From the page: Inglis says that conservatives "should be the ones screaming. This is a conservative concept: accountability. This is biblical law: you cannot do on your property what harms your neighbor's property." Which is why he supports placing a price on carbon and forcing polluters to cover it. Asked why conservatives and Republicans have demonized the issue of climate change and clean energy, Inglis replies, "I wish I knew; then maybe I wouldn't have lost my election." He points out that some conservatives believe that any issue affecting the Earth is "the province of God and will not be affected by human activity. If you talk about the challenge of sustainability of the Earth's systems, it's an affront to that theological view."

From the page: These women were asked to complete a memory test that doctors use to judge brain function. They were also weighed and measured, then scored on an obesity scale known as Body Mass Index or BMI. Over two-thirds of the women were overweight or obese. The researchers found that for every one point increase in a woman's BMI, her memory score dropped by one point.

From the page: "Although the vessels have been praised by wildlife experts, including marine biologists at the University of Southern Mississippi, Castlow and Meador say they've run into dead ends trying to get their boats into the hands of animal rescuers. They've called federal authorities and BP too, but they say no one seems able to willing to tell them how and when the boats might be put to work."

From the page: "Changizi has a different idea. According to his research, the cones in our eyes are optimized to detect changes in hemoglobin as blood varies in oxygenation. In other words, what happens when you blush with embarrassment or turn pale with fear, we can better see with the full human color spectrum. "

An Israeli company developed a potato battery, using boiled potato slices to increase enzymes that help generate a small amount of electricity for up to five days. Potatoes could be boiled when other food is cooking, then, voila, infrastructure-free night light or cell phone charge.

Long article, fascinating read -- From the page: In her iconic 1949 book, TheSecond Sex, the French feminist Simone de Beauvoir suggested that women so detested their own "feminine condition" that they regarded their newborn daughters with irritation and disgust. Now the centuries-old preference for sons is erodingââ,¬âor even reversing. "Women of our generation want daughters precisely because we like who we are," breezes one woman in Cookie magazine. Even Ericsson, the stubborn old goat, can sigh and mark the passing of an era. "Did male dominance exist? Of course it existed. But it seems to be gone now. And the era of the firstborn son is totally gone."

This makes Social Media sound like High School with a potential for litigation -- From the page: Without naming names, Lichtenstein says some of the NPR guidelines have "left staff members puzzled and unhappy about the network's reach into their personal self-expression are." He enumerates three points, the rule that staff "must not advocate for political or other polarizing issues online. This extends to joining online groups or using social media in any form (including your Facebook page or a personal blog) to express personal views on a political or other controversial issue that you could not write for the air or post on NPR.org"; the guideline stating that, "Your simple participation in some online groups could be seen to indicate that you endorse their views. Consider whether you can accomplish your purposes by just observing a group's activity, rather than becoming a member. If you do join, be clear that you've done so to seek information or story ideas. And if you "friend" or...

Popup book w/ scale model of super collider (!) -- From the page: The scale of the paper particle detector is exact, and you put it together as you read through the book. The process mimics construction of the real collider (except you won't need an enormous crane). "I nearly created a political incident, because I almost missed one of the magnets," Sanders says. In the underground version, this magnet is made up of 5.5 miles of wire, but on paper it's practically imperceptible. "It's very skinny, but it's there."

From the page: even if Israel sends in troops to occupy the Gaza Strip 100 more times, no matter how often Israel deploys its military, police and covert power, force cannot solve the problem that we are not alone in this land, and the Palestinians are not alone in this land. We are not alone in Jerusalem and the Palestinians are not alone in Jerusalem. Until Israelis and Palestinians recognize the logical consequences of this simple fact, we will all live in a permanent state of siege - Gaza under an Israeli siege, Israel under an international and Arab siege.
