"Price is now stable, in fact rising slightly. Difficulty will now decrease as a result of less hashing power in the network, this is part of the built-in auto-correction. So I stand firm in my assessment of Wired's article of more than a week ago." - Robert Morrison

"The main point of the article is to take the longer view and perspective on things. So in that vein come back next year and tell me about the collapse of bitcoin, if true I will acknowledge your prescience in the matter. In the meantime, I am watching the price of bitcoin climbing again." - Robert Morrison

"Price swing does not equal collapse. The price of oil is currently being manipulated in a deliberate attempt by a few maverick OPEC members, most notably Saudi Arabia, to drive American shale oil producers out of business. The price of bitcoin is simply fluctuating, sometimes quite wildly. Big difference between bitcoin and oil proces, not a good comparison I think." - Robert Morrison

Re: Forget Everything You Didn't Understand About Bitcoin - http://www.businessweek.com/article...
"Transactions didn’t rise above 55,000 a day during 2014? A quick look at the actual chart says otherwise http://bit.ly/1zjYHzE and in fact it seems the volume rarely dropped BELOW 55,000 transactions a day in 2014. Do you ever even bother to check your facts before writing an article? This is not the first time I have pointed out such sloppiness on the part of Bloomberg when writing about bitcoin. One could almost begin to think this is deliberate." - Robert Morrison

"Look at the price over the lifetime of bitcoin since the genesis block, go to bitstamp.net and click the "all" tab in the date range. There's your wall. You can clearly see that although the price fluctuates, it is pretty far from zero, in fact as I write this the price is around $220 and rising, up 20% for the day so far. You can wish for it to go to zero all you want, for whatever reason you want, but the fact remains that it isn't happening." - Robert Morrison

"I said nothing about the success of the Internet, so don't put words in my mouth, that simply marks you as a troll. And yes, rational. Go look at the price of bitcoin today. Fully recovered to the level before the drop that started this conversation. And as for any investment advice from you, thanks bu no thanks." - Robert Morrison

"As I said, no, not a collapse, and if you take a quick look right now at the order book on bitstamp.net you will see buying pressure and the price is back at the level it was before the drop that started this conversation." - Robert Morrison

Re: The Price of Bitcoin Doesn’t Matter Right Now - http://www.wired.com?p=1703539...
"Well, that's exactly the point, bitcoin is not collapsing. I started following the price of bitcoin in early 2012 when it was hovering around $5, and a year later in early 2013 it was an eye-popping $15! So a price of more than 10x that amount now after another 2 years into its lifetime is not what I would call any sort of "collapse", particularly when today's low price was reached at a time of record selling volumes on the exchanges. There is some profit taking going on right now, and yes, some panic selling coat-tailing on automatic sell orders triggered at the $200 price level. This too will pass, and the price will begin to rise again." - Robert Morrison

"I remember back in the early 90's there were banners in Prague advertising "Iranian Culture Days" or something like that. Bill Clinton came over and put a stop to that... and played the saxophone at Reduta. :-)" - Robert Morrison

Re: Social media users feel 'ugly, inadequate and jealous' - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technol...
"I have more than 75,000 "real" followers on Twitter, so perhaps I know a bit more about social media than you realize. And no, the comment section of a newspaper hardly qualifies as social media, as per my earlier comment. Connecting people in the way Facebook does might be a good thing, but then again it might not, as nothing is 100% black and white. However I am less concerned with the simple "connection" aspect than I am with the other mechanisms that come into play on Facebook, the more insidious ones that are certainly not in the user's control. There is a raft of recent information about these, I believe the debate is just beginning really." - Robert Morrison

Re: Social media users feel 'ugly, inadequate and jealous' - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technol...
"This is is the comments section of an article, so I think only the very broadest definition of social media might include this as a fringe element. And I don't consider this newspaper a virtual community or network. So no, there is no irony here at all. Anything I post here engages only the simple mechanisms necessary to deliver replies to my comment, like yours. Sharing and liking on Facebook engages a whole raft of other mechanisms, many of them insidious and commercial in nature, that can have tremendous impact on users who are not aware of the degree to which they are being manipulated, and I'm afraid their number is legion." - Robert Morrison

Re: Machines Will Outsmart Humans by 2075, Say 90% of Computer Scientists - http://bigthink.com/ideafee...
"But at what expenditure of energy? For such a thing to be of any value to us lowly humans, the relative cost of "smart" needs to be quite low, I think. OK, so we might have a machine that is twice as smart as your average genius, but what if it consumes the electricity needed to power a small town? I think we would just have to pull the plug. In fact we already have the beginning of this sort of nonsense with the NSA's massive data centers, and all we are getting from that tragic waste of energy is trampled civil liberties and the end of privacy." - Robert Morrison
