10 Reasons Why You Should Sign Up for FriendFeed
I wish there was a AIR client for FF though. - barl0w
Twhirl works well for FF and it's an AIR client. - Bob M. Montgomery from twhirl
Great article. I want to learn more about the dumping the RSS feeder part. You should share some tips with that. Good stuff. - Amani
Love seeing FF through the eyes of someone who's not a traditional techie =) - FFing Enigma
Thanks Bob! - barl0w
A big part of why I wrote this post and have it running in my number one photo spot on Flickr right now is because I want more of my photography friends to sign up for the service. I *love* seeing photos here on FriendFeed and there are so many talented photographers who are not here yet who need to be. If we can get more of them to sign up, you guys will love their work. Of course there are many great photographers already on here but still a lot more who could join. - Thomas Hawk
I had to re-share this with all my FB friends. :) - Kelly W.
Still trying to figure out this whole friendfeed experience. I've had the account for a while and see lots of my twitter friends posting via ff - Demetri Mouratis
great piece! - mashable
Hi Demetri =) Different people use FF different ways because they want to get different things out of it. What are you hoping to get out of it? - FFing Enigma
Thanks for the tip. I had FF but really never 'got' what it was for. This helped! - Molly Nichelson from twhirl
Nice post Thomas. - Paul Wade
TH - for those photographers that are not on here, I put their flickr id into my Flickr Imaginary friend and see their images that way. However, it would be nice to get more photographers on here with their reader shares and such... - Justin Korn
This is definitely the best "Why Friendfeed" post I've seen. - Nick in Manila
Justin, agreed. I have a bunch of imaginary friend accounts for Flickr/Zooomr users as well. But it is nicer when they actually have accounts here, their work can be liked and commented to the larger FF community, etc. It seems like a few new people signed up today based on this post so I'm happy for that. Thanks Nick! - Thomas Hawk
I have AlertThingy FriendFeed Edition as well as AlertThingy v2 - Outsanity
Well said, Thomas. :) - Josh Haley
Nice list of reasons, all well thought out. While I'm at it, I wanted to tell you that I really like your new blog design too. - Karoli
Do most folks use FF in Standard or Real-time view mode? - Scott Loftesness
Only ever real-time.. it sits nicely on the second monitor as a Chrome App. - Greg Gannicott
Realtime here... - Chris Gulker
Did you just reformatted your post, Thomas? It a lot easier to scan through now. - Alan Le
Alan, a lot of times I post first and edit later. I probably shouldn't do that, but yeah, after posting I broke up some of the paragraphs better, bolded a few things etc., to make it easier to read. - Thomas Hawk
That's great. Make sure to check out Windows Live Writer for formatting blog posts if you haven't already yet. By the way, I love the new blog design. It's much better than when I helped you with the html way back. - Alan Le
Y'know... I must've spent two months randomly Tweeting things like "Will someone PLEASE explain to me why I should be using FriendFeed?" ... And then two days ago I start using my account (I'd had one for a while)... and NOW someone finally makes a post outlining why I should be here. You're two days late, Mr. Hawk, two days late. :P - Lou
actually, there's no search for Russian word forms on Frf. For me that looks as if there's no search at all - orie
hmmm.. I didn't know that orie. It seems like there is a lot of international users on FF, that's surprising to me. - Thomas Hawk
I've been trying to make sense of FF for months now, but every time I come away confused. As it is I feel like I'm drowning under all the social networking sites available. I use Twitter, Plurk and Facebook the most, and I use so I only have to post status updates once. How can I integrate FF into this without making things even more confusing? - Chris Taylor
oooh! I found the zooomr version of this post with no formatting and I whined somewhere else in my FF feed. This one with all the formatting is better :D - Tamar Weinberg
I really liked how you did a post on Flicker - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
All good reasons but #10 is my #1 reason :) - Mark Krynsky
Mark - agreed. Also, Thomas ... very nice blog. I like. - Amani
@Tamar, the unformated text was a problem on the Zooomr image. Kristopher's fixed that bug now so text in descriptions on Zooomr photos should format correctly now. - Thomas Hawk
I wasn't using FF, but signed up after your post. Now let's see if it is really so useful ;-) - Marcel Körner
@Marcel also take into consideration who you are subscribed to. Aside from maybe four on your current sub list, they are not very active at all on FF. This will affect your experience here. - Carlos Ayala
Didn't know there was a "Porn" room on FF (see screenshot)... - David Young
how did you see that they are not active on FF? - Marcel Körner
David, the "porn" room on FriendFeed isn't all that active actually. I'm not really interested in porn per se, just thought it was a good group name to claim in the great FriendFeed land group name grab of 2008. - Thomas Hawk
@Marcel by their numbers, and the fact that i know most of them and can tell you first hand that they are not. (if you hover over people's names you will see their numbers) - Carlos Ayala
still hard to beat 5 years on for speed - Thomas Power
So true Thomas: people still can't as a majority read dynamic feeds. - Zu from AOD

Hey Shawn, Just saw this thread and always open to feedback - what do you think we can do to improve Mashable in your eyes? Thanks in advance, Pete - mashable
WoW....Mashable!....errrrr....heyyyyy....ummmm....never met anyone famous before, no J/K So you’re serious in asking your question? So to your point, you’re HOT right now, but YES, lacking in really key areas, but nonetheless you’re raking in the money. - sofarsoShawn
To your question specifically, as @Mashable’s grown you’ve aggrandized & annexed territory over reaching beyond sufficient networks and to answer you question appropriately if you serious and in asking what you can do to improve in my own eyes, we gotta do this in a manner more appropriate than a FF thread. So i Ieft you my info at, lemme know, I am severly curious and interested to see now what you think, and yea my apologies as to what I said. Im seriously surprised you care. - sofarsoShawn
always interested in making mashable better! you've got my details I think if you wanna mail thoughts over - saw your mail come in earlier - mashable
Yeah you already mentioned as much, but read above again. Mashable better in what terms? In what areas? With what criteria? And how would you be measuring: both qualitatively/quantifably? Through my eyes is far to{ ambigously metaphorical (pretty colours vs how things are understood and through what POV etc etc) otherwise I'm just pissing against the wind. Sooooooooo Tamara has my info... more... - sofarsoShawn from iPhone

It's not actually spam. Read the comment: it's on topic. The rest of the account isn't spammy either. - Akiva
No, we weren't talking about ewing2001. There was a spammer (username suatuigamala) leaving commentspam in the post. It's an unfortunate artifact that Micah's calling-out now points to an innocent commenter after the spam was removed. :-) - Kevin Fox

Facebook has patented the News Feed?? Surely they weren't the first to invent it? - mashable

Mashable Playing it Dirty with Google Buzz Count -
"Hey Syed, Thanks for the feedback. We don't consider this "playing it dirty" and we're totally transparent about how that button works - it says it right in the post. This method is not as accurate as it would be if there was an API available to grab the data directly from Buzz, but there is no way to do that yet. (If you have one, tell us - we'd love to do it.) Once Google releases official buttons, we'll definitely use those and the counts will probably be much higher, since right now we can't track people pasting our links into Buzz, sharing them directly from Google Reader and the many more use cases that exist. This method definitely adds value in its current state because it lets readers compare the relative popularity of posts. I agree it's not perfect, but it's the best we can do without official APIs from Google." - mashable

it's wrong for parents to offload parenting to the govt imho - Chris Heath
Filtering adult websites is totally ok. Just let adults access everything if they want through a registry. People that go around the main DNS can easily get detected and parents can be contacted by email (that DNS circumvention or packet encryption is happening) - Charbax

i like this andrew guy... i like the cut of his jib - Chris Heath
The parents need one tool to do the filtering, simply DNS filtering and instant email alerts if DNS is circumvented or Encryption is used on a Child-only ADSL/Cable connection - Charbax
software filters are BS and you cannot require parents to understand how to setup private filtering on their Windows/Mac crap-PCs - Charbax

Having a hardware filter is fine Charbax but it should be opt-in. - ralphsaunders
Nah, it should be standard and Adults should be able to opt-out - Charbax
They provide barf bags with the 3D glasses. This whole 3D movie business is BS - Charbax
Why? People should be able to view what they want. - ralphsaunders
Yeah, adults can decide to unlock an ADSL/Cable/Fiber internet connection opt-in. Even parents could decide to opt-in to unlock it completely or to unlock it only through a password - Charbax
Charbax. you're a star. I heard about this when channel 4 had a 3d week the other month and then lost the link. thanks for that!! - Andy

It would be a mammoth task to impliment though charbax. - ralphsaunders
mind you, i don't have a hd tv yet so I could hold out a bit longer if i thought it would be worth it - Andy
Nah it's just an upgrade of the DNS servers. And the Government could enlist a few thousand volunteer adults who can help tagging un-tagged adult sites and stuff using a browser plugin - Charbax
Watchmen wasnt that bad - Carlos Trope
i saw the directors cut version of watchmen... i liked it. - Chris Heath
Its never that simple Charbax. - ralphsaunders
it could be that simple. I'd be ok if the Government simply ask Google to host the DNS server using Google Safe Search filters and unlocked through a parents-only password - Charbax
they should just get set up with opendns - Chris Heath
If they want to. - ralphsaunders
of course - Chris Heath
if you circumvent the main DNS, it is instantly detected so an email could be sent to the parents saying something like "your children might be circumventing DNS or using encryption " - Charbax
Not sure how well that would scale... - ralphsaunders
well something like this needs to be done. Seriously, kids just 10 years old even younger are faced with this and child psychologists say it's really not healthy - Charbax
Audible Pick 1: James Caan, The Real Deal, - Leo Laporte

Audible Pick 2: Charlie Rose - Leo Laporte
Wait... you want to ban types of TV now? - ralphsaunders
They could easily filter TV programs for adult-only stuff if all TV was IPTV - Charbax
But TV monopolies wouldn't want that to happen. Real IPTV everywhere would mean people would get Youtube, Twit and all those decentralized shows directly onto their tv - Charbax
i don't think i'll go 3D for a long long time... if at all - Chris Heath
You're crazy Charbax - ralphsaunders
I want it the other way round. i want the freedom of the internet but in the comfort of my armchair on my big screen tv - Andy
i don't want to be sitting at my computer all night - Andy

true. my mum in law smokes like a chimney even though her husband had a triple heart by-pass caused 80% by smoking all his life. she knnows danger but "needs" to smoke (her words) - Andy
hey bill. i don't smoke but part of me wants to start just to cock a finger at all the nanny state warnings and political correctness around leading a healthy lifestyle. anyone else feel like that? - Andy
Merry Christmas everyone! - Pearletta Wilson
Great show TWiTs! - Chris Heath

"Hey oboy and Dean, Replied over on Media Caffeine already but thought I'd paste it here in case you missed it. Have a great weekend. ---- Hey folks, Always love constructive criticism…helps us grow! That said, we’re a bit confused by the objection here…the post is intended to be tongue-in-cheek … we’re not running for Presidential Election in 2012 and we won’t have a policy of “War on Fail Whales”. The post is accompanied by a campaign banner featuring a piece of Pecan Pie and the slogan “Yes Pecan”. We saw we were neck and neck with Obama and thought that was pretty absurd - figured it would make a fun weekend post. There’s even a smiley face in the title to be extra-clear that we’re kidding. Perhaps it’s time for us to give up on the jokes and go back to the day job? :) Anyway, subbing to Media Caffeine cos it looks like you write some cool stuff.
