KitchenAid®: Coffee Mills & Grinders - http://www.kitchenaid.com/catalog...
I just picked up the KitchenAid blade grinder. I know, I know, burr grinders are better. But, I couldn't afford one right now. This one was $30 at Target. So far, it works really well. The grind is pretty even (for a blade grinder), and the motor can easily keep up. I tried a super low end Proctor-Silex, which could only grind 3 or 4 tbsp at a time, and did a terrible job of it. I also tried a Black and Decker burr grinder. I bought three of them in a row and every one had broken feet on the bottom! - Brian from Bookmarklet
I'm in the market for a new burr grinder as well; but lived on blades until I learned and made the transition. But it's all just steps on the journey; and everyone has their own path. - Scott Henderson

Very very sweet, with complementary acidity and light unroasted nuttiness, and a pleasantly rounded aftertaste. Did I mention this was sweet? Not at all heavy, but with just enough body to satisfy. Sweet. Made it using the aeropress. Hoping my replacement siphon glassware arrives soon enough for me to try it in that. - Robin Barooah
Ah, so you got some! I don't have the Kenya. I've using the Mexico roast with my Bodum. It's great! It's bit chocolaty. I've worked my way down to almost no milk and just a little sweetener. - Brian
Having learned a bit more about the Aeropress, I suspect the over the top sweetness may have been more to do with that than with the coffee itself. - Robin Barooah
Veronica
I used whole milk today for my froth instead of 2%, and I think I like the difference. Do you have a preference?
I thought 2% created more froth or better froth... But I'm not expert. :) - Brian
Can't remember the last time we had whole milk in our house. It would certainly add more flavor and a different texture to the palette. - Dave Ploch

Can you get a decent burr grinder for $20 to $30?

I doubt I'd participate, even being the huge WoW fan that I am. Makes me wonder if there are any PvP combat games for the iPhone (now or coming)? It seems like it'd be fun to virtual-battle random people while out and about. Ad-hoc arena games like shooters and fighters, sports, turn-based games, ... - ·[▪_▪]·

Speedy coffee prep tips for the morning commute?
I've switched from automatic drip with a timer to a French press, which has noticeably improved my coffee. However, it takes a bit more preparation time over the drip method. Any suggestions? - Brian
I've been using an aeropress recently. I mention it often enough that I'm starting to sound like a salesman (which I'm not). It is very quick though. If you have the hot water and grounds ready, it takes about one minute to produce a mug full of coffee. It has the capacity to do a commuter mug in about the same time. - Robin Barooah
Also... if you're a regular coffee and tea drinker you might consider investing in a Zojirushi water boiler. That way the water is always ready at the correct temperature. It's great for tea too - I've definitely drunk a lot more tea since I've had one. - Robin Barooah

A laptop battery should be able to last an entire 2 hour flight from Oakland to Seattle. As much as I love my MacBook Pro, it's embarrasing to have it die mid flight on a fully charged battery while everyone else on windows machines keep plugging along. Apple's battery life sucks serious ass.
My MBP routinely lasts for 4-5 hours as long as I'm not trying to watch YouTube or something. - James (@willia4)
What in the heck are you trying to do with it? I get a pretty solid 3-4 hours out of mine. - Eric P
Did you turn Wifi off? - Pat Hawks
My HP battery (and I just had it replaced) lasts 10 minutes. I can't bring it on a flight because its just extra dead weight to carry around. Its not only Apple's batteries, we get the love too. - Matt Donders
That is bad. You might have the battery checked. I'm in the same boat with one of my machines (Windows), but another chuggs along fine. I'm swapping the battery to confirm the problem. - Eric - 100% Choice Cuts
i was processing photos with adobe's bridge. No excuse why I shouldn't be able to get at least two hours out of it on a full charge. The battery life on my MBP has always sucked. - Thomas Hawk
Same thing happens on my windows machine. Battery Life sucks period. - George Smith
Is your battery getting old? My MBP battery lasts around 3.5-4 hours for general applications. - Todd Mundt
I'm in agreement, but two questions: 1. How old is the battery? 2. Do you calibrate it monthly or on a regular basis? - Kevin C. Tofel
I imagine that most people on the flight weren't doing anything nearly as processor, GPU, and disk intensive as that. <2 hours actually seems pretty reasonable there. Especially if you have an older MBP without the LED backlight. - James (@willia4)
My MBP battery life has deteriorated from 4h when new to less than 2 hours after 8 months. I concur, Apple batteries suck. If using Aperture the life is sucked right out of it in about 1 hour. - anne-mette
wifi was turned off. It's the same battery that I got with the mac about two and a half years ago. Yes, processing photos is intensive, but sheesh,I still should be able to at least get two hours. The battery on my old Dell laptop did much better than my MBP. - Thomas Hawk
photo processing *IS* intense CPU work. it's really the same level of work as video processing, just shorter bursts. - Jeremy Toeman
It is really bad when your processing photos. My MBP is lucky to last a full hour of photo editing in Lightroom or Photoshop and its only about 8 months old. - Sean Davis
Battery tech still has a long way to go to meet consumer expectation. - Brian
I've never calibrated the battery Kevin. How do I do that? - Thomas Hawk
You're using your phone on the plane, aren't you? ;-) - Dave Roth
My 4 year old laptop gotused for the first time in ages the other day. Its one hour battery life was now 9 minutes - web browsing. And I can see my Dell Inspiron's batter life slowly declining after 8 months of use. Sigh! We need fuel cells. - Roberto Bonini
[TrollingForFun]It's not Apple's fault, it's yours!{/TrollingForFun] - Yuvi
It's pretty easy to calibrate and I set a Google Calendar app't to remind me to do this monthly. Here's the official support doc from Cupertino: http://support.apple.com/kb... - Kevin C. Tofel
haha Dave. Yep was using my iPhone on the plane. I've never bought into the whole turn your cell phone off on the plane myth. - Thomas Hawk
This is why I carry my Dell instead of my MacBookPro. Same problem. My Dell's battery lasts more than five hours. My MacBookPro lasts two. I hear new MacBooks are a lot better, though, if you get the small ones. - Robert Scoble
that does suck -- yikes - Shey

Nooo! Not what I want to hear after just purchasing my first MacBook Pro. - Ryan
did you turn the screen brightness all the way down?? - Connor P Jackson from twhirl
My Dell laptop battery kicks ass and it's attached to a laptop that cost about half as much as a Mac. - Stephan Miller
i can get my macbook to last 6+ hours with screen all the way down and bluetooth and wifi off - Connor P Jackson from twhirl
But it's a Dell laptop - Ryan
That's pretty strange - my Macbook gets 4 hours plus in "flight mode" (wifi off, BT off, brightness medium), and my friends / colleagues with MBP's have similar experiences. One thing I have noticed - batteries don't last forever, so budget on replacing them every 18 months or so if you are a heavy user - Paul Johnston
My MacBook Pro is a little over 2 years old, and I'm lucky if I can get 2 hours of battery life anymore. - Brandon Wood
Connor gotta keep the screen turned up to get the processing on the photos right. Thanks Kevin, will check out calibration. - Thomas Hawk
You could always buy third party batteries that will match the finish of the MBP and have at least 30% more capacity - Glenn Batuyong from twhirl
Mine lasts about 4 hours. Remember to dim the screen brightness. Helps to avoid processor-intensive stuff if you can. Watch movies on your iPod. Also, every 4-6 weeks, run the battery all the way down and re-charge. Try not to always have the power adapter plugged in (like at night). Makes battery last far longer, don't have to replace as often. - Bill Brandon
Thanks for the message. I was seriously considering switching from a ThinkPad over to a Mac for personal use (and running VMWare.) This is definitely something for me to weight and consider more. - Cindy L
Thomas, at this point in the battery's life-cycle (2.5 yrs), the calibration won't yield miraculous results. I'd still do it, but I'd temper my expectations since the battery has gone through so many cycles. Good luck! - Kevin C. Tofel
Maybe you should check the battery status. Not that I'm saying that MBP battery lasts long, but I get two full hours and something more if I turn off wifi (which I guess you don't need when flying) and set a low brightness. I never seen a Window machine running longer than my MBP. - Federico [Kurai]
My first generation MacBook Pro battery still gets a charge of about 3 hours. When I'm on the road I have a Location setting called "None" which automatically turns off Bluetooth, Wifi and inactivates those network ports. With Quicksilver I can just type "none" and it will auto switch. Then when I'm at a hotspot i just type "wd" which autoswitches me to only-wifi port on, DHCP mode. At my job I'll type "work" and it autoswitches to only-ethernet, static DHCP. It keeps all unnecessary ports off. Works well! - Glenn Batuyong
Your battery is probably 18 months old or older and is on its last legs. Lithium batteries have a very short life relatively and go from good to bad in a very short time frame. Sounds like you need a new battery. - Joel Ordesky
Weird. I have a 2 yr-old black Macbook, and the battery still lasts at least 3 hrs. - Rubin Sfadj
grab a tool called coconutBattery and see if your battery can't hold much of a charge anymore - if so, buy a new battery. To prolong battery life, turn off keyboard backlighting and lower your screen brightness. I find doing photo work (Lightroom, Photoshop, etc.) on battery will drain it quickly, so usage will play a part. - No FB
check out coconut battery to monitor the maximum charge your battery can handle. http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconut... - Kortney Jarman
Usage will definitely play part. Biggest power consumers are LCD and processors. So screen to dark and be nice with cpu usage! - Corné Wielemaker
I get about 2.5 hours with no special tweaks on a 17" mbp. Definitely better than any Windows notebook I've had. - invariant from twhirl

FriendFeed does behave differently. The listing is dynamic and whatever has the most activity (liked and/or comments) will push other stuff down. I think it'd be nice to have a faster way to prioritize keywords and people. Perhaps in a popup when hovering on a nick, there could be a slider presented?
If I'm reading an entry, and decide I don't want to see this kind of entry as much (or that I want to see it a lot), I want to set the slider for a keyword right then and there, rather than clicking through, adding a keyword, sliding. Any ideas? - Brian from NoiseRiver
Hmmm. Interface-wise, it's a thorny question. We don't need many more keywords stretched out there. Maybe a pull-down that just has things like Add Keyword or Add Poster in it? Ideally, you'd just hit an up or down for the whole thing and the system'd figure out what features are relevant in it, but until NR merges with Jaanix or Amazon Rankings, we got what we got. :) - Alexander Williams from NoiseRiver

How much does fresh grinding matter? I've tried grinding my coffee beans, and pre-ground. I'm not sure I can tell the difference.
I don't think it matters unless it's espresso (fresh ground vs pre ground) I leave my ground coffee in the fridge tho... didn't do research so don't quote me on that, but I am Japanese and have six taste buds so my palate is very much refined HA ;) - Mona Nomura
Then what's wrong with me? :) I can't really tell the difference. I suspect that something else matters more than having fresh ground beans, like my coffee maker, the coffee beans I'm using, filtered water, etc. I do love a good cup of coffee... What do you think are the minimum requirements for a "good" cup of coffee? - Brian
@Brian - you're probably right that there is something else more significant that you need to change first. Overheated water is often a problem - never over 200F, and many recommend 185-195. If the water is too hot, the acidity level rises and this overwhelms the more subtle 'sweeter / fruitier' flavors that are the difference between fresh ground and pre-ground. - Robin Barooah
Thanks for the tips. I had a Bodum french press once... I'll have to pick one up again and give it a shot. - Brian
I don't think I'm an expert - just obsessed. Totally agree about the automatic drip coffee maker. If you want a quick upgrade in method and you don't care about elegance, I'd recommend the Aeropress over the french press (thanks John for that tip!). It's easier to get repeatable results and gives you a lot of control over strength. - Robin Barooah
My other suggestion is to take things step by step. If you take milk and sugar regularly, you may well not even like straight black coffee, let alone appreciate the subtleties of the flavor. I would suggest starting off by cutting back on the sugar as you improve your brewing method. If you find that you like that, only then try cutting out the milk. Personally, I like both milky and black coffee, but I find that sugar masks too much of the coffee flavor. - Robin Barooah
I've been brewing Starbucks, which is a bit stronger than the typical stuff (way better than the garbage at the office). A friend from Seattle just sent me ten 12 oz packages of Batdorf & Bronson (she works there, http://www.dancinggoats.com). Anyone ever had it? - Brian
I've got a Cuisenart drip coffee maker. But I just found my old Bodum french press! I'll give that a shot tomorrow morning. - Brian
@Brian, never tried the Batdorf & Bronson - but just placed an order thanks to your tip ;-) I often order from stumptown http://stumptowncoffee.com/. - Robin Barooah
I think it only matters if you are using good coffee beans. If you buy junk, you won't taste the difference, something nice, say a Tarrazu Montecielo from Costa Rica and you'll taste the difference. I think it also matters how you brew, I stick to the old fashion ways to be honest, percolators (stove top if possible), french press, etc... always come out nicer, more smooth and a lot more flavor in the end. - David

People have complained about cookies here before. I haven't figured the issue out yet. Sorry; most phones seem to work fine. - Benjamin Golub from fftogo
Just tried it again... No luck. Perhaps someone will figure it out. Thanks for the help anyway. - Brian

French Press: Day one
I used my french press for the first time in a looooong time this morning. I enjoyed the result. Not bitter at all, and not much sediment. However, I found the coffee a bit weak. It seems I've got a few choices: finer grind, longer steep, more coffee grounds. I think I'll keep my steep time at 4 minutes, try a slightly finer grind and a some more coffee and see how it goes. - Brian
Congrats! More coffee is usually the solution. - Robin Barooah
Hey, thanks for the pointers. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow! - Brian
