"Three Reasons You Need to Be on FriendFeed *Now*" - http://bhc3.wordpress.com/2009...
"Three Reasons You Need to Be on FriendFeed *Now*"
Actually, I'm getting tired of Friendfeed. Most discussion is vapid, banal and inconsequential. IOW, a waste of time. - Dawn
Me too Matthew. I use it that way to some degree. - Steve Rubel from email
Is there a way to get a friend feed onto a personal web site? - Peter Fletcher
Thanks for posting this Steve. And Dawn, are you deliberately ironic? Regardless, this post is for those who may not have the time to engage actively here, but will still benefit from being part of the service. - Hutch Carpenter
Thanks Brian. - Peter Fletcher
Nice work but a lil late on this BNO - sofarsoShawn
Peter, you can also embed an individual thread on your site by copying the code from the "Share" link - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Oh, Dawn, that's rich cause I blocked you for bringing vapid, banal, and inconsequential stuff to friendfeed a while back. All you have to do is look at all the items from the Google I/O conference to see just how wrong you are: http://is.gd/HaUQ - Robert Scoble
"Personal Content Database" is quite apt (especially if we could have our service icons back) - When working in twitter and waiting for twitter's page to refresh a new post, it is quicker to jump to FriendFeed, because the post is there instantly. - Chris Loft
@rahsheen thanks for the tip. - Peter Fletcher
BS, Robert. You blocked me because I'm not one of your sycophants but actually challenge your assumptions, motivations and actions. Like when I said you were neglecting your blog, you retaliated against me, but just two weeks later, Arrington said the same thing and you took that seriously. But I'm just a female, right Robert?...somebody you keep calling stupid, even though I'm sure my... more... - Dawn
Amen to that! - Calvin Ayre
Dawn, I think I love you. - cecily
Dawn: you don't even have a clue about why I blocked you. It's cause you were arguing religion and politics and had no clue who Ralph Reed was and then you followed it up with the lamest posts on global warming I've seen that it made me wonder why I was arguing with someone so clueless (and I forget there were a few other things you were arguing about). So much for that high grade point average. By the way, I don't remember Mike Arrington ever talking about that stuff. - Robert Scoble
BTW: I unblocked her for some reason, I still don't know why. Oh, yeah, my brother stuck up for her and so far I've seen just the lamest additions to the community, like this one here. If friendfeed's discussion is vapid, banal, and inconsequential IT IS OUR FAULT. So, Dawn, this one is on you. Good riddens, I say. - Robert Scoble
Ahh, community. - τorƍue
#4 Bacon - sofarsoShawn
Yeah, right, Robert. I'm so lame that Louis Gray announced both on his blog and on FF that I'm a great person to follow. And you're comment about Ralph Reed just once again shows your bigotry against Christians, lumping us all in one basket - that far right fundamentalist basket that you once belonged to and now despise. I never did belong to it. I'm Catholic, not "born again." I've had... more... - Dawn
Btw, two people have DM'd me that Scoble is best ignored. I can't do that. Being the target of repeated and consistent defamation by Robert Scoble isn't the same as Joe Blow FFer calling you an idiot. Robert's words carry a lot of weight in the tech world. I've asked Robert privately and politely to back off and as you can see, he's refused to do that. I not only have the right to defend myself, but I have a duty to my present and future investors and to my future employees. - Dawn
FriendFeed's usefullness to me would increase 100% if I could automatically filter out every post with "friendfeed" in the title. That way I could get rid of the constant yapping about how great it is, and actually use it usefully. - Ian Betteridge
Bump for the good times. - Mark Krynsky
This is a post from last may! The situation has totally changed since then - DC Crowley
"even though I'm sure my IQ is higher than yours. Were you valedictorian of your high school? Or graduate magna cum laude? Did you get a graduate degree with honors" wow that means even i don't qualify :( - ffcode

I'd like to make FriendFeed show brizzly images inline. Is there a way to get a thumbnail given a brizzly ID. http://pics.brizzly.com/thumb_s... seems to work but can we be guaranteed that it is always .jpg? - Benjamin Golub
Hi, Mr. Golub. That'd be pretty swell! Yup, that's correct, we have a thumbnail api listed at http://brizzly.com/api that I haven't pointed anyone to yet in case we fell down hard today. - Chris Wetherell
Awesome, putting in the change now. So it's always http://pics.brizzly.com/thumb_s...? - Benjamin Golub
Yup! (Or, at least, that's the plan.) - Chris Wetherell
Pushed! Thanks for your help Chris - Benjamin Golub
Great. And it will be helpful for cell phones if thumbnails via FF-API have height/width setting. - NaHi from f2p

How Can We Be Creative if We’re Drowning in Data? - http://siliconangle.com/ver2...
"As much as I love the field of data analytics, I fear that we’re in the middle of data overload and that might actually paralyze us instead of helping us be more creative." - I don't think it will paralyze us, but it can very well distract us to a large extend. - Meryn Stol
Better tools, like visual analytics that don't require a PhD to use, would help a lot. - Kevin Pedraja
I think it all depends upon one's attitude toward the data. If it's data for data's sake, then that can squelch thinking, for sure. But if you really do use it to see new patterns and find new insights, and then you step away to *do* stuff, that's fine. Good, even. - Kathy Fitch
...filters, for everything! - .LAG liked that
Just remember, make sure you've got an actual hypothesis before you go around collecting data. - Victor Ganata
Hmm.. I thought this was maybe gonna be an actual, y'know, creative person talking about dealing with the problem of a constant data stream.. but no, it's another 'interactive marketer' discussing what works for him.. - Andy Connell
Andy, the creative types are probably off looking at the moon, dancing, reading or writing a poem, dreaming up a new project, pondering, arguing, making things. The best way to be creative in the face of data overload is to offload some of it, seems like--just step away and be free. - Kathy Fitch
Start small, pick of the chunks you can deal with. Build over time. Dont forget the golden rule.. keep it simple ;) - Riaz Kanani
Splash in the data river, but don't soak in it. - Trent Hamm
Perfectly put, Trent! Splash, don't soak--and definitely don't drown! - Kathy Fitch
Data does not equal insight. As every online interaction continues to generate more and more quantitative data, the importance of properly executed qualitative research becomes more and more crucial. Change always occurs at the margin. - Tom Webster
We definitely need to set aside time for creative activities, and also, just quiet, contemplative time. I coach businesses, nonprofits, work teams and individuals in making their lives and work environments more creative, to solve business problems and promote innovation as well as having a more balanced life. I definitely have to step away from the data stream and social media part of... more... - Cathryn Hrudicka
Sounds like you're a good coach, Cathryn. It's sad that folks have to be helped so much to live full and satisfying lives, but we all do lose focus, now and then. - Kathy Fitch

Steal! Ben Darnell Leaves Google Reader Team, Joins FriendFeed - http://www.techcrunch.com/2009...
Steal! Ben Darnell Leaves Google Reader Team, Joins FriendFeed
"Ben Darnell, a key member of the Google Reader team, has left Mountain View to jump into startup life. Darnell bailed Google for FriendFeed, which was founded by ex-Googlers and notably in part by Kevin Fox, who used to work with him on the Google Reader team. Darnell is FriendFeed’s first hire in over a year, and will get employee badge number 13. He starts today, and according to the blog post announcing the steal, he’ll be bringing his “ninja-fu data-storage and scalability skills” to the startup." - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
This article is actually a bit off on one detail -- Ben left Google about six weeks ago, but just recently decided to join FriendFeed. - Paul Buchheit
lucky 13 ehhhh - johnpiercy
The fictional version is more dramatic. The fact that he left Google 6 weeks earlier ruins the whole Steal! angle. - Bruce Lewis
Plus I actually left the Reader team about 6 months ago, so it's even less of a "Steal!" - Ben Darnell
And Reader has only gone downhill since you left. :-) - Jesse Stay
Also, you haven't actually "left Mountain View", either, unless FriendFeed secretly moved to Pleasanton or something while we weren't looking. - ⓞnor
祝贺PB啊,又拿下一员大将 - 阿石
still, it's a good steal! :) - sha-mayn teh
growl. don't they have a fact checker? or do they only go for drama? :( - Jenna Bilotta
But fact checkers wouldn't be real-time, while drama often is. And we all know that real-time is all that matters anymore. ;) - Ben Darnell
Bummer. But congratulations too. :) - Matt Cutts
Who cares about reader. But is this the guy behind duckmylife? What's going to happen to that crucial project now?!? - Bruce Lewis
Congradulations! Friendfeed Team. - pastas9 from BuddyFeed
Bruce, as you can see in the photo, duckmylife is behind me. (but no, I don't have any connection to DML, just a friend with photoshop) - Ben Darnell
Congratulations! - Ruchira S. Datta
Does the FF team now have enough brain power for world domination, if so is the team going to get bored of this whole internet thing? - Steve C
That would be interesting if tech had a trade deadline like MLB Baseball. - Nathan Johns
I'm sure it's already been done, but Fantasy start-up? - Shirley Wu
If Ben was superstitious and didn't want #13, could he get #14 instead at FriendFeed? Just a hypothetical. - Cristo

$299 plus $18 upgrade fee for a 32 GB iPhone 3 G S, replacing a first-gen iPhone where the original two year contract was nearly complete (I activated on September of 2007). I was also offered an 8GB 3G at $99 or a 16 GB 3 G S for $199. "As an existing customer, you qualify for the following iPhone pricing: You'll be able to choose the iPhone you want a little later in the process." - Stephen Mack
Thanks for sharing. Now that is sounding more like it! For anyone else finding themselves here, this is a sharing thread, not a hate thread. My goal is to help keep the corporate greed to a minimum and to help shed some light on the question of: "Who gets which price-point?" since it seems to be abundantly clear that the answer is anything but clear... - Walt Ruppar
Got an original iPhone on Day 1, re-upped for the 3G on Day 1 as well. I'm getting the second tier $399/499 for 16/32GB, with a note that I can am eligible for best pricing on October 21. - David Chartier
Day 1 buyer for both iPhone and IPhone 3G. Got the 399/499 for 16/32 with better deal sometime in December. Go figure. - Andrew Leyden
Bought both iPhone and 3G on Day 1. Also got 399/499 for 16/32 with better deal after 12/12/09. Preordered 32GB at 499 anyway. Sold 3G for $350 since wife doesn't like nor need smartphones. So will wind up paying $200 (counting tax & fees) for the new 32GB 3G[S]. - ronin
If my 3G[s] is "Ships: Delivers by June 19th" according to #apple store order status and when I reserved I was told I "may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 06/18/2009", I wonder when I should call Apple to investigate? Just thinking out loud here, but if I'm only reserving a product that won't ship until the day my contract is up, shouldn't I be provided a standard upgrade... more... - Walt Ruppar
@Walt - Let me know if you call Apple. I Pre-Orderd my iPhone and it hasn't switched nor have I gotten an email verifying my purchase in queue. I purchased the $299 White 32G and I want to know if I will get it on Tuesday or if (like At&T) they'll send it later - after my contract ends. =( - Aaron M. Clay
Calling tomorrow so there is only one day left under contract. Honestly, I'm not even looking for a one-day early deal... Holding off on the charge/ship until contract is up would be fine for me and save me a couple hundred bucks... - Walt Ruppar
I was just about to call and figured I'd have a look on the inter-webs first. Guess I know what the answer will be... "AT&T gives in: anyone who bought iPhone 3G in Sept 2008 or earlier gets $199/299 pricing on 3G S: http://bit.ly/8IubE" Hmm.. tempted to just see if the price reduction happens auto-magically, but for $200 bucks, I'm gonna call! - Walt Ruppar
As far as I understand it's the full rebate for anybody who would eligible for it in July, August or September, whoever this could be. I bought my 3G on July 18th and apparently I'm eligible for an upgrade in December. This also means that iPhone 3G in general is not eligible as it was releases in July 11. - Oliver Bouchard
This just in straight from #Apple Customer Care: Apple is reviewing each order for rebate eligilbility and will contact you if you are. Check your email. Even though I am eligable with a 6/18 contract end date, I stll must wait to be contacted too. Took me 45 min on hold to learn, so I figured I'd save some folks some elevator music... - Walt Ruppar
Walt: you have an iPhone 3G? - Oliver Bouchard
Yes, but my contract is still from my 2G. I upgraded to the 3G via a craigslist purchase and just swapping my sim. AT&T caught up to me within a month or two for the extra 3g monthly data charge, but my contract end date stated the same. Also, I made it a family plan by adding a krazor a few months ago and still no change in contract end date. - Walt Ruppar
Thanks, that explains it. - Oliver Bouchard
Ummm... While I am extremely excited to have a FedEx tracking id, it would seem that I am still paying 499/32GB, as of now at least, even though Apple told me otherwise just yesterday. I have a feeling that they are gonna take my $ anyway in the form of receiving an Apple gift card... Deja Vu? - Walt Ruppar
Want to recoup your iPhone investment? Buy the 3GS.com forum, which is on auction... ;-) http://bit.ly/FgMWf - Viqi French
Still waiting for my refund email from #apple I know @ChrisPirillo got his... What about this guy? Oh and Viqi, I give 50k doll hairs for the domain... - Walt Ruppar
$199 (16GB) + $18 upgrade fee + $30/mo data + $5/mo 200 text messages + $11.94 tax = $228.94 one time + $35/mo recurring - I got to keep my current rate plan though, which saved me about $20/mo under what new customers get shafted with. Still ended up with $15/mo more due to the "iPhone Data Plan" being more expensive than the one for every other phone. Edit: Arrival and activation not... more... - xero
Wow, #Apple just punted me to #AT&T... Still haven't gotten my rebate notification so I called back to customer care. They told me that they've contacted all the affected customers from a 'list' ATT gave them and my name wasn't on it... I really just almost sent my 3GS back to Apple because of this run-around... Gonna give one shot to ATT first though. This is crap! - Walt Ruppar from iPhone
I got the $299. 389 with tax, activation and applecare. - Drew Lucas
Ha! Exactly what I thought AT&T would say... Preorders via the Apple site are Apple's responsibility.... Guess who I'm on the phone with now? - Walt Ruppar from iPhone
The CS manager changes his tune when I asked him how to retrun the product for a full refund.... Still have to wait for a call back tomorrow, but feeling a little better that worst case I return this one and go buy a new one at the correct price! - Walt Ruppar from iPhone
Sorry to hear of all the hassles, Walt. - Stephen Mack
I'm sure I'm a small % exception here, but thanks Stephen. Just sharing the experiances, but still haven't lost faith in Apple. I mean honestly I sort of figured I wouldn't get the magic refund email and would have to call back... According to AT&T I was elligable for upgrade on May 2... So I ahold have just recieved the 299 price from the start. - Walt Ruppar from iPhone
Hmmm... Can't but think #Apple is giving me the runaround here hoping that I will just walk away... Here's the e-mail I recieved this morning: "We noticed that you contacted us recently about your Apple Order XXX and wanted to ensure your issue was fully resolved. If you have any additional questions or concerns, we would like to address them." Damn straight I haz additional questions... Called and the CS agent was like "I don't know why you received that e-mail... we'll have a manager call you back today" - Walt Ruppar
Excellent... #Apple sent me a survey link asking me to tell them how I feel.... :) - Walt Ruppar
I dunno who to be mad at... Apple or AT&T? Either way neither of them is willing to refund me for an over-paid iPhone 3GS, so it is being returned for a FULL Refund TODAY! Reverting back to the 3G for now and will eventually walk into a store and buy it for the right price. No restocking fee and I get a online store credit as an "I'm Sorry" from Apple. I can try MobileMe Remote Wipe now... - Walt Ruppar
I paid $199 - I got my 1st gen iPhone in December of 07 and was eligible for the upgrade pricing. And my 3GS owns :) - Brett Kelly
Brett, that's a 16GB 3GS for 199, right? And yes the 3GS does rock! - Walt Ruppar
Well, all may not be lost for me... AT&T CS is diligantly working on this case... it's been 40 min nows, but looks like I may get that refund after all. AT&T opened a special case for my issue. (that's a combined phone time of apprx 2+ hours though between Apple & AT&T to resolve the over-payment) I knew if I pestered enough it would be resolved... now I have to wait up to 72hrs for an AT&T manager to call me back. - Walt Ruppar
Wow... Thanks to AT&T and more importantly, Katrina, you rock!!!: "free text was a credit on your acct of the 200.00 that you was over sharges from Apple left VM will be notes on the acct.Have a very good day Katrina Davis.ATT." woot woot! Guess Ill call apple today to cancel my return... :) - Walt Ruppar from iPhone
Brad Williamson
Let's all give our personal perspectives on why Twitter is AWFUL
muffbird-noper1.png
1. It's substanceless. It's impossible to say anything of real value within 140 characters. Why do you think so many people are using it to share links instead of their own personal insight? Because no one can make a substantial point using three word sentences! - Brad Williamson
2. It's turning into MySpace. Ya know how back in the day so many people wanted to inflate the amount of friends they have so they could be PERCEIVED as being popular? Well that's happening on Twitter right now. Unless you or your entity is a public figure, there's no way all those followers are listening to you. As a regular Twitter user who isn't any type of well-known thought leader,... more... - Brad Williamson
3. Here's how a Twitter conversation unfolds: 1. I write a Tweet (I hate saying that word). 2. Moments later, a person replies to that Tweet as best they can in 140 characters. 3. Because I haven't been on Twitter in a couple hours, I finally see their response and do my best to reply to them in 140 characters. 4. Hours later, my response is seen and replied to. ...This delayed... more... - Brad Williamson
4. All the hype is causing mainstream news organizations to OVERUSE the platform. Valuable on-air time is being used to either see what Twitterers are saying (in 140 characters, NOT MUCH) about an issue, or they're asking us to follow them during time on segments when they're supposed to be reporting news. - Brad Williamson
5. Public figures are starting to believe that all it takes to be considered someone who is "fan friendly" is to write, or for their assistants to write, quick little tweets. As a fan of certain celebrity Twitterers, I find it to be insulting that they think they can satisfy my hunger to gain deeper insight into their lives with this lazy approach to fan "engagement." - Brad Williamson
I use twitter primarily to converse on hot trending topics :) - Swaroop
I'll post more of my beef with with Twitter in a bit. In the meantime, let's hear some well thought out reasons why Twitter is awful so that those who love the platform can feel a frenzy to argue back ;-) - Brad Williamson
@Swaroop Do you feel like you can express comprehensive thoughts on trending topics within your limited character space? - Brad Williamson
Twitter is/was/will be a big success owing to fact that people don't have time to blog (I know some ppl still manage to pull this off), but most of them would just like to dump their quick thoughts onto a platform easily reachable. - Swaroop
@Brad: Agree to the fact that expressing a huge belief couldn't be done in 140 chars, but that's where we have conversations (Reply to a tweet) right ? For scattered conversations - I am still able to successfully stay in loop/touch with the trends & friends - Swaroop
@Swaroop Why wouldn't you use Facebook, or any other social media platform that allows you to breath a little, to share yourself with friends and family? - Brad Williamson
It is changing as do all children as they grow up. So far, I still like it. :-) - Mathew A. Koeneker
I don't feel like I can have a conversation on twitter without threads - Ryan
@Brad: I'm using Facebook - But it's too personal for scattered thoughts. Sometimes strangers are better judges for random crazy ideas/or when some work related help (some technical prob). Plus I do have the twitter app repeating the tweets back in Facebook for those one or two friends who don't tweet. - Swaroop
@Brad: Like your image on Blue "ugly" duckling *ahem* bird - Swaroop
@Matthew Besides the Trending Topics (which has just tuned into a "FOLLOW ME!!" soapbox) and a few other little improvements, I personally don't think it's evolved that much. To me, it's still a constrained conversation prison (I wonder if that made any sense ;-) - Brad Williamson
@Swaroop HAHA! Yeah, when I saw that pic, I knew it would be perfect for this conversation ;-) - Brad Williamson
I like it for what it is and if Twitter expands options that will be a good thing. This site 'Friendfeed' offers more options for expression--I like that feature also, even better, I like the cc feature to Twitter. All social sites will eventually, I think, become an octopus like entity with many arms linked to one another in clouds. - Johnice Reid
Full of 'celebs' - Kevin J Hatton
@Johnice I think we all can agree that FriendFeed is the king of of the real-time ring. - Brad Williamson
6. Using Twitter often forces you to have to say out loud the word "Tweet." I swear, if that word is ever included in the dictionary in the coming years, I'm gonna lose all respect for the English language. - Brad Williamson
7. The suggested users list represents a desperate attempt to encourage people to become engaged in the site. Not only will those suggested users never reply to anything you say to them, but it's likely that you won't be a fan of any of them in the first place. - Brad Williamson
8. The Trending Topics feature has already become a spam machine. Sure, some people leave relevant comments within these topics, but, for the most part, it's just used as a place to get new people to follow them. - Brad Williamson
It is Schrodinger's birdy I think of it as a quantum communication. I am speaking to everyone and no one at the same time. - Robert Higgins
9. It's hogging all the hype that FriendFeed deserves. - Brad Williamson
@LLL Your experience of FriendFeed would be much more enjoyable if you wouldn't privatize your feed. I'm just sayin' ;-) - Brad Williamson
10. It's sad how many people say that traditional blogging is dead and Twitter is the future. How can constrained commentary and conversation trump a platform that is limitless in function? With such a philosophy it would seem like our culture is doing everything it can to embrace a dumbed-down appreciation of ideas and information. Twitter's current popularity gives it the influence to... more... - Brad Williamson
Twitter sucks because it won't auto-refresh on the Nokia N800 :) (via http://ff.im/53bCT) - George Dearing
Twitter is on the bottom of a very large trend, it will be as ubiquitous as email. But yeah Brad they will have to replace wikipedia with twikipedia. Explain the 10th Convention of the Parties on Biodiversity in 140 characters. - Robert Higgins
Brad -- permit me to voice a contrarian opinion on Twitter. :) I think it is currently the world's premier news distribution system. I used to share your views on Twitter until I realized that tweets can point to documents of any type or size, including long articles, books, dissertations, movies, etc. -- one click and you are on the full document. Now I use Twitter to track the latest news from dozens of high-quality news sources. For discussions, I use Friendfeed mostly. - Sean McBride
An appalling lack of features and reliability - LANjackal
Spam. - Will Higgins™
Good article Brad. I think you make some very good points. - Kevin J Hatton
The lack of features is really the only thing that bugs me. I can't believe a company with as much venture capital as they have and as huge of a userbase hasn't managed to innovate.... at all. I still use Twitter religiously, as that's where the majority of my friends and connections are, but I really wish they'd fix some things. - mike fabio
Peoplebrowsr is overflowing with features for managing Twitter. - Sean McBride
I agree with Sean. I use it to track news from various sources as well as the thoughts of others. I post quick links to things from the web that I want to share, but if I have an opinion to share in the form of a longer-form response to something, I'll blog that, then usually post a link to it on Twitter. I'm new to FriendFeed and still trying to figure out how to fit it into my flow, but i like its ability to do much of what Twitter does without the 140char limit. - Kevin Arth
It's easier to just crosspost tweets to something with more features like Facebook. That way if someone has a follow up they can put it there instead. Other than that it's mostly a glorified mailing list, though I think Dane Cook proved to us that even that has some use. - Ben Blackford
Twitter will peak in 2009. - Patrick Breitenbach
Who wants to read about what strangers are eating for dinner without at least seeing pictures of the food? - Amy℠
Twitter may be awful but guess what? I tried to get people to come to Friendfeed and they didn't. So it's what we live with. - Morton Fox
I love twitter because it allows me to use it exactly how I want to. Follow and unfollow and block allow spam to effect me very little. IF you are autofollowing and auto dming then spam will ruin it for you and in fact... you are spam. Its only awful if you let it be awful. it is awful as a ongoing conversation tool, but not what it was built to be I dont think. A baseball bat is a... more... - Cody Heitschmidt
One of the ways in which it is awful is that you cannot have a discussion like this. When public search worked properly you could follow conversations there but that part of the Twitter experience is broken for me and many others; which leads me to a second way it is awful - the apparent unresponsiveness of Twitter in addressing the search problem, but I am going to comment on that in tollie williams' Twitter search question. - Phil Harrison
I hate that historical posts have no real use. After 10 to 20 posts no one cares about what was posted before that. Plus the search is crappy. - tomit from iPhone
What about ways in which it is not crappy. For me It has been an excellent introduction to new people (globally) and mediums (such as friendfeed). I have made new friends and acquaintances that I enjoy communicating with and yes a few of them are famous people who really do try to communicate and they have my admiration for that. Now that I have been introduced to friendfeed, however, Twitters' flaws are more and more apparent. - Phil Harrison
discussion on Twitter is strongly constricted by the (in)famous 140 char limits. I tends to look with interest to new experiments like Qaiku, where there is a true conversation model, where replies are not conditioned by length... - Marco Castellani
i like twitter - Bill Rawlinson
I like Twitter, but the Visigoths have definitely stormed the gates with spam posts, links to their own blogs, zero conversation, and WAY too many hashtags. In short, it isn't Twitter that sucks - it's we users who suck. - Ciaoenrico
1. Spam followers! 2. updates that are not relevant to me at all. - Rohit
Twitter sucks but thanks to FriendFeed we can discuss why. - Sivan Mozes
RT Let's all give our personal perspectives on why Twitter is AWFUL - elefantastico
When you get dropped off the Twitter search, your Twitter life is effectively over. I have been dropped off the Twitter search since June 10, and I have a broken heart that shall never mend. I loved #Journchat with all my heart. I was never in my entire life as happy as I was in Journchat on Twitter. Now, I will never again be able to participate in Journchat. When you get dropped off... more... - J. D. Ebberly
Same thing happened to me buddy. Apparently once you get dropped off Twitter Search, it's permanent - LANjackal from IM
Great points 1-10 Brad! I would only add that twitter search sux (for more than this dropping issue that JD and LANj are talking about) because it only goes back in time a short period of time. I do find twitter useful but wish everyone was on ff instead... that would be more useful. :-) - Chris Heath
Twitter is like a food you really don't like, so you just don't eat it. 140 characters limits creativity but if you can't get a point across within those limits your language skills are lacking or you are using the wrong medium to make your point. Plenty of people do get Twitter and use it creatively. If it's not for you, stay away. No-one is insisting you use it. - Gilbert Harding
I don't really think the spam criticism is fair. If FriendFeed had the same amount of users as Twitter then there would be the same amount of spam. Also, if people are spamming you just unfollow them. The only real problem is the spam in the trending topics. Personally, I love Twitter and FriendFeed. I don't mind using both. - Shawn Hickman
Don't really like twitter, but I agree. Spam on the network is very easy to avoid unless you're automatically following everyone who follows you, which is just plain stupid IMO - LANjackal from IM
Why I find Twitter to be valuable (a few feeds I follow): Antiwarcom, alleyinsider, amnesty, atul, bbcpolitics, bbcscitech, BreakingNews, CBSNews, CFR_org, cnnbrk, cqpolitics, dailydish, DavidCornDC, DemocracyNow, dorait, EFF, foxnew_pol, FP_Passport, Gizmodo, glenngreenwald, guardiannews, guardiantech, haaretzonline, harpers, huffingtonpost, HuffPolitics, infowarsstories,... more... - Sean McBride
WOW. Thanks for the list of Twitterers who are worth following. But I gotta strike back with a counter point... Instead of Twitter, why not use an RSS reader to filter through their latest content, where you can read the entire headline as well as the article's by-line? - Brad Williamson
Brad -- actually, I am experimenting on a regular basis with using Google Reader, Feedly, Friendfeed and Peoplebrowsr as front ends for browsing and managing Twitter feeds. I haven't yet settled on any one interface as the best (my opinion keeps changing from day to day and with experience). Also, I have noticed that as a rule 140 characters provide more than enough space for the artful... more... - Sean McBride
Twitter = Divas, Wanabe Divas, People on Prozak and Spammers! There are a few nice people there, but it is really hard to have a conversation! So unless you have a large following, the best way to use Twitter is to follow the peeps you are interested in, and then go to their blogs, FaceBook, etc, to talk with! - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Twitter = some of the best news sources and minds on the planet. Twitter is only as good as the feeds you choose to follow. - Sean McBride
You people have an awful lot to say about something you dislike. No one is forcing you to use Twitter. No one will resent you if you leave. - Tal Shafik
@Sean, so Twitter is for broadcasting, if you have a following. Twitter is not for dialogue! - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Actually it's far more useful to me the more people that are on it. But is least interesting in feeds from self appointed A listers. I avoid those and all is good. - Cole Jolley
Igor -- yes: Twitter is primarily a *broadcasting* medium, and nearly useless as a discussion medium. Friendfeed is probably the world's premier discussion medium. Friendfeed could easily match Twitter as a broadcasting medium simply by providing the option to hide all comments under a list view interface (with one click to open the discussions). - Sean McBride
Sivan Mozes hahahah... that is so true. It's like Friendfeed users need to constantly remind and assure themselves they did the right thing leaving Twitter - Andre P. Siregar
we didn't leave twitter.. twitter left us. - joking aside though i don't think there's many ff users who don't have a twitter account maybe 10%... maybe (if i had to guess) - Chris Heath
Already said my piece, in long form, here: http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2009... - Uche Ogbuji
Nice article, Uche! - Brad Williamson
I think the market is big enough for facebook, twitter and friendfeed. Google wave will only strengthen twitter further with its extension Twave. Twitter has all the high profile people in it.. celebs, technologists, u name it.Twitter has its identity as a microblogging social network, Friendfeed has its identity as an aggregator with microbloggin features. Both hav their place. I think most will shift their base to facebook from twitter once facebook unveals the "everyone button"... - Gtp19
there is not many desktop and phone clients for friendfeed.. any social network is nothing without its users.. i think more the people get to know about and use twitter, there is much of a chance for them to use friendfeed. - Gtp19
Brad, point #10 is the most relevant in my opinion. Despite illusions to the contrary, our culture has been barreling down the "dumbed down" path for quite some time. I hate to think what the future will hold if we continue this pattern. - John

Seriously, TheHenry, if you play with the 3GS, you'll notice the difference right away. - Mona Nomura
Yeah, I have seen it in videos, but I haven't actually played with it. :( - TheHenry
You should. It will blow you away. Frankly, I wasn't expecting a difference but it is quite blatant. - Mona Nomura from fftogo

My role as a teacher is being compromised by the intrusion of tools that render aspects of my daily goings-on as obsolete. This I won’t stand for. - Milton Ramirez
So this may not be a very popular opinion, but I think that technology-- as a whole-- is given too much emphasis in grade school. There's a place for it, sure. But I think we're stealing opportunities from our children for independent thought and making them lazy. - Jason Huebel

I see there's tons of new people here on friendfeed participating. How do I know that? Because there are tons of white icons in comments. That means I am not following you yet. Just a month ago all I saw were blue icons. That's cool and welcome to all the newbies!

Sometimes it takes a while to catch on. Friendfeed is much more interactive than the others. If yo have interesting friends they post interesting stuff. No filtering necessary. The spammers do not get followed. - Alan Morris
