Singer Melissa Etheridge rails against the passage of the gay-marriage ban in California—and she won't be paying the state a dime.

The gay marriages that took place during the tenure of 'legal' are grandfathered in the law and will receive all the stance of legal marriage. She is still married, and still responsible for taxes.
- Janet
Cool, MelMcb. Glad it gets some use in a place that could really benefit from it. And kudos to you for your volunteer action. :)
- Derrick
This is a brilliant piece. I'd love to see the state try to prosecute for it. And sure she would love it too.
- Michael W. May
Finally...it works now. That was excellent! It's like McCain told him he had to wash his hair and couldn't make the show..then was caught out at the bar...hilarious!

ROFL. Go to about minute 3 where he recommends that Palin takes over the campaign during this "crisis" and minute 6 where he stops at CBS for a TV interview on his "emergency" trip to the airport.

That's why we all wanted Letterman to win "The Late Shift."
- Bryan R. Adams
Ouch. But he was right. And to be honest, Letterman hasn't been funny in a long time but it's good to see he's still got some fight left in him.
- R. Alexander Spoerer
@nathan: he's not wearing a top and almost no pants.. I'm guessing he's pretty cold! ;)

Mona! LOL, i always like dressing in a lousy, geeky or call it whatever style :) i am usually semi skin-headed. So when i wear jeans many people think i am a hip-hop addict!
- Hayk
@alphaxion, it is a frozen chilled and COOL dudy, fresh out of fridge temps :)
- Hayk
hahahhaha! My style ranges! But at home, I wear hoodies ;)
- Mona Nomura
Mona, i also didnt imply i wear jeans all the time :)) but i prefer!! indeed at work i dress up in suit and all shick stuff- monkey suit, as i call it :) gives air of self-righteous importance and flair of condescending to ur stance :) I love that!
- Hayk
of all the things to legislate. Geez. I mean, I hate this style & think it's stoopid, but make it worthy of a fine? I wonder if whale tales and lowcut jeans count?
- It's A W!cKeD World
Yeah.. Did you see Wayne in the VMA. The guy almost use his pants under his knees.
- Nicolas Caitan
I'm too old-school to like these. It was weird too to see a guy in Atlanta with super-oversize 50s-60s pants wheeling his daughter in a stroller. Gotta say he was taking great care of his daughter, but it felt really weird to me...
- Mitchell Tsai
I liked the pic, its funny. But I agree with Sean. Don't see that much of it in Scotland. Must be the, um, weather.
- Roberto Bonini
@Mark - Damn, that's funny. I almost spit tea.
- Rob Sterling
So over this pants thing. I see guys with them down to their friggin knees on a regular basis and they look like idiots.
- Brad Nickel
Sad thing is half of them are self described skaters or "bad" boys; I have one Q- How are you going to run from the cops with your crotch hanging around your kneecaps? Hold and run like your a woman and it's 1899?
- InPerpetualMotion(Gina k)
why do men smell like detergent? i understand American guys not wanting to use cologne, but too much detergent smells like "I live with my mom" or "I am obsessed with cleanliness"
I think a lot of them strongly associate clean laundry smell with clean in general. I shoved my male roommate in the direction of better soap. His girlfriend was thrilled :)
- Jennifer Dittrich
I'm going to need a lot more '+1s' to make up for that Alpha-geek post where I apparently lost 2020 points
- Bren
I smell like cocoa butter (my preferred soap). My "ick-free" detergent and scentless dryer sheets do a good job of not stinking me up.
- Michael W. May
@Nathan I don't want to! Really! It's just overwhelming!
- anna sauce
@Morton Fox this soap smell lasts....
- anna sauce
I mean it's so strong I can tell: Tide or All
- anna sauce
Hey, could be worse - we could smell like sweat, smoke, farts, etc... trust me, smelling like detergent is a good thing!
- Les Zaldor
@Rahsheen: from ron burgundy: "It's called Sex Panther by Odeon. It's illegal in nine countries... Yep, it's made with bits of real panther, so you know it's good. "
- anna sauce
Because "armpit from the gym" is not acceptable?
- Ernie Oporto
"I live with my Mom" - priceless HA, HA!!
- Susan Beebe
And this is why women end up with rectal-pore guys who can't do laundry, cook, or bring home a paycheck, because they think "smells like clean clothes" == "lives with mom." You should be so lucky as to have a man who acts like he still lives with his mother.

"At a press availability in Monroe, Mich., Barack Obama said: "Back off these kinds of stories." "I have said before and I will repeat again: People's families are off limits," Obama said. "And people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. So I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18, and how a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn’t be a topic of our politics.""

this where I take exception not with the attacks, they should not be allowed, however this exactly a topic very dear to a large part of America right now
- Fred Grott
Obama continues: "I am offended by that statement. There is no evidence at all that any of this involved us," he said. "Our people were not involved in any way in this, and they will not be. And if I thought there was somebody in my campaign who was involved in something like that, they would be fired." Makes me wish the bloggers DID work for him, and are now fired.

Mel: everyone who is subscribed to you sees everything you like. There's no need to reshare this.

I believe that the campaigns themselves will honor this. But how do you control the independent groups? Tell them that you hate them so much that they stop targeting your opponent and start targeting you?
- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
MelMcBride , I agree completely :) Not bothered at all. Everyone should Digg it or push it, whatever they do.
- sergiooo
Unfortunately, this is a noble idea that's virtually impossible to put in practice. The candidate himself can try to follow the rule, but the independent groups won't. And besides, at crunch time, every goes...

Great to see Obama resisting petty ad hominem attacks that plague US politics.

People's families are off limits, I agree. But this why you keep your religious BS and family values crap off limits.

"Bolivian Wrestlers: In the wrestling rings of Bolivia, skirts fly as cholitas fight back!", National Geographic Magazine (Sept. 2008) - http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008...
"The two women ... swing themselves deftly onto the wrestling ring that has been the focus of this afternoon's activity. Swiftly they remove their hats, unpin their shawls, and ... whap, whap, whap! Claudina belts Yolanda one, Yolanda slaps Claudina, Claudina tries to escape, but Yolanda grabs Claudina by her pigtails and spins her around, and WHAM! Claudina whirls through the air, petticoats and braids flying, and lands flat on her back on the mat, gasping like a fish. The audience goes nuts."

"Companies will build two solar power plants in California that together will put out more than 12 times as much electricity as the largest such plant today, the latest indication that solar energy is starting to achieve significant scale. The plants will cover 12.5 square miles of central California with solar panels, and in the middle of a sunny day will generate about 800 megawatts of power, roughly equal to the size of a large coal-burning power plant or a small nuclear plant. A megawatt is enough power to run a large Wal-Mart store. "

There's something so perplexing at how we probably do the exact same thing here in the US but deny it, where China is so hilariously straight up (about some things)
- Eric Rice
You show your age when you bring up Milli Vanilli :P
- Eric Rice
I'm surprised this has received so much media attention (at least here in the US), as if China lacks any sense of decency. As Eric said, the US behaves similarly and no one seems to say a thing about it. Same double standard is applied when criticizing the treatment of the Tibetan people. Many are quick to judge China but fail to recognize the US's failed responsibilities to its own indigenous peoples (not to mention many still perceive and celebrate Columbus as a hero).
- Adam Bohannon
Oh yeah the irony of 'oh yeah there's commies and all but LIPSYNCH WTF'... we get what we deserve.
- Eric Rice
Well, it's interesting to see the response. I won't overstep my expertise since my focus isn't China, but I would argue that lip syncing is viewed differently in both cultures. Differences in worldview associated with individuality and communality should be considered, IMO. (As if the opening ceremony wasn't enough to demonstrate this proposed difference.)

I notice a lot of parallels between this authors screed on hipsters and a lot of the negative press the tech-set get. Anyone notice the same thing?
- Steve Spalding
from Bookmarklet
I agree. I wonder how many "movements" are just different flavors of the same thing. This might be an extreme case, but I doubt it is -- as the author states -- the end of anything, let alone civilization.
- Steve Spalding
While there are some parallels, those same ones can be drawn about any culture with an echo chamber. Those in the chamber are bound to repeat everything that those outside are saying. The problem with the article is the author thinks hipsters should be a "movement", I see the scene as more of a result of the "cool kids" not having anything to rebel against, life is too good and too optimistic for America's current youth. Hipsters are the mainstream sum of all things previously "cool". It's pragmatic really.
- xero
Though I have to say, the writing is excellent.
- xero
I agree. There is nothing to do so a "movement" forms around basically doing nothing. The writing is excellent but I agree it takes the point a little too far and might draw a few too many broad conclusions.
- Steve Spalding
Movement around nothing... Would that make it the Seinfeld of counter-culture? ;)
- xero
I agree, that was excellent writing. And Steve, you're right, it does draw broad conclusions, but this is a topic that intrigues me greatly and I liked it a lot because Haddow sheds light on a few things I've also observed. Not just in hipsters, but Gen Y. I don't think some of Haddow's description are unique to just hipsters, I think they also pertain to many other groups in the Gen Y...

They are the ones who are not only the marketers of the never-ending marketing culture we've created, but they are also the ones who gave birth to this generation and were helicopter parents hovering over these kids and giving into their every whim and giving them every experience and thing that they wanted (and the parents wanted for them). And then there's the other extreme of parents...

I'm a lot more likely to agree with you Miiko. I happen to live and work in a college town, and if there is anything I've noticed more and more is that there is an almost practiced apathy. Not that apathy is anything new, but in the last 10 years or so it seems to have been refined to a fine point. My biggest complaint about Gen Y/hipsters et al is that they really -should- expect more of themselves. They were born into a world with almost unlimited information and into a socio-economic strata (for the -
- Steve Spalding
most part) that gives them the ability to do whatever they want with it. Instead of using this to rise above previous generations, many of them just used it as a way to become more efficiently apathetic. I disagree with the author that this is something new, I just think that society has changed such that we should have moved beyond it.
- Steve Spalding
I'll definitely give it a look. Thanks for the heads up Mel.

Informative article, thanks for posting this. Would love to see some studies comparing neuronal activity of book reading to reading on the web. I was glad to see some mention of different forms of literacy - much needed in this sphere of discourse. Based on my own behavior I know most of my time spent on the internet is reading and writing, and since I work remotely that's usually 6-8 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. I can't say if it's affected my offline reading habits, though.
