Two things here: Apple really played it safe with a familiar device (known market). Also, this is Bill Handel's style. Don't take it the wrong way. :)

Leo, the iPad does well what it is supposed to do--multi-media, ebook reader, internet, etc. However; for those of us who don't have extra income to spend on such a device, we must focus on a device that incorporates much more. The iPad is a smartbook, and nothing more, which is OK, but I think will be surpassed in quality and functionality by other slates (cf. MSI & HP models) to be released soon and that appeals to a wider market.

For instance: I would really like to, in that amazing photo viewer, view all the photos on my home server. Over my wireless network connection from the couch. As far as I know, I can't do that with iPad. I can with HP Slate, though. I don't get the crazy pinch-to-peek thing though (which, admittedly a slick turn of the UI, is not really important to my goal). That said, there is no real reason I can think of that would suggest that this product won't be successful for Apple.

I don't think there's a way to talk him down from the ledge.

No, it is actually a Linux computer. Think of it as a laptop with a small formfactor. Don't insult it by comparing it to a *phone*.

I still want to try one. The fact it is restricted to T-Mobile only in US is what makes it a deal breaker for me.
- Corey Marthaller
Surely you can buy the N900 unlocked?
- Zap Andersson
You can buy it unlocked, which is what Leo did, but the 3G GSM frequencies it uses are T-Mobile only in the US from what I understand.
- Corey Marthaller
Well, I believe it'll work on the AT&T 2G network, so it's not "restricted" to T-Mobile, per se.
- Ken Sheppardson
And heck, Verizon would have you believe only about 1% of the country gets AT&T 3G anyway, so no big loss, right? :-)
- Ken Sheppardson
Leo, I would be happy to take it off your hands for a week so I can do a review.

Thank someone it's not an iPhone! Don't need apps to do everything, a lot can be done natively. Apps will come, sure, but don't actually *need* them. The interface is no more awkward than the iPhone when it first came out. Same with integration and function. But coming out of the gate, N900 is a lot more functional than iPhone first was!
