Dasara, also called "Navaratri", is among the most important festivals celebrated in India. Unlike the festival of Dussera - "the festival of joy," this is celebrated for 10 days in some parts of the subcontinent.

Go to http://www.quillpad.com and type your name in English to see how it appears in several Indian languages. You need to use Internet Explorer though, but the online transliteration is pretty cool.
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
indic transliteration is also provided by google (http://www.google.com/transli...) but many a times you have to know the pronunciation in Hindi e.g. quark transliterates to कुँर्क and if you type kwaark it gets transliterated properly to क्वार्क

Question: Does any (non-Indic) other language/script has the horizontal bar running across a word?
- thequark
Okay guys, leaving now. Will be dropping in every now n then, b4 i'm back full-time, BYE:)
your handwriting is really neat! and thanks Abi! hehe :D
- vijay
Thanks Vij :) . And Tina, 'FFing Enigma' was a bit too difficult to translate(as my mother-tongue isn't Hindi), but I'll try, again :)
- अभिषेक(Abhishek) Das
Nah, don't worry about it. I just enjoy seeing other people's handwriting (it always makes mine look so horrid in comparison).
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Perhaps, Vijay =P To clarify, though: I really like seeing how people in other countries write. I had penpals in Egypt and Greece when I was younger and I loved seeing how different their handwriting was compared to what I saw in the US.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Yes, seeing other people's handwriting is interesting, thats why I started a 'My handwriting' meme.
- अभिषेक(Abhishek) Das
ha! I was just kidding about the maso thing Tina. I like to think I know you better than that. he he :D
- vijay
I suppose you can read both the scripts, Vijay. Can't you?
- अभिषेक(Abhishek) Das
That's neat. I'm still practicing writing my Hindi and I can not get my letters to work. I think I'm writing them wrong.
- Anika
Hey that's my name! Hee hee, and it's "Loyless" not "Loyness." Still awesome. :D
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
yeah Abi. I can read hindi. Back in school we had 4 languages Hindi, Tamil, English and French. Add my mother tongue Malayalam along with the language I'm learning now, Japanese, and you get the list of pretty much all of the languages I can read and write. Not all of them to the same level though. I'm fluent in English the most, followed by Japanese. Funny how that worked out.

Vijay, Wow, thats kool.. Abhishek: we can type in devnagri (don't have a webcam at my disposal right now) my name Prateek: प्रतीक Quark: क्वार्क. BTW ह in vimoh looks like 8
- thequark
@thequark It looks like 8, 'cause it is eight:P :) The '8' is for 'oh' , had I written ह, it would have been pronounced as 'vimoha' , where as it is actually, 'vimoh' .
- अभिषेक(Abhishek) Das
vimoha should be spelled as विमोहा, विमोह is the correct spelling for vimoh. I was discussing the 'a' factor in anglicized spelling of hindi words with a friend few days back. interesting stuff here http://tinyurl.com/m2vnzn
