This is clearly not my cat. If this was my cat he's have one arm shoved down into the printer trying to tear up all the internal whirling bits with his bare claws.
- Soup
Too Funny! Reminds me of the San Mateo Cat Shelter where one of the cats loves to sleep on top of the laster printer where the paper comes out...
- Greg Lato
1600+ to beat the FFundercats live chat thread. I think with this real time now on all threads we're going to see some truly epic comment numbers.
- Simon Wicks
Ivan, no the picture speaks for itself. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Petr, I have no idea what you mean, but thank you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" ..
- Petr Buben
there ya have me ! :] .... see, to be honest with you, i saw this pic couple days ago, but i let it go, without posting it ..... what does that make me? :]
- Petr Buben
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Bloody marvelous, Kol. Wish I could like it again... too cute (and help u to 500 likes).
- Roberto Bonini
I couldn't believe it when I logged on from the morning over posting it and saw it was at something 200 likes! You all have a strange fetish with cats and fax machines, hehe. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Am I the only one who saw this and their first thought was - My goodness did someone break that cats neck? It still freaks me out a little
- Steve C
Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
They fax much better if you flatten them first. What?
- Kevin Pedraja
So we can put this post to rest now. :-) 505 likes final count, wow! :-D Good night all!
- Kol Tregaskes
My like is the last one so far :) - 509 afaik
- getalifejerk
did 3 people really un-like this? now at 506. wtf (edit: uh, oh, yeah, me and 2 + 506 others makes 509. dammit, jim, i'm an artist, not a mathematician)
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
One of the best funny cat pictures I've seen! :-)
- John Collis
Kristian, it appears to be. Hehe, John.
- Kol Tregaskes
- Maryaminaa
It's really only social convention which regards it as inappropriate, same with Xeroxing it, like one does with their b__tocks. Wait are we still talking about cats cats here or...
- sofarsoShawn
OMGosh 700+ likes now!! LOL. Thank you all 702 of you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I love these sorts of creative things!
- Rick Cogley
I always wish they'd show what these things look like from something other than the exactly perfect perspective. Because to most people passing by these would look totally different.
- Brian Johns
These never get old. Thanks for sharing. :)
- Kevin Winn
I did that, but I was heading vertical, school had a vaulted ceiling and I went running, stepped on a chair right were it dropped, on impact both shoes fell off, one hit a guy in the face.
- Jimminy
wonder if that kid had aspirations of being a stunt guy... "dignity, always with dignity" ;)
- alphaxion
If I weren't afraid of going right through the wall, I'd probably still try that. I know I would have done that (and did similar things quite often) when I was much younger.
- Curtiss Grymala
This is still superb this morning after. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Defining the line between brave and stupid?
- Eoghann Irving
If I did that, first the wall would collapse, and then the floor. (So, you see, it's not that I *couldn't*... I just choose not to, for the protection of others.)
- Mark Jepsen
You're right. I don't have the guts...and I'm proud of that.
- Tammy Marshall
Common offroading fix, the sudden flame from the lighter/spray quickly heats the air inside the tire making it expand and reseal itself around the rim, I'ave had to do it a few too many times.
- Tsali, The Native of FF
That is so awesome! I want to try it :)
- Georgia Diehl
I should take in my ][+ and see if they can tell my why it sometimes spontaneously drops out of Basic and back to the assembler prompt.
- LogEx
If anyone has an old Mac in the bay area and is willing to lend it to me I'll see what they say at the Palo Alto Apple store :) I guess I would also need help catching it on film.
- Georgia Diehl
I don't think I have my Mac 128K anymore, though it *might* be in my mom's garage.
- Kevin Fox
Wow, just another reason to go with a Mac :)
- H0llywoodWh0re
Wicked. Love how they actually try to help. I miss the old Mac classics.
- Garin Kilpatrick
There are no words. I think you should wear them out for a day and go to places where you have make transactions – coffee shops, magazine stands, restaurants – and have somebody film the reactions.
- Kevin Pedraja
I wondered what kind of looks I'd get in my neighborhood, but I think most people will just talk about me in Spanish. LOL
- Anika
Gawd, I love these. And, Anika, what's comfort got to do with it? High fashion hurts.
- Anna Haro
You *know* Spanish!! We are so doing this. I wish I had a big, shoulder-mounted broadcast-style video camera though... and then have someone else recording the *camera man* too. What am I saying, I got work to do...
- Adrian
I'm nominating Adrian for a Friendfeed Award this year.
- Micah Wittman
It would be ¿Está usando *chonies* en las manos?
- Anika
Before Anika can say anything, I'll say it... "Micah, don't encourage him!" #predictable
- Adrian
This place needs animated smiley faces, like in Skype and GTalk!
- Adrian
Put some gloves on! You damn kids, always out showin' yer underbusiness to all of creation. Why in my day we had morals, and role models! *blasts some Perry Como at you all*
- Joe Pierce
Next time I say "I soiled my pants" there's now a 30% chance I'll mean that I spilled wine or coffee on my HANDERPANTS!
- Anika
Jorge, elusive like the Yeti, but yes. Come to think of it, I bet it'd be a hit with the Yeti community.
- Micah Wittman
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA!!!!!! Where the thongs at?
- Martha
Cool idea, but of what commercial purpose other than coolness and shock value?
- TrafficBug
What, TrafficBug? You think these are...cool??? The back of the package says they're useful for texting, typing, construction work, cooking...a many other helpful situations.
- Anika
The could open up a Linux bar next door so you can dual boot your Friday nights but the Linux bar would quickly go out of business because those people don't like to pay for things.
- Akiva Moskovitz
from BuddyFeed
Now you can get two different types of viruses from the same bar!
- Louis Gray
But no one makes love like Neil Patrick Harris is dancing? FAIL!
- Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
My brother in law in the Philippines can't be dissuaded from naming his son Elmo. I hope that unborn boy is ready to be tormented for the rest of his life. Why do parents do that to their kids?
- Bradley Farless
You know, in my heart I hope that people like NPH who seem just so damn awesome on the screen are just as cool in real life. Anyone met the fellow in person?
- Adam Lasnik
I'm sure he's a decent guy. Never met him, though.
- Josh Haley
But he sure can dance, just look at him go!
- Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
Love him when he's unicorn watching.
- Gabrielle V
Okay, I swear I am not just pimpin' good swing music, but I was looking at this GIF and listening to this song - http://lala.com/zPe9 ("Billie's Bounce" performed live by Buddy Rich) - and it matches! :o
- Adam Lasnik
Gross. I just unliked to be contrary. Yet another reason why I pulled back from FriendFeed. And why getting swallowed up by Facebook, the great leveler, couldn't make more sense.
- Rick Powell
That's right, all you horrible time-wasters you! Get back to talking about kernels and APIs! Have you no Protestant work-ethic? /sarcasm
- Neal Jansons
I just opened the link and I'm kind of astounded. I had no idea what a deep influence Paul had over at Google. Created GMail? I am in awe. That plus Friendfeed and many other accomplishments. Happy birthday, Paul. I know we get fussy here sometimes about you, but that's only because we love so much what you helped create, and we're terrified at the thought of it vanishing.
- Kamilah Gill
They Photoshopped the *heck* outta this grub (not caterpillar), but I have to admit that the smaller version here had me fooled momentarily.
- Kamilah Gill
Interesting, Brian. Goliath beetle grubs come close, but the grub in this picture is still too large. I think that's more impressive since it's real. I'm stealin' it :] Thanks!
- Kamilah Gill
+ nakachi, that's how I feel about going to the Amazon
- Lo
Ben, by commenting, you insure that the item cannot be hidden. (at least not in My discussions) :)
- Cristo
True, now it's just mostly hidden. It won't show up in any list view (including the home feed). I got this notification via email because I am subscribed to you and I have it set to email me when a friend comments on anything in "My Discussions" but the picture doesn't appear in the email so I'm ok with that :) The only place it will continue to show up is in "My Discussions". But I never visit that feed
- Benjamin Golub
from email
Isn't that what Paul said FriendFeed is right now?
- Jesse Stay
Thank "Brian Johns" for the info. It's the Larvae of Giant Scarab.
- Acharad Sami vanJoulee
This one is too large. I posted the real one.
- Kamilah Gill
from email
Mr. Gunn, I'd rather e-mail. That's my central hub for notifications.
- Jesse Stay
It always has been mine as well, but I'm trying to transition away from that. I think twitter's good for notifications, email's good for direct correspondence with a higher actionable value than a tweet, and RSS for the rest!
- Mr. Gunn
Mr. Gunn, my problem there is that Twitter is based on proprietary technologies. Twitter goes bust, so goes your notifications and other data. With e-mail I will always be able to be contacted, no matter what. E-mail will always be the more reliable method.
- Jesse Stay
Yes, that's certainly true, which is why the more actionable stuff I still have going to email. Things that are valuable to me on twitter are the relationships, and most of those will remain even if twitter goes away.
- Mr. Gunn
But your comment illustrates the importance of federated services vs. centralized ones. That's the value I see in Wave, too.
- Mr. Gunn
Why? What do you do with that information?
- AJ Kohn
how about an RSS feed of a user's lists?
- Mike Chelen
I don't know why this irks me so much, but I can't stand this.
- Jenna Bilotta
guess that's what I get for having a real name as a twitter handle. (@jenna) I don't have this issue with my private account @pinkestblack. :)
- Jenna Bilotta
This happens to me too. (Also using my real name @rebeca.) However, in my case, the offenders are not only teens, but also older Latin American people.
- Rebeca
now the teens think I'm stalking them, cause they don't understand that they ar BROADCASTING PUBLICLY! *tear*
- Jenna Bilotta
though, I also do get the occasional VERY RAUNCHY tweet meant for jenna jameson. (@jenna seems to be a blessing and a curse)
- Jenna Bilotta
Maybe it's Twitter that's broken, shouldn't they just send the msgs to the right 'jenna?'
- Cliff Gerrish
no, they do it all through sms, so there is no real way other than actually understanding how the feature works. If you go look at the three girls in question, they say stuff like "How can she see your tweets if she's not following you" and stuff like that. and now they think I'm stalking them because they don't understand that any @jenna replies essentially come to my "inbox"
- Jenna Bilotta
Covers his eyes -- can't bare to read no mo'
- Jorge Escobar
FriendFeed should be faster again. We were had some network issues which caused a lot of slowness this past week, but I think it's fixed now. Let me know if you are still encountering any extreme slowness.
Mainly just had problems with email posting and the bookmarklet. The rest seemed fairly okay.
- Jason Huebel
I've been told that I'm extremely slow much of the time, but I don't think that's what you meant. Thanks for taking care of the issue, Paul.
- Jim Hearts FF
Meanwhile, Dad's kids with his new wife get what kind of toys?
- Matthew DeVries
Matthew, FriendFeed users have no reason to complain about our toys. And even if we did, bitterness doesn't help.
- Bruce Lewis
FriendFeed is dying for me. In fact. it's just about gone. I use it as a control room and discussion space for my Twitter feed, and a searchable archive. Discussion threads are down about 80 percent. "Likes" are off about 90 percent. There's no real time feed in from Twitter any more. Sad.
- Jay Rosen
Agreed, Jay. My personal life is in a bit of an upheaval right now, which hasn't helped, but the FB acquisition took the wind out of the sails for me. It feels like there's no future, or worse, a future wired up to the "friending" criteria of my Facebook account. I use the services COMPLETELY differently, however. Inbound updates continue, since they're automatic, but this is the first comment I've posted in weeks. Sad, indeed.
- Ken Kennedy
I am using Twitter and FB more and more lately. On the plus side, it's strengthening some real world connections. I'm missing out on the cool new stuff but I think I had gone overboard on that front.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I like FriendFeed, but I happen to find myself using Twitter and IRC more as of late. I guess I've probably just burnt myself and others out, given that I don't seem to have much in the way of compelling content and commentary these days, and that I just don't feel as motivated as I'd like to. :(
- Tyson Key
Thanks for throwing some love over to FF :)
- Susan Beebe
Is there currently an issue with posting from FF to update Facebook -or is Facebook broken after the re-design ? i dont get anything posted to FB anymore which worked fine before yd
- Del_
I just love how some people have joined, completely ignoring the description of the group and showing the type of people they really are. I don't *love* the changes, but I will get used to them and someday soon I will not even remember the old way it was done. Change is good... long live change!
- Travis Koger
Oh it had already happened by the time I got there. I helped them with a redesign of their Page Creator, Site Creator, and file management tools. The glory that is GeoCities design was entirely of its users' making. GeoCities was made of people. The original MySpace.
- Kevin Fox
We were your competitors over at FreeServers. My Uncle founded Freeservers.com :-)
- Jesse Stay
BTW, for some odd reason Freeservers is still up (owned by United Online, owners of NetZero, etc)
- Jesse Stay
We used to talk about creating what would now be called a social network at Freeservers. Not sure what happened to that. I guess it's no surprise we didn't see anything considering they're owned by the owners of Classmates.com :-)
- Jesse Stay
Of course the big thing back then was becoming the next "Portal"
- Jesse Stay
Yeah. It was ironic that when I started at Google they were very wary of becoming the next 'Portal' where portal meant 'walled garden'. In actuality, a portal is a thing that you go through to get from where you are to where you're going, and in that context Google was already more of a portal than any of the other major players, but terms shift...
- Kevin Fox
yeah, funny especially considering iGoogle, etc.
- Jesse Stay
Well, that was way before iGoogle. But even then the idea of a dashboard was more appealing to Google than a walled garden of content.
- Kevin Fox
Rock on, Kevin. Looking forward to your next big thing. twss.
- Josh Haley
XKCD's View Source is classic. Sample: <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="QBASIC">IF $BROWSER = "IE" THEN GOTO 50</SCRIPT>
- Stephen Mack
First, FriendFeed is _not_ going away. (in fact, we're working on switching it to new servers) Second, I know everyone wants to know what the team is working on, but we don't pre-announce things, so for now all I can say is that there's good stuff on the way. Re: http://friendfeed.com/jworthi...
Paul, working on friendfeed.com stuff or facebook.com?
- Kol Tregaskes
I like the first sentence. The rest is just gravy.
- Derek Coward
I'm totally happy if we just reside on decent servers, and get occasional IT help... We'll keep the rest of the ship running :)
- Christopher Galtenberg
Paul - is that why it's been slower lately vs.pre-fb ?
- Allen Stern
Paul please repeat it in re-phrased form: Friendfeed is NOT going to repeat destiny of Jaiku? Y/N
- A.T.
Can't wait... **Fingers tapping desk impatiently**
- AJ Batac
But what does "going away" mean, Paul? And what does "team" mean? And when you say "pre-announce", are you talking about the Palm Pre?
- Ken Sheppardson
Allen, the slowness is due to growth (more users and more data), but I put in a few fixes yesterday that should speed things up a bit.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, sometimes when I open up threads I get the Opps... error. Is that related? It has been happening more and more these last few days.
- Kol Tregaskes
Still better than twitter and facebook. Thanks for the update!
- Mike Nencetti
Paul, thanks for the incredible work with FriendFeed. Please, keep it alive! and most importantly keep it FriendFeed!
- Ciro
as long as FF doesn't go dark or fall to pieces due to lack of maintenance, i think most ppl would be appeased.
- Joe Silence is not dead
Does this mean that the sky is not falling and we should stop running around screaming GODZILLA! and pointing in the direction of FB?
- Moved to Facebook
from fftogo
also, thank you for making such a great service in the first place!
- Joe Silence is not dead
Thanks for the update! Would like to know if there will be actual development done on FriendFeed in the future (other than bug fixes/minor updates) but I understand if you can't really talk about that too much.
- Brandon Titus
Paul: so still no answer from you as to if your 'good stuff' is being developed for FB or FF? The silence suggests it's FaceBook you're working on, or at least transferring FF into an 'add on' for Facebook?
- Jim Connolly
Kol, fb platform and openness, primarily.
- Paul Buchheit
i made a post here - http://www.centernetworks.com/friendf... - one interesting note - maybe FB keeps FF running nice and smooth to keep the early adopters happy as it's a great way to get new features out to them via this channel... just a thought.
- Allen Stern
Wow. I've had to eat my words before but these are the best-tasting ones yet!
- Akiva Moskovitz
from BuddyFeed
Akiva, just add salt. You know which kind :)
- Micah Wittman
These are the best words I could have expected by Paul. There is obviously a cultural difference between the two platforms and audience and I'm assuming both the former FF team and the FB team recognize that and are sensitive to the community. Thank you Paul and I hope you are feeling better....
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Allen, you're in good company on that thought - there were musings on that concept right after the buyout.
- Micah Wittman
Damn, 20+ likes within a matter of 2 minutes.
- Maxamad
I feel a few "I told you so's" coming though... :-)
- Jesse Stay
Thanks Paul. Glad you're working on maintaining/improving performance. I've definitely seen issues here. Looking forward towards your influence and changes over at the blue giant.
- Mark Krynsky
Paul - thank you for letting us know, and I do hope you feel better!
- Jennifer Dittrich
The big question though is will FriendFeed continue to add new features? There's a difference between that and it going away. (and hence my argument w/ Scoble the other day)
- Jesse Stay
Paul: Seriously weird that you're there reading this, and totally ignoring each relevant, yes no question. No one's asking you to pre announce anything - just genuinely concerned (and increasingly so) that they do NOT include developing for FF.
- Jim Connolly
Jesse: Paul answers that question - BOOM - rumour mill dies and we finally get something positive to say. Ya know what - we won;t get an answer though. He's reading this, he knows the answer, but he won't.
- Jim Connolly
Jesse: For now, FF has more features than any other platform for this type of niche. There's some catching up to do before I'm worried about new features.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
AWESOME!! Thanks for helping to quell some concerns Paul. Looking forward to what comes next, but hope that FF never dissappears also.
- Travis Koger
from iPhone
Shouldn't we be asking the facebook guys, and let Paul keep working? Or is he wearing many hats (friendfeed head honcho and facebook openess builder)?
- Mark Essel
from iPhone
Paul: I'm right, right? There's something stopping you from saying that you are no longer adding new features to what 'we' know as Friendfeed?
- Jim Connolly
Not for nothing, but I took my friendfeed embed off my tiny blog for a few weeks after the facebook buy out. There was just this empty spot on my eyesore of a website, so I put the embed back. We care because we like the connections we've made here and don't want to lose them. It's personal for us to.
- Mark Essel
from iPhone
Paul: Amazing how quickly you guys have adopted the Facebook attitude to silence. Pity.
- Jim Connolly
Paul: blink twice if you will add new features to FF. I won't tell anyone, honest.
- Edward Zwart
FWIW he did just upgrade servers. My e-mail notifications are almost real-time. Sounds to me like they're still improving the service.
- Jesse Stay
Jim: Don't blame Paul on that, it's not fair. He's only allowed to say so much at this point but I'm very satisfied on what he said.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Jesse: The questions not if they keep the servers running - we want to know if this is a dead platform.
- Jim Connolly
Jim: in Paul's defense Facebook's PR is more controlling than FriendFeed's was. I'm sure he's having to consider the effects his words will have on other people inside Facebook. But, I'm VERY HAPPY that Paul is here giving us hints as to what's coming. I wish it had happened six weeks ago so we wouldn't have lost so many people, but maybe that would happen anyway.
- Robert Scoble
Jim, there may be a few new things, but as I said, the team is mainly working on fb platform and openness, so it's unlikely that there will be any big new features of ff (except maybe one that I've been thinking about for a while...).
- Paul Buchheit
Did the Walrus think about Feed Splicing? :-)
- Robert Scoble
Paul: Finally - THAT'S what we were wondering.
- Jim Connolly
Cool Dude: Need it to have a classier forum than the parent; Parent is still good but the options here make it just a bit nicer.
- ThatDBD
Paul: Pity. At least we now know not to expect any developments or improvements. Thanks for answering the question. Whilst it confirmed my fears, it's good to know what's happening.
- Jim Connolly
I have no problem with FB integration (notice my drool above). Hoping for good friend conversion tools to bring subscribers over as friends or fans on Facebook from FriendFeed. (Connect.registerUsers FTW!)
- Jesse Stay
As a result - Jim has left the platform.
- Jim Connolly
Jim: this is a change from last week, by the way. My sources were telling me that we weren't going to get any new features and now Paul is refuting that and saying we might get one new feature here.
- Robert Scoble
I'm still drooling - anyone have a towel?
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: I'll buy you a virtual one over on Ning.
- Robert Scoble
personally, i would be happy just to have FF not fall apart and die. given the post-acquisition situation, anything beyond that is gravy!
- Joe Silence is not dead
Robert, I heard Ning is dead - care to send me one on Facebook? ;-)
- Jesse Stay
Robert, think of it as 20% time. If there's a feature I want, I'll just add it :)
- Paul Buchheit
