One of the male cats that hangs out around my building has sprayed by my front door. Not cool. Thinking I should ask the resident manager to hose things down. Should I spray the area with white vinegar as well? Or something else?

I use Anti Icky Poo on everything though I don't normally have to deal with spraying I do regularly deal with more concentrated urine issues. Only thing that has ever kept my cats from still smelling the urine or whatever scent. Rachel, thanks for reminding me that we actually own some Anti-Icky Poo. Sammy was diagnosed with a moderate gluten allergy (likely exacerbating his skin problems). So now I'm trying to wrap my head around a gluten-free diet for him.

From the wiki article: "A gluten-free diet allows for fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and many dairy products. The diet allows rice, corn, soy, potato, tapioca, beans, sorghum, quinoa, millet, buckwheat, arrowroot, amaranth, teff, Montina and nut flours and prohibits the ingestion of wheat, barley, rye and related components, including triticale, durum, graham, kamut, semolina, spelt, malt, malt flavouring or malt vinegar." - Stephen Mack from Bookmarklet
There are many more gluten free options than before. I'm sorry to hear that. - Shevonne from iPhone
Yeah, there's definitely more available than there used to be and the Bay Area is an epicenter of that availability. There are a number of folks here on FF who have gluten allergies and could offer advice. I wonder if there's an FF room for it? Shoot a note to RAPatton, too. He's an expert at making goodies that are gluten-free. - Spidra Webster
We're here for your Stephen. Both Janine and I have celiac so the house is gluten free. Just let me know what you need to know. It's not that bad once you figure out the logistics. You can eat all fruits, vegetables, potato, meat, rice, non flavored chips and once you know where to shop you can make almost anything. Hardest part is being smart eating out but even that's easier than ever. On FF you can ask me, Lix, or RAPatton for advice. - SteVe C
Thanks so much! - Stephen Mack from iPhone
I have a couple emails to send you with local options but I have found that quinoa pasta tastes best (at least to me) and I have a favorite glutin free pasta sauce I'll double check the name for you. Also Mexican food has lots of glutin free options. - Rachel Lea Fox from iPhone
Thanks Rachel! I made him some rice pasta mac 'n' cheese the other night. It was awful. He hated it. (Although Sophie liked it okay.) - Stephen Mack
Yeah I never liked the rice pasta either. You can get quinoa at most super markets. I don't need glutin free in everything but I still make it sometimes. - Rachel Lea Fox from iPhone
My mother-in-law has celiac as well, so we're pretty well-versed on travelling with it as a consideration, where to shop, restaurants that are accommodating (and I imagine that like Seattle, your area has a lot of them). I also agree that the quinoa pasta tastes best and has the best texture. I also have a lot of recipes for cakes, etc. - joey
Stephen, my favorite pasta sauce is Mezzetta Napa Valley Bistro. I love the Creamy Vodka Style Marinara but all of their sauces have been good. I also sent you an article about the all gluten free store in SF but here it is again: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin... - Rachel Lea Fox
Got the e-mail, thanks! So far with Sammy, I've learned he really likes simple. I tried two different gluten-free bars, and the one I thought he'd like with caramel was too much, but the straightforward rice puff and peach one he liked a lot. (He's still not big into sauces.) - Stephen Mack
Oh and there was a discussion on here about a particularly good gluten free brownie mix. But now I can't remember if it was from Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. I'd know if I saw it. Can anyone chime in with the answer? - Rachel Lea Fox
I think the most challenging thing about this is that he's a picky eater to begin with. Plus he's allergic to nuts & peanuts, And plus he's saying he wants to be a vegetarian... - Stephen Mack
Rachel is it this discussion? From that it looks like Trader Joe's is recommended. http://ff.im/R6oEy - Jimminy, CoG of FF
Oh goodness that is difficult. I just know when I was experimenting with gluten free I was surprised to find that pasta sauce had gluten in it. I never would have guessed that. Turns out it was good that I did since it seems I have no gluten allergy but in tomato products they must remove something else, likely a preservative, that I have huge issues with. So all my pasta sauce has to be gluten free. - Rachel Lea Fox
Jimminy, that wasn't the original discussion I saw but I think you are right. I just remember discussing the brownies on here in the past and getting a box and trying it and really liking it. I think the original discussion is so old that it is no longer in the buffer on here. :( - Rachel Lea Fox
Kristine is gluten free and no doubt can help, Stephen. - Louis Gray
Williams-Sonoma carries gluten-free flour and other mixes from Bouchon Bakery: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/search... - Anne Bouey

Steve, he's 6. Tequila is a ways off. :) - Stephen Mack

Ok, guys, I need your advice. Some guys at work love doing pranks, and they've hit me a couple times. I've expressed that I don't really like it, I don't retaliate, and yet they keep doing it. What aggravates me is their continuing to do it because I don't like it. It's now grown to text and Facebook bombing me outside of work. What do I do?
Can you sit down with them and remind them again how much you don't like it and want it to stop and then explain you'll have to go to their supervisor if it continues? - Kelli H.
I'd report it to HR. This is bullying. - Katy S
If they keep doing it after you tell them to stop, I'd talk to a supervisor. - John (bird whisperer)
I think I'm going to try talking to them one more time. The very first prank was done by a guy who recently left for school and everyone (including my supervisor) knew about it, and that pissed me off a bit. I don't know how much I can complain about the texting and Facebook bombing, but I can unfriend them. I hate being seen as a "sore loser" but I'm so tired of this. - Kelly
Last chance e-mail: "Guys, this is too much. I don't like the pranks, like I've already told you. Stop now, please. If it continues, I will have no choice but to talk to HR. OK? I don't want this to interfere with our work relationship, but enough is enough. Thank you." - Stephen Mack
They are feeding off your reaction, so an option might be to have no reaction. Act like it never happened, that you didn't even notice. Then they'll move on to other targets. If that fails then complaining to the supervisor seems best. - Todd Hoff
I really tried the no reaction thing, and they kept egging me on. Bringing it up and laughing about it continuously and I'm so, so tired of it. - Kelly
I'd just go to HR at this point. Sounds like you've given them plenty of notice and plenty of chances. - Spidra Webster
Then f*ck them, nuke 'em :-) - Todd Hoff
It's harassment, and letting them "move on to other targets" just lets them harass more people. If they don't stop, it needs to be reported. They are creating a hostile work environment. - Katy S
Go to HR. This is harassment. Full stop. - Jyl BlueBott
I'm going to talk to them and my supervisor so it's "on the record" that I tried to work it out myself first, and went through the appropriate steps. If it continues still, I'll go to HR. Because they've been there for 3 years I've felt like I'm in the wrong for screwing up the environment they know and are comfortable with, but it's just not working anymore. Thanks for everyone's input, I really, really appreciate it. - Kelly
Sounds like a great plan! *hugs* - Rachel Lea Fox

CASH Music Platform by CASH Music — Kickstarter
"So first there's the problem we see. Everything starts with musicians, but with all the money around music they're the last to see any. All the musicians we know work so hard just to keep their heads above water. The whole Internet thing was supposed to make things egalitarian, but it didn't. It's mostly startups with big money and major labels making weird deals and everyone else still working so hard and keeping their heads above water. Entire companies are being built around the idea that if they can finally make the Internet work for musicians then they can get rich. Some are making things better. Some are making things worse. But they're all doing it backed by millions of dollars on the promise that they'll deliver billions later — and in their world it's consumers (fans) and product (music, more specifically music copyrights.) So what we did was build a whole lot of things that musicians can use, do it in the open where it's all totally free, and do it as a Nonprofit so Sony... more... - Spidra Webster from Bookmarklet
They are doing very well. $5000 already. I think once they are a full non-profit they need to hire a grant writer or PR person. Things are not very well written and they will need that going forward. But they have a lot of professional support in addition to the artists and I think they will get there without a problem. - Rachel Lea Fox

3 giant Pacific octopuses join Aquarium of the Bay
"They came from the deep. They have 15-foot tentacles. And now they're oozing around Pier 39. They're three rarely seen giant Pacific octopuses, caught by a crab fisherman and now - in all their gelatinous, eight-limbed glory - mesmerizing biologists and the public at Aquarium of the Bay. "They're so iconic - it's sort of like shaking hands with a sea monster," said marine biologist Mike McGill, describing the experience of holding one of the new arrivals. "They wrap their arms around you so they can feel you and taste you with their suction cups. If they don't think you're a predator, they can be very friendly." Aquarium of the Bay, a nonprofit run by the Bay Institute, every year tries to persuade crab fishermen at nearby Pier 45 to turn over giant Pacific octopuses that sneak into the crab traps in search of fresh Dungeness. The aquarium uses the octopuses for research and to give the public a chance to observe the mysterious creatures, the largest octopus species in the world but... more... - Anne Bouey from Bookmarklet
What happens to them at the aquarium? If the get 1 a year do they have a display of 5 or 6? - Rachel Lea Fox from iPhone
"The octopuses are each about 4 years old, geriatric for the species, which has a life span of 3 to 5 years. They'll live out their days at the aquarium free from predators and with plenty of Dungeness crab to feast upon. Scientists, meanwhile, hope to learn a little more about the elusive, wily animals. Octopuses may be shy, but they're able to twist open jars with their arms and squeeze their squishy bodies through the 7-inch opening of a crab trap." - Anne Bouey

Burning Blog » Blog Archive » Ticket Update: Radical Inclusion, Meet the Other Nine
"For all the frustration, anxiety, stress, and heartache this year’s ticket lottery has caused, please accept another humble apology. Photo by John Curley This is no time for issuing statements or putting a spin on anything. The system may have worked, but the cultural outcome sure didn’t, and even though some of you saw that coming and said so, we didn’t, and for that we are sorry. The current trajectory is not acceptable. Even people who did get tickets aren’t cheering right now, since so many of their camps and friends are standing out in the cold. Entire groups are worried they’ll have to scrap all their plans. Burning Man is a participatory and collaborative event, and many collaborations are perilously close to falling apart. Clearly we must reevaluate, but first we want to say more about what we’ve heard, how we got here, and what our next steps will be." - joey from Bookmarklet
I'm not going this year, but there is a part of me that is hugely disappointed with the entire process and how it was handled and a part of me that is delighting in the chaos and the opportunity for BRC to redefine itself again. There is also a part of me that doesn't think their numbers add up quite yet. - joey
Also, I love that someone suggested in all seriousness to move the event to somewhere 'less hospitable' in order to reduce demand. Never in my life have I been anywhere less convenient or hospitable than the current location of Black Rock City where it is still possible to hold an event. - joey
Agree on all counts. I think the big problem now is that I'd bet more than 20k tickets are in the hands of scalpers and speculators. - Stephen Mack
joey, less hospitable = Antarctica - you would have a heck of a time getting the larger art installations there though. ;) - Rachel Lea Fox
Rachel, that I would qualify as not possible to hold an event ;) At least not for 50,000 people who like burning things. Hee! - joey
The burning man would look beautiful sitting on ice! :) - Rachel Lea Fox

A judge decided that the 13th Amendment only applies to humans. That's gonna suck for robots and extraterrestrials.
Was this part of an action brought forward by PETA? - DJF
"As 'slavery' and 'involuntary servitude' are uniquely human activities, as those terms have been historically and contemporaneously applied, there is simply no basis to construe the Thirteenth Amendment as applying to non-humans." http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news... -- yup, the PETA case against SeaWorld got thrown out. - Victor Ganata
well, that was an easy call on my part. But focusing on "human" rather than "sentient", is just kicking the ball down the field. - DJF
Yeah, throwing out the case seems straight-forward, but my speculative-oriented mind can't help but wonder what the unintended consequences of such a precedent could be way down the line. - Victor Ganata
Data will not be pleased. Pickard better get his arguments ready. - The original Kevin
++Kevin - Rachel Lea Fox from iPhone
What about part human hybrids? - <3Heather<3
As long as it prevents the evil clones and zombies from taking over the world, I'll be fine..... - CarlC
But clones are humans! And who wants a slave that wants to eat your brains anyway.... - Victor Ganata
Ah! A clone war debate ;P - CarlC
Ignoring clones, zombies, and hybrids, and within the realm of the possible, what happens five years from now when the researchers do figure out that the dolphins or orcas are, in fact, capable of something like human intelligence? What about all the great apes who learn sign language, and actually create compounds in that language to fill in the gaps in their vocabulary? This is a serious ethical problem now, which the justices just blew off. - DJF
Our species doesn't have a very good track record of respecting basic sapient rights without blood having to be spilt. Unless there's an ape and/or cetacean uprising, I suspect the powers-that-be will find ways to shut down any research that confirms the sapience of non-human organisms. - Victor Ganata
Aw, and here I was hoping someone would emancipate the corporations. - Andrew C (✓) from Android
The problem with extending laws to other species is that rights come with responsibilities. If an orca kills a person, after being deemed smart enough to have legal protections, are they going to be put on trial with a jury of their peers? - <3Heather<3
Heather, if they're smart enough to have legal protections, then one might assume that humans were their peers. - DJF
Plus, it's not about intelligence, or there are categories of people who would not qualify for legal protections. I think humans greatly underestimate animal intelligence because of our testing bias and the insistence that observation is bias and invalid. Animal rights is a tricky subject to find a line and draw it clearly. That's why I'm an animal welfare supporter and not an animal rights supporter. - <3Heather<3
Well, there really are categories of humans who are denied certain rights, though, like children and the mentally incapacitated (although, yeah, the 13th Amendment does apply to them.) I think the judge should've just tossed it out by arguing that performing for food and shelter isn't (necessarily) slavery, rather than denying sapient non-humans protection from slavery. - Victor Ganata
Performing for food and shelter when one is not given a choice is slavery, however. Confinement without consent is imprisonment. In any event, to DJF's question, if interspecies communication goes beyond the rudimentary form in which it exists today, maybe it'll be easier to recognize other creatures as sentient and grant them some rights. However, there will probably be huge opposition from the usual, fundamentalist quarters to anything like that. - The original Kevin
Yes, it definitely can be slavery, but it isn't necessarily so. Kidnapping somebody and making them work for no wages and locking them in your basement is different from making your kids do chores and preventing them from leaving the house whenever they feel like it, or from making your dog guard the house and keeping them locked behind a gate. Also, babies and pets are definitely sentient, but they're not necessarily sapient. - Victor Ganata
Got here late...but fully agree with Heather... - ☆彡Jazzy-B
Blind people of the US rejoice! You won't have to give up your seeing eye dogs or pay them your state's legal minimum wage. - April

Cherry blossoms are in bloom down here, too. My neighborhood is covered in them. Between those and the magnolia, my eyes are so happy! - Anika
I wish my phone could choose subjects and frame them as nicely as yours does. - Bruce Lewis
The almond tree across the street is blooming, and today I saw wild poppies EVERYwhere :) - Starmama from FFHound(roid)!
Wow, Starmama, does the tree produce almonds? Rachel, have you managed to get back to your sekrit orchard? - Spidra Webster
Bruce, I wanted the first shot in a bit closer but the phone wouldn't focus that close. I might go back with the real camera. But overall I'm always pleased with the iPhone camera. I don't have the new one yet though. Starmama, I LOVE wild poppies. They are one of my favorite flowers ever. Spidra, went past my orchard today. It is beautiful and ready for me to go start shooting. I just need to plan out what I want to do this year. :) - Rachel Lea Fox
wow i don't thnk i've seen cherry blossoms here in the hood, cool - SteVe C
Yeah it does Spidra, about half of em are disgusting but the edible ones are yummy. There's a pecan tree in the back but I've never eaten one, they look gross...the squirrels & birds love em, tho. - Starmama from FFHound(roid)!

Bottle mum repeatedly harassed - National - NZ Herald News
"A mother who bottle-feeds her son says she has been repeatedly harassed by other mothers in public - and is now embarrassed to go to the supermarket for his formula." - Melly Botts from Bookmarklet
Ridiculous! Women get abused for breastfeeding in public, and now apparently bottle feeding as well. - Melly Botts
That happened to my mother when I was little. Some people just feel that it is their business, when clearly it isn't. - Jennifer Dittrich
Well damn! I bottle fed my kids my breast milk sometimes. Did they ever think of that?! Also, it's none of their business! >:[ - Zulema ⋅ spicy cocoa tart
I was harassed for bottle-feeding and it was fun to release my inner Julia Sugarbaker and publicly shame the twat who had no idea it was usually breast milk in there. - Anika
I am glad she told the lady to eff off! - Melly Botts
:( - Lix
I have several friends who recently had babies. I have heard stories from several of them about how hard breast feeding was pushed by the doctors and hospitals. So hard in fact that when there were problems early on and a couple of them needed to supplement these poor women were having break downs thinking they were horrible mothers. Most of it was post pardem hormones but that intense... more... - Rachel Lea Fox
*hugs* Rachel, with you all the way. - Jennifer Dittrich
yeah, fuck those moms. Guess what, it isn't always a choice, my mom didn't have one. - Joe "Looptid" Pierce
So moms get harassed for breast-feeding because it's "gross" and now they get harassed for bottle feeding because it's not natural? Well which one is it? I was unable to breastfeed my oldest because of medical issues but I breastfed the other 2 with no problem. However, my own mother offered to buy me formula since "I couldn't afford it myself" so I wouldn't have to nurse because it was... more... - Elena

Yelling at the screen "gimme my damn camera" will likely not make b&h post the pre-order quicker. However it does give me something to do whilst I insistently reload! *sighs*
Do you want the regular or the E version? - Brian Johns
Pre-order achieved!! Sparky, I want the regular (no E) and I wanted it specifically from B&H Photo because I have a large gift card to use. It came up on Amazon before B&H, so Kevin did a back up pre-order which we will cancel. But B&H has come through now! - Rachel Lea Fox
Congratulations! - Brian Johns
Now I just have to wait till April to actually get it! But at least it is actually in process! - Rachel Lea Fox

No Musical Performances at the Oscars | The Mary Sue
"After the controversial revelation that only two songs were nominated for the Best Original Song award at the Oscars, despite plenty of other good songs being perfectly eligible for a nod, Deadline is now reporting that neither of the two nominated songs — “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets and “Real in Rio” from Rio — will be performed during the telecast. So, if you were planning on tuning in for the sole purpose of seeing a Muppets musical number, you can go ahead and make other plans. We’d like to thank the Academy for making their awards show even more boring than it was going to be." - NotdaBOTTurlokin4 from Bookmarklet

oh! I was so excited for that. very sad! - Rachel Lea Fox
