When I did UI work for GM, they had a mantra that 'human attention is the scarcest commodity'. As much as I like Ford's dashboard concept, its visual complexity would divert a lot of attention from the road. GPSes are bad enough. Did you know that drivers who use a GPS nav system devote more than 19% of their visual attention to it when the car is in motion?

Yeah, I got rid of my Sidekick phone 5 years ago because I found I was IMing too much at stop signs.

Kevin, that's a scary stat. Have a link? I'd like to use it for a preso.

Kevin, I agree that it's visually complex. I do however like the concepts of ambient awareness. I also like the fuel gage design as well.

Oh I love ambient and 'glance' displays as well, but this particular one has relatively low contrast and a lot of unnecessary visual complexity. I'd love to see Tufte take a pass at this (followed by a second pass from a visual designer to make it more visually pleasing but retaining Tufte's directness of information.

Kawika: It was a stat used a lot at GM. I'll see if I can find a link.

I wonder how long the "game" metaphor lasts for hybid owners. Those of my friends who have them seem to say the same thing at first, but over time the novelty wears off. Does building your infographic display around a concept that may not be evergreen make a lot of sense?

I do like the tank appearing half full/empty :) It would be cool if it sloshed around and tilted on turns.

I still play 'the game' and I've had my Prius for 5 years. I do wish that the car did a better job of telling me *why* my mileage is good or bad. Turns out I was losing 5mpg because one tire was low.
