Just a thought but could we please have the option to re-tweet tweets on FriendFeed?
For me this would mean I could FriendFeed instead of Tweetvisor or Tweetvisor for most of my tweeting. #betakoltag-sg-extservices - Kol Tregaskes
what timing. via Zee - http://beta.friendfeed.com/zee... - vijay
+100000000000 - Zee.
Zee, that is easily the highest score I've achieved on F> ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
There already sort of is this function. Just send your likes to Twitter. But yeah, might be cool to be able to customize the prefix for likes to Twitter, so you could use "Liked" or "RT" or whatever. Would need the option of including the @name, too. - Grey Drane
+1 Grey - Chris Rogers
Grey, yep you can share your own posts to Twitter but it would be nice if you could RT anyone's tweet. - Kol Tregaskes
yeah, you really need to be able to include the @username of the person you're retweeting. Just isn't fair otherwise - Zee.
No, I hate the re-tweet. I've unfollowed everyone guilty of retweeting, - Richard A.
Just so I know, you want to be able to take a tweet from Twitter that has come into FriendFeed and push it back to Twitter with the original tweet and a prefix etc... So the person who sees the RT wouldn't have to come to FriendFeed? Is that right? - Johnny
Kol: You can share others' FF posts to Twitter, too, by sending your "likes" to Twitter, but like I and others have said, it would be better if the @name (when available, since not all FFers will have Twitter accounts) was included in the tweet that gets generated. - Grey Drane
Grey, ah OK. - Kol Tregaskes
Bump. - Kol Tregaskes

I'm sorry but this is unbelievable:) I'll give credit to the artist upon more convincing proof! The photogenic look of the tiger and lion really helps the artist's case though:) - Roney Smith
I'm with Roney... I find this hard to believe... or maybe I'm just jealous that I can't even get stick people right! - Jasmin Smith
I don't believe it. Too amazing. - Rahsheen
I'm with Rah - Shey
Only the lion looks like its drawn - embee
The bear and rhino look drawn, too. - Chris Charabaruk

These are amazing, were they done by you? - Angelo Rodrigues
Nice photographs - Rafael Robayna

being slightly skeptical, i'm going to say these were done with pencil by a printer of some sorts... #justsayin - No Name
they're beautiful, but skeptical as well - Jennifer Van Grove
Would need to see higher quality images to see if they are pencil or not - too many jpg artifacts to tell. - Luke Addison from twhirl

Wow!! Yeah it's pretty amazing what they can draw with a pencil nowadays, deviantART has lots of great pencil art. - Kol Tregaskes
Michael, who is the artist? - Kol Tregaskes
wow, cool! - Sarah Perez
I'm really happy everyone liked these. They're my most liked entry to date, Thanks! There also seems to be some question about whether these are actually Pencil Drawings.I can assure you that they are. When I get home, I should have the links. I have more drawings, too. - Michael Fidler from fftogo
Wow, these are stunning!! - Susan Beebe
Yes, especially the tiger. Reminds me of that "Tiger, tiger burning bright." - Melanie Reed
Alright, Mike - I believe you. These are awesome. Good job! - No Name
HOLY CRAP. - Chieze Okoye
no way! - Mister Groonk
Thanks Enrique, I'll post some more soon. They are a little more obvious than these ones. As Luke points out; without being able to look closely it's impossible to tell. He's right; but up close it's more obvious. I'll upload the originals to Picasa later, and then you'll be able to zoom in with any photo viewer and see for yourselves. I can't believe how many people liked these. A few people have reposted them already. Thanks! - Michael Fidler
Absolutely awesome, Michael. You are extremely talented. Everyone should repost these pix and help to make you famous. You should be doing this full time - you obviously have some passion for this. Bravo. - Chris Loft
These are really beautiful, Michael. Do you sell them? - Shannon Jiménez
Chris, I would love to say they're mine, but it's not true. I've had them for a while, but I'll find the artists names. It will just require a little backtracking. Besides, they deserve the credit; all I did was find them:-) - Michael Fidler
Cut the bullshit! :) Photos are very good. - Burçak Çubukçu
I draw alot in pencil, but they are amazing, the best for me is the girl, that is the most photo-like one. :o) - Rob Sellen :o)
I agree Rob, the girl is amazing. My favorite by far! Wait until you see it close up! It's really had to tell, even up close! - Michael Fidler
Burçak Çubukçu If these were photographs, they would be very good. As Pencil Drawings,(which they are), they're amazing. - Michael Fidler
Wow, amazingly realistic - Threepwood
@Michael Fidler did you draw them? How can you so sure? - Burçak Çubukçu
dont look like it - Prakash
@ Michael Fidler don't push so hard :) - Burçak Çubukçu
@Burçak Çubukçu I can't tell if your serious now or just kidding around. I hope your just having fun! If you are serious, I've never given you a reason to question my integrity, nor do I ever intend to. However, the second set is up now, so judge them for yourself, but don't judge me! http://ff.im/1BJh5 BTW, I messed up and reposted the shot of the women again. Oh well. Hope you like them:-) - Michael Fidler
@Michael: try deviantART, not Picasa, to submit your artworks - Zulkarnain K.
WOW "I can't believe it's in pencil" - sofarsoShawn
LouCypher, I know it well, but I don't see why I would want to do that. I hope everyone knows by now that they're not mine? I'm sorry, but I can't say it any clearer than that. - Michael Fidler
nah, i don't believe it is done in pencil. i am sure it is photoshopped :) - hasin hayder
These would be great even for photos. - Ronald S
i'm not able to comprehend - Varun Shenoy
I'm finding this both interesting and humorous at the same time. There's a separate message board where this post is being discussed and it has another forty comments on it already. I think its great how this has created some lively discussion, considering that when I posted this I was doubtful if anyone would even like it. When I went to sleep last night there was only had 3 or 4 likes... more... - Michael Fidler
Very interesting. I would like to see them up close and in person...just to make sure. Bill said it's real and possible. Your 2nd set of picts look like pencil. Nice work in finding these! - LaFern Cusack
Kol, I can't thank you enough! Kol found another post which helps to prove that these are done in pencil. I had my doubts about a few of them because I collected them from several different sites over time, but the site Kol found has done a great job pulling together an impressive collection of these drawings and more. Take a look - http://www.flickzzz.com/2009... - Michael Fidler
Actually there are more than what this site shows. There's an entire set with the cats(little cats), which I have, and there's a new portrait set. - Michael Fidler
Found your post here, Michael. :-) I tried my best to find the artists. - Kol Tregaskes
Amazing and very very very good.... Very impressive ... - Linda Zeek-Bobinski
fake. http://lenscratch.blogspot.com/2009... Even if your not claiming to be the artist, these are photographs, well except the woman, thats pencil - james foor
Yeah we know, thanks though, James. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Excellent pictures - how long did it take you to scan the photographs into Photoshop and then edit them? The only pencil that has come into contact with these "drawings" is the Photoshop pencil. A tip - stop trying to fool people into thinking you are a "real" artist, because all you are doing is cheapening proper artist's works whom have spent hours creating real pictures as opposed to a few minutes on a graphics editing package. - The Wimp
A bell does ring here. And I am remembering why I was so attracted to the tiger...and the lion for that matter. These are exact replicas of prints I had in our bedroom when I lived in Dallas. I had bought the prints (in color) at a department store, - Melanie Reed
Actually, I have learned quite a bit about these drawing since I made this post. Not only have I discovered all of the artists, but I've learned more about how they are created. They are always copied from a photograph or painting, but usually a photograph. It is extremely time consuming and detail orientated work. There are many other artists besides the ones featured here who practice... more... - Michael Fidler
Most of them have portfolio's on deviantart.com and their work is truly amazing even if they are copies of other artists work. I suppose with this level of detail, they have to start with something. Nevertheless, I'm still in awe of their talent. Melanie, the animal prints you refer to are from a very well renowned photographer. The originals are B&W I'll look it up later but I do have... more... - Michael Fidler
wow; they're unbelieavably beautiful. - liladreams
Has anyone ever corrected the record and pointed out, with the exception of the Charlize Theron drawing, that these are indeed photos by Alexander Von Reiswitz? - erik weisz
Erik, thank you for bringing this up again, but I think I already mentioned something about this in my prior comment. However, since it appears that you only signed up to friendfeed to leave a single comment, (ok, why?) I will try to summarize what I wrote previously. In brief, I learned after doing a little research that all photo-realistic drawings like the ones that I shared here,... more... - Michael Fidler
Awesome - الکامپ
I can assure you that what are claimed to be drawings of animals, in your post here, are photos. I used a website to that allows you to do an comparison of the Von Reiswitz photos and the images you have posted here. There are no differences. Every hair matches up. As a pencil artist myself I can tell you that it's pretty much impossible to get that kind of accuracy and have it look... more... - erik weisz
but... it has to be real, i saw it on the internet - Iphigenie
Eric, it doesn't matter to me if you just joined, and I apologize if I made you think otherwise. If you have any questions regarding friendfeed, please feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them. At this point, I would be happy if we could find someone who is an image analysis expert, and finally point this thing to rest. Every time that I look into this, all I find is a... more... - Michael Fidler
the site spammed above must all be done in pencil too, right, thats why you posted it? - Iphigenie
I'm amazed that people are still posting these photographs of animals and calling them pencil drawings. This is at least the third case I can remember (and there are probably more) of this happening. The myth about them being drawings was debunked long ago. It's also funny that whenever they get posted the person posting them doesn't make it clear that they aren't the artist, exactly as you have done. - canadianmaple09
@canadianmaple09 I posted these back in March, 2009 when I was beginning to use FF regularly. I ran them through TinEye hoping to find their source, but it returned no results. When I ran through again yesterday, TinEye returned over four pages of results. If I had it to do over again, would I? Yes - Michael Fidler
The people you refer do don't join "just to slam" someone, they are concerned members of the online art community that want to see real art appreciated and fake art or photos being passed off as drawings revealed for what they really are. Artists such as Brian Duey, Armin Mersmann, Paul Lung, Zindy Nielsen, and many others do not receive the appreciation they deserve because of scams like this. - canadianmaple09
canadianmaple09, the worthiness of your motives notwithstanding (and they are worthy, definitely) you could definitely have approached Michael completely differently by say, giving him the benefit of the doubt rather than attacking in a highly accusatory tone. - Chieze Okoye
When you've seen these same pictures posted multiple times by people that just find them on the internet and claim they are pencil drawings, when it has already been established on multiple occasions that they are not, the "benefit of the doubt" approach seems a little too generous. People post these images and claim they're drawings to get views for their own site or blog or page or whatever it is they post it on. It's wrong and it needs to be stopped. - canadianmaple09
I can understand that, but you should also keep in mind that everyone is not as well-versed in the issue as you are. All I'm saying is that you would probably be more effective in this case if you weren't setting this up as a us-vs.-them, "must destroy with the validity my argument!" attitude when talking to a guy who's been actively having a discussion on the issue in what seems to me (having been around when he first posted the images and the follow up thread and what not) to be good faith. - Chieze Okoye
Look at his first comment here. People clearly thought he drew them. He doesn't set the record straight. He also claims that they "are actually pencil drawings" and that "I have more drawings too." Later he claims that you need to look at them closer to see they are drawings and that he will "post the originals". Once again, this makes it sound like they are his. This follows the same... more... - canadianmaple09
Greg and Chieze, thanks for your support. I really appreciate it. @canadianmaoles09, for what it’s worth, I share your concerns about giving proper attribution when sharing also. However, I admit that I'm more conscious of it now than I was at the time of this post. Nevertheless, I have never taken credit for anybody's work here other than my own! - Michael Fidler
BTW, I didn't realize it before, but I just noticed that you're new here too. I hope you like it so far and spend more time here. IMO, friendfeed is still the best thing around! - Michael Fidler
I would probably qualify as an image analysis expert, but there's no way to prove that online. One thing we can do is look at color. Even though the images are black and white, they're actually RGB images, meaning they contain cyan magenta and yellow. If you look at the image of the rhino you have posted then look at the photo of the rhino at the photographer's site you can see they both... more... - erik weisz

Perhaps I'm high on coffee, but I just think this team is going to come out and hammer the ball today. I just hope the crowd does their part. Interesting article in the globe this morning on how apathetic Fenway can be during the playoffs. Saw that first hand in the '04 and '07 ALCS'. - Kyle

My kids are watching the game thru the eyes of MLB PowerPros on the Wii from 2006. They are confused by Torii Hunter on the Twins, Kazmir on the Rays...but what a great way for them to learn players around the league. Of course that was the year Ortiz had 54 homers too. - Adam Cohen

@Kyle: Agreed. The thing is, I don't know about 99% of the Red Sox tweeters this year. Not nearly as much fun. - Bryan Person
i'm with doug - you guys need your own room. starting another thread for you now. - Jim Storer
@bryan I'm thinking Plain Wayne had a few helmetless moments he might regret #asimplecanoe - Doug Haslam
@DougH: But @Paisano is a Yankee dude, right? - Bryan Person
I wish FF allowed you to have tiered conversations so I can bucket my motorcycle helmet talk. - Kyle
@Bryan Yes, but the blocking was a bit harsh-- we were Utterli buddies, so it's not like he thinks I'm a jerk (most of the time) - Doug Haslam
@DougH: Interesting that Wayne was from Canada, DEtroit, and Atlanta. #ASimpleCanoe - Bryan Person
@kyle Just start another thread.... like the Bryan & Kevin Snugglefest Thread I started. - Jim Storer
@kyle will FF get plug pulled anyway and get absorbed by FaceBorg? - Doug Haslam
@doug @jim I did enough today pledging my help to Twitter, I can't do everything for struggling social networks. - Kyle
OK, is this one of you guys? http://twitter.com/cbbucknor - Doug Haslam
@DougH: Not me--and probably not one of us. If it had been, you would have seen @references to us. - Bryan Person
@doug, saw that last night, classic. Wonder why @tedshead hasn't made a playoff appearance. - Kyle
@Bryan Very true. The quality of the #redsox stream plummeted between last October & this April. - Derek Peplau
@Doug: Did you hear that @CBBucknor's Wikipedia page was "vandalized" and locked down? - Bryan Person
I think @tedshead is keeping alow profile after the recent news stories - Doug Haslam
@Bryan-- I know-- that was awesome. (re: Bucknor's Wikipedia page) - Doug Haslam
@Kyle: Be ready for your interview tomorrow. We'll get into the nitty-gritty of your plan to save Twitter. - Bryan Person
@Bryan: The original version of the vandalism was the best. It just got really blue from there. - Derek Peplau
FYI, THIS is the big inning for the Sox - Kyle
Derek-- got a screen shot of the original? I think I have seen it-- basically makes references to him being blind and blowing last night's game - Doug Haslam
@Kyle: Gotta smell the opportunity and pounce. Agreed. - Bryan Person
@Doug: Neither of those blown call led to a run, but it did cost Lester some extra pitches. - Bryan Person
AAARRRGGGGHHHH - Kyle
@Kyle: Which dodgy angle are you watching this game from on MLB.tv? - Bryan Person
i don't know why they have that balls & strikes pitching graphic. the umps aren't even close to calling it like the graphic. - Jim Storer
@Derek: Tears in my eyes with hysterical laughter. Helen Keller speaking appearance! - Bryan Person
@Kyle: Yyyeaaah, I'm going to have to go ahead and sort of...disagree with you there... - Derek Peplau
@Bryan Yeah, it was a masterstroke. It took some of the sting out of last night's hairball. - Derek Peplau
@derek remember, I'm 5 minutes behind everyone else since I don't have TBS/TNT so watching on MLB. @bryan, watching four angles currently. - Kyle
Amica strike zone much more accurate than pitchtrax - Jon Michaeli from Viigo
@derek I saw a slightly different version, but about the same. Is this the first game where the batter charges the ump instead of the mound? - Doug Haslam
There's another notable Bucknor umpire from the West Indies, though I think he's now retired. He's Steve Bucknor, and he was a leading umpire of international cricket matches. http://images.google.com/images... - Bryan Person
@kyle: Oh, didn't realize that...tuning in late. Still, I was thinking to myself before it started, "bats still silent tonight". - Derek Peplau
Boston boys, I'm in town 10/17-22. ALCS watching party (oh yeah, I went there) - Kyle
@Kyle: Oh, really? You going straight from Vegas > Boston? - Bryan Person
@Kyle: Will you have access to cable while in Boston? I think they have it up there. - Bryan Person
@bryan, yeah, leave for Vegas on Wednesday, then right to Boston for a @breakingpoint trade show for the week. - Kyle
@kyle-- you know I'm at Game 5 (assuming they advance) - Sect 32, GS Row 8. You'll be at Blogworld? I arrive Fri AM - Doug Haslam
@doug--yeah, at BWE until Saturday. Have tix right now to ALCS Game 3 right now though (knocking on wood). - Kyle
Got booted from the bedroom - Jon Michaeli from Viigo
@kyle i have tix to ALCS game three on 10/19 also. *knocking* - Jim Storer
@jim Nice! - Kyle
@kyle where are your seats? - Jim Storer
@kyle, @jim either of you going to Game 5? - Doug Haslam
@Kyle, @Jim: I do *not* have tix to ALCS Game 3. - Bryan Person
@Doug: Nor Game 5. - Bryan Person
I have (had) tickets to game 3 but had to sell them, I couldn't make it, I tried. REALLY good seats too :-( - Jason Kelly
This ED commercial with the guy slapping himself five in the mirror is ridiculous. - Bryan Person
@jim my buddy works for ESPN, so we'll be in a box or down in section 30 row 8 I think it is. Sat there for the 04 and 07 LCS. - Kyle
@doug not at the moment, but might have some if it starts to heat up. - Jim Storer
@Bryan I'm going to Game 5 if there is one at Fenway, even if I have to canoe all the f****ing way #asimplecanoe - Doug Haslam
ok - let's get some offense going... group WAVE - Jim Storer
Wave! - Jason Kelly
@doug @bryan really wish we all could have been there for the canoe story - Kyle
@Jim: I refuse to do the Wave, unless it's Google Wave (and in trying it for the first time about 15 minutes ago, it was also underwhelming) - Bryan Person
Whoever is posting on this account is a funny man. http://twitter.com/cbbuckn... - Jason Kelly
RFF: @Jim: I refuse to do the Wave, unless it's Google Wave (and in trying it for the first time about 15 minutes ago, it was also underwhelming) - Kyle
@bryan - i understand. this inning is sponsored by you. - Jim Storer
@Kyle: I'll fill you in tomorrow. It was equal parts amusing, annoying, and very sad. A vet who obviously has been through way too much s**t. - Bryan Person
@Kyle: RFF! - Love it! - Bryan Person
@bryan thought you would like RFF - Kyle
ok, i'll bit... RFF? - Jim Storer
@Kyle: The RFF from the KFF, as it were. - Bryan Person
@jim Retweet FriendFeed.... - Kyle
@Jim: Kyle just RFF'd my post about the Wave :) - Bryan Person
Did Adam run off to stare at his cheerleader poster again? - Bryan Person
@bryan you earned another RFF with that one, but I'm not going to go overboard - Kyle
i got the intent, just couldn't figure out the acronym in my current state - Jim Storer
@kyle Seconded Bryan-- he was obnoxious, drunk/damaged but earnest at the same time. We were (mostly) polite but then I started Tweeting his comments (I'm a jackass) and one of our companions was more overt in his eye-rolling. - Doug Haslam
@doug Hey, what happens in Missouri, stays in Missouri (I know, I married a girl from STL). - Kyle
@kyle but you're in TX - Doug Haslam
@doug they kicked her out of Missouri and since I'm not a cousin of Matt Damon they pushed me out of the Commonwealth. - Kyle
@DougH: Garth wanted to jettison Plain Wayne. I insisted we give him a pass. He was ultimately harmless. And that's because he hadn't brought his weapon with him. He had killed more than 300 men ... "unofficially." - Bryan Person
I am officially declaring war on all Beatles covers. If you subscribe to Mojo Mag as I do you'll have got to this point as well. the "All You Need is Love" ad? Die. - Doug Haslam
Um, there's still a game on, right? ;-) - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
I'm not overly confident if this becomes a battle of the bullpens. Beckett has been economical, though, so he has at least one more inning. - Bryan Person
I'm feeling less than confident. Boost my spirits folks! - Kyle
Kyle: Can you throw up a picture of you wearing the hat in a separate thread? Might be what turns the tide here. - Bryan Person
Sox are hitting Weaver better and better with each inning. Next inning is going to be a 5 run inning for the Sox. - Jason Kelly
@Jason: I like your confidence! - Bryan Person
The series is sponsored by Blackberry? Interesting. Never seen them do that type of buy before. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
@bryan, great point!, I hadn't been wearing my hat. It is now on! - Kyle
@Bryan Got to have it, no one else is doing it - Jason Kelly
@Carissa Maybe if Jacoby steals a base everyone in America gets a Bberry - Doug Haslam
@jason, that is what I needed! - Kyle
Well that and some Heidi Watney - Kyle
@Jim, you better have your game attire on. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
Wait, when did Vlad stop swinging at pitches? - Jim Storer
@Jim When Vlad turned 82 years old. His bat slowed a little - Doug Haslam
Boy fell asleep on the couch. I promise to wake him up if the redsox stop sucking - Doug Haslam
@Bryan Don't knock the poster. On the laptop now so I can keep up, couldn't find an iPod touch client that refreshed comments well on FF. - Adam Cohen
When you say boy do you mean me? Thinking about lying down. #badidea - Jim Storer
Walking guerrero is a crime - Jon Michaeli from Viigo
@Adam FF is a bucket of mobile fail-- don;t think they thought about mobile too much in building it - Doug Haslam
By the way, where's Aaron Strout? - Bryan Person
@Doug: And given that they're now owned by Facebook, they probably *won't* build a mobile app now. - Bryan Person
@Jim- no, my Boy. And if I stop moving I will sleep for 3 days. Bryan saw me, he knws wheere I'm at - Doug Haslam
@Doug: I hope you at least got some chocolate chip cookies on the flight home this morning? - Bryan Person
Come on Beckett, put your pants back on. - Jason Kelly
Not. ready. for. bullpen. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
Can't afford to waste this start. - Derek Peplau
@Bryan-- no! not on the morning flight. Bastids - Doug Haslam
@Doug that's a big limitation, don't you think? How else could I digest a huge firehouse of useless crap if I can only do that on one type of device? - Adam Cohen
how about a ground ball - Jim Storer
@Adam what huge firehose of info/data (crap)? I thought you were on AT&T - Doug Haslam
@Adam: Ha! Yup ... I thought it was OK through the iPhone web browser, but then again, I wasn't in a chat like this. - Bryan Person
Beckett pitch count? - Doug Haslam
Doug: I'm going to say still only in 80s. - Bryan Person
Doug: this next one will be pitch 88. - Derek Peplau
@doug 88 - Kyle
Lost track. He was 64 through 5. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
I think it's time for the Angels to run themselves out of an inning. - Bryan Person
88 in 7th inning? not bad - Doug Haslam
could use a DP right here. - Adam Cohen
Mikey L is my MVP for this game so far. - Jason Kelly

Beckett might have a case- Napoli didn;t get out of the way-- but he's not gonna win - Doug Haslam
At least Beckett is hitting something - Kyle
Napoli not only did not get out of the way, he leaned into it. Bad call, but non other than C...B... BUCKNOR! - Jason Kelly
@adam spoken like a man with an autographed Patriots cheerleader poster. - Jim Storer
think we need to keep this a one run game. - Jim Storer
101 pitches for Beckett. Quite reasonable, but this is it for him. - Bryan Person
btw-- Buck MArtinez, shut yer yap - Doug Haslam
Uh-oh. - Bryan Person
a;sodifja;oiegh;oiehg;lifng;oaigja;oigja;erogijaergo;ij - Kyle

@Doug I think the phrase you were looking for: "Shut the Buck up." - Adam Cohen
I wouldn't feel so bad if the bats weren't acting like Mo Vaughn in the playoffs right now. - Kyle
Suddenly best of five is making me a lot more anxious. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
@Jim Lisa was working at an event booth next to the cheerleaders. Turns out one of them works for Accenture. She also got a signed poster for all three boys. - Adam Cohen
Ssssoooo....our season hinges on who again in game 3? I don't like Door #1 or Door #2. - Derek Peplau
Dice-K will save us - Doug Haslam
There's two innings of baseball left. Let's not talk Game 3 juuuust yet. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
@Carissa I hate to say it, but I think the Sox players checked out 3 weeks ago, so 3 more innings they won't even notice - Jason Kelly
@Doug THAT's a phrase no one thought would be uttered in 2009. - Adam Cohen
@adam by three boys you mean me, Colin and Derek right? - Jim Storer
So...what's George Lopez up to these days? #HisFatherIsTheDistrictAttorney! #YoureRiskingAPatientsLife! - Derek Peplau
I'm putting on my rally....blanket. *yawn* - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
I'm putting on my lucky chaps - Kyle
And speaking of which, is Frank Calliendo now living in a van down by the river? - Derek Peplau
@Jason: Where's your optimism? - Bryan Person
I think he left in the sixth inning. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
If A-Rod can do it, so can we!! - Kyle
Pinch hit for Gonzalez?Maybe, but with who? - Bryan Person
@Bryan you guys and the Sox killed it. (still scoring 5 here though) - Jason Kelly
@jim Um, sure, as far as you know. - Adam Cohen
Oliver as a setup man for the Angels. Kills me. - Bryan Person

@Adam My birthday is in November. I'll expect you boys will be chipping in for my Rally Snuggie. ;-) - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
Do NOT, I repeat do NOT go to espn.com right now. - Kyle
@Kyle: He was questionable earlier today. That's a nice upgrade! - Bryan Person
@Carissa: Mine, too. (11/3) - Bryan Person
Pinch hitting ... with Lowrie? Really? - Bryan Person
@bryan Just FYI, that is my prediction, not based on fact. I just need something to smile about. - Kyle
Jed, stop WATCHING the game and start PLAYING in it. - Jason Kelly
Oh for crying....that's it, just crying. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
great move putting in Lowrie... - Kyle
WTH? - Kyle
I'd like to understand the rationale behind bringing in a pinch hitter like lowrie in this situation. New pitcher - give gonzalez a chance - Jon Michaeli from Viigo
@Bryan. November rocks (I'm 11/29). - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
why can't we have someone like this going in game three - http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb... - Jim Storer
2 out rally! Rally caps everyone! - Doug Haslam
I changed hats, FYI - Kyle
Wait.. what just happened? Why is a Sox player running down the line and still standing on the base...? Shouldn't he be walking to the dugout, what is this? A hit?! - Jason Kelly
@Jason CB Bucknor asleep at the switch, apparently - Doug Haslam
My new hat has powers beyond reason here. - Kyle
@Jim: When it's 27 degrees tomorrow with snow flurries in Denver, Pedro will realize he's no longer sitting under his mango tree. - Bryan Person
@Carissa I seriously looked really hard online for about 30 seconds and couldn't find a Red Sox branded snuggie. I see huge market potential! Imagine the merchandising. Pats snuggies at Foxboro. Angels snuggies with build in sleeves for thundersticks. Steelers snuggies in terrible yellow... - Adam Cohen
Did y'all bring your sun glasses? You are about to see the Laser Show! - Jason Kelly
@Adam The Terrible Snuggie! - Doug Haslam
@Adam We have a partnership in the making. Pro-Snuggies. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
@Doug: What do you think Wayne's saying right about now? #ASimpleCanoe - Bryan Person
@Doug: Have you been up all day? Any sleeping on the plane? You've gotta be a mess. - Bryan Person
@Bryan He's still on the same tool-- He just got out of the marines, and he's waiting for his plane ticket. Mastery Gunner Sergeant, but just "Plain Wayne". If I look like that when I'm 46 kill me - Doug Haslam
No more predictions for me. - Jason Kelly
@Bryan little snooze on the plane-- then useless at the office - Doug Haslam
5...0...you were THAT close. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
Kyle: Changing hats might not be enough. Time to do something drastic. - Bryan Person
Did we lose Jim? - Bryan Person
nope... just looking for Red Sox branded Snuggies. Never mind me... - Jim Storer
Bryan, I've changed EVERYTHING now - Kyle
Watching Friday Night Lights on TV, game on the Mac. Liking the results of the former. - Kyle
Vin Scully's call from yesterday's Dodgers comeback. Starts with 2 outs, nobody on in the 9th: http://mlb.mlb.com/media... - Bryan Person
I really think we could sell Pats snuggies like hotcakes at a cold day at Gillette. - Adam Cohen
Bryan are you trying to pain my household that is split 50/50, Cardinals and Red Sox fans? - Kyle
@Adam Totally. Let's do it! - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
@Kyle: Ahh, sorry; forgot about that. This has not been a good 1st round on any fronts (Red Sox, Cardinals, Twins) - Bryan Person
@bryan My mother-in-law was so pained for Matt Holliday last night I was nearly brought to tears. Then I watched my 2004 World Series DVDs. - Kyle
Superstition kicking in. Stepping away from laptop. Changing seats. Finishing wine. Securing rally cap. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
@Kyle: I hadn't seen what happened. Just got through the Holliday play. "So ... a painful error," says Scully, after noting the ball had hit him "in the groin." - Bryan Person
Dear TBS: Nice job picking up Orsillo, but is it really that hard to find good color commentary? - Adam Cohen
@bryan I felt so bad for him, the guy is such a quality pro. - Kyle
Switching to scotch, I think that will help. - Kyle
@Carrisa have your people call my people - Adam Cohen
VMart sweet call with the pitch out! - Adam Cohen
Switched from one couch to the other, and Martinez throws out a runner. Good sign. - Bryan Person
Beat LAA...Beat LAA...Beat LAA - Kyle
Tweet of the night from @cbbucknor: "is hitting california screamin' with kendrick after the game. after that, boobies." (sorry, laughed out loud, worth sharing) - Adam Cohen
RFF: Tweet of the night from @cbbucknor: "is hitting california screamin' with kendrick after the game. after that, boobies." (sorry, laughed out loud, worth sharing) - Kyle
@Kyle (cc: @AdamCohen): an RFF of an RT - Bryan Person
@bryan, should I have done RFFRT? - Kyle
@Kyle: Oh, maybe. (BTW, bases loaded with Loretta up in replay). - Bryan Person
@Kyle: Scully actually didn't get that excited. - Bryan Person
OK, no one move couches again. I just moved and Youk hit a double. - Adam Cohen
@adam I'm not moving and inch - Kyle

@Kyle: Time to get ready for Sunday brunch. - Bryan Person
And....hope gone. Until game 3. Night folks. @Jim, great way to enjoy the game, nice idea. - Adam Cohen
Can't believe we're actually down 0-2. Still, I seem to remember coming back from worse odds. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
Girl woke up crying, said she had a bad dream...I told her it was real. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
G'nite, gents. It was a pleasure (except for the part where our team bitterly lost). Thx, Jim. - Carissa Caramanis O'Brien
@Carissa: That's right - like that confidence! Things turn around ... starting Sunday. - Bryan Person
G'night from NW Austin, TX. Don't lose hope! - Bryan Person

And the Trapper Keeper?
trapperkeeper3.JPG
I had tons of those!!! I get that "excited about going back to school" feeling just looking at it. - Lindsay
I had one in red. - Mary Carmen
oh yeah! - BEX
Hahah. YEP. - Rochelle
Dude. Trapper Keeper was life. - Akiva
I always wanted a new one. - Yolanda
The beginnings of my office supply fetish, I'm sure. Pens, pencils, folders for each class, narrow rule paper. Those were the easy days and we never knew it. - (Curtis) Alan Jackson
yes, I had several, and love how I kept everything in order! - magali
I refused to get a Trapper Keeper because *everyone* had one. Instead I got the off-brand ones and would get a sticker and write "BINDER" on the spine. Yes. 5th grade me was HILARIOUS. - Anika
Didn't have a trapper keeper. Also had a knock-off. Didn't really see what the damned diff was though..LOL - Rahsheen
Anika, OMG, you're such a creative rebel! OMG OMG OMG SOOOOOOOO COOL. - Akiva
Those were awesome. I probably owned like 10 while growing up. - Brett Kelly from iPhone
One year, I found some MEGA TRAPPER KEEPER that was also some off-brand but it was twice as large, twice as nerdy, and I instantly became twice the virgin. School ruled. [crying] - Akiva
I never had a Trapper Keeper. I was very picky about the way rings in notebooks looked and didn't like the Trapper Keeper rings. I always chose a plain white binder with the clear front that I could slip a sheet of paper into. I then bought several 8.5"x11" sheets of printed paper (like scrapbook paper) to slip in the front as decoration. - Rochelle
I had one once, but it only lasted about 2 months. I was rough on a binder. *edited* Still am. - Ha3rvey (on hiatus)
I remember the first Vietnamese Nerd who showed up with a D-ring binder. It was like someone discovering fire and showing it off. - Akiva
I've always liked these. Even today I have a bad habit of buying leather portfolios with way too many pockets. - Rob H.
I would get one and never use it. I'd put paper in the folders label them for each class and proceed to not use it the rest of the school year. Total waste of money but I had to have it. - DB, Lil LB's Dad
I had that exact one in purple! - TheDiva Rockin
Can't you just feel the vinyl separating from those brads in the spine? And smell it? And hear the velcro rip? Man that brings back memories.... - Lindsay
@Lindsay: The sound of velcro separating makes me feel uneasy. - Brandon
Really? What started that phobia for you? I like that sound. :) - Lindsay
The all black ones would get sold out first. Brandon - I am TOTALLY allergic to the sound of velcro, too!! - Mona Nomura
I never had one. I've never been the most organized person. Maybe its because I never had one? *ponders* - Derrick
I wanted one of those so bad. I don't think I ever did get one. - Trish Haley
@Lindsay: I don't know when it started to happen, but now I don't feel alone bc Mona feels the same. - Brandon
I had some of these too. I still liked the Pee Chee's a little more? Good memories! - Michael Fidler
I get this uneasy feeling at the pit of my stomach and a not so good tingling up and down my vertebra which finishes with the shakes. I think i am really really allergic. - Mona Nomura
My friend gets that way when she hears markers on white boards or paper. - Yolanda
I think mine was purple. LOL! Loved it! - Gabrielle
Thats exactly how it makes me feel, Mona. - Brandon
I heart you for this, Derrick. New Trapper Keepers every year were the highlight of back-to-school prep. /nerd - Kisha from BuddyFeed
YES!!! This brings back memories. I remember getting a new one every year. I was the anal organized type so I absolutely loved these. It made each new school year extra special :) - Grant Gochnauer
My red Trapper Keeper had punk band logos all over it. I was such a little Sk8r Grrl back then. lol - Leslie Poston
I would doodle them on the Trapper Keeper and on the white areas and soles of my Chucks and Vans... no wonder I can't do math to this day... - Leslie Poston
That time in my life was also my first Sharpie experience. I never did decide whether I preferred the permanence of the Sharpie of the heady smell of the thick black Magic Marker (also, too many comments in a row, sorry!) - Leslie Poston
We always had the "just as good" kind (to quote my father) with names like "Keeper Trapper" and "Trooper Keeper." - Noah Belson
I liked the thought of them but they were way too pricey for our budget. Plus I hated how everyone else's looked like crap after the first few weeks: the white edging would tear away from the plastic at the corners and hurt like a mofo if it slid underneath your fingernails. - FFing Enigma

I'm really liking Google Reader. Once I get organized more, I can see how useful it's going to be.
Valeria, I know a few folks who can help. Google Reader rocks. - Louis Gray
Google Reader may not be as flashy as other aggregation tools, but it is one of the best tools around. I have over a thousand RSS feeds flowing through Reader. It is one of the only ways to parse mountains of data and glean real information. It gets a little trippy when you start processing RSS feeds of RSS feeds. For example, I saw your Friendfeed post first through Reader. - Lorin Olsen
I like Google Reader too, However, I like Feedly in Firefox (which is effectively a Google Reader skin), even more. It gives some great social media sharing options right from the page, that Google Reader doesn't have, like being able to directly comment into Friendfeed. - Ian May
Google Reader and FeedDemon. Both have strengths. I use and like both. - Martha
Ian: have to agree with your comments on Feedly. Have been using this for about a month now it's a very useful tool esp when it comes to sharing and being able to see the friendfeed mentions. - Peter du Toit (S.Africa)
Peter, I've gotten into the habit of looking at the bottom of the article now to see if it's been submitted to Friendfeed already, so I can help cut down on dupes - Ian May
thank you for the suggestions - I had seen some conversations and traffic from feedly, I'll have to check it out! - Valeria Maltoni
I find it easier to add blogs on GReader and keeping track of new posts is a breeze. Thought you'd all like to know :) - Valeria Maltoni

seriously useful. - Calvin Ayre
I haven't tested this but, how exactly are you determining audio file types, just using the file extension. If so there is a work around with a simple file rename, an example would be if you change an .mp3 to a .pdf and let people rename it once it becomes local on their machine. EDIT: This workaround would also allow video to be transferred. - NOT THE CRICKET

Something Is Very Wrong with Bit.ly’s Click Counts - http://bhc3.wordpress.com/2009...
I would assume that any services (like FriendFeed) which expand the link would count as hits as well. - Brandon Titus
That shouldn't, 'coz a HEAD request is very different from a GET - Yuvi
I suppose caching could be playing a role. - Dave Winer
A little too early for this :P Sorry! http://blog.bit.ly/post... It's made up of mostly "direct" traffic. - Brandon Titus
Maybe they are hits from web crawler bots (not HEAD requests) that WordPress is filtering out but Bit.ly isn't - Sam Webb
There are SO many ways that could go wrong. Content caching, duplicate hits from the same users, etc, etc. And aren't WordPress.com's counts rather on the conservative side of things anyway? - Joel Bennett
Brandon - thanks for that link. Presumably, the HEAD requests aren't in there now. - Hutch Carpenter
Sam - you think there's some other technology now querying these bit.ly URLs? Interesting. I wonder if it's bots related. Gonna lelave a comment on their blog post, link to this discussion. - Hutch Carpenter
I would bet it's Bots not sure why WP is not counting them but bit.ly is. - Jeremy Arntz
Differences in statistics are universal. I run Sitemeter, Lijit and Google Analytics on the blog. They never agree, and they all differ from the raw stats from the logs. SiteMeter is always the lowest number, but it gives good detail per visitor. - Louis Gray
Which is so funny. A layman such as myself would expect it to be straightforward - how many times was the content called for display in a browser. But there's a disconnect between "clicks" and "views". Bots, HEAD requests are an example of that. - Hutch Carpenter
I'm noticing quite a difference between bit.ly clicks and my Google Analytics numbers. I really would like to understand this stuff better. - Daniel Johnson, Jr.
Hutch, thanks for sharing this friendfeed post! Strange that this was not mentioned during the timoreilly webinar; maybe he is not aware of this issue... - Jeroen De Miranda
HEAD requests do not count towards bit.ly click counts. What you're seeing are requests for a particular bit.ly link where the requesting client does not follow the redirect to its final destination. As Twitter continues to grow, the number of bots and other folks consuming data is definitely increasing. You can see this in action if you post a bit.ly link to Twitter and watch the real-time clicks come in. Almost immediately you'll get about 10 hits. - Nathan Folkman
Thanks Nathan - perhaps related to the proliferation of various services tracking links on Twitter? - Hutch Carpenter
Why not try another URL shortener like http://tr.im and eliminate one of the variables. If it is still out of wack, it is probably Wordpress. If not, it's the URL shorteners. - Neill Adamson
Neill - wouldn't tr.im have the same bot issue? - Hutch Carpenter
The whole bot detection issue is definitely something we are both aware of and working on. We're also trying to help educate developers as well. For example, if you need to expand a bitly link, you really should be using our API, and not, as many do, requesting the bitly link and then parsing out the HTTP response headers or body. There's no way for us to know whether or not a requested bitly link was actually followed through to its destination - that's the big issue here in my opinion... - Nathan Folkman
Hutch - tr.im stats shows the breakup of bots vs human clicks in its analytics pages. The assumption here is that bot is well behaved and identifies itself as such. - Atul Arora
Thanks Atul. I'm a bit.ly fan, but I'll experiment with tr.im. - Hutch Carpenter
Goog analytics will not count clicks from twitter.com as uniques -- that's one reason goog counts are lower than bit.ly. I dont know how traffic from twitter clients looks to goog, but i've been told that some clicks from clients are under-counted. - Adrian Chan

I've written about Twitter passing WSJ/NYT in traffic, how we use Twitter for journalism, Twitter's tech partnerships, Twitter as a world changing technology platform, how Twitter pays my rent, how Twitter can be used for competitive intelligence, I wrote the SHIT out of last week's replies fiasco. Guess how many of 47 Twitter employees follow me.
it's not about me feeling entitled to be followed, almost every person there follows like 150 people. it's about a. whether they use the tool the way many of the rest of us do and thus know how best to use it (there's awesome potential) - Marshall Kirkpatrick
and b. whether they even care. - Marshall Kirkpatrick
I'm feeling sad about the future of twitter b/c I worry that the company is just going to dumb it down for mainstream users when it used to be this huge open platform with SO much potential for innovation. even if they didn't want to use it that way, it's tragic if they muzzle it so that mainstream users don't get scared away. twitter is supposed to be world changing tech, that can be frightening, but it's important - Marshall Kirkpatrick
someone please tell me I'm wrong about this so I can go back to being really excited about Twitter again! - Marshall Kirkpatrick

I wish I could. I've been feeling similarly in recent weeks. I've even started to wonder if Twitter Inc understands Twitter. ;) - phil baumann
My guess would be that they way they see it, they have their heads down driving towards ubiquity and establishing Twitter as a standard platform. Building market share, so to speak. Everything that doesn't contribute directly to the number of users on the platform can wait. - Ken Sheppardson
Ken, that sounds accurate and really dangerous. - Marshall Kirkpatrick
Ken's probably right. - phil baumann
Marshall. Why don't we all decide to start ignoring them. Maybe that will teach them. They get too much free publicity for a poor job done in the past months ;-) - Alexander van Elsas
Brad, that's a thoughtful comment for sure. To put it in context, though, hiding messages due to fear of information overload **on Twitter** is a clear move away from open, in my mind. - Marshall Kirkpatrick
Brad - kinda like duct tape: can be used in ways never originally intended. - phil baumann
do we need to relegate Twitter to the yet-another-mass-market source and find the next thing that allows power-consumers to thrive? I.E. what folks are now using FriendFeed for? - bear (aka Mike Taylor)
I don't know what Twitter Inc hopes to become. I think it's service would be as facilitator. i just don't know what it should facilitate. So far it looks like they're facilitating things for celebs. - phil baumann
Marshall - why does it matter if they follow you? How many of the people who have subscribed to your work, retweeted your tweets, etc. do you follow back? Or are you concerned they aren't even paying attention to what's being written about them? - phil baumann
Brad - good points I think. The response to the @ deal was pretty bad, though. And really, it is a loss of important opportunities to connect with new people on the service. - Marshall Kirkpatrick
They don't use the tool like we do. When the @replies flap happened, I checked @ev and @biz's accounts. Combined they'd only posted three tweets in 24 hours. - Aaron B. Hockley
Hey Marshall, why don't you start by following back the other 7,000 people on your list? yah, there ya go! ;^) - Michael Bailey
Phil, yes that is the case. I'm worried about them not listening to what their community of users says about the service. - Marshall Kirkpatrick
to me it appears that all twitter inc cares about is their exit, not the stability or scalability of their product nor the thoughtful analysis of most anyone interested in offering advice - mike "glemak" dunn
As I understand it, it's as much an engineering issue as it is a marketing/usability one. - Steve O'Hear
Steve, except that a number of the twitter devs also did not know that the @reply change had happened and advocated internally to reverse it - bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Marshall, your point is well taken. I'm not adverse to asymmetrical follows; I think it's prudent if track is used in connection with it. I'm with Ken here -- I think they're just in pedal-to-the-metal-build-market-share mode. This wouldn't bother me if they had one person -- one employee -- who had the task of interfacing with the community; representing twitter, engaging in conversation. I even offered to do it for free...they didn't notice. :) In some circles, it's called community management. :) - Karoli
:) Michael, fwiw, I follow about 100 times more people than anyone who works at Twitter does. Karoli, that's a fair point. - Marshall Kirkpatrick
Marshall - I have the same concern. It doesn't appear that they're listening. It's ironic that they have a great platform to interface with their followers/fans but don't seem to in a creative, enthusiastic way. In fact, the recent communications seemed to have been sarcastic. - phil baumann
Marshall, yeah I see that. I think that everyone should use http://mobatalk.com since I'm just one guy doing it all by myself, debt up to my eyes, I care about our community, and nobody seems to care. - Michael Bailey
Not to change the subject, but can we talk about how in the same week Twitter messes with Replies, Tumblr launched another 'dumb down' feature called "Tumblarity" that seems to do the same thing: and that is discourage conversation and encourage people to pump out 'viral' content that appeals to the widest/lowest denominator. - Mark Schoneveld
Michael - I'll have to tweet that out. - phil baumann
It's really funny when everyone thought that "Tom" made myspace - what a bunch of marketing crap - here's a guy who really is doing it by himself and there's nobody talking about it. - Michael Bailey
Thanks @phil - Michael Bailey
sorry Marshall, I didn't mean to come in here and hijack your conversation - leaving now.... - Michael Bailey
Marshall: Twitter has been like this for a long time. Why do you think I'm pushing Friendfeed so hard for the past 16 months? - Robert Scoble
Scoble, you aren't even "on" friendfeed - I've tried having a conversation w/you there. You just pump feeds into it. - Michael Bailey
I'm wondering what Twitter, Inc. would look like if it had FF peeps running things. Just a speculative question. - phil baumann
I do think that they are strategically NOT listening to the tech press. Which is actually pretty smart to some extent. That way they focus on the bigger world and don't worry about getting on TechCrunch or in RWW. - Robert Scoble
Robert, they don't have to listen to the tech press. However, they ought to be listening to their community. Proactively. - Karoli
I agree w Robert, it would be smarter to NOT listen to the fishbowl - Michael Bailey
Michael, you mean except for Scoble's 21000 comments and 18000 likes on friendfeed? - Christopher Galtenberg
Christopher, no that's not what I mean at all. - Michael Bailey
Michael: what the hell are you talking about? I'm here almost all day long and have TONS of conversations with people. - Robert Scoble
Anyway, back to valuable points, like Marshall's - Christopher Galtenberg
Perhaps NOW you are here (I don't come around often much anymore) - it's not important. No arguments needed. - Michael Bailey
i agree with scoble....i have been moving to friendfeed because it a) lets me piece the conversation about my company together and b) has an infrastructure that actually works. if you could get all your twitter followers to friendfeed, why would you even need twitter? - Crackle
Scalability and performance had to be central to their decision making. Removing features (@) doesn't make sense. You've got to wonder why they didn't go down the path that Jive took and look to move toward virtualization technology. A partnership with Amazon should be a no brainer since Bezos is on the board. Not enough cash maybe? - Kim Feraday
Michael: it's funny. You only have commented here 33 times. Who the hell are you to tell me that I don't have conversations here? - Robert Scoble
Thanks Christopher, next time just punch me in the face. - Michael Bailey
Twitter's advantage is only the number of people already signed up. It's a subset of friendfeed. - Brent Logan
Robert's got a great point about listening to the tech crowd. I just get the sense that Twitter may not be leading the service a path that maximizes what Twitter is worth (if anything). What's Twitter's vision? - phil baumann
Bait is bait, Robert. You bit. conversation derailed. one of my fundamental objections to the flat thread is how easily a thread can be hijacked. - Karoli
"Hey Robert - are you up for some beta testing in about 10 days or so? April 6" - that's the only one I was talking about. - Michael Bailey
Phil: And again, I repeat...Twitter doesn't have to listen to the techies. It *does* need to listen to the community, interact, and respond, proactively. - Karoli
Karoli: yeah, I'm thinking of blocking Michael. He's obviously an asshole to say something like that. So I missed his message. Geesh. - Robert Scoble
Twitter is bigger, faster, and more high profile than anything the management team has done before, and their own personal celebrity seems to have become the growth engine instead of the users behavior and ideas. New users is fine, but retention is going to be critical to be valuable. I think they need to say no to a few PR invitations and possibly and adult supervisor to bring them back to reality. Maybe that's already in the works... - Nancy King
Karoli - whatever, but before you do, take notice of what a "closed loop" you are making this seem like. No wonder nobody wants to come in here. - Michael Bailey
Karoli - agree about the listening to community. Not necessarily act on what users think they want, but listen at some level. At least not alienate those who might be useful to their growth. - phil baumann
It's all great that Ev and Biz built something successful, but I think it's time they hand it off to some folks who can manage it properly. - Aaron B. Hockley
JFC, now I am an asshole? - Michael Bailey
oh snap, Marshall! My guess is 3. - jeannie christensen
MK, My experience is that my outlook is blasted as crazy or simply misunderstood. The platforms which will continue on the web are the ones which serve the Elite who control most things on this earth. Twitter as currently configured gives the little man too much power, and will be brought under control so as to be useful to a small number of people. - bill giltner
Michael: yes. When you call me out for missing a single direct message on a series of days when traffic was extraordinarily high you are an asshole. If you really cared you would have tried again. - Robert Scoble
Michael: especially when I have 18,000 comments here and you only have 33. - Robert Scoble
Marshall, Jeannie's back on track: how many are following you? Out of curiosity. - phil baumann
i suggest that friendfeed's comment strings have the "thumbs up" "thumbs down" feature similar to youtube to help keep the conversation on track and hide irrelevant comments - Crackle
great advice, shall I forward the emal and the DM that I followed up with? - Michael Bailey
ok Brad, sorry - I get a bit upset when people call me names. Sorry, let's move along. - Michael Bailey
From an engineering standpoint, I agree with the new @replies rules. - Michael Bailey
Brad: sorry for getting off topic here. - Robert Scoble
maybe most of us have less than 10k followers, but there are enough "big ones" now and that creates a lot of database pressure - Michael Bailey
TWO. that's the answer, that was first comment I left. Lead scientist and Rael D. are following me on Twitter, that is all. It's not about me, really, though. It's about listening and participating. - Marshall Kirkpatrick
Phil, lots of issues could have been headed off at the pass with someone talking to the community at large. Example: API throttling. Most users saw it as a power play rather than a necessity. What the twitter dudes don't get is that their community isn't just geeks and celebs. Lots of regular folk who are trying to get it. - Karoli from BuddyFeed
right, @tropical, yet those @ replies still had to be sorted through - Michael Bailey
Twitter's employees don't use Twitter the way we want them to, Marshall. Have you taken a look at any of their favorite tweet streams? There is a story there. :) - Louis Gray
Who thinks Twitter right now is being used the way it was originally intended (whatever that was)? - phil baumann
original intent? hell no, they didn't even know what it was going to be used for. - Michael Bailey
Marshall, they don't seem to be very plugged in. http://twitter.100twt.com/ - Dave Winer
I guess it really doesn't matter what we say in here, Twitter still has $55MM sitting around - Michael Bailey
Their original intent has evolved. that's what happens when you open something up to the community. No single developer can imagine every application for something this simple. Twitter+mobile=gamechanger. Still, there are lessons to learn from MySpace, Friendster, etc. that they don't appear to have learned. - Karoli
Until a real community ponies up some cash for membership, any new service is always going to be looking for an exit, and in doing so will fuck over the very community which made it what it is. - Michael Bailey
@Dave If I had to guess I'd say they are quite well plugged in, just not into the "tech crowd" or their own service. But they do quite well generating lots of talk in the world outside of Silicon valley. They've clearly made a choice to ignore this space. - Alexander van Elsas
I believe the future of micro-blogging as we know it today with all followers seeing all posts is only sustainable in a defined group. - Pierre-Armand Lalonde
Michael: see your friendfeed account, I'm talking to you on your other message. - Robert Scoble
just to be clear again: I'm just using this as a data point re listening to conversations about the twitter technology, not saying I'm in any way entitled to be followed by anyone. fwiw, though, I do have more followers than all but like 5 or 6 of the 47 people on twitter staff and I talk about twitter all the time. so community members find my tweets interesting, just not the ppl i'm tweeting about. - Marshall Kirkpatrick
Dave Winer: is that stream twitter employees only? could it be true that one of them doesn't know what friendfeed is? - Karoli
Karoli - and I guess that's what I'm trying to get at. If you invent something without knowing how far it might go (that is, not having a vision), how do you lead the venture? Is something like Twitter even "leadable"? Or will Twitter turn out to be too fundamental a service to be a business venture? - phil baumann
Marshall: you are not the only one to notice that Twitter's staff isn't participating in the community. Here's another test. Why is Oprah recommended to me to follow? Why isn't someone like Leo Laporte recommended? Or Dave Winer? Both have been using Twitter a lot longer. - Robert Scoble
Robert - it appears that Twitter's going for the celebrity market, whatever that'll look like. If that's the case, it doesn't seem to be a very creative vision. - phil baumann
Or, even worse, Twitter recommends to me to follow a cat, which is obviously a fake account. Why should I follow a cat and not Leo Laporte? - Robert Scoble
I was the 10,280th person to start using Twitter - recommend me - Michael Bailey
Phil, that's where community is the critical piece, which goes to Marshall's point. If they are not part of the community *they* created, should we worry? I think, yes, we should. Ignoring community means they don't understand their own product. - Karoli
Robert, the Twitter team is not following early adopters or the developer community. But the Twitter team does follow the celebs. It's clear what they want to be when they grow up. - Louis Gray
@Robert you know that is because they are on steroids. Growth is more important than user value. An old web 2.0 flaw ;-) - Alexander van Elsas
Twitter is simply the first [service] to offer this new [technology]. as Dan York says, we didn't know we were missing a medium until Twitter showed us. That's exciting. But it's silly to think we'll all use this one Web site in the future, or a different Web site like FriendFeed. Frustrated Twitterati can _now_ take their µblog to their own domain and start collecting followers there... more... - Brian Hendrickson
Ah, so the message is that the only community that matters is the celebrity crowd. ("in crowd" refrains ringing here...) - Karoli
Karoli: celebrities are important to generate hype. It's a brilliant strategy. But one that I think will ultimately leave Twitter wanting. - Robert Scoble
No any community that can gather 1M followers in week :) - Pierre-Armand Lalonde
Brian Hendrickson: Until they all talk to each other (and they don't right now), they're not relevant. I am a hard-core Identica denizen, but since there's no bridge from twitter back to identica, i don't use it as much. Why? Because the majority of those I call "community" are on Twitter. My social graph is there. - Karoli
oh, at the core it all boils down to OCD and Ego's - Michael Bailey
Robert, celebrities are a handful of people. There are millions using Twitter. They seriously cannot manage a handful of celebs and still listen to the larger community? - Karoli
At some point, people who are spending VC money will need to stop being looked at as "leaders" or "visonaries" and we'll need to start talking about people who are actually making this medium pay-off. - Michael Bailey
Karoli: well, they do have other things to do too like make their servers work. It's impressive that they've been able to keep the service mostly up and running. - Robert Scoble
Robert, my point (and it will sound self-serving but I mean it in a much more general way), is that out of 47 employees, not one is tasked with monitoring and interfacing with the community. That strikes me as poor business. - Karoli
@Karoli Twitter execs don't need to follow or listen to anyone as their service grows like crazy without any effort on their side. It's a short term winning strategy, but severely flawed as pointed out here. Question is do they really care? Evidence seems to be pointing towards "don't care" - Alexander van Elsas
Alexander: agree. - Karoli
Alexander - it does appear they don't care. Which begs the question: why do we care? :) - phil baumann
@Karoli my self-serving counterpoint would be something like "I spent 11,000 hours developing a system based on the community feedback, and now nobody cares" so I don't blame Twitter for NOT listening. - Michael Bailey
the "community" is real quick to say things like "follow your passion" or "don't give up" and yet when someone actually sticks it out and makes the technology work, those same people are nowhere to be found. - Michael Bailey
@Karoli there is a bridge http://tw2omb.singpolyma.net/ and my software has the client feature but i'm revamping it at the moment, and I believe identi.ca/evan is working on it for Laconica - Brian Hendrickson
Just because they are not following doesn't mean they are not listening. There are plenty of way to mine the data without having a huge following list. - WoH: Professor MOTHRA
I care because in essence I have always felt Twitter was a GREAT service. That feeling is disappearing fast now that I am forced to pay attention to 95% spam/traffic account following notifications. Takes away all the fun in discovering new people. I will be forced to mark Twitter e-mail notifications as spam, and that is a FAIL for what used to be a great service. - Alexander van Elsas
Michael, I understand the frustration. But twitter has the user base to justify some modicum of community management. - Karoli
@Karoli agreed on the user base, but mixing their technology with the ego-serving attitude of a vocal-minority doesn't work out well. - Michael Bailey
Alexander - ditto - phil baumann
Like I said in another thread, Twitter is evolving. They're evolving into a finely tuned organism optimized to add users at the fastest possible rate with the smallest possible footprint and the minimum amount of engineering effort and infrastructure investment. - Ken Sheppardson
WorldofHiglet actions speak louder than words. Not once has Twitter demonstrated that they had the first clue what the community at large was doing or how they were using the service, nor have they indicated that they care. - Karoli
@karoli, those are the 47 Twitter employees in the article that came out last week. And you can tell what they're tuned into by what they talk about, same as anyone else. They don't really talk about much, themselves, they aren't even conversing. I don't think they're following celebs, I don't think they're following anyone. That's just how it looks from reading the conversation. - Dave Winer
@davewiner it's astounding that one of them doesn't know what friendfeed is. - Karoli
@brad_king I could build that, no problem. - Michael Bailey
Here's another bit of data. I did two of these at the same time, one for the people of the NYT on Twitter and the other for the people of Twitter on Twitter. The Times peoplel discovered my thing within 5 minutes (they noticed when the bot followed them) and they were talking about it immediately, and exchanging theories on what it was. As far as I can tell, the Twitter folk don't yet know we're listening to them. - Dave Winer
@karoli I know lots of people that do not know what Friendfeed is. That is a Silicon valley attitude ;-) - Alexander van Elsas
Dave - that seems to tell us something. So, are they not listening with a purpose/strategy, or just plain old not listening? - phil baumann
@Brad of course, none of this is rocket science, hell even rocket science itself isn't that difficult - I'm agreeing with you that those features in an app would be beneficial. Be warned however, that the "basics of usability" will be trumped if it doesn't readily serve one's ego. - Michael Bailey
Knowing human nature, Phil, it's probably the latter. It probably never occurred to them to listen. - Dave Winer
Whereas the Times hires people whose profession is to be curious about WTF is going on. - Dave Winer
Yeah @Phil, that's probably true (what Brad said). Heck even Dave Winer doesn't listen to me, why would the Twitter folkeratti? ;^) - Michael Bailey
@Brad - Oh I'm sure they're not. And I don't blame them in that case.:) - phil baumann
Marshall, are you still here? - Michael Bailey
Dave Winer popularized recipient-controlled distribution, Jack Dorsey made it 2-way and realtime on a single domain, Evan Prodromou created a way for any site to join a realtime 2-way network. - Brian Hendrickson
Alexander: When a service is built on your product, it seems to me worthwhile to know it exists. When it's one that wins things like Techcrunch 50, it especially seems worthwhile to be aware of its existence. - Karoli
Well yeah, but even RSS which was supposed to provide a "summary" ended up shipping the entire contents of a site around the web. Nobody could expect Twitter to anticipate how their system would be used. Nobody can do that. - Michael Bailey
okay, I lost the post about identi.ca and laconica...but the identi.ca bridge only goes *to* twitter. It needs a lane going the other way...twitter to identi.ca. [EDIT] Found the post, thanks for the link. First I knew this existed! - Karoli
Michael - and I suppose anyone with that kind of visionary powers wouldn't be courting Kelso. - phil baumann
@phil, yeah, and if you find them, invest on my behalf, would ya? ;^) - Michael Bailey
Yes, I had a crude tweet-pulling client working in my OMB, now fixing it. and @singpolyma wrote the bridge I linked to but I haven't tried it yet, and @evan is getting a lot of requests and I spoke to him briefly about it in San Francisco and it seemed a possibility depending on licensing - Brian Hendrickson
Even if we could bring in the top 2,500 Twitter users and ask them for a concise list of all the features of a "killer app" it wouldn't be done. Way too many ideas and implementations for a single app. - Michael Bailey
Yes but when there is a good open source "clone" written in a fast-to-develop language then people will start creating new iterations of this medium - Brian Hendrickson
@Karoli I think that people living outside the Silicon Valley bubble have never heard of TechCrunch or FF. It may be interesting, it's also true that we tend to find things much more important than the rest of the world. They can do without a service like FF and still live happy ever after ;-) - Alexander van Elsas
we don't need a fast-to-develop language (RoR didn't scale, nor will any others). We need people who understand programming, low-overhead, efficient methods, etc. - Michael Bailey
It's "programming" - it's not supposed to be easy. - Michael Bailey
not for a network of millions of microblogs, you're thinking of scaling silos which is different - Brian Hendrickson
Just checked out Dave's link. The two tweets about Friendfeed are unbelievable - Jamie
how would those microblogs be connected, if not via a few silos? - Michael Bailey
there are at least 3 implementations right now of the http://openmicroblogging.org specification for site-to-site microblogging. 1: Laconica 2: OpenMicroBlogger 3: A wordpress plugin called nsw or something. And the Jaiku team has been actively improving the specification. - Brian Hendrickson
the protocol is just OAuth with a couple of fields added, and it's push-based so there is no polling - Brian Hendrickson
oh, sounds like a modified pingback structure - Michael Bailey
it lets people [Follow] you in realtime using a simple push. if you were microblogging at microblog.michaelbailey.com and you had 7,000 people at identi.ca following you, your message would be POSTed one time to that server. if 4,000 people at Leo's army.twit.tv were following you, your server would do a 2nd POST to deliver the notice/status to that community. - Brian Hendrickson
also, thinking outloud, and a few steps ahead, there'll eventually need to be a "registration" list maintained someplace to facilitate the discovery of what sites I could push to, which is a silo - Michael Bailey
all instances of OpenMicroBlogger ping a central search server with the URL of each status, and the search feature uses that central server, so that will facilitate discovery, but yes the other thing a "registration" list would do is make the [Follow] process more streamlined, right now you have to copy/paste a URL to follow someone on a site where you have not registered. - Brian Hendrickson
well, lessons learned from RSS were that people were quick no navigate to the early content aggregators, rather than wondering around looking for individual sites, so the issue of scaling the silo will remain - but, it does sound interesting and I'll look forward to watching it mature. - Michael Bailey
how many Twitterati would choose blogger.com over self-hosted wordpress? people are definitely interested in this, check out the download count of the #1 software package here http://open.srcphp.com/#top_co... - Brian Hendrickson
Brian: I think that analogy's distorted a bit. I'd say it's more a question of how many people would install their own email server. - Ken Sheppardson
off to a good start, but I don't think the first 25,000 will really count, and there's a ways to go for that. - Michael Bailey
And let me just say that I for one like how FriendFeed comment streams are flat, and the converation wanders all over the map to things that are completely unrelated to the entry, but they always tend to come back on track. It's an actual conversaion, not some explosion of nested comment conversation fragments. - Ken Sheppardson
agreed - what ken just said ;) - mike "glemak" dunn
Ken - well put. An acid trip that brings you back home. - phil baumann
Ken: openmicroblogger has friendfeed-style vertical comment threads, it also has comet-push for realtime for both notices and comments. - Brian Hendrickson
@Ken agreed - nested replies are only good in theory ;^) - Michael Bailey
Ken: email servers are private, microblogs are simply easier blogs. i've created 700 or so posts in my 1.5 years of microblogging - Brian Hendrickson
See, like that there. I don't know what the heck openmicroblogger has to do with anything, but I'll defend to the death your right to sidetrack the converation by talking about it ;-) - Ken Sheppardson
haha thanks - Brian Hendrickson
I would guess that it will find it's niche, but like opml it will remain too convoluted for the masses. - Michael Bailey
you can run openmicroblogger on a GoDaddy host, i've done it - Brian Hendrickson
I mean, heck, people still hit reply all and then say oooops - Michael Bailey
in the early days of email - back when all data was passed using UUCP (i.e. before the internet) email servers were exactly "public" in so much as if you had the UUCP bang path you could send anyone a message - bear (aka Mike Taylor)
it's only until scaling issues hit that forced smtp to be created - bear (aka Mike Taylor)
LOL heck Mike, I still remember doing archie searches - Michael Bailey
evan's protocol will surely hit some scaling problems if it becomes popular. xmpp has all of that covered of course and is speedy as hell, but not so easy to host yourself. I installed erlang and checked out punjab and it's all very cool. - Brian Hendrickson
yes, microbologging over xmpp is in a lot of ways at the same stage as html over http was at when apache was created - bear (aka Mike Taylor)
mike and mike killing the conversation with talk of UUCP and Archie - doh! - bear (aka Mike Taylor)
*crickets* - Ken Sheppardson
Ken the reason i'm making noise over here is because people don't realize they can collect their followers and their content in their own database, and that they can "manage" their social network the way they manage their blog. - Brian Hendrickson
status.net and twitteronia will help move the conversation along i think - Brian Hendrickson
or maybe it's not that they don't realize it, it's that they don't care :-) - Brian Hendrickson
It may just be that the logic leap between "Twitter doesn't seem to be listening to me" and "Go get a server and build your own Twitter" is a little too much for most people. :-) - Ken Sheppardson
don't "build a twitter", just microblog from a service that is part of a network, or install a microblog on your own site. identi.ca makes the former trivial. openmicroblogger makes the latter trivial. - Brian Hendrickson
Karoli, I agree that they need to do lot more of this but Twitter does have people like @crystal doing community mgmt on Get Satisfaction. - Mike Doeff
As the developer of openmicroblogger, you might have a slightly different definition of "trivial" than the typical disenfranchised Twitter user, Brian. ;-) - Ken Sheppardson
oh I dunno - the reality of that is it is too disconnected - when all the the microfeeds are pulled in, and I go to leave a comment, I expect a pretty rapid response - but in actual use, the person pushing the data out isn't even "there". - Michael Bailey
I get responses days or sometimes weeks after leaving a comment, then I'm like "huh? oh yeah, I've moved on" - Michael Bailey
of course, were I an A-Lister, I'd be all for it, because as long as my "message" gets pushed out to all platforms, I don't really care about engaging in conversation - Michael Bailey
as search is developed on the http://openmicroblogging.org network of microblogs, you'll be able to see replies on other hosts more easily, and for the next version of the protocol there will be an attempt to allow @replies between sites but it will be tricky to keep the spammers out. - Brian Hendrickson
which will no doubt turn into a full-time job and degrade the service and then when you take steps to keep them out, you'll piss off your community - wait, are we talking about Twitter now? lol - Michael Bailey
Let's just create OOAPI, the open openAPI - Michael Bailey
well, it seems to have died in here, thanks for the great conversation (and I'll overlook the name calling and bashing...Robert) ;^) - Michael Bailey
the community already has a choice of several pieces of software. but yes thanks for the conversation Michael and Ken and Mike and Mike ;) happy microblogging - Brian Hendrickson
this thread officially has reached its quota of mikes - justsayn ;) - mike "glemak" dunn
The fact that this conversation is happening over at FriendFeed (and could never exist on Twitter) is pretty telling in itself. It's hard to get excited about Twitter. In fact, I see less and less value in the service as time goes by. I wonder if they can deliver in the near future. - Kevin Pruett
*mike threshold now officially surpassed* I'm 5 hours late to the party, but just planting a post-it note that says High density of information, Return here sometime. And I whole-heartily agree with Ken's single-level threads work best on ff. Were there a scattering of sub-branching comments, it would be akin to shuttling around one or two people in/out of a side rooms for a chat when a... more... - Micah
yes agreed, i love the single level threading of ff as well - mike "glemak" dunn
yay! my name is not mike! :) interesting post and long thread! ;) though I'm naturally biased about 'tree'-threading, I like to have the option to list or thread if I want. Oddly enough, I'm building something which isn't a million miles *between* twitter and friendfeed (on top of a phreadz platform). </plug> - back to the topic though, 2/47 isn't bad for a journo: even less of them follow the developers who have actually built interesting/useful/unexpected/valuable things on their platform. - kosso
speaking from experience eh kosso - i for one am glad to call you an honorary mike ;) - mike "glemak" dunn
I've only seen a tiny bit of video of the twitter founders - there's not much charisma and there's something else I can't put my finger on. Probably it's that "normal introverts" look arrogant under the "sudden darling" media spotlight. - Richard Walker

Reading people's thoughts on the replies issue. We're considering alternatives. Thanks for your feedback.
We would be happy to provide feedback in advance next time. - Louis Gray
Thank goodness you responded when you did - the frothy mob outside was about finished building the gallows! - Brett Kelly
at the rate that #fixreplies tweets are coming down the pipe they'd be nuts to not re-think their decision and/or explanation - Chris Heath
Nice to know you're listening! - Michael Fidler
You should ask for people's thoughts first. - Michael McKean
I reckon removing the feature was a good things. Has left holes though, that probably shoulda been filled first. - Tim
Louis: sorry, until Twitter fixes how it treats early adopters I'm not giving Twitter free consulting. Only suckers would do that. We helped build Twitter and then it stabs us in the back. That's not making me willing to provide free consulting. Don't know why you'd do that. - Robert Scoble
I volunteer to be your community manager for a month free. If I'm effective at communicating ahead of swarms like this, you can hire me and pay me retroactively. Because seriously? You really need someone to communicate with your users in real time. - Karoli
I hope "considering alternatives" is a euphemism for "we'll have it back right stat, sorry!" - Jandy
@scobleizer; "stabs us in the back" A bit over the top perhaps? - Jordan Brock
Jordon: it absolutely is NOT over the top. When they recommend someone who has only been on Twitter a week or two as a recommended follower they are stabbing users who put a lot more time into the service directly in the back. I have about 1,000 days on Twitter and have put thousands of hours into the service. The way Twitter treats its users is deplorable. - Robert Scoble
Jordan, Mr. Scoble has a propensity for the dramatic. :) - Brett Kelly
Well since it was just a "small setting update" the simplest alternative should be to just undo the change, right? - Ken Sheppardson
Brett: when you put thousands of hours into something and you get stabbed in the back by the owners of that thing you see how it feels. - Robert Scoble
In the meantime, Twitter can get the celebrities to help out with its community problems. I'm not working for free and anyone who does for a company that stabs its users in the back is a sucker. - Robert Scoble
Robert, I can offer my services for free all day to Twitter. I know they won't take me up on it as they aren't interested in what I have to say and their track record proves that. - Louis Gray
I'm really curious to know what kind of stats that were tracked to make this decision. Both @al3x and @dougw are hinting that there wasn't a significant number of people "using this feature", which I am extremely skeptical of. Would tracking the number of times I click out to a profile that I'm not following be enough? It is impossible for them to track whether I personally received value from a tweet even if I didn't click through, right? - Lee Adkins
"The way Twitter treats its users is deplorable" What other instances justify this statement? - Angus Burton
@ev Don't you have more important things to focus on? ie., affiliate marketers who don't disclose what they're doing, follow bots, and all of the spam and manipulation that's ruining twitter?. - Michael Fidler
Louis, I think @ev is listening to you and other Internet celebs, but not nobodies like me. - Vinko
Vinko, I'm no Internet celebrity, and I don't believe I've been addressed by him ever, so he has an odd way of "listening". - Louis Gray
You can't go asking your customers about every checkbox and option. Knowing which is what makes a good decision maker. - Ryan Stanley
Sure you can, when it's a feature change that enough users expect to have. It's not disabling a checkbox, it's disabling community discovery. - Karoli
Karoli, here here!! - Vinko
Twitter is clearly listening, and responding quickly and in public. Now, they need to roll back the change - Bob Morris (polizeros)
Twitter knows all the geeks moved to FF. I doubt Oprah considers it a feature change. - Ryan Stanley
wow what a conversation. - Dustin
+1 to dedlam :) - Jordan Brock
Twitter will "consider alternatives" until #fixreplies starts trending back down, which will happen over the next 24 hrs or so. Then they'll look to see if there's any dip in the user number or sign-up rates. There won't be, as nobody's actually willing to leave Twitter over this and new users who've accepted the default setting don't know this option was there, so this will be the last word on the subject you'll see from ev. - Ken Sheppardson
Ken, that's true today and not true in the future. Twitter's continued decision to ignore user feedback and input and make arbitrary decisions will ultimately result in someone creating the next shiny thing. It happened with other services/sites and it will again. - Karoli
Karoli: That'll happen either way. - Ken Sheppardson
There must be a strategy around this, right? They wouldn't just arbitrarily do this. What would be the next feature they implement to make this redundant? - Gregg Scott
Hmm. So, Ev is "Reading people's thoughts." wouldn't it be better if he talked and listened. - Michael Markman
Michael: Thought reading must be something they're testing internally. Probably part of Twitter Pro. - Ken Sheppardson
Could be the move that pushes more people over the FF wall. I've not considered this move until now, but now..... - Debi Jones
@scobleizer, i thought the point of using twitter was because you want to not because you want fame and a pat on the back from evan for "helping". shame on you, that's the biggest douchery i've heard in quite some time. - Snipergirl
Leather is an astute reader! :-) - Robert Scoble
Snipergirl: that's BS. If you are in the media business the size of your audience allows you to build a business. Before the recommended follower list Mashable, GigaOm, and TechCrunch had smaller audiences than I did on Twitter. Now they have far bigger ones and people who don't do many tweets at all are rewarded while the rest of us suckers are left in the back of the bus. If I just... more... - Robert Scoble
The simple alternative is to make is a user preference. Even better would be groups, and then to apply said preference to groups. - Barney Craggs
@scobleizer if it's a business to you then vote with your feet and go to a different service and stop whining about evan not paying you enough attention! - Snipergirl
Snipergirl: that's exactly what I've done. But, sorry, I've put thousands of hours in and 904 days into Twitter. When a service treats someone who has put far less work into it better than me, I deserve to whine a little bit and anyone who says I don't isn't worth listening to. Let's put it this way. I see on LinkedIn that you are a hospital worker. What if you put in the time, do a... more... - Robert Scoble
Not entirely sure I agree with Robert, but I'll say this: it is incredibly frustrating when sites you use as intensely as Facebook and Twitter ignore the intelligent users. I won't say intelligent = early adopters, and I won't even say that it precludes the celebrities, but it is extremely tiring offering "feedback" when you're treated as just one voice. Clearly, CEO's are out of touch and don't understand us; yet, running a [sufficiently large] site by total democracy trends towards the stupid. #fixreplies - tollie williams
Matt: I get what you're trying to say, but, here's another way to look at it. Twitter has signaled to the world that there's no way you'll ever been seen as a "top tier" person. Take me out of it. No matter how many hours you spend, no matter how popular you'll get, you won't be treated the same way as one of their personal friends and/or celebrities that they want to feature. To me that sucks. It is not a meritocracy. It's a closed society and that's everything I work against. - Robert Scoble
The real problem is like this: Twitter was made for broadcasting and was never meant to be a convesational platform. Even friendfeed does the comments half baked. There are no comments for comments. - ThinkEzy
The only feedback users contribute (that matters) is what they buy or use. If you don't like Twitter, leave. - Jason Nunnelley
@Gattoo seriously, wouldn't this conversation be a LOT easier with threading and a respond feature? - Jason Nunnelley
I don't know about meritocracies or closed societies, but i do know that the main way I find new people to follow on twitter is by seeing who the people I already follow are talking to...and if they say something of interest to me in a reply to them, I want to check that person out. If all I see are replies to people I already follow, I won't find anyone knew unless I pay much closer... more... - Shawna Benson
Gattoo: I disagree with that at least in part. The thing that always excited me about this media is that it's two way. You talk, I respond. But Twitter has biased its business toward the serving of celebrities who mostly use Twitter to broadcast and less to those who try to use it to have conversations with people. That's their right. It's my right to whine about it, though. :-) - Robert Scoble
Shawna: yup. I think Twitter wants to push people like you to use search instead of the "@ replies" tab. - Robert Scoble
Robert: that's a problem -- why would I search on something I don't even know to search for unless someone mentions it? Let's say person A tells person B something about daffodils and I find that interesting enough to go check out person B and start following them based on who they are, who they talk to, etc. Now, 'daffodils' aren't normally something I go randomly searching for info... more... - Shawna Benson
@scobleizer It's possible you give them far too much credit. I doubt they've any plan beyond limiting feed size. - Jason Nunnelley
Shawna: I mean you can search for someone who uses your name. I do that on Seesmic Desktop and here on friendfeed and it regularly catches people who both use @scobleizer as well as people who just say "scoble" etc. Then I can go off and check them out, just the same as if I used the @mentions page. - Robert Scoble
Jason: you're right. Twitter's team sure seems like they don't think things out and take the easy road most times. The recommended follower list is just one example of that. They could have done something really magical, but instead they did something half assed. They should have just hired Guy Kawasaki to do an AllTop page for it. That would have been better than what we got. - Robert Scoble
"we've learned most people want to see when someone they follow replies to another person they follow [...] [h]owever, receiving one-sided fragments via replies sent to folks you don't follow in your timeline is undesirable" so despite what we apparently learned that people want we've decided to scrap it anyway. Interesting use of the word "learned" there. - Mark H
Twitter made a mistake by removing this option whatsoever and they have to revert back. We have brains to decide what we do when we have an option! - Jacque from twhirl
The simple way of looking at it for me seems to be- when they say it's what most people are telling them to do, it's actually them telling most people what to do. - Iain Baker
Scoble: You deserve a couple hundred thousand followers, for sure. I joined Twitter bc I read a post you wrote in '07. I hadn't looked at your follower count in a while; figured for sure you had at least been rotated in Suggest Users by now. That just makes me dislike the Suggested Users crap even more. ... The question here, I guess, is: did you do something so bad that Twitter/Ev/Jack/Biz can not forgive you? - john erik metcalf
Scoble: Actually, even if you did, it would still be bullshit. What is this, Texas politics? Good ol' boy system. They need to figure out a better way, obviously things are getting very unequal. - john erik metcalf
I don't know, Scoble, I'm going to take a different angle. Did Ev ever ask you to spend "thousands of hours" and 900+ days on Twitter? If so, then I'd say you've got a gripe. Otherwise, you did it voluntarily for your benefit, and frankly, Ev doesn't owe you anything; he provided a service for free, you used the hell out of it (profiting along the way, I don't doubt). It sounds like... more... - Bob M. Montgomery
I already miss what my followees are saying to other people. I've been using Tweetree for awhile now, because it would display the tweet to which my followee is replying (unless it was a protected tweet). With the new change, that aspect doesn't work, and Tweetree's entire platform is practically destroyed... - Qrystal MqKenzie
If there's one good thing about this, it's that I can probably follow more people: I used to not follow someone if all they do is reply to people without giving context of what they're talking about. Maybe they'll make it so the visibility of @replies to people I'm not following is set on a per-user basis... which would be great, because some of my followees were SO GOOD at giving context, it's a major loss to no longer be able to see their @replies to people I don't follow! - Qrystal MqKenzie
Qrystal: I feel the same way, except now it's a huge hassle for me to actually find all the people I should be following. - Guan Yang
Bryan, this is about a setting being removed that was not the default setting. If you had changed the default setting to this setting you would see every tweet by the people you were following (the default was and still is to hide the @'s to people you're not following). The change is now there is no choice that setting has been removed and anyone who set that setting is now back to the default (which it seems you've always been on). - Chris Heath
I don't want to have to follow a bunch of people just so I can follow a topic to it's close. Am hoping this was more about saving downtime. This is how Plurk etc will find it's market. Maybe this will clear the chaff and all the real people can take the reins again! - Elia Penn from Nambu
@scobleizer please clarify: are you saying that "stab in the back" = "not being on the recommended list"? - Michael Markman
I'm still trying to figure out why Scoble is so upset. While it's noble for him to have helped pioneer the service and offer input on making it better, I don't see how that equates to Twitter somehow owing him any type of allegiance. Also, people seem to have forgotten that Twitter is an independent entity, responsible only to its investors (ultimately) and, as such, they are free to... more... - Brett Kelly
@Brett your suggestion that people go elsewhere to find a similar Twitter service is what makes the free market so interesting and exciting. While Twitter cannot be everything to everyone, every decision Twitter makes affects their future success. Look at what happened to MySpace and the rise of Facebook or Ford compared to Honda. If Twitter leaves enough room, someone else will come... more... - Damond Nollan from email
Michael: no. He's said in the past that he would asked to be removed if he was placed on the list. Thought I can see Scoble's frustration, I agree with Brett on this one. - Angus Burton
I haven't read this thread in its entirety, so I apologize in advance if I repeat anyone else's position. Two thoughts: 1) If the powers that be at Twitter were simply concerned with reducing the noise in our streams, why not simply change the default setting of the @ replies to not show all, while keeping the option available? Instead, they change the default behavior and remove the... more... - Phil Essing
I wonder if Ev has made it over to friendfeed to read this. I can see Robert's points. It would have been cool if more 'meritorious' tweeps were added to the recommendeds. But when the average non-techie person signs up to Twitter they probably find it more attractive to follow P-Diddy and Ellen than to follow someone they've never heard of, regardless of how much valuable content they've added to the service. That being said, Twitter needs to adjust they're listening ears. - Jesse Newhart
Phil: that was the setting. It used to be an option to turn on all replies from friends, now there are not at reply options at all. If you had made the settings change, you're back to the default. - Chris Heath
Jesse: I have to suggest that the average person would probably prefer to follow someone that actually shares their interests, and beliefs, likes and dislikes. Thus the whole recommended users list on any site is bullshit, and completely worthless. In the absence of a personally worthwhile recommendation, the average non-tech would probably prefer to follow typical pop stars (Brittney,... more... - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Phil: The network I've built since 2007 was largely built exactly with the optional feature that they just removed. I don't mean to sound hysterical or overly dramatic, but the change eliminated something that was fundamental to how I used twitter. It is a free service, they can do as they see fit, it's just a less useful free service to me than it once was. - motownmutt
Jay: I find that Getsatisfaction.com never lives up to its name. I can't think of an issue I've posted or looked into where the company in question posted something. I've found several companies who reirect all their support questions to there, apparently as a convenient black hole. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Brett: Twitter being a free service and held by private investors do not make it immune to the desires of its user base which are the source of its (theoretical) future earnings potential. The less it chooses to work with its user base, and the more it makes decisions that alienate them, the more likely it it that they bail (as HUGE numbers already do withing 30,60,90days of account... more... - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Jay: No one from twitter support supports a damn thing, unless you're oprah, or brittney or aplusk. Not on getsatisfaction and not anywhere. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Jay: I have never seen anyone from any company answer any question about anything on getsatisfaction.com. This includes WAY more companies that I've looked into than twitter. I never expected anyone from twitter to answer, but I've sure as hell expected someone from ping.fm to answer when that's where their support link took me, - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Update from Twitter - "...we're making a change such that any updates beginning with @username (that are not explicitly created by clicking on the reply icon) will be seen by everyone following that account. This will bring back some serendipity and discovery and we can do this very soon" And they've started designing a new feature which will "give folks far more control over what they... more... - Sharon McPherson
When I last looked their last response had been over three months prior to the date i was looking. I would welcome my mind being changed, but you're trying to change it on two subjects I don't have much faith in a) twitter support in general, and b) getsatisfaction's overall effectiveness. Links may change my mind. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Chris Heath: It seems I wrongly assumed that the @ replies were set to all by default, likely because I chose that setting a long time ago. Thanks. However, that truly begs the question as to why the folks at Twitter decided to remove the option. - Phil Essing
motownmutt: Like I said, I do understand the frustration caused by this feature removal, a frustration which I share. That being said, I'm not going to lose any sleep as a result. - Phil Essing
i'm going to say this fully knowing the fan boy charges i will open myself up to - u can see how concerned i am about that possibility (yawn) - from my perspective scoble has a valid point (Louis is also welcome to offer help to a service he values btw) - about this time last year a myriad of similar conversations were taking place here as twitter crashed MULTIPLE times a day - i cant... more... - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
I am actually fine with the change because one can always go the persons page to find who he/she has replied to and it makes your page less cluttered. There is always some trade off but i am fine. I am waiting for more options from twitter in the future. - Ashish
Funny take on this - http://cli.gs/dumb - Brian Kelley
I love the twitter product, but am growing more disgusted by the twitter management team. There is zero user input solicitation and this latest event #fixreplies is a classic mistake of product mgrs who fail to engage their customer base to get valuable feedback on the design prior to go live; instead, twitter mgmt is releasing features that are not vetting by their user base - huge... more... - Susan Beebe

Evan, perhaps with the next major functional change you might consider inviting ideas of your users; a good example of how this can work is presented by SalesForce.com: 'Idea Exchange' http://ideas.salesforce.com/ (no suprise SalesForce.com is good in gathering and using feedback from their customers; being a CRM company ;-) ) - Jeroen De Miranda
Scoble, you are a follow-blocker, and as such, you laid the groundwork for the devs putting in this nerf. There are quite a few thin-skinned A-listers who hate seeing back-talk in the @ tabs. this accommodated their wailing. It's wrong and should be put back. People who are vain enough to want to broadcast to followers have to accept that they will hear from the public, and often critically. Otherwise, go on a private AIM or FB chat. - Prokofy Neva
Prokofy: bullshit. If you are a jerk you don't deserve to mess up my experience. You can keep commenting on your own place and I'll still see it anyway. Everyone I know searches on their last name. But I absolutely won't back down from your bullying and change my opinions. I will keep blocking people who are jerks and who are spammers. That's the only way we can keep our community from destroying itself over time. You are NOT entitled to get in my face, sorry. - Robert Scoble

Twitter's Cap of 2,000 Following In Action!
0.jpe
As mentioned earlier today, Twitter seems to have capped your ability to follow at 2,000 people, which just so happens to be exactly where I am. The goal, in theory, is to stop marketing-oriented spammers, but it could be another way to reduce stress on the system. So what should I do now, delete "less favored" people, or wait for Twitter to figure this out? - Louis Gray from email
Maybe it's the legacy talking, but I'm really not bothered by this. :P - Ⓒⓗⓡⓘⓢ Ⓟⓘⓡⓘⓛⓛⓞ
I can see why they do it, but it does suck for the people who do it legitimately and are not using stupid mass follow scripts. - David Risley
I'm not super-concerned either, but it does answer why all of a sudden, I started getting these errors last week. It could be part of their "Making Progress On Spam" initiative via the blog, but it hasn't been spelled out all that clearly. - Louis Gray
let blame this one on Scobles... :)- - Peter Dawson
Louis, I think cap is more of the architecture the system. Making it into a more robust platform. Now watermarks have been set, it becomes easier to build consistency of experience and application behavior. <Edit > wait for Twitter to figure it out.. Marketing spammers are targeting the 'stupid' one that have the auto follow !! - Peter Dawson
gotta like it, if I'm the one you are trying to follow! - Ben Hedrington
I don't think there should be limits like this, but I guess everything can't be infinite - Rahsheen
I honestly am indifferent about it; Twitter is going to hell and i tried my best to convert it; oh well, Hell has cookies - Gordon Swaby
I"m only following 49... with 106 followers.. - Ian May
so what do you think, Louis, is benhedrington worth going to the mat for? - Nathan Rein
I'm sure I can find someone to unfollow in exchange for Ben. - Louis Gray
Twitter needs to build in groups functionality a la tweetdeck for following 2K+ to even be practical. - Nicholas Molnar
Louis: You need to convince the new people to head over here :) - Justin Korn
I'm just curious what the rationale is for following that many people. - Paul Rodriguez
Well, maybe that's why Louis always seems to know what's going on before anybody else. - Rahsheen
I've noticed that most of the time I get followed by somebody with a big number, it tends to be marketing play. It triggers the email to you and then you go look and click on their bio link which takes you to the pitch. Very irritating. I always block em. - Mark Schulz
@Paul Rodriguez, I was wondering that too. I wouldn't have even guessed there are 2000 interesting people in the world </cynicism>, but what fascinate me is that i'm following like 83 people and only about 14 of them tweet regularly. I can assume most of those 2000 do not tweet regularly. Add in the fact that I'm a WAHM to two toddlers, and do other stuff, there'd be a lot of stuff I'd miss. - Anika
New profit center? Sorry, but now you'll have to join Twitter Pro .... - Charlie Anzman
Info restrictions suck:( - Igor Poltavskiy
Very interesting. System limits is going to be a topic that we all work through in this early phase of the Social Web. It seems to me that it's reasonable to cap the number one follows to 1,000 or 2,000. On the flipside, one would clearly like to enable a very high number of followers. With respect to bi-directional connections, the real number should max at 1,000 to 2,000... - John McCrea
So where is the point following 30k people? You might as well hit the main timeline. The only thing that is bad about this limit is that it was not there from the beginning. - Alexander Kohlhofer
@kevinrose: 56K+. Losing 54K+? - Igor Poltavskiy
so what's going to happen to those who follow over 2000? - Wayne Sutton
you follow two. thousand. people.??? never mind twitter; there may be a law against that. - jeneane sessum
I like the new limit. I cannot see how anyone would be able to legitimately follow (and pay attention to) more than 2,000 people. Frankly, even that limit seems higher than it needs to be. If it helps keep Twitter a little more stable, go for it. - Dennis Metzcher
Couple thoughts: the limit impacts the ability to use the service as a direct message router -- for some people. It also reinforces the need for dectralized microblogging -- so if you want exceed the limits you can do so on your own infrastructure. Lastly, nothing prevents you from following everyone or a subset of people through RSS/feeds. - Chris Messina
Are we sure that Twitter has set a 2,000 limit are or we cranking up the rumor mill? I've seen image before with respect to my own account - an account which just reached 1,000 followers today. According the Twitter rep who contacted me, I got - ahem - put in "Twitter Prison" for "Aggressive Following" My ratio of Followers to Following was kinda out of whack - at that time I had only ~800 people following me while I was following ~2,800 - They suspended my ability to follow more people. I removed 2K. - Vincent Wright
I don't understand the motivation for following 2K people if you're not a spammer... someone explain? - Jason Carreira
Jason: For a entrepreneur/VC/angel networker, it would be very easy to hit 2,000 contacts (assuming you used Twitter like a rolodex). From one networking meeting, I might pick up 0-100+ business cards (more at conferences), and during a heavy season I could be doing 7-10 meetings/week. As a angel, I might want to follow 5,000-10,000+ projects/people. Anyone might have a really good project 2-10+ years down the pipe... I've got cartons/boxes of 3-ring binders of business cards in plastic sheets. - Mitchell Tsai
@Mitchell @Charlie - Rumors aside, do you think the cap is a gesture towards monetization? Going after the power networkers? Seems you would have good cause to pay for a Twitter Pro, or would it just not be worth it? - joneilortiz
I use Twitter as both a professional development tool (following people who say useful and interesting things abt health / edtech / social media / libraries ...), a personal tool (friends and folk who are amusing), and a reference tool (following a lot of news streams and information resources). You can hit 2000 fast. A friend says that people are imagining new ways in which Twitter could be used, but Twitter seems bound and determined to force them back into some small box of how it "ought" to be. - Patricia F. Anderson
I would happily follow more than 2000 people, heck I am almost there. And I don't need to see every message. With Tweetdeck it's manageable. I see some Friendfeed users here have thousands to tens of thousands of subscriptions, should we also say it's good to have a cap here? No, please no. I understand that perhaps it has to do with monetization or stressing the system less, these are alas viable reasons. - Jacob

Kmart and Sears launch social sites http://www.mysears.com/ http://www.mykmart.com/ encourages buyer to buyer feedback
I love the idea for MyKmart / MySears. Wish more brands encouraged community and feedback on their own turf. Will be fun to watch. - Mike Templeton
Nah, I'm just not going to go to each brand's "my" site. And I'm certainly not going to go there and expect that most people are "real" as opposed to plants placed/paid by the brand. - Craig Eddy
A smarter move for Kmart & Sears is to use existing socials, benefiting from cross-pollination. - Jason Nunnelley
I dont like it.. YASN = yet another social network.. why not use the tools everyone is using already - instead of trying to pull people in. that's why the news industry is flailing now - refusal to adapt and insistence on pulling people in when they didnt want to be - andy brudtkuhl
We added reviews to our sites and in very short order have over 7000 responses. It's been very useful for everyone. But, it all remains under our primary domains so it does not take the shape of a separate social media site. - Rick Bucich
Rick - that is exactly how it should happen - andy brudtkuhl
@i140 Jason: perhaps it's particular to our product but for us, existing review platforms haven't gotten traction. I suspect it is because many (like Yelp) are localized and our customers are nationwide and international. - Rick Bucich
Interesting conglomeration at mykmart, mysears, etc. http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... - Jason Nunnelley
Look at non-traditional social networks that sprout up around e-commerce... Amazon comments, lists, recommendations, etc... Netflix has friends features, recommendations, ratings - andy brudtkuhl
In an article about the launch the founder talks about using things like Facebook Connect, etc. to pull in additional user data. Doesn't want it to be a chore to set up "another profile." Also, this is an opportunity for them to build partnerships with places like Amazon, Netflix, etc. to bring in their content. Either way, they'll build up a community of uber-focused brand loyalists. - Mike Templeton
I don't think there's a solid argument yet over which is better: custom-building social features or leveraging existing platforms? Corporations like Sears will want to collect (and own) customer data and behaviors, so custom-building makes sense out of the gate for them. Building off Facebook Connect assumes that Facebook is *the* ubiquitous social networking utility, which may be true, but does require a leap of faith from the big corp standpoint. - Nathan T. Wright
@mike true but those brand loyalists are already buying from them and are following them on Twitter, Facebook, etc... Why create another bridge? Why create more dispersion? - andy brudtkuhl
@webtwopointeight I concede your point, and see a social deep-linking future. Aren't we wishing we had threading now? - Jason Nunnelley
@Nathan - you are exactly right - they want the data. This why newspapers are in the state they are today. They wanted to own eyeballs and data (classifieds, jobs, etc). Rather than using the tools available they tried to create their own and they became irrelevant - andy brudtkuhl
@abrudtkuhl The idea is to keep you on the site. It makes sense. They link into existing socials also. <3 existing platforms. - Jason Nunnelley
I wonder if you can create a happy medium here. Build some proprietary social functionality but still allow for the portability of identity and social graphs? - Nathan T. Wright
@abrudtkuhl Though we don't like to admit it, not everyone is on Twitter/Facebook. This is a way for Sears to mine the data they collect from fans, just like Facebook is doing as a third-party aggregator. Also, how much are you really going to be posting about Sears on other websites? To me this is like signing up for the email newsletter. I joined their community because I am interested. I'll go there to see reviews, discussions, etc. related to Sears. It's not only a filter for them, but a filter for me. - Mike Templeton
Completely retarded. It shows a complete lack of understanding for the long-term as we move away from proprietary networks, owning customers, etc. - coldbrew
But after the initial "flash in the pan" from the site being new, what compels me to keep coming back to mysears.com? Honestly, I can't think of anything... - Craig Eddy
@mike oh yes i agree they want to broaden their social reach .. but they should do it on their main domain, wrapped around their store - directly linking the online buying experience with the social experience. Not YASN - andy brudtkuhl
@Craig - exactly that's why it needs tied into the buying experience. Any B&M store like this should look to Amazon for how to approach implementing proprietary social systems into the buying experience - cuz that's where it matters. - andy brudtkuhl
Example: Whenever I am looking to buy something, I go to Amazon or Newegg first to check out the ratings and recommendations - which are tightly coupled to the product - not on a completely different site - andy brudtkuhl
http://www.viewpoints.com/ is an existing social, just not one of the ones we typically use. I agree that controlling your space is paramount in commerce. Amazon comments are dead on. - Jason Nunnelley
@Andy I think you will see them incorporating things like reviews and discussions from the MySears site back into their main online experience. Just give them time. - Mike Templeton
@Mike undoubtedly... so that begs the question - why not just implement that in the main site? ...Where all your customers are already visiting ... right where they can click "BUY" - andy brudtkuhl
Another component I love about this: "2,338 members in IA" Already that's more people than I follow on Twitter, and I follow people from everywhere. This is a great way for me to find targeted information from a targeted audience. - Mike Templeton
Amazon has only one physical product of their own (not counting SKUs), and it also represents lots of different retailers. It is not quite appropriate for an analogy. - coldbrew
The benefit to the stores are cross-linking / deep-linking between their web presences. I don't see a benefit to the customer - like Craig said "why would i go back?" - andy brudtkuhl
@coldbrew yea it is - sears sells products that arent their own - andy brudtkuhl
@Andy I'm saying they will add that into the main site. It's just a difference of a domain. It also creates some separation for those who may not care. "To join in discussions about this product, visit MySears.com and see what other consumers are saying." - Mike Templeton
Brudtkuhl: The majority of Sears products are their own (Kenmore, Craftsmen, etc.). I wouldn't go to Sears for anything else. Sears doesn't have other vendors for whom their domain is an ecommerce site. Amazon has less conflict of interest in controlling the consumer contributions (moderating poor reviews). - coldbrew
It's still a digital natives issue if you ask me. Traditional retailers too often have very little knowledge, interest, or ability in using social computing to engage customers, despite these encouraging signs. Of course, the survivors 10 years from now will have figured it out, one way or another. - Dion Hinchcliffe
@Dion: Do you feel that Sears is not "getting it" with this community? They have a blog, offer consumer reviews, discussion sections, a "submit your idea" ala Dell's Ideastorm, plus outposts on the top social media websites. They've even got tools to enable users to share information via email or other channels. Seems to me they are ticking all the social media boxes. - Mike Templeton
I think Dion is drawing a distinction between "ticking the boxes" and making it part of the fabric of the retailer... I work at Best Buy and we are spending a lot of time thinking about the latter. - Ben Hedrington
@benhedrington But first Best Buy had to step into the conversation, right? I think this is a good step for Sears, but is also only the first step. With what they've launched for now, I'd be surprised if we don't see this stuff integrated into their main experience in the near future. - Mike Templeton
Mike, I'm with Ben, social retailing is something that goes far beyond social media; it's about transforming the very way customers are engaged by the company. The models for doing this effectively (both in terms of cost and the desired outcomes on both sides of the conversation) are still evolving. Social media is a good medium, but it's far from sufficient when it comes to engaging customers over the network as a primary channel. Great first steps from Sears IMHO. - Dion Hinchcliffe
@Mike I don't disagree start somewhere start small and grow it based on feedback organically... but when you see these vendor platforms launch it seems more about "installing a product to make you social" in this case Viewpoints.com rather than efforts to become a social retailer. All that said kudos to Sears for trying and getting out there with something. - Ben Hedrington
Jeremiah thanks for your post. Rob Harles here - I am the VP of Community at Sears. The comments from your followers are very helpful and many of them dead on. This is a first step for us and we are committed to seeing this through to fully integrate community into everything that we do. We are very keen on using this initiative to learn and evolve. So, we are glad to hear from you. - Robert Harles
Robert - thanks for chiming in! Great to know you are listening! - andy brudtkuhl
@Mike- Great discussion! This is Julie-Community Liason on MySears. Sears.com and MySears are linked. When you check out a product, there are reviews and discussion links from the MySears site on the product page. Just wanted to let you know-Sears is trying to make the social interaction work with the retail side. - Julie Kayaian

I like the idea of social contracts like a bee-glue between Social Context and Social Commerce. My Question is how can a small community with not such a strong social hubs influence a social contract when is challenge with a stronger community? It's about minority representation in a social contract... - Dan Romescu
Interesting. I've used those eras in a school project on social media. But I don't understand why Jeremiah considers OpenSocial as belonging to "functionnality" (http://www.web-strategist.com/blog...). IMO, it's much more about colonization, if you look at the "Sharing and Accessing Social Data" page: http://www.opensocial.org/page.... - Jérôme

So much for intelligent: there should be a comma after 'intelligent'. Tsk tsk, Steve. Tsk. Tsk. - Akiva
He's on my list of people I'd love to have dinner with =) - FFing Enigma
Oh snap, Jason an Abby with the sweet grammar lesson. - Jon Anderson
Jason, and in the past 20 years or so, terrorist attacks are up. Just because something has become increasingly common doesn't mean it should be acceptable. And, yes, I just compared the Oxford comma with terrorism because it IS terrorism to drop it. IT IS. [MELODRAMA] - Akiva
Would it be too much if I had some cars like this printed up? Maybe on the back of my "personal" business cards? - Ha3rvey (on hiatus)
Oh, and you can't trust anything that Canada does. I mean really. Canada? - Akiva
Glen, that would impress me if I wasn't already familiar with Oulipo. - Akiva
i've always been taught no comma, but then again i'm canadian so what do i know. - Imabug
Glen, that story title sounds like something right out of McSweeney's. - Akiva
AP Style Book prefers no comma; NY Times style is comma. I'm an editor, and we don't use that comma in our style guidelines, per AP Style. It is, indeed, optional and a stylistic choice, one that's been an editor's determination for decades. - Bob M. Montgomery
This thread made my pedantic meter explode. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Also, Steve Martin is pure, unfiltered awesome. I've seen this card before online, but it never ceases to make me smile :) - Bob M. Montgomery
My elementary school teachers were very adamant about NOT using the oxford comma. Boy was I surprised by the real world. - Jason Wehmhoener
I've always saw the dropping of the serial comma as evidence of a person's low intelligence and proclivity for coprophagia. But that's just me. - Akiva
"Oh pointy bird....." - Toby Graham
Jason, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. - Akiva
Thanks guys, now I've got Vampire Weekend singing in my head. - Yolanda
It's funny, I always used the Harvard comma (as we called it) until I became an editor years ago and my boss was an AP follower. Doing some homework on it about a decade ago made it clear to me that the serial comma was a print maker's perogative even 100 years ago (possibly further). I'm far more bothered by the general misuse of apostrophes and the inability to use and understand the semicolon than the serial comma. Grammar discussions are fun :) - Bob M. Montgomery from twhirl
The terminal comma is to be used in very rare and specific cases, e.g., in cases where semi-colons could have been used in place of all the commas, or when each item on the list is multi-word, and such (this sentence is an example of the list of multi-words). Those are rare situations and normally the terminal comma is a big no-no. The rule is the same in many other languages as well. - Bora Zivkovic
Glen's right. Most people I know who know more about this sort of thing than I do say that, even if the Oxford comma isn't supported within a particular style, such as the AP, it should be because, as Glen also points out, it leads to horrible consequences. - Akiva
*googles "coprophagia"* I have a feeling I will regret this. - Ha3rvey (on hiatus)
ha3rvey, 2commas1sentence. - Akiva
I wish I hadn't done that. Oh, crap. LITERALLY! - Ha3rvey (on hiatus)
FF is certainly in the no comma camp or at least the likes list indicates this. - Brian Sullivan
I don't know. I could go either way, frankly. I think that if a sentence is complex or has a long enough series, a semicolon is prefered for true clarity. I would say that after 15 years of editing 8-10 monthly magazines in the AP style, the lack of a serial comma has resulted in little to no confusion. Then again, as I say, I'd rather use semicolons for instances where clarity is essential. It's a style thing, which is why there's no hard and fast rule :D - Bob M. Montgomery from twhirl
Using the Oxford comma can cause just as much ambiguity as omitting it. For example, consider "Betty, a maid, and a rabbit". In British English, i.e. according to the people who actually invented the language, the Oxford comma is frowned upon. Being pedantic about these things is silly and you should use whichever one causes the least ambiguity. If there is no ambiguity then it is a matter of taste, usually dependent on whatever emotional scars were inflicted on you by your school teachers. - Matt Leifer
As a writer, I follow the maxim that everything is optional in English grammar except clarity. We create language; we're not subservient to it. - Rod Bauer
@Rod: Excellently put. The beauty of the English language is that it's living and evolving constantly. Language is an awesome gift. - Bob M. Montgomery from twhirl
Leave it to Akiva to bring up coprophagia. Leave it to me to know entirely too much about coprophagia and not have to look it up. - Sparky, lurking
I remember hearing that he did this, rather than signing autographs. - John E. Bredehoft
