BILL AYERS: Bill Ayers on Good Morning America -- chicagotribune.com
November 14 at 8:33 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Mixed in with weather updates and a Barbara Walters interview with a pregnant man, 1960s radical and presidential campaign lightning rod Bill Ayers appeared Friday on "Good Morning America" and spoke at length about his past relationship with Barack Obama. "I knew Barack Obama, absolutely. And I knew him probably as well as thousands of other Chicagoans," Ayers said. "And like millions of other people worldwide, I wish I knew him better right now."" - Jason Toney via Bookmarklet
yeah ... chris cuomo tried to take it to him. i think ayers did a good -- not great job -- of explaining the relationship. i think he was too busy playing word games instead of explicitly saying: "we know each other as fellow organizers. he's not a part of my sunday brunch crew. i don't confide in him or vice-versa." although, i guess it doesn't matter since most voters didn't care :-) - tiffany
If I was Obama's strategist I would have jumped for joy when this story came out. People worried about Obama being a terrorist? HERE'S AN ACTUAL TERRORIST. Compare the actions of the two. Nope, proof he's not a terrorist. They did Obama's work for him. - tehKenny
Yeah, I think the biggest reasons why this story didn't have legs is A) it didn't pass the smell test and B) Ayers isn't in jail or Gitmo. He's a college professor who is well liked in Chicago's power circles. - Jason Toney
I liked his answer "I knew him probably as well as thousands of other Chicagoans." It is a subtle way of saying that despite Obama's reach, I doubt he knew "thousands" of people well enough to consider them pals or even close associates. - Cecily

And next year we still won't have a business model...and the next year after that as well. We also won't be able to justify how we are worth $4 billion so we'll rely on sneaky stuff like Beacon. - Eldon via fftogo
I agree that more and more people will share more and more information - I do not think we'll need a Facebook or any other centralized service like it to do it, though. He should have taken the 900 :) - Alexander Kohlhofer

“QUESTION: Do you get offended by an opposing viewpoint?”
November 12 at 9:36 am - Link
I get offended by uninformed viewpoints, rhetoric and propaganda. But not by well thought out opposing viewpoints. Sometimes we just disagree. - Khyle
No. I get offended by stupidity, blatant use of talking points, and lack of actual thought of the person talk to me. - Anika Malone
No. - Patricia
Like Khyle, I am not offended by viewpoints that differ from my own unless they are baseless and uninformed. I'm also respectful of differences of opinion unless that person makes it personal. When I see people directly insulting another user, that goes beyond a difference of opinion. The conservatives I like the most I like because they are intelligent and respond to stuff they don't like with candor - not aggression. They also engage differences of view in a way that inspires connection and interest. - V for Veselka
although I have noticed that on matters of religion, people are quick to take offense. - V for Veselka
No, but I study and teach rhetoric and argumentation. Comes with the territory. - Katy Southern
If it's an actual VIEWPOINT, no. - tehKenny
No. I like to listen to the other side just to see what I am missing. - Russellreno
Like V said. - Donna Mugavero
it depends on how they present their viewpoint. If they do it in a civil way, then no. If they're a disrespectful jerk about it and put me down, then yeah, I'm going to get annoyed. - Maria
I welcome - and grow from - opposing viewpoints. My problem, as others have pointed out, most who present their opposition do so without knowledge. It becomes frustrating quickly. Bored, perhaps, but never offended. - JC unwired
No. I only get offended by extremely-backed irrational viewpoints, more so when proof is offered to counter them. - xero
I thrive on and seek out opposing viewpoints, but I have little patience for people who are unable to express their opposition intelligently, using high-quality sources, strong arguments and solid facts. The community of people who appreciate civil dissent and opposition collectively represent a party that transcends the usual political bickering. They are mutual truth-seekers. - Sean McBride
All human progress, in all fields, is based on dialectic, on the interaction and interplay of opposing and competing views. Argument and conflict dynamically propel us forward. - Sean McBride
Like many of the posters, I don't mind thoughtful, intelligent disagreement. I can't stand repetition of talking points, mindless blather, ad hominem attacks, and other similarly idiotic substitutes for argument. - steplow = Steve Lowe
I really appreciate well thought out opposing beliefs. Something trying to explain it in a logical way. I can respect that. I don't like blatant all out ignorance, no regards and out right negativity for the opposing beliefs. - Chris W

John McCain's appalling attack on Rashid Khalidi. - By Christopher Hitchens - Slate Magazine
November 4 at 3:56 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"On the clouded synapses of Sen. John McCain, it became clear as his campaign limped and lurched to its close, the termites had been dining long and dining well. However much one might have admired the low comedy of his closing routine on Saturday Night Live, it had to be admitted that even in that context, he looked a trifle glassy and elderly, not to say lost. No doubt there was some safe refuge to be taken, by himself and his absurd choice of running mate, in self-deprecation. The true ghastliness, however, was revealed in the crudeness of the McCain-Palin attempt to deprecate others." - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet
A few feeble cracks on a comedy show are not enough to erase the memory of a vulgar and vicious attack, mounted on a rival candidate McCain has publicly called "honorable," only a few days earlier. It had been said that Sen. Barack Obama had once attended a dinner for professor Rashid Khalidi, a distinguished Palestinian academic. It was further said that the Los Angeles Times, which had first reported the five-years-ago dinner in Chicago, was deliberately withholding a videotape of the evening that would show Obama in the audience while tough criticism of Israel was being voiced. - Cee Bee
Cee Bee- thanks for posting this. When Hitchens is on, no one can touch him. His righteous indignation is delicious. - Donna Mugavero
thank you. the quotes above are out of sync, but it's a decent read. hitchens is very a complex person, but i like that he thinks for himself instead of being constricted by ideologies (most of the time). this piece kind of surprised me actually. he goes in on this whole charade in the closing paragraph in particular - Cee Bee
I nearly quoted that amazing closing graf. [Who else can put farcical, senescent, puerile in the same thought and sound so right?] I'm a fan of Hitchens although I hadn't agreed with some of his political ideas a few years back. I respect his complexity. - Donna Mugavero
While Hitchens can sometimes be an ass, he's just awesome with words. - Eric P

It's just a powerful reminder that despite setbacks and a lot of grounds for cynicism, progress *does* happen. I know the election hasn't happened yet, bu I'm still filled with this sense of history - what an incredible thing to be alive for. - Eric P
But here's what I worry about: Obama becomes president and affirmative action programs are viewed as no longer necessary. - Mark VandenBerg
For a long time Europe has looked down on the US for our inner race relations, and rightly so - but now there are many experts who are saying that the election of Obama will shine a mirror on Europe's own race relations and many there know that their minorities could never (yet) be elected president or prime minister. But I think it gives them hope. - JoEllen
Eric, this is why I cannot stop crying when I see thousands including many African Americans taking the time to stand for hours to vote EARLY [which when i think about it when do black folk ever do anything early...LOL]. To the concerns on no longer needing affirmative action - only idiots who want to abolish it in the first place will try to sing that song. furthermore husbands, partners, etc have benefited a good dealy from white women being able to qualify for set asides for women and minorities so they probably will not want to eliminate that. FINALLY: I am hopeful that the ppl will believe that their voice matters beyond November 4th and if foolishness pops up - the public will make their voice heard. Don't forget minorities are about to flip the script with whites. So they would be crazy to try and eliminate the rules when they are on the verge of benefiting from them. - Ruth Ferguson
Mark - I don't think that affirmative action programs will go away. I think that they will shift to being about socioeconomic class. - Aaron Hood
Aaron I am afraid people will point at Obama and say "See? If a black man can be president then we don't need to support..." That's my fear. The sublime ethnocentrism that still is a problem in the world and is bubbling under the surface of many. That people will use Obama as a crutch to support their own ethnic agendas. That people will say "The race to equality is over." These are my fears. - Mark VandenBerg

Wasn't Bill Clinton a major in law as well? While academic credentials surely play an important role on how politics will be shaped in the hands of any future president, i do believe that there are other factors (political, social, etc), which sometimes take precedent in practical cases/decisions. And look no further than Ben Bernarke, the Fed chief. He is a specialist in Great Depression but see how he handled this crisis. Not good at all. - Hayk

The Apple / Microsoft ad war keeps escalating -- while Apple continues to insist that John Hodgman is the human representation of all PCs, Microsoft is taking its populist approach to the streets. Very specific streets, actually -- it's placing "I'm a PC" recording booths outside of Apple stores, like the one pictured here in Birmingham, England. The booth is staffed with three 'Softies who'll try to sell you on the latest in Windows tech while making nyah-nyah faces at Apple store patrons, and guests are invited to make a short video explaining why they, too, are PCs. Not to be outdone, Apple has pledged to send Justin Long to your house to charmingly condescend to you about his various abilities while still pretending to be your best friend. - Leo Laporte

"But CNN is purportedly the most respected source for news. We are sliding into an economic recession rivaling the Great Depression. We are fighting wars on multiple fronts. Trust in our political system is at an all time low. This is not really a funny moment. In today's NYTimes, recent Nobel winner Paul Krugman even opined that American support for Barack Obama represented our nation "desperately seeking seriousness." So why does CNN think that black people have to serve as the court jesters just as we are moving into the White House?" - Cecily via Bookmarklet
I am sick of us not being serious, not taking ourselves seriously, and not demanding that we be taken seriously by others. And this is not just a problem of mass media. Harvard University will be celebrating the scholarship and legacy of W.E.B. DuBois with the delivery of three public lectures by Michael Eric Dyson. These lectures are to be delivered November 5,6, and 7, while we are still processing the outcome and meaning of this election; an election where we either elect or fail to elect the first black president. And the subject of these three lectures is Jay-Z. It is enough to make me want to sign-up with that other black comedian Bill Cosby just long enough to say, "come on people!" - Cecily
No, brother Hughley. Barack Obama was the editor of Harvard Law Review, he taught at the University of Chicago, he is one of only a handful of African Americans ever elected to the US Senate, he in an expansive intellectual with a broad vision for his nation who has built the most impressive political coalition of the last 50 years. In tonight's NBC News interview with Brian Williams, McCain explains that the "elites" are located in D.C. and New York City: WILLIAMS: Who is a member of the elite? PALIN: Oh, I guess just people who think that they're better than anyone else. And-- John McCain and I are so committed to serving every American. Hard-working, middle-class Americans who are so desiring of this economy getting put back on the right track. And winning these wars. And America's starting to reach her potential. And that is opportunity and hope provided everyone equally. So anyone who thinks that they are-- I guess-- better than anyone else, that's-- that's my definition of elitism. WILLIAMS: So it's not education? It's not income-based? It's-- PALIN: Anyone who thinks that they're better than someone else. - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet
WILLIAMS: --a state of mind? It's not geography? PALIN: 'Course not. WILLIAMS: Senator? MCCAIN: I-- I know where a lot of 'em live. (LAUGH) WILLIAMS: Where's that? MCCAIN: Well, in our nation's capital and New York City. I've seen it. I've lived there. I know the town. I know-- I know what a lot of these elitists are. I see his point: If wanting to ban same-sex marriage is to "protect the sanctity of marriage" then banning divorce would also "protect the sanctity of marriage". Divorce is supposed to be a sin. - Nine
The people who are Pro-8 would probably agree with that. - Glen Campbell
Sorry but this just seems like the same kind of 'preaching to the choir so I can say anything and not get called out on it' detritus that FriendFeed sometimes accidentally promotes. - Akiva Moskovitz

Thanks, Glen. I figure if I'm going to make a point, I might as well tart it up a bit. - Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, I was agreeing due to the most adamant in the stance having the same view Nine was talking about. - Amber aka SDA
I think it's a good point. If the opposition to same-sex marriage is based on the sanctity of het marriage, then opposition to different-sex divorce should be based on the same, and be just as strong. Why is there no movement to amend the Constitution to disallow divorces? Unless someone can tell me some other definition for the word "sanctity.' It only makes sense within a religious context and no sense at all in a legal or Constitutional one, which is why it has no business being enshrined in law. - Rick Powell
Heh "Sanctity of marriage." I'll believe that for a dollar. - Victor Ganata
On the other hand, equal protection has everything in the world to do with Constitutional law, and the CA constitution. so, ya know, those damn judges were correct. - Rick Powell
Hey, if you agree that chocolate cake is delicious, you might dig some out of a toilet with a fork if you're hungry enough. - Akiva Moskovitz
If Prop 8 passes, let's see who can still get married. Sex offenders, convicted felons, Sarah Palin's teenage daughter, people who have been divorced muitiple times, people who marry only for money. I dunno, seems like prop 8 really isn't "protecting marriage." - PC Easy via twhirl
