I doubt companies have cut too much, more like they haven't cut enough (jobs). Let's face it: either you've been laid off or you have fear abt getting laid off. Either way, you're not going to spend as much as before. And since our economy depends on consumer spending, all this bad news just feeds on itself & causes even more layoffs. Here in SV we're kind of insulated from the real problems in the mid & Eastern parts of America. Thankfully tech companies have strong balance sheets to weather the storm...

There is cutting of dead weight, but I'm pretty sure the downturn is also used to dump more work on a smaller employee base. I understand the need to cut into the highest expense, which is payroll, but putting more people out of work only leads to less consumption.

I'm only 18 and still living with my parents so this hasn't hit me yet but I really hope all these problems clear up before I have to live on my own so that I have some chance of living comfortably.
