Why I'll Have A FriendFeed Christmas

FriendFeed for the time being is not going anywhere. For the past week the lack of information has troubled and angered me, especially in regards to the termination date for the service. Now, almost a week on, the lack of information now gives me comfort.

When ever you here about a take over of a car company or any business merger, the plans for both sides are well documented and everyone involved knows the road map ahead. So far, no one knows what will happen to friendfeed.com and I believe that is because either that hasn't been decided or there is no immediate plans to throw the switch.

Facebook either doesn't want it or simply doesn't care. They got the talent and that is what they were after. FriendFeed posed no real threat to them and a great majority double fisted the sites anyway. So, since it is not an issue to them... it's not an issue to them. The site can continue to function as normal, with pace of updates and servicing slowing as time moves forwards... but it's not going away.

It would be nice to get some form of notification but until told otherwise, it's business as usual. Even more so, if some form of monetization strategy is implemented, say with adds or even a premium subscription base, the FriendFeed service could not only continue long term but become a profitable venture. Now I'm not saying it's going to make Diddy-style dollars but Sanjya still eats well.

None other than rampant fanboy love.... but I tell you what... on the morning of December 25th, 2009, I plan to make my post wishing you all a Merry Christmas, toast the FriendFeed team and enjoy the day with my family and friends, digital or otherwise...

Lindsey, agreed, but what do they gain by not telling us that information if they know it? FriendFeed makes no money, no refunds need be paid and no customers are being hurt. In the cold hard truth, the team has cashed out and now have a bigger fish to fry. If they switch it off tomorrow, will you stop using Facebook because they now work there? No PR worries at all. It makes no sense for them to keep it quiet so, sense being the only thing I can go on, I must believe the information is not at hand.

So, in other words... no ice bergs ahead at this stage. That means, crew of the good ship FriendFeed, I'm gonna keep pushing this site hard, promoting it and the community like I have a heater strapped to the front of the boat.

Johnny, there is quite a bit of sense as to everyone keeping quiet about what is going to happen. Facebook have just bought themselves a competitive advantage and they are not about to give away that advantage by saying what it is that they will be doing now are they?

Other than releasing Facebook real-time search, buying FriendFeed and launching the Facebook Lite beta all withing 48 hours... yeah, they are keeping their cards close to their chest :P

Yeah but all of the FB announcements not relating to FF were already complete with the FF team. Therefore you can only expect that the FF team will be working on some things that a VERY different. I also read that the FF team were actually being broken up an duferemt people were going to be in different areas at FB.

Sorry, I should have been a touch mor specific. By stupid food I was more referring to over-processed, ingredient-laden, prepared or instant food. But organic is also overrated. Just because a food claims to be organically grown that doesn't make it better. At least here in the states there are many loopholes to the organic labeling laws....

I read a study recently, (can't remember the citation now) that revealed that eating 1 cup of blueberries a day improves balance and proprioception, due to the particular blend of antioxidants in them and the way they interact with each other. Whereas regularly eating onions (for example), that also contain many antioxidants, improves memory. Random bit of interesting (to me anyway) trivia :)

My dad was just telling me about his experience with Dell recently, and he even paid extra to get the 24 hour on-site support. They refused to help him, continually blaming the issue on AOL Instant Messenger for something as simple as a webcam problem. Funny thing is I still can't convince him to get a Mac. :-) Darn Windows users...

Dell tech support was kick-butt in the 1990s, back when Dells cost 2X everyone else's stuff. I used to recommend the $99 service packages. But starting 2003-04 with some really bad experiences where I had to bug Dell-corporate-higher-ups to get service, I now don't recommend Dell to anyone except cheap-skates (definitely not to any corporations). Don't know which year Dell decided to lobotomize their customer service. Does anyone know?

Dell has great support on their site. You can, with a little searching, find about any info you need. As a rule, I don't call support lines; only as a last resort. I prefer a more hands-on approach and really enjoy fixing most problems myself. Warranty support is a whole 'nother animal. I better be able to understand and communicate with the tech on the other end or..well, it's email time and time to post about it.

Dale - Only time I call Dell tech support is for real-life hardware issues (e.g. non-working laptop screen). And since 2003 it has sucked... I don't want to spend 10 hrs on the phone rechecking all the stuff I've already checked, when all I need is a 90 sec visit. Once it took 9 months, 15 hrs, talking to corporate, etc..., and the in-person visit was probably <60 sec.

You are paying for the support when you buy an Apple product. Their margins would be higher than Dell, HP etc.

Lindsey, I used to do Gateway tech support in Houston, TX. I used to do support for Microsoft Bob of all operating systems! I admit back then I knew absolutely nothing, yet somehow people turned to me to fix their problems.

With 30 to 50 percent profit margins I would have better support too. Plus, when you have 12 customers as opposed to 12000, the game changes. It should be the other way around, but competition is fierce in the PC market. When you are 'boutique', things can be different.

Let's face it, service everywhere has degraded. I've heard horror stories about all of them. I just heard about this cracking case issue earlier this evening. http://friendfeed.com/dadeo... Not sure what to think about that..it does seem like a widespread problem. I bet Apple is sweating a big recall. They won't admit it's their fault and at least one of the complaints I read Apple blamed the customer. This could get real sticky, real fast.

The fact that you can bring your Apple into the Genius Bar trumps any sort of phone offering other PC makers can provide in my opinion. Something about being able to see what's going on in person feels much more reassuring.

But for all of the care Apple puts into usability of their products, they don't seem to care much about the experience of customers once they own the products. I find that alot of people are a bit... selfish in social media. I follow people I find interesting. They don't need to follow me back. Maybe they don't think what I post is interesting even if I find theirs to be. We got to cut down on our ego tripping sometimes and let people enjoy the social tools, the way they enjoy em. Seems funny to me that everybody is still talking about this issue. What's the difference between this and telling people what you're having for lunch? Twitter is chatter but from time to time, a clear interesting idea comes through and sparks a reaction. Reminds me of the thought process in my own brain... tons of ideas, lots of chatter and some gems. Meditation helps me quiet my mind... perhaps unfollowing does the same. In any case, less chatter is always better.

I was a big critic of your Swisher/Mossberg article as I think you are misguided about where in the social chain FF falls-- HOWEVER... although I had a FF account for awhile doesnt mean I 'tried' it. In light of the non conversational approach twitter is taking ( @replies) and the fact its getting spammy and many people are talking AT me not WITH me I concede. I don't agree with some of your tactics or selling points but I do agree FF IS ABSOLUTELY on to something in a big way.

It would seem to me you did it "right" as it brought a strategic challenge to light. It's been the source of some great posts and conversation. It's not as though things are unsalvagable even if you made a miscalculation. As a strategist I don't think there is a generic right or wrong way. You have to align your social media activity to meet your goals. If your approach on Twitter wasn't working to meet your goals then you did the right thing.

Robert, "right" or "wrong" is immaterial here. Each user gets something different out of their use of social media. So each user constantly adjusts their social media experience to fit what they want to receive. Your mass unfollowing is not wrong. Your user paradigm changed.

When you were using auto-follow, it made the most sense to do so. Twitter changed, you examined what was working and what wasn't working, and made some adjustments. You are still doing it right. You also invested your time in FriendFeed pretty early on. That was also a good decision. (That will be $25, thank you.)

I just joined FF today due to a few factors: 1) Twitter went down and a light bulb went off 2) I've been following you for quite awhile and you're not lame nor do I think you're doing it wrong and 3) I finally acted upon all the advice you've shared about FF. If you follow me back, fine. At any rate, I'm following you here. I do like the threaded message form, which trumps any Twitter app. I'm also looking for value, not noise.

It just signified your preference to communicate with high numbers on FriendFeed where everyone can be organized, searched and found- it is thus more meaningful. On Twitter it was chaos for you that way and everyone lost. Why lie?

Change is natural. It's part of innovation. We adjust to new tools and technologies as they evolve, and because our methods of using them change, the tools evolve. Sometimes they (or us) take even a bigger leap and revolutionize. Then we get the next big thing, or take the next significant step in history. It's far better that you adapted, Robert, based on your findings, needs and experiences, than continued on with previous use patterns.
