I got the Kindle 2. I think I'd be much happier with a macbook air with a longer battery life. g
That is sort of my feeling after getting one. I like it a lot, but I am not sold on e-ink and awkward interface yet. Maybe I need to use it on the beach or something to appreciate it more. - Bret Taylor
if only the macbook air cost $329 :) - Private Sanjeev
the 4-way cursor is a lot more awkward than a touchscreen. and their whole interface seems not as good as a web browser. I'm going to use it but primarily because the battery is so long lasting - Georges Harik
although buying books on amazon store for it supereasy - Georges Harik
The e-ink display causes me less eye strain than a laptop. Still, I wish it had a higher dpi since the letters seem a bit fuzzy at the edges. And, for some reason, I still instinctively want to press the screen. - Simon
yeah I'm going to get the iphone app, that's pretty cool - Georges Harik
you don't really learn to appreciate it until you read several long form pieces -- books, for example. i *love* mine after a year -- can't live without it. completely different than reading on a laptop or iphone. much easier for longer use. interface is a work in progress -- i think touch will be a bit of a problem, though - fingerprints will be brutal. - John Lilly
aren't there smudge free screens? - Georges Harik
if you have one, you should let me know. i feel like i've got this weird nervous twitch cleaning my iphone screen all the time. - John Lilly
Just took a 4 hour flight, Kindle was great on the flight, almost no power usage. Also buying using a laptop and having book delivered to Kindle is great. - Georges Harik

I wish there was a AIR client for FF though. - barl0w
Twhirl works well for FF and it's an AIR client. - Bob M. Montgomery from twhirl
Great article. I want to learn more about the dumping the RSS feeder part. You should share some tips with that. Good stuff. - Amani
Love seeing FF through the eyes of someone who's not a traditional techie =) - FFing Enigma
Thanks Bob! - barl0w
A big part of why I wrote this post and have it running in my number one photo spot on Flickr right now is because I want more of my photography friends to sign up for the service. I *love* seeing photos here on FriendFeed and there are so many talented photographers who are not here yet who need to be. If we can get more of them to sign up, you guys will love their work. Of course there are many great photographers already on here but still a lot more who could join. - Thomas Hawk
I had to re-share this with all my FB friends. :) - Kelly W.
Still trying to figure out this whole friendfeed experience. I've had the account for a while and see lots of my twitter friends posting via ff - Demetri Mouratis
great piece! - mashable
Hi Demetri =) Different people use FF different ways because they want to get different things out of it. What are you hoping to get out of it? - FFing Enigma
Thanks for the tip. I had FF but really never 'got' what it was for. This helped! - Molly Nichelson from twhirl
Nice post Thomas. - Paul Wade
TH - for those photographers that are not on here, I put their flickr id into my Flickr Imaginary friend and see their images that way. However, it would be nice to get more photographers on here with their reader shares and such... - Justin Korn
This is definitely the best "Why Friendfeed" post I've seen. - Nick in Manila
Justin, agreed. I have a bunch of imaginary friend accounts for Flickr/Zooomr users as well. But it is nicer when they actually have accounts here, their work can be liked and commented to the larger FF community, etc. It seems like a few new people signed up today based on this post so I'm happy for that. Thanks Nick! - Thomas Hawk
I have AlertThingy FriendFeed Edition as well as AlertThingy v2 - Outsanity
Well said, Thomas. :) - Josh Haley
Nice list of reasons, all well thought out. While I'm at it, I wanted to tell you that I really like your new blog design too. - Karoli
Do most folks use FF in Standard or Real-time view mode? - Scott Loftesness
Only ever real-time.. it sits nicely on the second monitor as a Chrome App. - Greg Gannicott
Realtime here... - Chris Gulker
Did you just reformatted your post, Thomas? It a lot easier to scan through now. - Alan Le
Alan, a lot of times I post first and edit later. I probably shouldn't do that, but yeah, after posting I broke up some of the paragraphs better, bolded a few things etc., to make it easier to read. - Thomas Hawk
That's great. Make sure to check out Windows Live Writer for formatting blog posts if you haven't already yet. By the way, I love the new blog design. It's much better than when I helped you with the html way back. - Alan Le
Y'know... I must've spent two months randomly Tweeting things like "Will someone PLEASE explain to me why I should be using FriendFeed?" ... And then two days ago I start using my account (I'd had one for a while)... and NOW someone finally makes a post outlining why I should be here. You're two days late, Mr. Hawk, two days late. :P - Lou
actually, there's no search for Russian word forms on Frf. For me that looks as if there's no search at all - orie
hmmm.. I didn't know that orie. It seems like there is a lot of international users on FF, that's surprising to me. - Thomas Hawk
I've been trying to make sense of FF for months now, but every time I come away confused. As it is I feel like I'm drowning under all the social networking sites available. I use Twitter, Plurk and Facebook the most, and I use so I only have to post status updates once. How can I integrate FF into this without making things even more confusing? - Chris Taylor
oooh! I found the zooomr version of this post with no formatting and I whined somewhere else in my FF feed. This one with all the formatting is better :D - Tamar Weinberg
I really liked how you did a post on Flicker - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
All good reasons but #10 is my #1 reason :) - Mark Krynsky
Mark - agreed. Also, Thomas ... very nice blog. I like. - Amani
@Tamar, the unformated text was a problem on the Zooomr image. Kristopher's fixed that bug now so text in descriptions on Zooomr photos should format correctly now. - Thomas Hawk
I wasn't using FF, but signed up after your post. Now let's see if it is really so useful ;-) - Marcel Körner
@Marcel also take into consideration who you are subscribed to. Aside from maybe four on your current sub list, they are not very active at all on FF. This will affect your experience here. - Carlos Ayala
Didn't know there was a "Porn" room on FF (see screenshot)... - David Young
how did you see that they are not active on FF? - Marcel Körner
David, the "porn" room on FriendFeed isn't all that active actually. I'm not really interested in porn per se, just thought it was a good group name to claim in the great FriendFeed land group name grab of 2008. - Thomas Hawk
@Marcel by their numbers, and the fact that i know most of them and can tell you first hand that they are not. (if you hover over people's names you will see their numbers) - Carlos Ayala
still hard to beat 5 years on for speed - Thomas Power
So true Thomas: people still can't as a majority read dynamic feeds. - Zu from AOD

Sarah models the blue Apple onesie she wore for the first time today. (A pink one is somewhere as well)
It said size 6-12 months, so at 8 1/2 months, I figured it was time, even for this petite girl. And yes, maybe Matthew will end up wearing the blue one more than she will over time, but I think she looks great in blue! - Louis Gray
Jay, happy to help. One of the best books is this one: (Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child) Get a routine going, and don't sweat the small stuff. - Louis Gray
Jay, for book recommendations, we've had great success with this: - Rochelle
Give her little tummy a zerbert for me. - Yolanda
How about a Linux onesie? Don't worry, you won't have to compile the cloth yourself. Seriously, though, rather stylish Apple onesie. - James Rishabh Mishra
Possible, yes, Matthew and Sarah will wear Linux onesies. Web and tech donations are always accepted. :-) (Microsoft included!) - Louis Gray
Sarah looks adorable in blue! :) She's is really cute and playful!! - Susan Beebe
Louis, you'd let them wear Microsoft onesies? In Matthew and Sarah's teenage years, how else will they rebel against their Apple-loving dad? - James Rishabh Mishra
Wow still no hair huh! - Aviv
Bump due to this article: - Louis Gray
Will we be seeing Sarah holding Braden when he wears his Apple onesie? Or will he be sporting only Droidwear? - WoH: Professor MOTHRA
WoH, Braden has both. He's too small for all of it though. Yesterday he wore a 6 month size "Geek Beta" shirt from Microsoft. It was plenty roomy. :) - Louis Gray

Thanks Enrique, I'll post some more soon. They are a little more obvious than these ones. As Luke points out; without being able to look closely it's impossible to tell. He's right; but up close it's more obvious. I'll upload the originals to Picasa later, and then you'll be able to zoom in with any photo viewer and see for yourselves. I can't believe how many people liked these. A few people have reposted them already. Thanks! - Michael Fidler

If you are serious, I've never given you a reason to question my integrity, nor do I ever intend to. However, the second set is up now, so judge them for yourself, but don't judge me! BTW, I messed up and reposted the shot of the women again. Oh well. Hope you like them:-) - Michael Fidler

WOW "I can't believe it's in pencil" - sofarsoShawn
LouCypher, I know it well, but I don't see why I would want to do that. I hope everyone knows by now that they're not mine? I'm sorry, but I can't say it any clearer than that. - Michael Fidler
nah, i don't believe it is done in pencil. i am sure it is photoshopped :) - hasin hayder
These would be great even for photos. - Ronald S
i'm not able to comprehend - Varun Shenoy
I'm finding this both interesting and humorous at the same time. There's a separate message board where this post is being discussed and it has another forty comments on it already. I think its great how this has created some lively discussion, considering that when I posted this I was doubtful if anyone would even like it. When I went to sleep last night there was only had 3 or 4 likes... more... - Michael Fidler
Very interesting. I would like to see them up close and in person...just to make sure. Bill said it's real and possible. Your 2nd set of picts look like pencil. Nice work in finding these! - LaFern Cusack
Kol, I can't thank you enough! Kol found another post which helps to prove that these are done in pencil. I had my doubts about a few of them because I collected them from several different sites over time, but the site Kol found has done a great job pulling together an impressive collection of these drawings and more. Take a look - - Michael Fidler
Actually there are more than what this site shows. There's an entire set with the cats(little cats), which I have, and there's a new portrait set. - Michael Fidler
Found your post here, Michael. :-) I tried my best to find the artists. - Kol Tregaskes
Amazing and very very very good.... Very impressive ... - Linda Zeek-Bobinski
fake. Even if your not claiming to be the artist, these are photographs, well except the woman, thats pencil - james foor
Yeah we know, thanks though, James. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Excellent pictures - how long did it take you to scan the photographs into Photoshop and then edit them? The only pencil that has come into contact with these "drawings" is the Photoshop pencil. A tip - stop trying to fool people into thinking you are a "real" artist, because all you are doing is cheapening proper artist's works whom have spent hours creating real pictures as opposed to a few minutes on a graphics editing package. - The Wimp
A bell does ring here. And I am remembering why I was so attracted to the tiger...and the lion for that matter. These are exact replicas of prints I had in our bedroom when I lived in Dallas. I had bought the prints (in color) at a department store, - Melanie Reed
Actually, I have learned quite a bit about these drawing since I made this post. Not only have I discovered all of the artists, but I've learned more about how they are created. They are always copied from a photograph or painting, but usually a photograph. It is extremely time consuming and detail orientated work. There are many other artists besides the ones featured here who practice... more... - Michael Fidler
Most of them have portfolio's on and their work is truly amazing even if they are copies of other artists work. I suppose with this level of detail, they have to start with something. Nevertheless, I'm still in awe of their talent. Melanie, the animal prints you refer to are from a very well renowned photographer. The originals are B&W I'll look it up later but I do have... more... - Michael Fidler
wow; they're unbelieavably beautiful. - liladreams
Has anyone ever corrected the record and pointed out, with the exception of the Charlize Theron drawing, that these are indeed photos by Alexander Von Reiswitz? - erik weisz
Erik, thank you for bringing this up again, but I think I already mentioned something about this in my prior comment. However, since it appears that you only signed up to friendfeed to leave a single comment, (ok, why?) I will try to summarize what I wrote previously. In brief, I learned after doing a little research that all photo-realistic drawings like the ones that I shared here,... more... - Michael Fidler
Awesome - الکامپ
I can assure you that what are claimed to be drawings of animals, in your post here, are photos. I used a website to that allows you to do an comparison of the Von Reiswitz photos and the images you have posted here. There are no differences. Every hair matches up. As a pencil artist myself I can tell you that it's pretty much impossible to get that kind of accuracy and have it look... more... - erik weisz

Eric, it doesn't matter to me if you just joined, and I apologize if I made you think otherwise. If you have any questions regarding friendfeed, please feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them. At this point, I would be happy if we could find someone who is an image analysis expert, and finally point this thing to rest. Every time that I look into this, all I find is a... more... - Michael Fidler
the site spammed above must all be done in pencil too, right, thats why you posted it? - Iphigenie
I'm amazed that people are still posting these photographs of animals and calling them pencil drawings. This is at least the third case I can remember (and there are probably more) of this happening. The myth about them being drawings was debunked long ago. It's also funny that whenever they get posted the person posting them doesn't make it clear that they aren't the artist, exactly as you have done. - canadianmaple09
@canadianmaple09 I posted these back in March, 2009 when I was beginning to use FF regularly. I ran them through TinEye hoping to find their source, but it returned no results. When I ran through again yesterday, TinEye returned over four pages of results. If I had it to do over again, would I? Yes - Michael Fidler
The people you refer do don't join "just to slam" someone, they are concerned members of the online art community that want to see real art appreciated and fake art or photos being passed off as drawings revealed for what they really are. Artists such as Brian Duey, Armin Mersmann, Paul Lung, Zindy Nielsen, and many others do not receive the appreciation they deserve because of scams like this. - canadianmaple09
canadianmaple09, the worthiness of your motives notwithstanding (and they are worthy, definitely) you could definitely have approached Michael completely differently by say, giving him the benefit of the doubt rather than attacking in a highly accusatory tone. - Chieze Okoye
When you've seen these same pictures posted multiple times by people that just find them on the internet and claim they are pencil drawings, when it has already been established on multiple occasions that they are not, the "benefit of the doubt" approach seems a little too generous. People post these images and claim they're drawings to get views for their own site or blog or page or whatever it is they post it on. It's wrong and it needs to be stopped. - canadianmaple09
I can understand that, but you should also keep in mind that everyone is not as well-versed in the issue as you are. All I'm saying is that you would probably be more effective in this case if you weren't setting this up as a us-vs.-them, "must destroy with the validity my argument!" attitude when talking to a guy who's been actively having a discussion on the issue in what seems to me (having been around when he first posted the images and the follow up thread and what not) to be good faith. - Chieze Okoye
Look at his first comment here. People clearly thought he drew them. He doesn't set the record straight. He also claims that they "are actually pencil drawings" and that "I have more drawings too." Later he claims that you need to look at them closer to see they are drawings and that he will "post the originals". Once again, this makes it sound like they are his. This follows the same... more... - canadianmaple09
Greg and Chieze, thanks for your support. I really appreciate it. @canadianmaoles09, for what it’s worth, I share your concerns about giving proper attribution when sharing also. However, I admit that I'm more conscious of it now than I was at the time of this post. Nevertheless, I have never taken credit for anybody's work here other than my own! - Michael Fidler
BTW, I didn't realize it before, but I just noticed that you're new here too. I hope you like it so far and spend more time here. IMO, friendfeed is still the best thing around! - Michael Fidler
I would probably qualify as an image analysis expert, but there's no way to prove that online. One thing we can do is look at color. Even though the images are black and white, they're actually RGB images, meaning they contain cyan magenta and yellow. If you look at the image of the rhino you have posted then look at the photo of the rhino at the photographer's site you can see they both... more... - erik weisz

Developers: If you find yourself contemplating the implementation of custom scroll bars for any reason whatsoever, please take a cold shower instead. Thank you.
1. SAP. No keyboard control, unintuitive response rate. 2. Google Wave. Ditto, plus buggy behavior as well. 3. Some random Flash site where the scroll bar tab didn't even move when you scrolled down. - Stephen Mack
I can't think of any site or app where novel scroll bar design was anything other than a misfeature. The native UI has ~seven scroll bar behaviors, and custom designs always forget at least one of them. Trust me, users will NOT appreciate the creativity of your design. - Stephen Mack
Reminds me of those OMG EXTREEEEEEEEEME overclocking and system monitoring tools that came with some motherboards that had all kinds of Doom/Quake-like crap flying out of the entirely customized window. It looked goofy and dumb. - Akiva
OMG Wave's scrollbars are teh sux0r. I detest Google's scrollbars in general, but these make me think they hate people. - Anika
Akiva, I bet those apps were outsourced and the developers charged by the line. Anika, Joey: Agreed -- Google Wave's scroll bars seem to exist solely to make you appreciate the native scrollbars so much more. Who spent the time implementing that real-time shadow? Was there nothing more productive for that developer to do instead? - Stephen Mack
amen to that! don't break standard browser controls!!!! - .LAG liked that
Pretty much applies to all default controls of the operating systems... - Jemm
Full disclosure: I work at Google, but not on Wave. I'm usually completely on board with the idea that we should leave native scrollbars alone, but before you assume that they were reimplemented just for fun, consider the problem they're trying to solve: Native scrollbars do not handle arbitrarily long scrollable areas well. Take a gigantic document and drag a native scrollbar one... more... - Joel Webber
I have yet to see a good reason for a custom scrollbar. I especially hate Adobe's custom scrollbars in web apps, for the reasons cited above. - Brian Johns
I fully admit that Wave has a lot of details that remain to be ironed out, but it's completely unreasonable to call it "not a real product". I use it in my day to day work very heavily, and couldn't survive without it. Our team is highly distributed, and Wave has really helped us keep long complex discussions from turning into email clusterfscks. Which they usually did in the past. - Joel Webber
Thanks, Cristo. I really needed an extra dose of pedantry today. I'm absolutely certain you're right to suggest that the problems of distributed teams are perfectly solved, so no new tool could possibly improve the situation. I and my team must be hallucinating to think it's helping us at all. - Joel Webber
Joel, I think Cristo was pointing out that your use of the phrase "couldn't survive without it" may be a touch hyperbolic. :) You may not be as productive, but he is arguing that you would still exist as a team of living beings. - Stephen Mack
Joel, thanks for providing the rationale behind why Wave is reimplementing scrollbars. My main concerns are: 1. I'm used to being able to use the arrow keys to scroll. But when in a wave but not editing, the arrow keys do nothing. Same for Home and End. (Fortunately Page Up and Page Down do work, but that's not enough.) 2. The scroll widget is always the same size, so you can't tell how... more... - Stephen Mack
I don't think anyone would complain if the scroll bars were replaced with something better. From what I've seen, this is not better. - pitlord
If it's any consolation, negative reaction to the scroll bars in Google Wave have distracted everyone from how much they dislike Flash custom scroll bars. (I just typo'd that as "scroll barfs." How fitting.) - Stephen Mack
@Stephen: 1. The arrow keys here is that they (along with home/end) are used to move among blips, which one could argue is the closest corollary to the "line by line" one would normally associate with up/down arrow keys. 2. When you're dragging, the shadow is the proportional part, rather than the widget itself. This avoids the problem in traditional scroll bars, where the... more... - Joel Webber
BTW, please don't assume I mean to be the great defender of all that is perfect about Wave's scrollbars. I only intend to help explain what I perceive as a legitimate problem they're trying to solve. I'm certain they're a lot that still needs be tweaked about them. - Joel Webber
Joel, thanks for the explanations. For 1, you're right, arrow keys are working for me now. (I had trouble previously.) So that's great. For 2, I don't see that at all -- the height of the shadow grows/shrinks seemingly based on velocity and then achieves a maximum height, but as far as I can tell unrelated to what's visible on the screen. 3. I would never have guessed that, but sorry,... more... - Stephen Mack

Tech reporters should need to do their homework before writing headlines like this: this is the worst article I've ever seen Mashable write. - Robert Scoble
Mashable should pull that article and do a better job of editing before they publish. - Hugh Briss
Hugh: my problem is 70% with the headline, but 30% with the lack of effort to understanding FriendFeed. - Robert Scoble
Robert, i know you are not the biggest Wave fan yet, but have you tried looking into the public waves? Just add: as a contact, then define a search for example "" and you get the full stream. We have a fun discussion over at Hacker News: I guess you probably know about it already :) - Bastian
Yes, Public Waves are interesting. But far too geeky. If Mashable writers complain they don't get FriendFeed well, then, they have no hope of getting Google Wave. - Robert Scoble
I agree, silly article about Cliqset. - Bastian
If your going to compare something to something else at least try and give me a grid or something to show the features differences. Cnet's prize fights or Louis Gray's excellent article on twitter clients are examples of how it should be done. - Luke Kilpatrick
totally agree, the problem with Cliqset is that they will now be always labelled as a friendfeed clone.. people should move away from putting a clone stamp on services and let them be their own value. - Jaap Willem
RT @Christina Warren: Oh FriendFeed Mafia. Calling people who don't get your service dumb is a real way to win friends and influence people - Wins Fern
Wins: another inaccuracy. No one ever called her "dumb." I called her article the worst Mashable has ever written. But they are not the same thing. - Robert Scoble
I bet it would be pretty easy to find worse Mashable articles. Given the site's longevity and frequency of publishing, they are no doubt out there. But it would make sense that if you were set up to present a case as an authority figure/journalist, you would have a good idea of the services being compared, and that's not the case here. - Louis Gray
BTW, thanks Luke. I didn't see your link until now, but I agree! :) - Louis Gray
