7D is really really nice. But yeah price is an issue. I'm thinking 50D with nice prime lens for taking portraits.

Then how about the 5D? They're rather cheap these days and still a fantastic cam.

following up. I bought the 7D after getting the okay from the wife. Now I need a good walkaround lens. getting the 50mm f1.8 prime for portraits on the cheap.
