Roll call...this can be great if we all participate. Add yourself to this shared map. I created a placemark on the 2 major intersections near where I live.
- Mark Krynsky
Mo, I'm a newb to the shared maps stuff, but I turned on collaboration and allowed anyone to edit the map. There should be an edit button and then you can add a placemark.
- Mark Krynsky
Robert bought me a new house in the northern suburbs.
- Andrew Trinh
@Bec...nice. You are the first brave female on here.
- Mark Krynsky
Cool idea, Mark! I was thinking something like this would be fun the other day. Duly added myself - or at least the nearest big intersection. ;)
- Jandy
Mousing over the usernames shows your Google profile info...cool.
- Mark Krynsky
I marked a bus stop near my house. But not TOO near. :)
- Nine
If you haven't yet...go add FriendFeed to your Google Profile...it will then auto-discover and allow you to add a ton of other profiles you have.
- Mark Krynsky
Thanks for the profile tip - I hadn't updated it since I moved here!
- Jandy
Thanks guys. This is coming along nicely. It's great to have as a resource to see where everyone is from. Hopefully this can become a standard feature on FF one day.
- Mark Krynsky
Canterbury, Melbourne, Victoria added
- Duncan Riley
Current count: 13 US, 11 Europe, 3 Australia, 1 Middle East. Happy to see many others add themselves overnight. Hoping more will continue this.
- Mark Krynsky
I've read the instruction and still don't see the button thing to add myself. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now.
-
@Jill, make sure you are logged into your Google account and then click on the edit button above the list of names already on the map. You will then see the pushpin in the upper left hand side of the map.
- Mark Krynsky
Added. Seems like there are a lot of us in the Bay Area...we must do a get together at some point.
- Neal "thePuck" Jansons
@Neal yea, we really need a FriendFeed meetup. I might be up there for Web 2.0 in March...or we can have one at SXSW if a large number of us are going. Let's plan and get the Upcoming page going.
- Mark Krynsky
@Mark Not gonna make SXSW, but am definitely down for working on an FF get together. March is long enough away to make sure plenty of people have time to plan ahead. I added you on Upcoming so we can start coordinating it. Anyone else interested/want to help set this up?
- Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool!
- Mark Krynsky
Pinned! sheesh this just cost me 1/2 hour of time as I scrolled thru all the folks :)
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Except for Bret, there are no FriendFeeders on the penninsula between San Jose and San Francisco. So much for Silicon Valley early adopters.
- Ryan Kuder
Cluelessness alert! I'm not seeing how to add my pushpin!
- Hutch Carpenter
For some reason whenever i use google maps in creation-mode, it defaults to some other maps I've used, not the one I'm trying to access - ah, figured it out. Had to de-activate some other collaborative maps
- anna sauce
Added. What a great way to see who's on FF in Austin, TX!
- Carter ♥ HTML5
A smashing success! Thanks to everyone who has participated. This is very cool. If you haven't yet, go ahead and do so. Original post here http://friendfeed.com/e...
- Mark Krynsky
Added. Surely I'm not the only FF'er in Africa?
- Neill Adamson
@Neill, that's great. You just got us to the 6th continent. I highly doubt we can hit 7 as there surely can't be someone from Antarctica that FriendFeeds.
- Mark Krynsky
The Antarctica challenge: OK, here's the plan: we need to contact Eli Duke (http://twitter.com/elisfanclub) he's tweeting from McMurdo Station, Antarctica. We have until February (some background I just found: on his 1st stint in the Antarctic he was a dish washer. In 2006 he wrote a functioning RubyOn Rails site, got burned out and tried to give it away on Craig's List...unsuccessfully--it's back online now http://listyourlist.com/ . McMurdo Photo: http://is.gd/8Ltk)
- Micah
I reshared to the Translation room to help boost your international participation.
- Shannon Jiménez
nah, friendfeed isn't a niche play. it's got dozens of users! ;)
- Jeremy Toeman
Alrighty then, I just sent Eli a tweet (http://friendfeed.com/e... ) with a plea. I hope I'm not taken for a crazy. Hmm, I know that could be my first reaction.
- Micah
@Robert: caught up with an old buddy over a cigar, bottle of wine, and a few glasses of quality bourbon. and i have to be up at 6. so i'm having fun. ;) sorry we didn't get to catch up more at the 12seconds/uservoice party!
- Jeremy Toeman
WTF!!! Nobody from India... ??? Am I the only one..:)
- Devakishor
Well I was late to this party. Great idea Mark. I have all of New Zealand to myself!
- Alistair (alpinefolk)

Why is Erhan Erdogan in the middle of the atlantic ocean on the map? Is he in the Bermuda Triangle or something? lol
- Alan Le
@Micah, great job on recruitment. Eli has added himself and we now have all 7 continents filled.
- Mark Krynsky
Erhan probably got moved accidentally. When I got to the page, and was moving the map, I accidently grabbed someone and moved them to the middle of the Atlantic. Thankfully, it was someone who used a special icon, so it was easy to search and put them back.
- Anika
Hmm, apparently I'm just up the road from Haggis.
- Rob H.
I just added myself. Curious - how do you get different placemarks? I like the Google-looking ones that aren't quite raindrops.
- Tamar Weinberg
Just an addendum to Spidra's explanation: To go back and edit, click the pushpin then click the "Edit" button (look waaay to the left on the page). Then you can click the icon to change, and you'll see Save button next to "Edit"
- Micah
Oh cool. Nice job reviving this guys. Hopefully we get another good round of users to add themselves.
- Mark Krynsky
Kind of frustrating to see how much time I spent on this map and then to find out someone had probably saved their changes over mine - hence mine was gone this entire time. Others should also check for this. In any event, thanks, Spidra, for the tip :) My other pet peeve is Google Maps scrolling incessantly out of nowhere. (Hi Jess.)
- Tamar Weinberg
Added myself yesterday. I notice, thought, that you have to flip to page 2 ... Can't we show all the FFers on one map, regardless of the page ?
- Ahsan Ali
I don't understand the "Connected sites" thing in Buzz. This is what it looks like for me, but apparently other people don't have the FriendFeed option?
I never setup a Google profile, but maybe that's the way to get it -- add ff to your google profile, then go to this dialog to add it to buzz. A nice easy 5 step process :)
- Paul Buchheit
I have it; it works; it formats bloody awfully.
- Mark H
time to add PubSubHubbub output to FriendFeed?
- Kevin Marks
They should just add a SUP bridge to the default hub -- sup is much easier to implement for many types of sites.
- Paul Buchheit
The polling for the connected sites is too long. All that's going to happen is a barrage of FF posts will arrive, then a tidal wave of tweets, etc. All interspersed with a difficult-to-follow and organise stream of real-time(ish) posts and comments. Messy, confusing; the bastard child of FriendFeed and Wave.
- Mark H
I still cannot see #buzz in my Gmail. More time needed
- Xitong Liu
I thought Buzz team said it already supports PubSubHubbub today?
- Susan Beebe
I'm betting I'll have that option as I already have FriendFeed linked on my Google Profile... but darn if they won't turn on my Buzz in Gmail!
- Nathan Chase
@nathan I've noticed an option to "turn on/off" buzz in my gmail footer... maybe you have it too.
- Cyril Moutran
ok, sorry for my ignorance... but buzz? this is the first time I hear of it :(
- Claudia Petrilli
Claudia, for more info, see http://buzz.google.com. It's being turned on in gmail accounts bit by bit, and maybe it's already on in your account :)
- Adam Lasnik
guess what, it was already in my account. Sweet!!!! :)
- Claudia Petrilli
ok, my connected sites thingy doesn't give me the FriendFeed option either....
- Claudia Petrilli
If nothing else, you should be able to import the FriendFeed RSS for the time being, right?
- Nathan Snyder
Do you have your Friendfeed connected to your Google profile
- Braden Douglass
Now that I have Buzz, FriendFeed isn't an option for connected sites, even though it's on my Google Profile. Anyone know how to rectify that?
- Mark Trapp
I have the FriendFeed option but it looked like it was already pulling in my FF feed as it was one of my sites on my Google Profile.
- Kol Tregaskes
For anyone having the same issue as me, I was able to get FriendFeed to show up as a connected site by removing it from any other Google Profile (I had an older profile with FriendFeed on it), adding your Google Reader shares to your FriendFeed services, and refreshing the social graph using Brad Fitzpatrick's recrawl tool: http://www.google.com/buzz...
- Mark Trapp
I didn't wanted to have my FriendFeed activity pulled to Buzz, but have my Buzz (public) activity to be in FriendFeed (private) that is pushed all the way to Facebook (private). Some publish it all the way to Twitter (http://bit.ly/9qSVtY). I've updated that feed to correct Media URL for FriendFeed to understand properly. Provide your Google username and get the RSS, it can be used in FriendFeed profile: http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes...
- Myroslav Opyr
I think you get the Friendfeed option if it's listed on your Google Profile
- Sharon Hurley Hall
Don't really understand the problem.
- Dayton Wilks
It stinks. When I lived in NC, some idiot broke into my new car 3 months after I purchased it. Broke the lock etc., but they couldn't steal the car even though they tried. 3 days later they tried again, but even though the lock was busted already the jack a**s broke the window to get in. Again, they couldn't steal the car even though they had enough time to burn cigarettes into my dash. We moved within the month.
- RAPatton
The person was obviously looking for coins. We don't leave any there. :(
- AJ Batac :)
it's happened to me a couple of times - different cities. It's a horrible feeling so I totally understand. in my case, the broke the lock and the steering column cover to try and steal the truck. they didn't steal it but messed it up pretty good.
- Paulette
Sorry to hear that. Happened to us in a decent suburb a few months ago...it sucks.
- Bubba Botts
around '89 someone shot out my back window and stole my shitty stereo. i've been locking my car up inside a garage ever since.
- Joe The Sausage
B*st*rds.... karma will get 'em in the end...
- Andrew Terry
Sucky, I'm so sorry. One of the times our car was broken into they threw my husbands dress whites (Navy) into the street where they got trashed. The stereo and other things that were stolen were no big deal..replacing that uniform at the last minute when we couldn't afford it, scrambling to get it ready (wash, press, patches sewn on etc..) in one day so he could go out to sea for 4 months was pretty awful. We had been in Fla. for about 72 hours..........nice welcome.
- suzanne
:( Sorry to hear that. We've been through it and the sense of violation takes a while to fade. Hopefully they got some prints and can find the jerk(s).
- adf
adf, cops never came. I am officially a statistic.
- AJ Batac :)
I had all those same feelings when my car was broken into. I'm sorry you're going through it and I hope the creep(s) that did it gets a very painful boil in a very sensitive place.
- vicster
Ugh, that is unbelievable and makes it that much worse! Sorry :(
- adf
That sucks. I feel your pain. I've had my car broken into 3 times - all in New Orleans. The first two times, they took out the back triangle window; the last - the passenger side window. There was nothing in the car to steal, though, so they didn't get anything. Just left a mess.
- Cassandra
"The history of the visual design of user interfaces can be described as a gradual change towards more realism. As computers have become faster, designers have added increasingly realistic details such as color, 3D effects, shadows, translucency, and even simple physics. Some of these changes have helped usability. Shadows behind windows help us see which window is active. The physicality of the iPhone’s user interface makes the device more natural to use."
- AJ Batac :)
from Bookmarklet
short, interesting and applicable. thanks for sharing
- Alan Le
We were talking about this a few months ago. Especially in how games or websites can get a thumbs down quickly because of lack of "realism".
- Anika
@Anika - WRT games, McCloud's bit on 'masking' might be applicable. (It's in Understanding Comics, talking about how comics like Cerebus or certain manga have very cartoony characters but realistic worlds and objects.)
- Andrew C (✓)
+1 Alex - agreed! The nifty is my fave lens
- Andrew Terry
Until I can afford an L lens (and that's taking backseat to the 5d Mk II which I should be getting in a couple of months' time) my three faves would be my only three: nifty fifty, Tokina 12-24, and a 70-300. Covers the range nicely.

Backspace doesn't work for me. I just use the links on the bar above to get back to folders. OT: I also wish there was a friggin' refresh button. Why do I have to go back, then forward again to get a refreshed folder?
- Anika
I miss the explorer of old, you know the one that actually let you browse your folders and network.. the one that didn't get in the way and try to hide your shit in folders you didn't want them in. When I open up explorer I don't want to be in my documents, I want to be in my computer so I can see my drives!
- alphaxion
at first I really missed it but now I am getting used to it. but I still vote yes I miss it.
- John Ford
Definitely don't miss it, but then again I've been using Vista since day 1 of its release, so I'm used to it by now. But I can't recall missing it back then either.
- Hookuh Tinypants
@Anika: you can always right-click and select Refresh from the menu. Granted it's not as nice as having that button there to click, but it's easier than doing the backward-forward dance. :)
- Hookuh Tinypants
Isn't it missing in Vista too? EDIT: after reading all comments, yes folks, this isn't a new thing!
- Ryan
See people...this is what you get when you crap on Vista... :P You woulda been acclimated by now...
- Hookuh Tinypants
I'm a keyboard guru (and on Vista) so I don't miss it for me, but do when trying to help my mouse-only relatives & friends.

Don't really miss it. The Breadcrumbs are good enough.

- Loren Heiny
Update on the Twitter results: YES: 19, NO: 15
- Sarah Perez
@Ryan: No one said it's a new thing, but the fact that it went missing in Vista is what led some people to believe that it would "return" in Windows 7
- Sarah Perez

Almost a year later and I'm still not used to it. I switch from XP on my netbook to Win7 on my husband's computer and find myself still annoyed. I've been working around it by just exploding my folder view.
- Anika
Mine is 10989, but I used to do a lot of my searches at work and not logged into Google, so my total could easily be double or more that number.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Mine's an order of magnitude lower than yours, Kevin. Which is a little weird since I feel like I'm using google all the time. I even use it when I KNOW the url I'm looking for cause typing the search term is faster than the domain.
- Cyrus Lendvay
lol @ this not working in chrome because I don't have the toolbar
- Richard Lawler
Richard, it works for me in Chrome and no toolbar here either. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
It told me i need to install the toolbar for it to work when I clicked on it.
- Richard Lawler
Richard, said the same thing for me but I found the stat without it. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
weird, i guess it hasn't been tracking me because I only show 1 that I did just now.
- Richard Lawler
My current commute is 2 hours from door to door and that's some walking and 2 trains. I done 3.5hours each way for several months a few years ago (that was awful!) and y shortest, well, I worked from home for 9 months. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Wow, 2 hours?!!?! My commute is about an hour, depending on traffic, which happens to be my longest and shortest. Whenever I decide to move, I'll definitely try to shorten that.
- Cass
My current commute is 0 minutes - by foot (work at home) and my longest was 2 hrs by car because I picked up my best friend and we carpooled to work.
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
My current commute is about 1 hour and 20 minutes one way. Hoping that will improve in the next year or so.
- adf
16 minutes, maybe less. I treavel in my car. Longest was about 45 minutes when I was farmed out to Food Lion and the shortest was a walk
- RAPatton
from iPhone
I live 9 miles away from the library. I'd say my commute is about ten minutes each way. The longest commute I had was when I lived in Queens and worked in Stony Brook. I literally drove almost the entire length of Long Island. It was about 55 miles each way. It would take anywhere from 45-90 minutes each way, each day.
- Mary Carmen
22 miles = best time 22 minutes. worst time 97 minutes
- Morgan
My current commute takes me about an hour door to door. that's walking to the bus stop. taking the bus to the train, training it downtown and walking to work from the stop. if I take the car, it's about 30 minutes if I catch all the right lights. I used to have a 5 minute drive.
- Nathalie
Current commute is about 20km, which takes anywhere from 25 minutes and up depending on weather and traffic. Shortest commute was a 5 minute walk. Oh and I drive my current commute as it is half-way across the city.
- Kenton
Longest commute I ever had wasn't the longest because of distance. I was relying on public transportation one day a week (the rest of the days I caught a ride with my boss, who lived on my block). On Sundays, I had to be at work by 7am. The bus stop was about 12 blocks from my house. I had to get up at 4am in order to catch the very first bus of the day, then change buses twice, in...
- April
I drive. 40 minutes coming back, but I drop my missus into work some mornings when she can't get a lift and she works in the opposite direction so that takes about 1 hour 15 mins.
- Mark H
Currently work at home, so about 2 minutes from bed to fridge for orange juice to desk. I've been mostly lucky with commuting. In London, I had one job with a short overground train journey and a short walk (maybe 40 minutes total) and three jobs where I walked to work, 30 minutes or less. My previous job here in Austin was consulting role, out at various client sites each day, none more than 30-45 minutes away.
- Patrick Jordan
20-30 min currently. Next week it'll change to about 60 minutes :S But at least I'll be basically working for myself... ;)
- Jemm
Typically 20-25 min. and up to +45 min. on a bad day. Travel via small SUV...
- JA Castillo
I drive about 50 mins (45 miles) to my current main job in Louisville. My shortest commute would have to be with I worked for Northroup Grumman, that was about 30 mins usually (20 miles). And I drive my car which is a 99 Ford Taurus that gets an average of 27 MPG.
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
Typically 1.5 hours each way involving two trains and a short walk at either end. Last weeks travel chaos made it 3 hours each way.... *shudder*
- Roberto Bonini
25 minutes one way for 13 miles by car. The longest it's ever been is 50 minutes. On previous gigs I could go an hour one way daily and it sucked.
- Michelle
These days 20mins to work, 20mins home by subway. Long ago, about 4mins to work (walking), and then I'd stop in at the supermarket on the way home (10 mins?). Longest: 1 1/2 - 2 hrs to get to work and usually 2 hrs to get home. It was misery, but I didn't keep that job for long.
- Paul W. Homer
i drive about 5 minutes in to work. 10 if there's traffic. at some point i'd like to be able to make trip on bike, but there's no really good way to get across the river safely. longest commute i had was about 30-40 minutes (up to an hour with traffic) when I was living in the detroit suburbs
- Imabug
I just worked out my 2 hour journey is only 26 miles.
- Kol Tregaskes
3 miles - sometimes I walk it - well not too often - usually I need my car :->)
- Steve Cleary
30 minutes in the bay area. Thankfully, I have a reverse commute so there's little traffic. Only down side is I need to pay $4 toll every day.
- Alan Le
My current commute is about 5 min. Bed -> Bathroom -> Make coffee -> Backyard. My longest commute was when I lived 6 miles from my job. It took almost 30 - 50 minutes to get there.
- Anika
So I think that makes me the longest commuter here so far. 2 hours is too long!
- Kol Tregaskes
10 minutes for 4 miles. It's the shortest commute I've had. Longest was 45 minutes each way in the Bay Area, which is one reason why I moved from the Bay Area.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
My commute is between 60 and 90 minutes each way (depending on traffic), and I travel by carpool. My longest commute ever was 3 hours each way. I only did that for three months, but holy shit it was the worst three months of my entire life. Shortest commute is when I work from home. :)
- Hookuh Tinypants
I have to walk down the stairs! Until today I walked about 2mi to work though, it was lovely.
- Lo the Baker
Mine is 2 hours each way. Drive, - 170miles.
- Alan (Giraffes)
One of my other commutes, I had erased from memory. When I was in college, I lived about 15 min. from my job, but had to take the bus. My job was about 9 mile NE of me. If I had to work weekends, then I had to take 4 buses; one of which went 7 miles west. That commute was almost 2 hours long. *That* was the reason I decided there was no job worth a commute longer than 30 min. and I promised myself I'd never take a job where it took longer than an hour unless the job was awesome.
- Anika
My new office is 12 miles away - 40 minutes by car, most of it through downtown. The old one was 4 miles away and it still took 20 minutes because it was all city driving. Nothing but stop signs, stoplights and school crossings the whole way.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I sholud little think. I can't remember
- ★ Soner Gönül
Shortest commute: upstairs! work at home. Longest commute: UCLA - drove from Ventura to Westwood everyday - eeks!
- Susan Beebe
1.5 hours to work, 40 mins back, I-65 to 264 to Shelbyville Rd then to N Hourstbourne Pkwy then Ormsby Park Pl, it's dependent on the time of day.
- T-Bone Tsali, FF Cherokee
15 minutes, by car. Longest was 1.5 hours each way. Shortest is now.
- Shevonne
My current commute is about 40 minutes. Since I live in the boonies and my office isn't really near any mass transit hubs, I drive back and forth to work. My longest commute was 87 miles each way and took about 2-2.5 hours each way, depending on traffic. Technically, my shortest commute was probably when I was a resident advisor in college, and I simply had to walk downstairs from my room to the office. Other than that, my shortest commute was about 10 minutes driving.
- Curdy G
Current commute: 15-25 minutes in light traffic, give or take depending on lights. The longest I had: 2 hours each way, from Frederick to DC (I took the train, but on most days, driving or busing took the same amount of time). My shortest commute was 10-15 minutes when I loved only a mile away from work (that mile consisted entirely of freeway, so I still had to drive).
- Jennifer Dittrich
I'm jealous of all your commutes atm.
- Kol Tregaskes
Mine would be the likes of my all-time fave Bug Blaster on the Acorn Electron, Lotus Espirit Turbo Challenge on the Amiga. Slightly newer ones would include Total Annihilation on the PC (mainly multiplayer) and very recent games include Borderlands, Pure and Need for Speed: Shift.
- Kol Tregaskes
All time winner for time-sucking was Ultima II/III/IV/V on my Apple //e. More recently, two weeks of my life disappeared playing Fallout 3 when I borrowed a friend's XBox360. Age of empires I/II/III sucked away a lot of time too.

PC: WarCraft 1-2, Starcraft, C&C series, Tomb Raider 2, Sims 1-2, Gunbound, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, Age of Empires 1-2, Star Wars Battleground, Wolfenstein, Doom 1-2, Prince of Persia 1-2, Civilizations 1-2, Colonizations, Counter Strike, Championship Manager ... too many to mention
- LouCypher
SimCity 2000, Doom (I & II), Free Cell, Pokemon (various flavors), Final Fantasy (VII - X2), Dragon Age: Origins, Disgaea, Okage Shadow King
- Jennifer Dittrich
PS: Metal Gear series, Resident Evil series, Tomb Raider 3, Winning Eleven series, Final Fantasy VIII
- LouCypher
showing my age with the first few but, Pacman, Missile Command, Q*bert, Star Wars (the old arcade version, with the wire-frame graphics), Tetris, Star Wars Galaxies, Bejeweled, Fable, Fable II, Sim City, Quake, Oblivion, Guitar Hero 3
- Andrew Terry
I've lost track of how time I spent playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Utima Online, but I bought Dragon's Age today, and it's already looking like a major time sink. I spent a lot of time and money playing Asteroids when it first came out. I also played, Quake 2, and Unreal Tournament a lot.
- Michael Fidler
Definitely my three longest - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Oblivion, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
- Jandy
Roller coaster Tycoon (PC), Age Of Empires(PC), Burn out3: Take Down (PS 2) , Grand Theft Auto San Andres(PS 2), Gran Tourismo 3 and 4 (PS 2), Many Others
- Brent - Yes I am
Monster Bash, Crystal Caves, Wacky Wheels, Breakthru, Duke Nukem, Magic Vines, The Call of Atlantis, Rainforest Cascade.. some of them :)
- Citronella
I hadn't played PS2 GTA San Andres till this question was asked. I have no self control. It had been 4 years since a game had been saved. I'm blaming Kol.
- Brent - Yes I am
Sorry, Brent, hehe. I think I played more Quake 3 than the rest. I played tons of Duke Nukem though.
- Kol Tregaskes
Damn i've no time for other games while i'm playing wow :))
- Fikret
Space War (coin-op), Gridrunner (VIC-20), Gorf (coin-op), Galaxian (coin-op), Asteroids (coin-op), Asteroids Deluxe (coin-op), Civilization, Star Control II, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Doom II, Quake, Quake II, Half Life, Treadmarks... that's about when i stopped playing games alot. :P
- Joe The Sausage
oops, forgot the old DOS version of SimCity.
- Joe The Sausage
Super Mario World!! Tetris, and StarFox for N64. Gave up on vidya games as an adult, though.
- Jenthemum
Most definitely SimCity - but Tetris too I guess. I did skip college for two weeks to play Age of Empires - so in terms of true brutality to productivity, I guess AoE is the prime - I had all the time in the world when I played Tetris + SimCity - though SimCity 4 also burned through many of my adult real life so I don't know.. :)
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Oh yes and Roller coaster Tycoon 1-3. Gosh that game is good!
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Splitting hairs on time probably, but here goes: Doom 1 and 2 single player, Descent, Tie Fighter, Dark Forces, System Shock, the original Quake test and Quake (LAN deathmatch), Duke Nukem 3D single player, Quake 2, Gran Turismo 2, Shogo, Quake 3 Arena, Counterstrike, Sin, Deus Ex, Half Life 1 and 2, Star Wars Galaxies, Bioshock, Fallout 3, and Borderlands. Sorry can't really point to just a couple. I feel like I should include Portal, but I finished that pretty quick. ;D
- Adrian
damn, i totally forgot Duke 3D, X-Wing, TiE Fighter, X-Wing vs TiE Fighter and Descent! i have a Shogo disc but no serial to go with it. :(
- Joe The Sausage
Oh yeah and how could I forget Zork II and Planetfall (on the old Atari 800XL) and the mighty MECHWARRIOR 2!
- Adrian
Tie Fighter and Descent were sooo awesome! It was a reason to own a fancy joystick! And SHOGO! Hell yeah. Let me look around Joe...
- Adrian
I can't believe that I forgot to mention, Soul Caliber (the original) for the Dreamcast. I would play it until my fingers hurt. Awesome game/
- Michael Fidler
In the the last decade, in approximated order of most hours played: Guild Wars, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Raven Shield, Ultima Online, Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind, Tom Clancy's Ghost RECON (original). The only all-time to come close to those were: Mechwarrior II: Mercenaries, Warlords III, Baldur's Gate series, Dark Sun Online, Bard's Tale series, Loderunner (original C-64), and Telengard.
- Michael W. May
Oh yeah, Pitfall! Those sound effects are embedded in my brain.
- Adrian
In the quarter arcade, Joust... always Joust.
- Michael W. May
Oh! Wing Commander series! and the SSI AD&D Pools of Radiance series. Many hours on those two series...
- Michael W. May
LOL, Wing Commander III... I spent probably more hours trying to tweak the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat on my 486 to try to get it to play the damn game than actually playing! It worked in the end.
- Adrian
Warcraft: Orcs vs. Humans, Master of Magic, Sid Meyer's Pirates!
- Michael W. May
Joe, games have come a long way from their humble beginnings, but platforms like the IPhone have reminded us that great graphics and AI are nice to have, but simple addictive game play is enough to keep the most jaded gamers attention for hours on end. The game that I play the most right now is, Eliminate Pro on the iPhone.
- Michael Fidler
That's funny. Do you remember the name of the handheld football device that used a short dash on the screen to represent the players? Nice graphics:D
- Michael Fidler
I have the basketball one. Someone gave it to me as a "retro" birthday present a few years ago. It was my first time playing it. I think I had the football one back in the day...
- Adrian
You're right Adrian. The first one was called the football 1 and it was made by Mattel. They came out in 1979! BTW, disco sucks,
- Michael Fidler
Star Wars Galaxies. I totally lost all contact with the outside world there. Followed closely by City of Heroes and World of Warcraft. I really should play those kinds of games without someone setting parental controls on them... Some are on drugs I am on Coke Cola and MMOs. Before I got hooked on MMOs it was probably UFO Enemy Unknown (X-Com ufo defense for you americans) Both the old...
- Rasmus Lauridsen
*SHOCK @Michael* DISCO. DOES. NOT. SUCK! Duuuude... if it wasn't for Disco I wouldn't be the man I am today. #longstory#backtogamesnow :D
- Adrian
After my daughter was born, I was totally hooked on SWG! She would wake up a lot at night, and I'd stay up and play SWG and basically wait for her to wake up rather than going to sleep to get woken up, which wouldn't work because once I'm out, I'm out. That game was so cool. Eventually they made these wacky changes to the character classes and I just lost interest. Is there anything even close to that now or coming out soon?
- Adrian
There's a MMORPG for Star Trek coming out this quarter.
- Michael Fidler
Jet Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future are the only games I've ever gotten 100% on.
- Andrew C (✓)
Oh totally forgotten - HomeWorld!!! And wow HW is now on Linux. Too crazy. I absolutely love that game. In fact, I pretty much stopped playing games altogether after playing HW + HW2 - the UI, art direction and soundtrack is so well done that any subsequent games that I purchased seem boring and uninnovative - and subsequently from that day on I went from buying 50 games per year to nothing at all... :)

It never died, it was just hibernating for the winter.
- Tyson Key
For real, feeds are getting buzzier this week, I enjoy it a lot more following the return of those neuro-social web emotional links.
- Zu from AOD
It started dying as soon as I signed on.
- aldenoneil
It only "died" because some people left for no reason. Now they are either back or we have new users so it's returning to it's old self. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
For me, going to Facebook was a huge turnoff - and I fully expected them to do something evil with it. Since it seems that they are going to leave it alone for the time-being, I was happy to come back :-)
- Jeffrey Canton
I've noticed that over the past 14 or so days, actually. Good news :)
- LANjackal
I am new - I am here now - you're welcome.
- Paulette
oh and I love Jim Iz Not on UR list. the name I meant! :-D
- Paulette
Thanks heaps as well to all those who continue sharing articles et al despite likes or comments, they do for sure add to good FFing

Bwana hasn't posted anything for months but yes his account is still here.
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol, a FriendFeed iPhone app inspired by Tweetie (hence the cutesy name).
- Akiva
Perhaps going back to heavy FFing will alleviate my depression. However, it'll certainly make getting anything done _harder_ than before. ;)
- Chris Charabaruk
Akiva, ah OK. I wish we had a good app on Nokia's.
- Kol Tregaskes
oooh look at how young and cute Paul is! :) very cool that you saved this! What was your job title then (intern for ______)? What location did you work at? Does that # mean you were the 39,325 employee hired by M$?
- Susan Beebe
I worked on Win NT, debugging OLE. It was pretty bad because the NT OLE code was fine; all the bugs were in 16-bit OLE apps. There are few things worse than debugging interactions between two 16-bit apps you don't have the source to!
- Gabe
Wow, 16 bit OLE. Why didn't you force everyone to use 32bit Word and Excel? It would've been very Apple of you.
- Eric
Yup, Redmond. I think I worked in building 4, which may not exist anymore, and lived across the street at "Timberlawn". I worked on the installer for "Plus Pack for Windows 95".
- Paul Buchheit
Eric, it gets worse: one of the first apps I had to look at was Ichitaro, Japan's #1 word processor at the time. It sure would have made things easier if I could have forced everybody to only use 32-bit English apps!
- Gabe
I wonder if it was some kind of foresight to hang on to your old Microsoft badges, but not your diplomas.
- Clare Dibble
Nice, a blue badge. I consult for Microsoft and have an Orange badge.
- Alan Le
Wow! I was there that same summer interning for "Office Team Manager" I must have started a week or 2 before you as my employee number was 39207.
- Joe Beda
I think I returned my badge, so I can't remember what my employee number was. I worked on porting the standard ms installer from windows to the mac.
- Private Sanjeev
Sanjeev - a worthy cause for sure! :P
- Susan Beebe
It was a piece of code that Ben Slivka wrote to produce cab files :)
- Private Sanjeev
7D is really really nice. But yeah price is an issue. I'm thinking 50D with nice prime lens for taking portraits.
- Alan Le
Then how about the 5D? They're rather cheap these days and still a fantastic cam.
- ronin
following up. I bought the 7D after getting the okay from the wife. Now I need a good walkaround lens. getting the 50mm f1.8 prime for portraits on the cheap.
- Alan Le
That's because everyone ran to Greader which has a long way to go before it can live up to FF. Conversations on there are way too hard. Worse than Twitter.
- Kimber Scott
If I ran the world...this would get you a 6 month prison sentence.....
- Stephanie Segel
Our local SCCA chapter has several loaner helmets painted that color. Thefts went down dramatically compared to when they were just black.
- dthree
I'm not so sure. I once saw an old VW bug with a "Girl Power" bumper sticker being driven around by some skin head looking dudes.
- Kevykev
This pic gets worse upon each viewing, hehe.
- Kol Tregaskes
Except that for a thief to steal this, they would have it stripped back and turned into a real Ferrari in around 30 minutes flat (including travel time) so I don't think it would be that much of a deterrent. ;)

The Great Google Wave invite thread. Anyone who wants an invite post your Gmail address here and anyone who has invites available please use to invite the people on this list. There are also a bunch of requests in the Invites group here: http://friendfeed.com/invites
I have a few but holding them for a few people who have already asked me. I'm at kolint [at] googlewave [dot] com btw. A pain I know but if you can, could you update your comment when you have an account or just delete your comment. Ta! :-) EDIT: Try this site for invites: http://googlewaveinvites.com/
- Kol Tregaskes
Are people on this list getting invites or at least been told they have an invite on the way? You might have to be patient, it could take a long time for one to come through.
- Kol Tregaskes
Adam, yep agree. Maybe because I did that (month ago though) helped me get mine through from Vijay so quickly!
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol, the invitation process seems to be based on nominations. For example, everytime someone nominates/invites you, you get bumped up the queue for an account until you're at the top and you get sent an invite by the team
- Ema Nymton
Ysabel, ah I see, So lots of people must have nominated me. Darn, so a few users I have nominated could be waiting a looooong time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
if that voting system is right I'm very annoyed. I asked for an invite months ago, now all the numpties are all over it I'm not going to get a look in. It's like I've been sat at the front of a shop queue and everyone's just walking right past me into the shop. I am British but I detest both queuing and waiting, so this is pretty tough going
- Toby Graham
Like most other people, yesterday I wasn't aware of that I «needed» a Google Wave invitation this badly...but now I am!!! quackofdawn at gmail dot com

neternity@gmail.com and i promise to send a wave of 100,901 twitter followers to your doorstep each of whom will have averaged 1 tweet in their existence - this might not get me an invite but surely it will get some notice - must have that something special - my google wave invite special sauce ingredient is twitter juice PS Not to be construed as an offer, not valid in any of the 53 US states, do not try this at home, caution: contents are hot.

How does anyone know if someone has already been invited? You could go back and edit your comment when you receive an invitation, but since that takes days, it could be ages before you know.

I've not even had a nomination, RK. At google dot com I'm suezanne , in the event anyone wants to make a nomination. I've asked before on friendfeed. It's kind of humiliating to beg.

FriendFeed is still the best place to 1) Aggregate all content from around the Web and 2) See others activity around the Web. Also, if you assume Facebook wins, piping content through here fills out your Facebook profile. So of course I'm still here.
- Louis Gray
There you go, Allen. Straight from (one of) the horse's mouth. :) Louis is still here, still active and even interacting with you.
- Curdy G
yep - i just saw a pic of his kid in a tshirt :)
- Allen Stern
hate facebook, and scoble's prediction that facebook would be the next big thing! you just can't help those folks that just get there for the girl-boy thing...or for their friends and family, there is a lot of people doing it there and a great section of that isn't of any help when it comes to questions and tech stuff, it might be a big thing but compared to friendfeed it is...
- ffcode
You know it would be cool if everyone left FriendFeed because then Louis and I would have the edge against everyone else that left it in the dust. It's still an awesome tool guys!
- Jesse Stay
Allen, I just hope that everybody stops blogging so I am the only one doing it. If you naysayers all stop FriendFeeding, that's fine too. Go have fun on your Twitter. :)
- Louis Gray
I noticed a decline, but it really seems to be picking up lately, especially in the last week.
- RAPatton
i thought we were all going to posterous? i booked a big coach bus to take us all over there! rubel is driving! :-P
- Allen Stern
hahahaha "go have fun on your twitter" there isn't anything like friendfeed, no not even posterous...
- ffcode
I haven't noticed any big declines since the week or two after the Facebook announcements. Most of the people I interact with are still here... and I've subbed to new people... I don't know what that article is talking about. Seems like the article is a self fulfilling prophecy: let's say that everyone is leaving FriendFeed so that everyone will leave FriendFeed. Actually, it almost...
- Lindsay
kind of, though I've noticed most have changed exactly how they use it before and after the big sell, for example there are fewer imports of the particular services and more of personal blog RSS's, which I'm sure is due to who own the content issue
- The Real sofarsoShawn
ffcode, Paul Bucheit posted something just yesterday, as did Benjamin Golub. They're still using the site.
- Jesse Stay
moved on as in moved on to another projects are they still working on ff?
- ffcode
jesse, but their activity has seen a drop, bret isn't doing much
- ffcode
I've personally noticed a large drop among the usual people I subscribed to. My main feed was so dead I even had to ask if the real-time feature broke down.
- The Real sofarsoShawn
ffcode, they're working on the facebook code now... figuring out how to move forward while integrating the friendfeed features (iirc)
- Chris Heath
Great... Just when I was getting used to FriendFeed... So what's the new fad service? Outside of Google Wave and the still going strong Twitter/Facebook news, I haven't heard of anything new coming out lately. Maybe it's just me but I'm itching for more revolutionary free stuff. Posterous FTW though. :p
- Fake Name
ffcode, they released Tornado server recently. I think that was a pretty significant activity
- Jesse Stay
Fake Name, don't go anywhere... Long Live FriendFeed
- Chris Heath
For the record, Allen, Cal didn't lose this weekend because they had a bye week. :)
- Louis Gray
i'm of the opinion that FriendFeed (the service) is of more value -- to me-- than FriendFeed (the community) and if the community goes off and disipates it will be a loss, but the service is still worth a lot to me
- Chris Heath
I stopped pruning my FF feed to promote interaction and don't bother sharing with FF as much. I just post links through twitter now and upped my usage for facebook. I also stopped updating the rooms I started.
- Alan Le
FF is still my favourite, although I'm quite. But that's due to other activities.
- Ton Zijp
this is control, and you all who registered on ff need to be here ASAP...and we need to rebuild the conversations ETA a day at most...
- ffcode
Fake Name, what scrutiny are you holding my feed up to? Not sure what you mean.
- Chris Heath
@Chris Heath, it was just a fancy way of saying I've subscribed to your feed.
- Fake Name
btw oward, why is Jaiku better than Twitter? You didn't exactly clarify. Personally though...yeah, end of the day I either want a better RSS or a better RSS segmenter than anything else. FriendFeed is nice but it's still more of a lifestream than a Yahoo Pipes' Dream.
- Fake Name
Fake Name, well that makes sense... i kind of thought you might have been putting me down in a sarcastic manner, but that makes sense too
- Chris Heath
Haven't found anything to replace it with just yet, so yeah, I'm still here.
- Steven Perez
To be honest, I have stopped listening to a lot of social media 'experts'. FriendFeed has always been about social interaction for me... After 1,000,345 stories on Twitter vs Facebook, it's getting old. Interaction may be down... but it may be the content, not the service.
- Johnny
Good thread, my comment on the post here: http://alexschleber.posterous.com/my-comm... If FF goes away entirely, it would be a huge loss of the (Twitter) archiving capabilities. I still don't get why FF didn't go the full-on Twitter client route, they could have pwned TweetDeck with better groups, MUCH better persistence, etc. They could have ridden the Twitter hype wave all the way. Of course to make that happen, they would have had to optimize the Twitter use cases.
- Alex Schleber
I like FF for everything it does that Twitter DOESN'T. I'm very glad they didn't just make it another lame Twitter client. How many of those do we really need?
- Lindsay
FB could easily inject thousands or millions of new users. The fact that they don't, and probably won't, sucks. I think ff was bought because it was seen as a threat, and now I fear it is being left to die. sigh.
- Garin Kilpatrick
I think the 50 mio is a transfer payment to FF guys... They dont need anything and I dont think that they seen ff as a thread.
- Atif UNALDI
pity, i was just starting to enjoy using friendfeed even though no body ever replied to any of my comments lol
- Loc
@bluecockatoo / Lindsay, I wasn't saying that FF should ONLY be another Twitter client, rather the best, on top of also being the best for other services and FF discussion (different use cases). BTW, you may have noticed that FF was always at least 50% Twitter content. Why deny/fight reality, especially if that reality could have greatly bolstered FF instead of seeing it flounder and then having to sell out to Zuckerberg for the coding talent (AKA liquidation).
- Alex Schleber
I've actually been spending more time here lately, still subscribing to interesting feeds - but also started looking for decent replacement. Expecting may be some time before I find one - no hurry ....
- Dan Freeman
Garin, i suspect ff guys had facebook in mind when they were designing it...
- ffcode
"While comparing Posterous to Friendfeed is like comparing a bagel to a piece of fish, ..." lol. But.. can't argue with the OP; it's a shame..
- thinkQuick
I still open up FF and leave it running all day long.
- Chris Jackson
Yup, still using it. At the Mac FriendFeed still rules over Twitter. Slightly different story on the iPhone where Twitter is served by several superb third party clients, in particular Twittelator Pro, which drag me to the platform. On the Mac though it's a no contest. I'm staying in the hope that FriendFeed will see further updates. If this doesn't happen and if it rots on the vine then I'll consider other services. For now though FriendFeed seems the best there is out there.
- JSLeFanu
have we passed 100 comments yet so Scobelizer will take note
- Chris Heath
I still use FriendFeed, although I haven't been as active as I would have liked, as of late. :(
- Tyson Key
I didn't want to respond to this yesterday but I think it's really sad that blogs\news try to put things into the Deadpool before they actually happen. Throughout my career I've seen this, X is dead and in many cases they still exist. Why does media (including blogs) feel it is there role to speed up or create a death? My view is that if they are still talking about it, it's normally still doing OK.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I especially liked how she called us idiots as we had it wrong this whollllle damn time. Oh yes, because she's in the superior position to make such a crude judgment call. Dumb fug.
- The Real sofarsoShawn
Shawn, who's she? and where did she say this? now i'm interested...
- Chris Heath
I do, but I wish there was a way of filtering what the Facebook app posts, e.g. no "@" replies...
- David "Lefty" Schlesinger
from Nambu
I use Friendfeed a lot more than Twitter because there is less noise and spam so it's fine if the numbers are low as long as they keep running it. I do spend most on my time on facebook because that's where my close friends and family are. It would be easier to be here if there was interaction on any of my posts.
- Jason Williams
from iPhone
I find myself using friendfeed even more after the acquisition. I usually start conversations here and auto-post to twitter. I just seem to get more interaction here than twitter. I get a few @replies here and there on twitter but its usually my close friends.
- BRҰANSAҰS
so am i... maybe it's december, not friendfeed? students are back to their studies, business people realize that the quarter ends in september and so on... i've cut my browsing to minimum - no twitter, no facebook, only friendfeed
- Kirill Bolgarov
Off topic: Do your Twitter updates come as fast as usual or are they late? Because mine are unusually late. Google Reader shares too.
- rukku
Thanks... it's *semi* safe, it does include some f-bombs. Wish I could easily shrink it down a bit more. Anyway, it was kinda sad :( I keep hoping things won't go that way... this Exciting Phase has lasted for a solid 6 months so far...
