My first cup was an americano made with Blue Bottle Hayes Valley Espresso coffee. I had a cup of drip from the Blue Bottle cafe this morning (because of my accident with the siphon) and I have to say that the results from the Aeropress were extremely similar.
- Robin Barooah
It came with a carrying bag which is useful since I'll need it at home while I wait for the new siphon funnel.
- Robin Barooah
I used it again yesterday - had 3 cups during the course of the day. I have to say the results were consistently very good. It is very easy to control the amount of coffee you make and how strong it is, and it is as quick and easy to clean as they say. It also produced great results every time with no real practice - which is not true of hand dripping or siphoning. The only drawback, if you can call it that, is that it has no romance to it at all - it's almost like using a medical appliance.
- Robin Barooah
LOL @ syringe... it goes PERFECTLY with the IV ;)
- Mona Nomura
Tried this with the Jamaican Blue Mountain. Surprisingly, FAIL. It tasted good, but had none of the richness I got from dripping. The Aeropress seem to do a very good job of extracting the sweeter notes but doesn't handle the body well, so it will make an average coffee taste sweeter, but do violence to something that's already well balanced.
- Robin Barooah
I think I'm going to relegate this for coffees that are past their prime.
- Robin Barooah
(note: that last comment doesn't mean that I have stopped thinking this is great - I'll be using the siphon or hand dripping instead)
- Robin Barooah
So you're having good luck with Blue Bottle beans, generally? That's what I'd typically be using.
- Veronica
Just having a cup of the Temescal Espresso made using the Aeropress. Very nice indeed. Definitely works well with espresso/mokka pot blends.
- Robin Barooah
i live in turkey and i dont know how can i buy. how much money did you pay for Aeropress? is it expensive?
- fatih gül
If only you can hook up to a hose you can do an iv. Neat device.
- Admiral70
i've had coffee made from just about every brewing method around and this one, hands down, makes the best cup of coffee I've had. very highly recommended.
- Brett Kelly
I need to replace my old espresso maker - this is definitely a contender.
- Caffeinated Sue
Everybody should check this out. Even if you're not a Google Reader fan or a typical FireFox user, load FireFox and go to http://www.feedly.com. There's a limited number of downloads of their .xpi plug-in, so it's first come, first serve.
- Louis Gray
I was about to pooh-pooh it until I read the part about how if you share it/read it in Feedly, it shares and marks it read in Reader. That's killer.
- Mark Trapp
crap. I read this as soon as I leave my computer
- Bwana ☠
from fftogo
Thanks Louis, I am checking out http://www.feedly.com looks like a great concept!! How do you find all these cool things?
- Susan Beebe
Just started to use it and I am immediately impressed. This just might be my new favorite reader.
- Jason Wehmhoener
@Susan, I found Edwin when he first wrote "Listen. Measure. Iterate." back in February. http://tinyurl.com/6crhsz We've been trading e-mail ever since. I didn't say the word Feedly or Feeddo for months. :-) Others have different stories.
- Louis Gray
I was trying it with FF 2 for the last 15 minutes. I glossed over the fact (on the feedly home page) that it needs FF3. It seems to install fine on FF2 and does not complain that it needs FF3. Would have been nice if it warned me that it does not run on FF2. In any case, will try it out as soon as I download FF3.
- Atul Arora
I grabbed it. I dig it. I will use it. Maybe RSS just needs to be looked at in a different light.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Kinda lame that it's Firefox only, for what I can tell is only so you don't have to feed it your Twitter/Friendfeed/Gmail/etc. credentials. Can't use fluid with it; will probably forget about it.
- Mark Trapp
Thanks Louis. I just got the .xpi and trying it out. This might be something!
- Kenichi Matsumoto
Dude, I'm all over this freggin site... What a work of genius..my..head..is hurting...from...such...uber

Now you tell me, when I'm stuck in the Wal-Mart customer service line.
- Phil Glockner
from fftogo
Looks nice, but can't do it... I feel like I'm "cheating" on Google Reader. Plus, many things were giving me javascript errors.
- Vince DeGeorge
WARNING: Using this added 450 feeds to my gReader!!! Screenshot coming...
- Vince DeGeorge
@Vince, it creates folders for "feedly" on Google Reader, but there shouldn't be any duplication of feeds. Are you talking about net new feeds being added, or just them tracking your favorites?
- Louis Gray
Ok, it's created three folders, z.feedly.favorites, z.feedly.people, z.feedly.seeded. It wasn't 450 feeds, it was 150 in three folders. http://www.flickr.com/photos... I thought it had caused major problems at first, but it looks manageable. I certainly wasn't expecting it... and scared me at first.
- Vince DeGeorge
A warning would be nice from the Feedly folks about this. Not a showstopper, but I think letting the user know will ease the sting of coming on board.
- Bwana ☠
Bwana and Vince, I agree. I told Edwin that during the alpha process, and thought it had been resolved.
- Louis Gray
@vince, @bwana sorry for the scare. There is a warning about that in the first run page but will work on making it more explicit. Also note that the reason why there is a z.feedly.seeded tag is because we are working on adding an un-install procedure which will completely undo the effect of the feedly welcome wizard.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
Deleted my previous entry when seeing Edwin's response. Edwin, I apologize that I didn't see the warning - I tend to run headlong into things ;). Your quick response from feedback is excellent, which is very important! With that in mind - "no harm, no foul."
- Vince DeGeorge
@atul feedly should work on firefox 2 as well. The reason we are pushing for the firefox 3 angle on the website is because we benefit from a lot of the performance optimizations done by firefox (and we are trying to see if we can leverage some of the momentum generated by firefox3 to get the word out). If you run into any problem on firefox 2, please log a ticket on http://www.getsatisfaction/feedly
- Edwin Khodabakchian
@Mark Trapp you are right: the reason we have been focusing on firefox so far is that it allows us to do real-time aggregation more securely. It also allows us to off-load a lot of the processing to the client and opens the door to supporting xmpp in the future. I am not that familiar with fluid but will take a look (a couple of our users are using feedly on flock).
- Edwin Khodabakchian
Another user of Fluid here. It supports userscripts, but I'm not sure if it has the sophistication of the Firefox plugin architecture
- Bwana ☠
Working with this for the last thirty minutes. Very impressed. I actually like the feeds showing up in Google Reader. Excellent work Edwin.
- Henry Burger
Wow, seriously how long has this been in the works? Still figuring out all the things it can do and how easily it does them. Very slick
- Andrew Smith
damnit. I have to like it. An idea that I had in the works (the newpaper/magazine style layout) - great work, we'll see how things go.
- Tim Hoeck
@edwink, I was just confused on FF2 as to how I should get started. When I tried it out on FF3, I clicked on the circular rss icon that the extension put on my menu bar. I will look for the same icon on FF2 and give it a spin. If I run into any problems, I will log a ticket. I completely understand the rationale for pushing the ff3 angle. My first impression is very positive.
- Atul Arora
just a note, when my FF restarted, I didn't get to see the initial startup page, because I have session restore enabled. It killed the start page. Just look for the circular RSS button next to your address bar.
- Tim Hoeck
Edwin, I got to say, I don't really understand your architectural decisions. You make most of the program local, yet you don't utilize your own storage for application data (instead, you insert all of Feedly's info on recommendations and people into my OPML file, which even if you're warning me I completely missed: it's not obvious). Yet, it's browser based, but I can only use a specific version of one browser (and only if I have the add on installed).
- Mark Trapp
You've got competing metaphors here: if it's browser based, let me use it anywhere. If it's desktop based, don't force me to use a specific browser, and don't use my existing services as your data storage.
- Mark Trapp
@mark it is a browser extension to allow us to be more real-time, not have to touch people's credentials and be able to scale better. But it tries to leverage and integrate cloud services so that it feels more integrates and people can roam.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
@mark we heard the point about being more explicit about the Google Reader integration and tried to address it today. The one thing to keep in mind is that although feedly is using the Google reader back end, we are not going after the google reader users (if some find it compelling, great) but we are instead to package all that is good in RSS and social sharing and try to see if we can re-invent a better start page for more mainstream users. This is beta1 and we are not yet there but that is our goal
- Edwin Khodabakchian
Wow. Well done Edwin. I'm super impressed right now.
- nealh
I'm using it since June/July'08 I think and I've always loved it. Nice to finally meet the creator's side after so much pleasure using it. Great review Louis btw, you got it good. ;p I simply didn't know it wasn't widely known. I would've suggested it a long time ago hehe.

This is a dollar bill taped to the floor of FriendFeed's headquarters. It's a bit of social engineering. They figured out it kept people from tripping on the cord cover because people noticed the money on the floor.
- Robert Scoble
The dollar bill trick doesn’t work with strippers though ;)
- Tony C (Unrated)
@Earl: Consider it a stripper-filter, then. You know someone's a stripper if they trip over it.
- April Buchheit
for some reason i expect a "stripper filter" to be something coded using regular expressions. sad, i know.
- Karim
The message here is that Web 2.0 companies are so ignorant of money and revenue that they even step over a dollar on the floor

@Scoble the old 90-9-1 rule :) (well almost)

You could always just superglue some road kill to those things. Nothing gets people's attention more than a dead opossum.
- Andrew Leyden
Heath And Safety in the UK would not approve....but I do!
- Toby Graham
"but has only earned 62 likes". This currently stands as the most-liked Flickr photo of all time.

I forgot about that photo. It does work, though. Everytime I visit friendfeed's offices I see the dollar and I'm careful not to trip over it. :-)

As an IE I can state that's definitely not something to publicize. Definitely not OSHA Kosher.

Reminds me of the deli counter in grocery store in Scotts Valley across the street from NorCal offices of MetaCreations (the Fractal Design arm of it). Local companies'd go there for lunch daily. PROBLEM: Deli counter pencils (for marking your sandwich menu) disappeared at frightful rate. SOLUTION: Deli affixed pencils with price label. Price: $100.00. Pencils stayed at store. :)

Chris, one of my cats loves to walk on the leash. He has a harness just like the one in the photo.
- Rochelle
Seriously, how does anyone walk a cat? I have two and the only time they walk by my side is when they follow me to the kitchen to be fed. ha
- Steve Sebestyen
from twhirl
@Steve; they get used to it after a while but it's nothing like walking a dog. you kind of let them explore while you take a few steps. after they get used to the routine it's a little faster but not like a dog
- mjc
so wait, cats are meant to be walked?? Had one for years, although I was allergic and stayed away, never took him for "a walk" once.
- Zee.
From Boing Boing Gadgets: "As a blogger, I have many enemies. Perhaps you're one, spelling out your hate for me along the nanoangstroms of your mind. There are thousands like you, from the anonymous Alcatel PR guy shooting sparks off his fillings as he considers the affront of my headline "Alcatel Playboy phone not even good for masturbators" enjoying an inexplicably prominent Google rank, to the anonymous commenter who is secretly my mother calling me a moron. You are in good company. Cee Bee: she's a small time politician who's more inexperienced than Obama. So let me get this, if mccain has a stroke or something cause he is like 72 this is our filler?
- orionstarr
beautiful Sarah Palin! now Barack Obama will be in trouble for not selecting a woman (Hilary Clinton)....
- Pajama Domain
orionstarr: Yup. Scary thought, isn't it? A person who's held a political office for less than 3 years would be next in line for the presidency. They used to joke that Bush put Cheney as his VP so no one would try to impeach him, as you'd be left with someone even worse. I think this was a ploy by McCain to get God not to send him packing.
- Mark Trapp
I know a little about her (probably more than most in the lower 48) and this just comes off solely as a calculated risk to win over disgruntled Hillary people (who don't pay attention to policy) while appeasing the pro-life base ... with a touch of that "drill, drill, drill" chanting thrown in. Not exactly my idea of a wise executive-type decision, but YMMV.
- M. Donaldson
I want a fast forward button. I want to fast forward to the VP debates. I want to see Palin try to use her beauty pageant answers against snarky old Joe Biden and then watch him make her look foolish.
- Jason Carreira
Republicans want to drill, she and alaska wants drilling. Guess it truly is all about the oil. Explains why Mccain won't leave Iraq
- orionstarr
While I do think being a woman was the primary reason she was selected, she's a good match for McCain and looks very interesting. Killing 'The Bridge to Nowhere' should win her points in anyone's book. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
- David Knight
oh and she totally looks like Tina Fey
- David Knight
Looking like Tina Fey is her only redeeming feature
- Jason Carreira
You're a fan of the bridge to nowhere?
- David Knight
We'll have to see, I don't know much about her. She better be more than a lightweight or Biden will crush her in the VP debate
- David Knight
I'm looking forward to it... I think the Dems should push for 5-10 VP debates ;)
- Jason Carreira
Mark: Agreed wholeheartedly, it's a scary choice. Loved the email from my christian conservative Reaganite buddy, "Who? OMG!"
- Sally Church
Gov. of one city, cause that's all Alaska really has...hehe
- orionstarr
80% approval rating!? That seems a little suspect, there aren't many politicians whose approval rating, when added to bush's is > 100
- David Knight
do people really think you can just substitute any woman for Hillary and that will fool voters? I think Hillary supporters like Hillary for her stands on issues (especially issues that affect women), her experience/her lifelong political career, not because she's got 2 X chromosomes. Odd choice, I'm with Jason - can't wait for the debates.
- JoEllen
@JoEllen You overestimate the intelligence of the American voter.
- stretta
from twhirl
JoEllen - Most Hillary voter will surely go for Obama since their platforms where sooo similar, yes?. It might pull some who feel like their party let them down but wouldn't have voted for 2 old white guys.
- David Knight
@JoEllen I agree... Here's her stance on issues: She's a creationist, she's pro-life, and an NRA member. She's the anti-Hillary.
- Jason Carreira
in fact, HRC supporters supposedly warned Obama if not HRC, no woman on the ticket. They did not want just any woman, they wanted her. So most of them won't fall for this trick. Also her pro life stance won't work for many of her supporters and some of them feel as passionate on that issue as conservatives.
- R. Ferguson
So she hates science too? Way to round out the ticket McCain!
- iTad
Jason: I wasn't aware of her creationist views until you pointed it out. Looking online just now I see she did indeed advocate teaching creationism (or whatever name you want to give it) in science classes in a governor's debate. Barf. http://www.dailykos.com/storyon...
- M. Donaldson
mccain, unsurprisingly, given his feelings about women, thinks voters were excited about "a woman" when they wanted "a woman named hillary"
- eric mortensen
Ha ha. A creationist. Perfect.
- stretta
from twhirl
This is just a prescription for McCain's wet T-shirt comment, the trollop, "c word" comment, and his membership in the he-man woman haters club from his stint on the "Our Gang" series.
- JoEllen
"Yup. Scary thought, isn't it? A person who's held a political office for less than 3 years would be next in line for the presidency" You were talking about Obama's 143 days as a senator, weren't you? I agree. Obama is too inexperienced to be president.

Okay - I'm impressed, OpenID registration flow worked pretty smoothly. XMPP confirmation process worked.
- Dossy Shiobara
Interesting, free software is one thing and well and good, but who's paying for the infrastructure and the manpower to watch said infrastructure? Still, it's funny that the software is called laconica, I appreciate that. :)
- felix
Blah. "Open source" for a Twitter-like service doesn't mean squat unless there's a server-to-server protocol, like IRC, so one can start up their own server and participate in the "cloud" ... otherwise, you're just standing up lots of islands of attention. Who needs more of _that_? ugh.
- Dossy Shiobara
Interesting. The license is a version of the GPL that compels the release of modified source even if its just used to deliver a service.
- Erik S
@Dossy, there is a server-to-server protocol. The docs are sparse, but it's there.
- Dave Winer
Feels very familiar... with the slow page loading and everything! :)
- Yolanda
Dave, I just posted a question (waiting for moderation) in the Control Yourself blog http://controlezvous.ca/?p=5 regarding the underlying architecture. I must admit, however, that their interoperability plans sound impressive.
- Ontario Emperor
Well, using HTTP POST and OAuth piggibacking doesn't seem like the optimal solution for the server-to-server substrate to me. Why are we constantly reinventing new protocols? We have XMPP with Pub/Sub extensions, we have JXTA...
- Vlado Handziski
one can run xmpp over jxta: eg http://collab.netbeans.org ... not sure if that codebase has surfaced or not but i demo'd it at j1 '06

Test post for audio enclosures through the FriendFeed API, the audio of the opening scene from The Godfather. The undertaker Bonasera, asks the Godfather for justice. Contains the famous line: "Someday, and that day may never come, I'll call upon you to do a service for me."
No Flash support on the iPhone means no awesome Godfather excerpts :-(
- Mark Trapp
Works for me. Thomas, the reason it doesn't work on the iPhone is that the player is Flash, and of course, Flash doesn't work on the iPhone.

It's not that it's ugly, it's just that I think it could be a little better. I'm not only talking about the whole site, look at the stream of info coming in, there's no separation of content, no visual help at all, sometimes I feel like im lost. Imagine a very light blue bg and maybe a nice border on top of the items div container. Anyway, it's a thought. I tried playing with the look of the items, and look at the difference
- Josue Salazar
A very subtle background color is a good idea, alternating colors may be even more useful (i.e. one item with background, one without and so on).
- Yuval Atzmon
Another option is use Google search. Type this in the Google search box: site:friendfeed.com/rooms It works but in random order. Not as good as the Friendfeed rooms directory.
- Neville Hobson
heh. Neville and I are five hours apart but on the same wavelength, I guess...
- Linda Mills
I, too, was looking for a Rooms "directory" within the FF app, a la Facebook or any other social network. Nada. Wow, completely lame.
- Mariva H. Aviram
for the same reason why you can't still go beyond page 11!
- Alessandro
My guess is that so that you find the room though social connections rather than them just being a free for all.
- Robin Barooah
I think @Alessandro is right here, they have had other more pressing things to do than release a room indexing app.
- xero
If Alessandro is right, how do they expect the rooms feature to realize it's potential...
- Bob Bichler
it depends what you you want from the feature - if maximum size is the goal, then you definitely want easy searching - if you want quality participation, then perhaps needing to find rooms through the social graph is better.
- Robin Barooah
What I want is a service that is inclusive rather than exclusive....The reason to come here is to find all my social networking in one place....not to have to hope some one clues me into where the 'cool kids' are...it has nothing to do with size...but easy dissemination of ideas and content
- Bob Bichler
Short answer, because people are lazy and they'll tell you to use google
- Pat Hawks
@bob - agreed that's a problem - I just like that it's not yet like reddit, digg, or yahoo! Groups for that matter.
- Robin Barooah
Pat: -- not sure I understand your comment-- can you explain?
- Brian Sullivan
Whenever this issue comes up, everybody says FF doesn't need to create a searchable directory of public rooms because you can just use google. Feels like they're using Google as a crutch.
- Pat Hawks
Well those people are overly elitist then. FF needs a room directory. ;)
- xero

Not to be too cynical but that shot seems to good to be true -- I wonder if there is more processing going on than the text seems to admit.
- Brian Sullivan
I'm going to side with Brian here. What is right: Comet McNaught was that bright in WA (I use to live there), but I checked my attempted pics, they predate this by over a week. I'm sure the comet was only that bright for less than a week. Second, the main Australia Day fireworks occur in Perth City...which isn't near a beach . Maybe it's Leighton Beach with Fremantle to the left...but it doesn't seem right. I did check the weather records though, there was a storm that night, and it's in the right direction
- Duncan Riley
I do hope it is real though...and I forgot how wonderful the environment there is
- Duncan Riley
Duncan, last year both Fremantle and I believe Hillarys held their own fireworks for Australia Day. I myself was trying to guess the location this morning. Being a regular on Leighton beach though it doesn't look familiar so I was thinking it may have been taken to the north of Hillarys. It also made me very nostalgic for Perth :)
