Robert, this piece is right on the mark. Great work. Now hopefully others will take this to heart and put it into action. - Eric Newman
You missed 1 trillion dollar misguided kbr war and its consequences ! - imran
Well stated, Robert. - Mark VandenBerg via twhirl
imran: good point. That drains resources too that could be used to improve our competitiveness. - Robert Scoble
Excellent points Robert. - Jeff P. Henderson
A great post Robert. Speak to people about something they can aspire to, stop treating them like you think they are inbred sheep and jsut maybe Obama can get momentum back. - Soulhuntre via twhirl
I agree with you on the point of what has to change. But you are saying that Republicans are more liberal than Democrats are, which is stupid. So much of America is more conservative than the Republican Party is showing today. And what the government should do in the next 4 years? Nothing but repeal the idiotic laws and regulations causing so many problems like high health care costs. PS-Religion is not taking over our society/government, look at our social habits and all forms of media. - Randy
@Robert: Thanks for the thought provoking post. - imran
Weren't you smitten and totally tricked by the pretty guy who cheated on his wife? - Douglas Karr via twhirl
I wish one day KBR subcontracting awards/terms/prices are released/leaked. - imran
Douglas: yes, I was smitten and totally tricked by John McCain who cheated on his handicapped wife. Thanks for noticing. - Robert Scoble
The same cultural and intellectual arrogance that Democrats displayed in 2004 is back again in 2008. Point well made to get focused on things that matter before Democrats are left stunned on November 5th wondering what happened, empty threats to move to Canada, buying bumper stickers that say "don't blame me," etc... - Peter Kim
Haha - awesome Robert! I bow to your snarky rebute. :) - Douglas Karr via twhirl
Great post, Robert. I've been seeing the same actions from people around me, and it's sad to see Democrats take the easy way out and give up hope for the future. I feel like the nation is at a turning point and to pass up on this opportunity will just continue to further our slide from one of the greatest nations in the world. We don't want to just be "ok" as a country, we want to be "great" and that's not easy. (Also, don't be so quick to blame religion, we're not happy with the situ either.) - Sam Dodge
Or perhaps high tech jobs are leaving for the same reason low tech jobs are leaving...wages are higher here than in other countries. You can improve U.S. education and loosen immigration all you want, but if doing business in China improves your bottom line, companies will hire in China. - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
As much as I loved Robert's retort, McCain is not the least bit pretty. - MiniMage LightBlueRanger
Ontario: the CEOs tell me that it's not just the high wages here (which have gotten a lot lower due to the weak dollar, actually). They tell me they can't bring over here the smartest workers. They can't deal with the high medical costs. They can't deal with the uneducated workforce that's not ready for jobs in science and technology. They can't deal with the infrastructure here (bad transporation systems for moving their workers around, and bad broadband into the home so they are less able to work at home) - Robert Scoble
@Robert: I always wondered what if our government spent one trillion dollars on a new Global Marshall plan to develop the troubled areas after 2001 as a reaction, just imagine, where economy of the world would be today, remember oil barrel price was at mid 20s at start of war. - imran
Weren't we told by the Dems a while back that cheating on your wife in the Oval office was just fine and not a cause for concern? McCains history is not an issue for me - the guy is flawed but human. I can accept that about people. I am not a brittle moralist. - Soulhuntre
just posted this - http://tinyurl.com/yesman - needless to say i think there is a place for concentrating on the shortcomings of the incumbent administration, especially if a candidate is so obviously shaping up to perpetuate them. that said, i will answer Robert's call for something positive, and I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiments behind it. important post. - Dan Light
Great post. I think the key to this election may very well be the economy. In middle America - where the Republicans dominated 4 years ago, people are tired of watching their retirement accounts shrink, as the price of day to day living: gas and groceries continues to rise. If the democrats can come up with a specific plan of attack, this may very well be the point that tips the election. - Lorraine Ball
Actually, Soulhuntre, I think the Dems said that having a consentual affair with one person wasn't evidence of illegally pressuring someone else to bestow favors. - MiniMage LightBlueRanger
Obama should propose temporarily lifting the costs for bringing money into the US. They did this after 9/11 and billions were brought back into the country by all sorts of corporations. Those dollars went into Domestic investment and really helped things out. He could win over a lot of business votes with that move. - Andrew Burd
Soulhuntre - No one said it was fine for anyone to cheat on their wife. Just that it shouldn't be the subject of a congressional investigation and impeachment. - Andrew Burd
@MiniMage - some did. But many, many more went on and on about how character doesn't matter, only policies matter. They never really understood why folks might care about the core of a persons views. Am I thrilled McCain had an affair? Nope. Am I happy to take that flaw over a personality that lets someone cut a shady deal with a guy like Rezco and hag out will Bill Ayers? You bet. - Soulhuntre
Coastal elites want to talk about education, science and technology and infrastructure; hillbillies (like Soulhuntre) are fixated on extra-marital affairs. Exhibit A -- America is in major decline as the world's leading economic superpower. - Sean McBride
Great essay. The main problem -- declining education, declining literacy, declining science and technology, declining generation of intellectual capital vis-a-vis our competitors -- all the other problems flow from those core problems. And the current Republican Party is pandering to a fundamentalist base which seems to hate intellectual activity. We may well be at the end of our run as the world's leading economic superpower. - Sean McBride
@Andrew Burd - many, many dems here in the NYC area (since that is where I meet the most people) didn't care about it at all. They simply denied that it shoudl be a factor in how they saw the man at all. The impeachment stuff was a whole other deal I was not a big fan of. - Soulhuntre
Interesting how this started with me asking Democrats to avoid aiming at Republican groins, but now Republicans are aiming at our groins. Damn, can't we do better than this? I guess not. - Robert Scoble
Robert, listen to the DSC Podcast with Adam Curry. Check out http://drop.io/dailysourcecode You've got a lot to learn. - bill giltner
Most of the problems you cite stem from cultural anti-intellectuallism. I'm not sure what any government or person can do to make America value intellectualism more - we're simply a nation that's become too complacent in our success, and hasn't been able to think for ourselves to solve a problem in a long, long time. Republicans exploit it, but they didn't create it. And I don't think the Democrats can do anything to change it. - Eric
Scoble - love the post. One thing I'd like to ask. Why is that many republicans love to call anyone that is a Democrat a "liberal" or "socialist?" It's like their two year old only this is their new way of calling someone a "poopie head?" I'm always up for healthy debate over the good and bad of both parties but geesh, when the other party can't talk like an adult, it makes it awfully hard to have a productive conversation. - Aaron Strout
I'd vote for any candidate who built a platform around improving the US based on your 6.5 points. Democrat or Republican, these are all extremely important issues. The Reps have already picked which side they want to be on (http://bit.ly/17CClx). I'd like to see the Dems stake as a strong a position. - Chris
Robert - The one problem I had with the post was the lumping legal and illegal immigrants together. America is not mad at legal immigrants. It's the ones who intentional break our laws to get into the country. Come one, come all, but do it legally. Immigration is one of the things that makes our country great. - Raymond Phillips
while I agree 95% with your post, just a minor not: Reagan didn't ask German's to tear down the wall, he asked Gorbachev - but in the end, it was us Germans who tore it down with the tacit understanding that Gorbachev would let it happen - I don't think Reagan's speech had a lot of influence over the millions of protesters in Eastern Germany :) - Frederic
I think it's BOTH AND. I think we should both be talking about the issues dear to us AND pointing out the most newsworthy facts about Palin as President in Waiting because no one in her position has been as woefully prepared. That's not pot shots. That's fact. And too many would forget Keating Five in favor of focusing on the positive. In the end, humor and satire (i.e. wit and intellect) will take down the GOP, not blogging. Tina Fey and Sarah Benincasa, I love you. - jeneane hussein sessum
On the show The Communicators on CSPAN rtsp://video1.c-span.org/project/de/com091308_mcdowell.rm The FCC speaks to the point of the US not really being 19th in the world for broadband. It's not as bad as people make it to be. Check it out. He speaks to net neutrality as well. - Lee Bautista
Wow, everyone has very good comments to Robert's great post. Robert, let me just say that while I'm a republican, I would echo your call to arms... While I do not necessarily agree the Democratic candidates are the correct recourse - a change in direction is most assuredly necessary. Unfortunately, the collective 'we' continue our in-fighting to such a degree we miss the important things such as horrendous medical costs and anti-immigrant sentiment (what happened to the great melting pot?). - ChangeForge | Ken Stewart
You know what I hate? I hate that Robert felt he had to say "My fellow Democrats" rather than "My fellow Americans". Personally, I don't identify with either party, but I can promise you there are Republicans who care about these issues too and even are on the same side as Robert is on some/most of them. The far right pollutes the Repulican name, just as the far left pollutes the Democrats - but Americans are mostly bunched up around the center - and it's only by working together we'll make real changes. - Don MacAskill
good post robert. unfortunately, most americans tend to vote with their heart, not with their head. karl rove has a much better sense of what gets votes than the dems, altho i hope that obama can ris above. still, i agree the issues you selected are pretty much the ones i care about too (particularly: education, immigation, infrastructure... healthcare too, but that needs a hell of a lot more work) - dave mcclure
Robert, as I stated in my previous post, your own candidates admit the are not the right choice for the country.http://twurl.nl/h51657andhttp:... last but not least:http://twurl.nl/ezgmeoThis is your own candidates and your party speaking.Hard to beat your own facts. - Thomas Capote via twhirl
Other countries always did a good job in many fields, the difference is now Americans are paying attention to that. Big world out there. - Adriano Gonçalves
Really good post. For a moment, I actually thought we'd have a policy debate this election, but we're back to celebrities, moose burgers & lipstick. I'd love to see a push to discuss these issues. (Of course, I also think the Democrats have better answers, but I'd still like to hear the debate anyway.) - Paul Rodriguez
Education will never change under any Democrat. The Teachers Unions will see to that. Obama has already had to back off from any talk of vouchers, merit pay, and allowing capable people to teach whether or not they have a four-year education degree. Teachers Unions have crippled our educational system for decades and Democrats are the cause of that, not the solution. - Dawn
Very well said. I immigrated to the US with the impression that this country is home to socially broad minded citizens who lead the world by breaking new frontiers. However the last few years of extreme social conservatism has disappointed me. We as a country seem less tolerent, race is still a major factor in almost everything, education is put down by using such words as "elite" etc. I hope we come out of this social nose dive and once again be world leaders we once were. - Balakrishnan Satyamurti
Balakrishnan: "last few years of extreme social conservatism"??!! Are you kidding me? There are over 1 MILLION babies being aborted every year in the U.S. Gays and Lesbians are starting to marry. Animal rights are going up. Property rights are going down. Genetic engineering is increasing. What the country is most less tolerant of is religion. Yes, race is still a factor, but we've got an African American candidate running for President. That leaves being called "elite" your only remaining barometer for your absurd assertion. And being "elite" isn't even about education, it's about attitude. - Dawn

A. Ask lady to cuddle up with a nice cup of tea and Article VI of the US Constitution tonight (don't worry, it's short!); B. Ask lady who Jesus would bomb (e.g. only brown people like himself, or white people too?) - Anthony Citrano
I worked for about 2 years at a Christian High School and they were pretty progressive and voted for Democrats. For them providing health, education and a living wage to as many as possible was their guiding principle. That and peace. Not in the yeah, lets say peace, but really devoutly about peace. Good people for sure. - AJ Kohn

Actually (and I have to be careful here because left and right is not the same as right an wrong) there was an established fairly conservative authority in Israel in the time of Jesus, and he so bucked and threatened that authority he was considered a revolutionary and was sentenced to death by the government. Surely that would place him in the left, and in this country that would make him a Democrat. (now his feelings on the left's moral platform is another matter) - Brian Norwood
AJ, God is presumably pro life, since Christ suffered and died to provide a path to eternal life with God, and yet God laid out rules for war for the nation of Israel in the Old Testament. Do you find that baffling? - Charles LePage
I don't understand so-called Christians who vote....period. Didn't Jesus say about his followers, "They are no part of the world, just as I am no part of the world."? Jesus himself rejected them making him King. Just goes to show, that not everyone who says they're Christian really are. - Sean McGee
Lindsay, some would actually say wars are fought to defend innocent lives and to prevent the loss of life from being as bad as it could be. What I don't get are the people who think the world has ended when someone loses a job or suffers some calamity they can overcome, but never lose any sleep over the hundreds of thousands of lives that are needlessly slaughtered in the U.S. every year. - Charles LePage
I am a Christian, an American, and a Republican, in that order. If you assume that a Democrat cannot be Christian, perhaps Republicanism has become your chief religion. - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
But Sean, it is also written "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." Therefore since our government allows for voting, I think we should take full advantage of that. - Brian Norwood
Also, that same verse kind of destroys Bush's idea that taking Sadam out of power was somehow doing God's work. - Brian Norwood
Yep, the founding fathers were all, by definition, liberal as well. - Alex IHateMondays Scoble
people like that boggle the mind... - Tim Wright
@Charles: Yes. In part, because you're using the proxy of God in your argument which is, though you'll likely tell me otherwise, open to debate. So let's leave that out of the equation. Pro-life = protect life. War = promoting death. The two are in conflict. I have great respect for those who are pro-life and pro-peace. - AJ Kohn
I don't understand Christians who missed the "Thou shalt not judge" verse, so I guess we're even. - Dana Franks via twhirl
That was in response to the lady, not you. - Dana Franks via twhirl
I actually LOLed at Lindsay's first comment. - ☺ Cecily ☺
@Charles: I applaud your pro-life stance. I assume you are then very much in favor of sex-education to lower teen pregnancy? And if not, I assume you are in favor of gay adoption so that unwanted children can find good homes? - AJ Kohn
there is no single standard for awareness, intelligence, or behaviour ... people come in many varieties, are found at many levels, all feel that they are right ... so how to live in a world like that? tolerance, for one. if you know better, you can only forgive the lesser developed. or ignore. - Gregory Lent
Brian Norwood, the political situation in Israel was somewhat more complex. You had Herodians and Sadducees who believed in the status quo, Zealots who clearly didn't, Pharisees and Essenes who did what they did, and of course the Romans. Some opposed Jesus as a revolutionary, others because he wasn't revolutionary enough, and others for their own reasons. - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
Let your faith influence your politics, not the other way around. - Larry Huffman
I think it's dangerous to try to assign a realm of political thought, or a political party, to Jesus. For instance, some try to say He was a liberal, yet He expressed no interest in social safety nets or in civil rights. He established personal, individual change the first time around that has nothing to do with social or economic status. The governmental and social change will occur next time around. - Charles LePage
@Charles: You also said "wars are fought to defend innocent lives" Who decides who are "innocent"? In the American civil war, were the South innocent, or were the North? - AJ Kohn
Believe me, I'm not really saying Jesus was a democrat. But he wasn't a republican either. And if I can be critical of us for a moment, the Democrats only have a platform of social services because we as a body have put more energy into buying property and having "kept" pastors than doing the Lord's work among the poor. - Brian Norwood
I feel the same way when folsk tell me you can't b compassionate and a republican :) - Soulhuntre via twhirl
@Brian: I'd go a step further. If everyone just took a bit more time to do 'good works' in their community we wouldn't have a lot of these issues. - AJ Kohn
@Soulhuntre: the people who tell you that are equally egregious. - AJ Kohn
AJ, are people who enter the military by default not pro-peace? - Charles LePage
AJ, you ask excellent questions that lead to more questions. If someone is so pro peace that they feel they should never harm someone else, even if doing harm to someone else will defend or save another life, would that same pro peace person never abort a child to save the life of the mother? - Charles LePage
@Charles: No to the military question. Now, care to answer any of my questions? - AJ Kohn
@Charles: Are we really going to stray into the "Is it moral to steal medicine needed to save your child's life?" type scenarios? But in that case, I'm assuming the mother has stated her desire. - AJ Kohn
Your questions, AJ: I have no reason to believe, given the 700,000 to 800,000 teenage pregnancies in the U.S. each year, that decades of sex ed have made a substantial improvement. It amused me to see people say the pregnancy in the Palin family proved abstinence was a failure, when we have no evidence contraception wasn't used. In the end, there's only one reliable method to avoid pregnancy, and we should tell young ladies that every chance we can. - Charles LePage
AJ's questions: I'm not personally in favor of children being adopted into homes where sinful activity is explicitly and consistently displayed. However, the state cannot legislate sinful behavior, and the state at this time has the final word on who can or cannot adopt children. I don't see how, when we are moving towards either redefining marriage or establishing national civil unions, we can deny adoption to gay couples. - Charles LePage
@Charles: You have a decidedly different view at what has been made available in the last decades. Sex ed and contraception are nowhere near as prominent in the US as they are in other countries. These other countries also have lower teen pregnancy rates: http://tinyurl.com/3ayu6u - AJ Kohn
@Charles: On gay adaption. Kudos. Well reasoned and consistent, which is all I'm looking for. Don't agree on your idea of sinful, but given where you're coming from, I understand it. - AJ Kohn

love this song. saw him do spoken word live as well, pretty awesome. but too bad he sold out to Nike..... - Ňicķ
Saul writes: "I received a lot of questions from some about why I would allow my song 'List of Demands' to be used in a Nike campaign. Ironically, half of the people now reading this post never heard of me until that commercial aired. That, indeed, was one of my reasons for allowing it. A small circle of poets and conscious do-gooders are not enough to effect the change necessary to shift our planet in peril. We must enlist people from all walks of life, people not accustomed to questioning the norm, people who may simply want to dance uninterrupted without message or slogan. I see no glory in 'preaching to the converted'. Furthermore, I believe fully in the power of music and have branded my work with it's own conscientious stamp and stomp of attitude fueled to steal the show in the face of the nonsensical. Quite simply, it was clear to me that people would not be rushing to the store to buy Nikes after seeing that commercial, but rather rushing to youtube or itunes to hear or download the song. hmmm. i still don't buy it. There's plenty of better companies to sell to than Nike, and if you're trying to find those "people not accustomed to questioning the norm" then the best way is hardly to encourage them to buy over-priced shoes... plus he makes no mention of how much money he received and what he did with it. I bet it wasn't small change. Did he buy a new car or give it to charity or what? When someone like Saul talks such rebellious talk, he needs to walk it..... - Ňicķ
Besides, it's not like he MADE the song for nike, he made a song and licensed it. I think selling out is more 'making content with the intent for X'... I dunno, I'm not so hand-wring-y about selling out, esp since he was right, first results for the commercial title in google is a couple 'ZOMG who made that song?!!' posts. It also led to him doing the Trent Reznor stuff. So hard to see it being a Bad Thing. - Eric Rice
Actually I think it's worse if you take a song already made and convert it to advertising purposes. In essence you're saying: "whatever this song was once about... now it's about selling athletic gear." Which I'm sure was not the intention when he wrote it. But the comodifying, advertising process changes the perception of the original work. I would have actually preferred he made a whole new song.... - Ňicķ
So what does it mean that I heard about the song (but never saw the commercial) and found the original first? The meaning I'm exposed to is the original one. And honestly, the song isn't about athletic gear, it's being applied to the athelete and their struggle/drive to win. The reason I push on this is because it's not just the time-honored 'oh sell out' argument, it's also because WE ourselves are capable of taking something with one meaning and applying it to another-- and we might not pay, nor r we Nike - Eric Rice
But I also dig that campaign and the slogan, 'my better is better than you better' and I'm an adidas guy. - Eric Rice
ah, touché! but i thought you were a segway guy! - Ňicķ
Life is a little bit like LOVING to drive but hating traffic. I can choose to not drive because of, or just find different ways of coping. Because I still love to drive. :) - Eric Rice
