home button to pull up the iPod controls.

iPod Touch (2nd gen) w/3.1.1 seems to work perfectly fine for me. Maybe the problem only occurs with 1st-gen iPod Touches?

Glen, it doesn't work on my iPhone 3g. It seems to pop up sporadically when music is already playing, but if you're going from no music to trying to get that media player, I get taken out of the application and into the iPod application.

The screenshot associated with this post is actually one I created where it doesn't happen (Dactyl has no sound effects). But try it with a PlayFirst game or any game that actually prioritizes sound effects and music soundtracks, and you'll see that I'm not making this up.

Glen, open up Flight Control. When it says "Would you like Game Sounds?" click YES. Then double tap on the home button and tell me if you see your controls. You won't. Exit out of the app and reopen it. Now click NO for the same question. Then double tap on the home button. You WILL see your controls. That's the problem. When app sounds take over, you have no way of accessing your iPod controls. Does that clarify?

I started music in the iPod. I started FlightControl. I selected "YES" on Play Game Sounds? I double-clicked the HOME button, and I see my "Music" controls—Prev, pause, Next , volume, Close, and Music. I don't mean to be obstinate, but they're there when I expect them. Under Settings, General, Home, I have "Home" selected for double-click, and "iPod Controls" set to ON ("when playing music, show iPod controls").

Yes, so do I, but it seems that Josh and I don't encounter what you say exists. Are you SURE you're actually running your phone with 3.1.1? I just find it strange that 2 of us can replicate this issue on three (I have an iPod touch 1st and 2nd gen) devices.

Shrug. I'm not sure why so many people are impacted by this but you're not. I just don't get it. There are at least 3 threads with at least 30 people impacted by it in Apple's forums and it's as if you're the only one who isn't affected. Don't know what else to say. I'm in disbelief.

Okay - since Glen showed me a video, I thought I'd clarify further given that I have more information. Maybe Flight Control isn't a good example then. You need to run an application which actually *turns off your songs* first. If you try it on an app like that (with no changed settings - I've never run Flight Control prior to testing this for Glen), you'll see that the controls are not there.

If they go with multiple sizes for a tablet, I think the smaller ones will be glorified iPhones, and the biggers ones would have snow leopard on them. The bigger the screen, the more users are going to want to multitask.

I see 3 possibilities. 1) a tablet that uses an app store and basically is a large iPod Touch. 2) A tablet that is a Mac with a keyboard interface and modified UI to accommodate using a finger as a pointer. 3) A table that is a Mac but has a iPod Touch emulator to allow people to use the touch-based apps from the app store.

actually I see the point Roberto's making here. iPhone doesn't come in multiple screen sizes 'cause then the UI for all the apps is screwed up. Making the iPhone OS run on a 10 incher will mean the devs will have to recreate the whole UI for the 10 inch screens. Not very likely that Apple will be taking that route.

iPhone/iPod apps will run as windows in Snow Leopard on the new tablet. And it will have A/V out so will replace the AppleTV. I just totally made all that up.

Hm. I'm trying to think how I'd want it to work. If anybody could, Apple could. But the idea of making a version of OS X that doesn't need a keyboard just sounds like a bad idea. That's *never* worked out as well as it sounds. Trying to force applications that are used to one size of screen work on another size screen also doesn't work out so well.

I also don't think a iTablet as a separate OS is a good idea. If anything, it's probably easier to get all of the iPhone app writers to iTablet-enable their software, because all of them have been written recently. Hm. Will be interesting to watch. Next iPhone or next Newton? Only the shadow knows, and he's still trying to repress those naked Steve Jobs pictures he found.

Yeah. I saw the fake screenshots. But they did have a good point and that is an Apple Tablet could easily be used to run multiple iPhone at the same time. Because could handle it. There are some things that I have problem with in that regard though. That is would a Table have the accelerator sensors like the iPod Touch/iPhone. If so, that would be very weird to try to play a game with such a big screen.

I usually get my RAM from newegg. Haven't had a problem with any brand from them. BTW, 4GB isn't max on a MBP Unibody. 6GB is, 8GB for the newest ones. =)

I usually go with whatever price is relatively low. Which was usually G.Skill. munchkin has worked well as well. Never had a problem with them. If you want to stick with the name brands like Corsair and Crucial they have those too but are usually more expensive. I just max'd mine out to 6GB (like an hour ago) with the Super Talent 4GB from NewEgg and so far so good.

the first upgrade I'm gonna do to my alu macbook is to swap out the HDD to one that spins at 7.2k RPM - I'll let you know what impact this has on the video editing I do on it. Many people underestimate the impact your HDD has on system performance.

Johnny: I had 4GB before. So far no difference really but I haven't started opening multiple RAW files in PS4 yet. =) And yeah, a 7.2k RPM HD vs a 5.4k one does provide a performance boost although I wouldn't be able to put a number on it.

@ronin with my work being video editing, I think I'd see a greater performance boost in that activity from a HDD upgrade than I'd get from a RAM upgrade, whereas you'd prolly see a bigger improvement from more RAM in your image editing.

I've always been a fan of crucial memory. http://www.crucial.com/ Before deciding how much you are going to get, you may want to wait for some bencharmk reviews of 10.6. Your MBP supports Dual-Channel memory as well, so you should install it in matching pairs for best performance. e.g. 2x2GB, 2x4GB vs 1x2GB/1x4GB.

@alphaxion That's true although PS4, being the memory hog that it can be also uses the HD for "scratch" space so a quicker HD will help when RAM gets used up. And yes, installing 6GB means you'll lose interleaving but the performance hit seems negligible compared to the fact that you're getting 2GB more RAM to work with: http://is.gd/2lvzQ
