Dustin Lance Black: "When I was 13 years old, I heard the story of Harvey Milk and it gave me hope that one day I could live my life openly as who I am and that maybe even I could fall in love and one day get married. I want to thank my mom who has always loved me for who I am even when there was pressure not to. But most of all if Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago I think he would want me to say to all of the Gay and Lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than by their churches or by the govt or by their families, that you are beautiful wonderful creatures that are valued and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you and that very soon I promise you you will have equal rights federally across this great nation of ours. Thank you and thank you God for giving us Harvey Milk."

'What the hell Fraggle Rock shit' has immediately gone to the top of my list of awesome phrases I will pretend that I made up myself.

I agree! I must start using it at least once a day

I realize this is somewhat random, but can I just say how amazing and lovely it was to see an actress - Melissa Leo - who hasn't had "work" done. Her face was lined and wrinkled and lovely - it was her real, natural face.
I enjoyed Inidana Jones 4. I found it in keeping with the rest: fantastical, melodramatic, fun, action oriented, serialized fluff with a hint of the grandiose.

I've never heard anyone say even the slightest good thing about that film.

My husband worked on the VFX for Benjamin Button. If you're looking for a movie to root for in that category, we'd appreciate your cheering. If it wins, this will be Oscar #2 on his resume. He has an Oscar credit for Pirates 2- he did the Mill Wheel fighting scene!
I saw "he's not..." Friday night. Liked the cast, hated the script. But I kinda knew that going in. I get so frustrated with crappy Rom Com!

the most unsellable movie of the year ar ar

Loved Religulous. A documentary/expose ahead of its time for the mainstream. It would be like a film making fun of flat earthers during the time of Galileo. Too truth would be too controversial, scandalous, taboo.

So, I haven't tuned into the Oscars all night, until now. And I don't understand this format. Why the hell are there long speeches about each nominee before the award is announced? What happened to clips of the performance?
I love the new format with 5 former winner. It's more powerful and meaningful. Seeing the reactions of the nominees as they listen to their peer laud them is a wonderful touch. This was the best Oscar night in memory.

These are actors: people who make a living keeping in touch with their very human sensitive empathic sides. They are some of the most human (as in humanistic) people alive, when their sensitivities is mixed with intelligence.

how exactly would being a scientologist bring a member money. sure the "church" makes money... but how would advertising that he's a member be good for him?
- Jen (SquirrelGirl)
I'm guessing saying he *ISN'T* is what's good for his career. People don't exactly have a very positive impression of scientology after all.

Overall, I think this was a good show! I like the individual recognition of nominees by their predecessors...makes it more emotional. And GO SEAN PENN...
slumdog millionaire ends up with eight awards. not bad for a 'little film' that just started picking up steam as more people saw it, and is just about ready to pass the magic $100 million box office mark.
My only complaint is that too many people value movies only based on how they were personally entertained. There are many, many more qualifiers that go into determining a movie's ultimate worth.
Same is true with books. I totally agree. It's good to know how to appreciate different aspects of a work of art, not just the ones you love

I was the film critic for my college paper and I had a hard time doing movie reviews because how I gauged a film's worth was vastly different than your average college student judged it; I got a lot of hate mail for not jerking off over Adam Sandler films more often. It got worse during Oscars season. Bleh.
