Yay - discussion of the Google+ default list - YAY! - Allen Stern
hey Aron - Tina Chase Gillmor
Hi Tina! - Aron Michalski
I figured it would take 3-6 months for a default list - but they did it even sooner! The problem is that celebs have no desire to interact with normals. Twitter allows them to spread the message with just talking to, here they want you to talk with - that won't work. But what the freak do I know, I don't have 100,000 followers so my thoughts are useless apparently. - Allen Stern
You are right, Allen - Francine Hardaway
G+ over-weighting, very astute - cliveb
Allen: they needed to change their suggestions. Telling me to follow Mark Zuckerberg, who has never posted, is funny but really bad for new users to the service. - Robert Scoble

0.2c Developer community: SFDC attracts older developers, GOOG younger. Late middle still MSFT, Energetic Devs doing consumer web startups - cliveb
considering how much scoble loves google+, it's odd that this chat is still on ff - Allen Stern
Tina: because finding people interesting to you is VERY difficult on Google+. - Robert Scoble
Apple is a business disruptor - not a business partner. Salesforce, Google, etc don't have the same latitude. - Ankush Narula
Allen: that's because it's hard to embed Google+ in web pages. - Robert Scoble
and yet - my first time back in months on ff and i can see how much better this still is than google+. - Allen Stern

all the UX changed... - Kevin Marks
oh and btw - i predict 60 days and google+ will have aggregation too. - Allen Stern
fun fact; the bit of Moto that makes set top boxes was once an independent company called General Instruments. Donald Rumsfeld was CEO at one point. - Michael Markman
Kevin - self mute if you can. its better that way if you control - Tina Chase Gillmor
As long as Android app revenues are lower than iOS app revenues - Android vs iOS comparisons are moot. iOS hardware profits are the bulk of smartphone profits. - Ankush Narula

A Stealth Downsizing, as Shoppers Pay More for Less Food - NYTimes.com
"Chips are disappearing from bags, candy from boxes and vegetables from cans. As an expected increase in the cost of raw materials looms for late summer, consumers are beginning to encounter shrinking food packages. With unemployment still high, companies in recent months have tried to camouflage price increases by selling their products in tiny and tinier packages. So far, the changes are most visible at the grocery store, where shoppers are paying the same amount, but getting less." - John (bird whisperer) from Bookmarklet
I've noticed this! - Zulema ⋅ spicy cocoa tart
I read a story recently about how some people are stocking up on items they know will shrink. - rowlikeagirl
I love how tropicana did it - they have my favorite OJ but they are crap for scamming us. They kept the carton the same size, just removed 5 oz of juice - in my testing, consumers had no idea. Shame on them. - Allen Stern
Ha. I just posted about a billboard I saw where Coke was touting a 99c 16oz bottle. That used to be the cost of a 20oz bottle. Also of note: World's Finest chocolate bars are still $1, but they're half the height they used to be when I was a kid and 1/4 of an inch shorter. Also noticed that candy bars in the store are now $1.25. When Snickers hit 50c, I stopped buying them. That's too much for crappy candy. - Anika
Anika - I also think Coke changed their 2 liter bottles to get them ready for a shrinkage to something like 1.75l - just watch... the new bottle can shrink without you noticing it as much as the old one. - Allen Stern
Oh yes, the soda bottles are definitely shrinking. The most annoying thing about all this shrinkage, is that it's messing with decades old recipes. Where my recipes call for 16oz cans of something and I have a 14oz can, you can tell the difference in the outcome. - Anika

And now, a story about branded soup aimed at kids.
campbells yuck.png
Sunday night, I went shopping with my two children, at Safeway. - Stephen Mack
"What do you want for dinner?" I asked. - Stephen Mack
"Soup!" said my eldest, who is five. - Stephen Mack
We made our way to the soup aisle. - Stephen Mack
There were many choices. - Stephen Mack
"What kind of soup?" I asked. - Stephen Mack
"That kind!" my children said, pointing to the chicken noodle soup that had cars and princess shapes. - Stephen Mack
"Hmm," I said to myself. - Stephen Mack
I recalled that my wife told me that these soups were disgusting and very salty. - Stephen Mack
So I looked at the label closely. - Stephen Mack
"Healthy kids," said the label. - Stephen Mack
"Reduced sodium," said the label. - Stephen Mack
I did a quick online search. - Stephen Mack
This press release and blog post about it came up: http://www.fooducate.com/blog... - Stephen Mack
"Cars soup!" said Sammy. - Stephen Mack
"Princess soup!" said Sophie. - Stephen Mack
"All right," said I. - Stephen Mack
The next night, I was making dinner. - Stephen Mack
"We want our soups!" said my children. - Stephen Mack
"Very well," I said. - Stephen Mack
I prepared the soup. - Stephen Mack
I served the soup. - Stephen Mack
They had a few bites. - Stephen Mack
I also served some other food, including meatballs, broccoli, and bread. - Stephen Mack
They ate that, but not really the soup. - Stephen Mack
"Eat your soup or you don't get any dessert," I said. - Stephen Mack
(I should probably not do that. But I repeat everything my parents ever did, unwittingly or not.) - Stephen Mack
They grudgingly ate some more soup. - Stephen Mack
"Two more bites," I said. - Stephen Mack
They each had a bite. They ate very slowly. - Stephen Mack
"Now one more!" I said. - Stephen Mack
They asked if they could eat broccoli instead. - Stephen Mack
"Certainly!" I said. - Stephen Mack
They ate their broccoli without complaint. - Stephen Mack
I gave them dessert. - Stephen Mack
They were happy. - Stephen Mack
"Why didn't you eat your soup?" I asked. - Stephen Mack
"We did!" they said. - Stephen Mack
"But not very much," I said. - Stephen Mack
"Can we have more dessert?" they said. - Stephen Mack
I told them yes and that I would finish their soup. - Stephen Mack
I took a bite of cars soup. - Stephen Mack
It was incredibly salty. - Stephen Mack
"Grr," I said. - Stephen Mack
I was upset. - Stephen Mack
Here I was, buying soup despite being worried about sodium content because the label and the press release told me it was less sodium. - Stephen Mack
But I could TASTE how much salt there was. - Stephen Mack
I wrote an angry e-mail to the Campbell's Soup company. - Stephen Mack
They wrote me back. - Stephen Mack
"We are sorry you did not find the soup to your satisfaction," they wrote. - Stephen Mack
"Enclosed please find a coupon which you can use to try a different variety of soup which may be more to your liking," they wrote. - Stephen Mack
"We do want to make sure that you prepared your soup according to directions," they wrote. - Stephen Mack
Of course I did! I thought. What kind of moron doesn't know how to prepare soup? - Stephen Mack
You just put it in a pot and heat it. - Stephen Mack
"As this is a condensed soup," they wrote, "it is important that you do add a cup of water during preparation," they wrote. - Stephen Mack
I am apparently the kind of moron who doesn't know how to prepare soup. - Stephen Mack
THE END. - Stephen Mack
Priceless - Jorge Escobar
It does say "condensed soup" on the can. No idea that that existed. - Jorge Escobar
:) Brilliant. - Anika
*applause* - Rochelle
[Standing O] - Micah from FFHound(roid)!
hahaha, nice - Chieze Okoye
and even with the directions on the can. Although, from the letter, it sounds like you are not the first to mis-prepare the soup - Wizetux
It's true, Wizetux. And I've even bought this type of soup before, and should have known it needed water. But it's been too long since I've done so -- normally my wife shops, but she's out of town. The bright side is that now my kids probably will never ask for this type of soup ever again, and given that it's probably still too salty even when prepared correctly (plus short on actual chicken), that's probably a good thing. - Stephen Mack
I see Stephen remains off the caffeine kick. With proper caffeine, this would not have occurred! - Louis Gray
With proper caffeine, I would have made the soup from scratch! - Stephen Mack
I nearly made the same mistake a few nights ago :D - Shannon - GlassMistress
With proper caffeine, coffee for supper would have sufficed. - Micah from FFHound(roid)!

It's cool, I think Robert Scoble stole it from Socrates. - Stephen Mack
I lol'd Stephen. See, I am the opposite kind of moron. I'm the kind of moron that added water to Campbell's Chunky Soup more than once, because the concept of non-condensed canned soup was so foreign to me. - Curdy G
LolCurtz, during my bachelor days I would have done the same thing as you with the Chunky. (I remember having to go a neighbor's house once to borrow milk to add to a clam chowder can.) But honestly this is the first time I bought canned soup in years. I guess I'm out of practice. I blame the faded gold color they use on the red label for the word "condensed." Or maybe I'm just dense. - Stephen Mack
All that said, most soups are still very high in sodium; but Campbell's soups (even the ones that aren't "low sodium") are generally considerably lower in sodium than a lot of other brands' "low-sodium" varieties. Pick up a can of Campbell's Chunky or "Select" soup and compare the nutritional information to a can of similar Progresso soup. The difference is astounding. - Curdy G
I just thought about this story while I was sitting at my desk and laughed so loud! Good thing I'm working at home today!! - Georgia
Aww, thanks Georgia! - Stephen Mack
I buy these: http://www.amazon.com/gp... Microwavable, no need to add water, and just enough soup for me to not get oversouped. Plenty of chicken too. - Otto
What kind of a moron... ;-) - Brian Johns
canned soup is loaded with sodium... I don't personally think you should feed it to kids. but Hey I prepare my own dog food: lol little steamed rice, boiled organic chicken, low fat cottage cheese ... real food is better fuel for your body. - Julie Parker
As opposed to what? Fake food? I'm pretty sure your body processes chemicals in the same way regardless of what form they are in. It's all molecules. - Otto

Google doesn't have the finesse to do social or anything that is customer facing. How is Facebook their competitor? They can't do it. They never will be able to do it, even if Facebook didn't exist. - Stephen Pickering

@dbfarber has spoken a lot about SMS. Interestingly SMS usage is increasing rapidly globally: SMS is still king of mobile messaging with more than 6.1 trillion messages sent in 2010. Despite the popularity of mobile email, IM and MMS, SMS is predicted to exceed 10 trillion in 2013. - John Taschek

It's a fight over search. Bing has been steadily climbing as a source for visitors to our landing pages. Yahoo! and AOL have dropped substantially. - Alex de Soto
Search is boring. It's last decades war. It's still important, just like trains are important. But its not glamorous anymore. Twitter & FB are where the attention is - Stephen Pickering

If you look at this from a data perspective, the conversation about Google and Microsoft turns to more fundamental matters about efficiencies and creativity at the top of the stack. That's where applications flourish. - Alex Williams
Let's not get overblown about Google's problems. Microsoft's problems are sharper pointed. They have cost issues with their online services that Google does not. - Alex Williams
So is the platform iOS or is it Facebook/Twitter? - Stephen Pickering
Neither - Francine Hardaway
@alex - good point re Microsoft and its problems. Its executive departures, and more. Google's potential misdirection re SEO therefore redirects the conversation from Microsoft problems to Google's problems. - John Taschek
platform going forward is iOS and Android. Not quite sold on Chrome OS - greg hines

Interesting. Temperatures were in the 70s last week, and now the weather forecast is calling for anywhere between 1 & 5+ inches of snow
Layers. T-shirt and parka. - Kevin Johnson
That would irritate me. - Derrick
Agreed, Derrick. It's pretty frustrating. I'm kind of happy that they're calling for snow, but these wildly variant temperatures are always annoying this time of year. It's almost guaranteed that most of my family and friends will be sick on-and-off for the next month or so because of the drastic temperature changes. - Curdy G
I'm not going to be happy if the kids are off school tomorrow. I took birthday leave and had plans for a nice breakfast out and a movie not a day home with the kids. - Alan from BuddyFeed

Re: HTML5 for apps - we're doing mobile apps and HTML5 is nowhere near native at this point. It's getting close on the iPhone, but it's got a long way to go. - Matt M (inactive)
a lot of the content apps on iPad are actually wrappers around HTML5 - as we saw at the ChromeOS launch - Kevin Marks
You still need native code to shim lots of stuff that doesn't work well in HTML5 though: camera access, tabbed UIs, etc. It's much easier if you're building something like a newspaper app though - where you don't need to represent your app using as much standard UI as we have to do with gri.pe. - Matt M (inactive)

the thing that eats the battery for me is using the navigation... - Kevin Marks
Navigation with screen on eats battery on Android. It's getting better with the latest maps build tho. My N1 loses 25% of battery after 30-60 mins of navigation with screen on. With screen off (just using the voice part), it's 10% or less. I try to plug it into the car while navigating because the interface is amazing. - Matt M (inactive)

I love the concept of the show Undercover Boss, but there are 2 things about it that really bother me:
1) With all of the really nice things they always do for the handful of employees that appear on the show; how are the rest of the hard-working employees that get nothing out of the deal supposed to feel? - Curdy G
2) In most situations, the fact that the CEOs go undercover and actually think they can do the jobs that their employees do on a daily basis is really kind of offensive. - Curdy G
it's the same story every week - i don't watch it anymore - Allen Stern
That's the point. It's not about the CEOs. This show is set up to 'teach those bad mean CEOs what us working class people do'. CEOs don't watch this show. - Johnny
+100 Allen. Another thing that's naff about the whole concept of course is that they rarely seem to commit to doing this continually. It's just for the cameras. Also that guy a couple of weeks ago who cried at the drop of a hat was really cringeworthy to watch. - Patrick Jordan
I agree with you guys; but I have seen a handful of really good episodes. There have been a few CEOs that seemed to actually learn some lessons and, more importantly, discovered some major issues with the way their company functions. - Curdy G

you never know - it just might come from nowhere :) - Allen Stern
I suspect it can't come from nowhere: there just isn't enough word-of-mouth networking at an event like SXSW for something to spontaneously appear and spread across the whole conference. It has to have been laying groundwork for a while beforehand, so that a reasonable number of participants go into the conference enthused and word can spread from multiple beachheads. - DGentry
i just hope sxsw isn't a bust this year - i wouldn't be going at all if i didn't move here last summer - last year was a bust in my opinion - Allen Stern

I'm debating whether I should change the oil in our jeep myself or take it somewhere to let them do it. Walmart will do it for $20, and I'm thinking that might end up cheaper than doing it on my own. Especially given that I have no idea what to do with the used oil.
Oh, and I've never changed oil in a car, but it doesn't look that hard. - Rah-PM 2012
It depends on the car. Usually requires getting under the car to drain the oil pan, which can make quite a mess if you're not careful. - Kevin L
It's not. And I highly advise you NOT to let Wally World mess with anything on your car. - Bubba Botts
Yeah, take it to a oil change/tire place at least. - Spencer
I used to change the oil on my first car. I ended up going to paying someone else because they had a way to legally (and responsibly) dispose of the oil. - Spidra Webster
Find one of those coupons for Jiffy Lube. I agree, do NOT go to Walmart. On a really busy day, they drained the oil and didn't replace it and nearly ruined my engine. - Trish R
Jiffy Lube's not much better than Walmart. Lots of horror stories from friends and family using Jiffy. I hate to say it, but I'd taking it to an auto shop. Cheap oil changes are great until they lead to thousand of dollars in repairs. - Cheryl
Jiffy Lube will take your used oil. Change it yourself. - Jeff (Team マクダジ )
Pretty much any auto parts store will take your used oil. - Bubba Botts
I didn't know that about Jiffy Lube. Ours is locally owned and is pretty reliable. - Trish R
It's more about the individual employees at local places as Trish said. There are good Jiffy Lubes out there and bad ones, just like any other chain. I'd ask a neighbor. - SteVe C
I've never had a problem with Walmart except that it takes them forever. I have waited there for 3 hours for a simple oil change. - Michelle M
Its an easy process, and as stated above most auto parts chains will accept used oil. A small investment of ramps (not necessary for your Jeep), oil filter wrench and drain pain is all you need. I do all of our vehicles and save a tremendous amount of money across the four of them - and I know its done right. I've had shops put in regular oil when I insist on synthetic, strip the thread off drain screws, forget to put the oil filler cap back on. Screw dat! - JCunwired
what JC said - Jeff (Team マクダジ )
Yep, most of those places routinely strip the drain screws. Better to find a reputable maintenance shop and use them even if it costs you a few quid more. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
If you want to change it yourself, the store where you bought the oil will take the old oil back from you for recycling. They have to; it's the law (in most states). Just put the old oil back into the cans the new oil was in and return it to them. - Otto
Thus far, I've only trusted myself to change lightbulbs and wipers. - Morton Fox
Changing oil is easy. 1. Run car for 10 minutes (you want warm oil, not hot oil). 2. Jack up car. 3. Put secure jack stands or blocks under the car (nobody likes a car falling on them). 4. Remove oil drain plug and drain oil into oil pan. 5. Put plug back in after it drains. 6. Replace oil filter (coat the filter's rubber seal with fresh oil before putting the new filter in). 7. Refill engine with new oil via the oil filler cap on the top of the engine. - Otto
I just did this myself for the first time a month ago. Toughest parts for me were finding the oil filter, and having the right socket to fit the plug. Oh... and I now know how to be neater next time. I've found that Wal-Mart prices oil quite competitively compared to the major auto parts stores -- esp. synthetic. - Julian
I take mine to a Jiffy Lube-like place called Pit Pros. They always do a great job. - Paulette
I'll have to see if father-in-law has the tools I need. If not, it's still going to be cheaper to take it to someone. Definitely something I'll invest in when I can, though. - Rah-PM 2012
i am about ready for my 1st oil change in my new hyundai - i will be doing it at the dealer $28 with the coupon - i always do the oil changes at the dealer so if there are warranty issues they can never say "well you had quicky doing the oil change and that screwed up the engine bla bla" - once it's off warranty, that's a different story - Allen Stern
I heard on the Clark Howard show awhile back that usually it is cheaper or at least about the same cost to have it done rather than to do it yourself. Probably a good idea to find someone local or even check with the dealer. Our dealer is always running specials and sending coupons for basic maintenance. Last oil change was 19.95 so not bad. - adf
I've been getting my oil changes on my new Mazda at the dealer for the same reasons as Allen Stern. Believe it or not they're cheaper than Walmart. Once the warranty is out I'll likely do it my self or take it somewhere. - DB Botts - Just DB Botts
This is a Kia Sportage. I don't think there is a dealer to go to, is there? Does Kia still exist? LOL. - Rah-PM 2012

idiot question from me - does youtube have a filter for "Safe" videos? i mean we wouldn't want Sarah accidentally clicking on the gilmor gang for example. - Allen Stern
Allen, YouTube has a lot of work to do to be perfect there. We listen well and censor as we go. - Louis Gray
I feel like that sort of thing would be in the settings of the iPad, no? - Mike Nayyar
Mike, there are filters for ratings on iTunes and you can disable YouTube outright, but nothing in terms of video content. - Louis Gray
interesting Louis - Allen Stern

testbeta: I don't think we'll do that, sorry, but it's something we should reconsider. - Robert Scoble
kevin - they need to own the business side, the utility side - not the social (which is short term) side - Allen Stern

Yep Robert - Allen Stern

I hope Jony Ive takes over from Jobs.. he designed the first Emac, the ipod, iphone, ipad.. everything thats made Apple successful. - kevin stephenson
Christopher: I agree that they should figure out how to get rid of that link now. Android definitely is nicer on that point. But that point isn't that big a deal in my experience. - Robert Scoble
Hulu is the only service I've seen where you can pay for the privilege of being barraged with ads. no thanks. - Karoli
Kevin: Jony is definitely one guy I love, but I don't think he's that good on stage and that's one of the major things they need to replace if Jobs goes. - Robert Scoble

i would take a google ad over a facebook ad any day - Allen Stern
who's going to the Crunchies today? - Tina Chase Gillmor
I'm probably going; - Kevin Marks
Allen: I agree with that mostly. But the newer ads are more like Facebook pages. The brands are spending money to get people to spread their advertising for them (ala the Old Spice guy). - Robert Scoble
People don't click on ads on Facebook. But they *will* click through from a brand's fan page to some kind of exclusive offer on the brand's site. - Laura Norvig
Laura: exactly. - Robert Scoble
