So, I've never seen Monty Python. Any of them. I'm well versed in films, its just that from what I've seen these have never appealed to me. The problem is everyone I know (including some folks on FriendFeed) seem to think they are hilarious. Are these films really all they're cracked up to be?
Ni! - Alex Scoble
omg. Start with 'Holy Grail' and get back to us in a few days... - Bren -- feeling merry
I think out of context they may be hard to find funny. But envision Different Strokes, and Benny Hill, Dirty Hairy, and Hart to Hart on different channels. Then you get these guys asking "what's the velocity of an African swallow?" "Laden, or unladen?" "Unladen." - anna sauce
In a lot of ways they are everything they're cracked up to be - and sometimes more. While a lot of the jokes, skits and dialog seem very non-sequitor, they're often tied into a bunch of extra references that they take for granted that their audience will either get (or, if they don't, the Python guys didn't really care). My favorite - the abrupt, plot-less end of "Holy Grail" -- just like one of the original Aurthurian poems (the author died). - Jennifer Dittrich
Well, first you should know that Monty Python isn't a movie.. it's a comedy troupe that had British TV show called "Monty Python's Flying Circus" in the early 70s. There are similar, more contemporary troupes like "The Kids in the Hall" and even "Mad TV." You are probably thinking of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" which was their best-known movie. If you really want a concentrated portion of their humor, rent a season of "Flying Circus".. that will get you in the mood for one of their movies. - Phil G
Could be taken on 'oliday! - MVB (Grinch of FF)
If you aren't quite there yet, you can start with more mainstream movies penned by John Cleese.. watch "A Fish Called Wanda" or even "Fierce Creatures". Or, rent a season of "Faulty Towers" -- that is pure Cleese. Once you 'get' Cleese, you will understand about 80% of Monty Python's stuff. - Phil G
yes and no (I personally enjoy them but I haven't memorized them so i can walk around quoting them like passages from A Midsummer Night's Dream) - they are a bit like Wes Anderson movies (which i strongly dislike): some people love 'em, some people hate 'em - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Yes - they are that funny. - Chrimmus Tad
I've found a witch, may I burn him? - Eric P
'tis only a flesh wound. - ronin
I'm resolved, I'll have to check out a season of 'Flying Circus' now. - Aaron Krug
"I've had worse." - Chrimmus Tad
She turned me into a NEWT! - Chrimmus Tad
it's just sketch comedy, done with lots of non sequiter segues and trippy animations. Oh, and there's a high level of comedic genius involved as well, so that doesn't hurt the quality level at all. - Pete Delucchi
well I like some of the scenes on the TV show, but I like the movies more - clarke thomas
Aaron - My nipples explode with delight! (it's an in-joke, you will get it after you watch Flying Circus for a while) - Phil G
So I'm on this road trip with my sis & her husband, and he and I start quoting Monty Python and, honestly, it jsut doesn't stop. It got us through about 3 states. SOO FUNNY (for us, maybe not anyone else) - anna sauce
Yes, they are that funny. Check out Holy Grail first; it's the best of the Python films. - Jeremy Brooks
It was an African swallow, not a finch. - Alex Scoble
anna, road trip funny doesn't count. I've been on those, and after awhile anything is funny. - Aaron Krug
@Alex thanks- corrected :) - anna sauce
Please view the "dead parrot", "silly walks", and "spam" skits...feel free to add other classics. - Alex Scoble
Yes! Life of Brian is the best. So funny it was banned in some parts of the world. - Baard @ Pixum
Norway, right? - Bren -- feeling merry
It's a 'Mr. Death' or something. He's come about the reaping? I don't think we need any at the moment. - mikepk
The Grim Reaper skit in meaning of life is one of my favorites for some reason. "Shut up! Shut up, you American. You always talk, you Americans. You talk and you talk and say 'let me tell you something' and 'I just wanna say this'. Well, you're dead now, so shut up!" - mikepk
My friend wanted me to do silly walk with him at graduation. That is pretty funny. - anna sauce
Taking notes on the classic skits - Aaron Krug
Get a Fawlty Towers box set from Amazon (Cleese only made 12 episodes). And tell us what you think. - Roberto Bonini
Netflix or somehow RENT the TV shows first. Like a tree, the TRUNK is Flying Circus...the rest of it springs from that...it gives you context for the movies that you'll also need to see...then maybe you can hit some of the videos of the live shows and even Faulty Towers. But watch the Flying Circus TV Shows IN ORDER! (towards the end of its run, Cleese leaves...and that changed the show) That's how I would go about beginning the journey that is Python... Good Luck.... - Live4Emma (L4S)
@Bren: Yes, Norway. It was even used as an advertisement for the film in Sweden: The movie that is so funny that it was banned in Norway - Baard @ Pixum
yes, and more. - Duncan Riley
