I was thinking of this a few days ago. Having a stake in these companies gives us say. No one likes government intervention in the marketplace but the circumstance demand it. They have shown no will to adapt in even the most dire situations. The CEOs of these companies need oversight if we bail them out. Fine let's talk about unions but lets also talk about the jets and the CEO salaries, lavish expenses, parties and the other things mentioned in this post. Everything's on the table, not just this selective just this selective union bashing. Man, I agree with this piece. - Rolf Schewe
404 - mojay
@ Rolf: I agree. Somehow the fact that we have been blaming unions since Ronald Reagan seems to have become a knee-jerk reaction. The UAW negotiated away all their pension rights and created a union fund to take over the obligations. This new contract gets overlooked a lot. My point being that the white collars still have their jets but the guy who actually does the work has to be the one who gives up years of promises. People forget that before unions ideas such as "the fourty-hour week" and "the weekend" were never heard of. We don't need to make ourselves more like a third-world country. This is a race to the bottom and the guys who make millions are loving it. - Phil Boiarski
Phil Boiarski: I say let's look at everything. Not just bash the unions or the CEOs. No one is totally innocent here. The system has to be revamped top to bottom. CEO and worker pay, union contracts, Congress has to take care of health care to take the burden of these companies and these car companies will have to trim a lot of fat and focus on the future. A lot of top management may have to go. That old stubborn corrupted mindset and irresponsible leadership must be purged to assure a new direction. - Rolf Schewe
Sorry about the 404 -- fixed. - Dave Winer
Rolf, No argument that everything needs a look. My point is that Union bashing has been going on for years as the "solution" to our competitive problem. Not design choices, stubborn refusal to raise mpg, enormous bonuses and perks, etc. The Unions gave and gave again. The CEO's fly private jets and point fingers at others. Use this as an opportunity to remake the way we think about cars. - Phil Boiarski
The sad fact is that you'll get nothing for your gov't money. If you can show me a single success of gov't intervention/ownership, I can show you 100 utter and complete failures (Fannie/Freddie/HUD/etc). What's worse, the gov't doesn't even have any money anyway. You're simply choosing to postpone pain today (which isn't close to as bad as you predict) with even more pain tomorrow (when all those IOU's come due and no country is crazy enough to continue lending to us). - Carter Rabasa
"US initiative to increase gas mileage" ... The initiative a)didn't go far enough and b)was given a loophole to drive SUVs through - a loophole created by Detroit's lobbyists. - Steven Vore
Latest news is the Dems are demanding a restructuring plan before giving another penny. Would have been interesting if anyone thought of that when they were handing out checks to AIG and the biggest banks. - Phil Boiarski

Unless I missed the "Why", he's saying we should care because Apple's iPhone developer program is shrouded in secrecy and Google can do whatever they want? I thought these were established truths by now. - Mark Martinez via twhirl
What's most interesting to me about this is that Apple and Google have so much attention that this was worth writing or reading. Well, actually, I'm still not so sure about either. - Chris White

Poor guy. Can you imagine an ad with the gender roles reversed.

No doubt that guy had an alcoholic mother. - Dave Winer
Seems like a quite a leap Dave --is there logic? - Brian Sullivan
Is there a man-group to protest its blatant sexism. - Rex Hammock
Brian, just what I heard. This is a person who expects an explosion and is doing everything he can to contain it. See the fear on his face. Could be you see something else. Women do, for sure (I've heard women only hear an insult, saying he called her fat, but if you listen to the actual words, he never said it.) - Dave Winer
But these are actors with a script. Even if this were real it so seems like a conclusion based on no facts. - Brian Sullivan
It's an acceptable double standard. It's the same reason that 9/10 sitcoms feature a big, dumb husband and an all-knowing wife who's humoring him. If you reveresed that role, you'd have riots in the streets. - Bob M. Montgomery via twhirl
Bob, problem is that people emulate what they see on TV in real life relationships. Women wonder why they don't get the same response from real men that the women on TV get from the actors. If I were that guy, I might shut up, probably would, but I'd resent the hell out of it. - Dave Winer
Steve is obviously trying to undermine her sense of self worth by forcing her to consume copious quantities a fatty foods in an effort to keep her pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen. P.I.G. Pig. What Steve doesn't know is that he's raising twin sons sired by her Pilates instructor. You go, girl! - Christopher Harley
Christopher -- finally some humor! I wish more people would project wildly on that ad. - Dave Winer
I think the ad is probably designed for women, a fantasy -- if only men were so pliable and easily manipulated. This is what women would like us to be like. Always wrong, and willing to suffer humiliation and apologize and STFU all in one sentence! - Dave Winer
Yeah. What would Schopenhauer have to say about this? Let's find out > http://evans-experientialism.f... - Christopher Harley
Oh, and don't kill the messenger. ;P - Christopher Harley
Since there are no female voices in this conversation I'll add mine: Yes, the ad is "demeaning" to men, but it also makes women look unstable. I've never once accused my husband of calling me fat when he didn't outright say so. I hope I don't know any women who would bring that sort of unnecessary drama to their relationships. But these ads where women are going , "What's that supposed to mean?" give me a headache. Why can't people say what they say? - Anika Malone
Wait, Dave. You say "This is what women would like us to be like. Always wrong," Maybe ya shoulda said "This is what SOME women would like us to be like. Always wrong". I know you know this, but one word makes a big difference. I am a woman (not a mom) and I do not want a man to be ALWAYS wrong. Both ads were lame, and yes "demeaning", to moms in general, and men in general. The wife in the cereal ad irked me, I felt sorry for guy. ~ Peggy - openAllNight
Peggy, I hate to say this (I'm laughing as I do) -- but you're saying I was wrong, which sort of reinforces my point. I think it might be interesting to, for 24 hours, make a point of never saying that a man is wrong about something, you might be surprised at how integral it is to the way women think about men. To be clear I did say you *might* be -- but then I'm like Steve in the commercial, saying the box told me to shut up. :-) - Dave Winer
Oooh, snap! - Christopher Harley
Dave, I'll go 24 hours without saying a man is wrong if a man will do the same. As your comment goes to show, seeing the other gender as 'wrong' doesn't have anything to do with one being male or female. And to Bob: the current 'dumb husband' routine is a combination of pandering to women who control the purse strings and a paltry attempt at "making up for" 4 decades of TV where women "had some 'splanin' to do" every time they bought a new dress. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Tina, by wrong, I meant factually wrong; not wrong as in "he done me wrong." In English the word has at least two uses. - Dave Winer
Dave, I am laughing too. I swear, it is the first time in 10 or 15 years I told a man he was wrong.I like it! I like it a lot. You have unleashed the sleeping lioness. I hear ya point and raiseya. Too funny. I said, "Maybe ya shoulda said", and then maybe you heard "the box telling you to shut up". Not what you say, but how you say it. Seriously, most of our social relationships are thankfully progressing, not just men/women and of course still have a ways to go. I hope/trust a large % of husband/wife relationships have progressed passed the cereal box convo, but maybe not. Too, too funny because men/women convo can be difficult face2face. Like email, no facial expession, no inflection here. Adds the extra veil of intent, indignation, etc. We are convinced your group is not listening, your group is convinced we want you to be somone you are not, and the beat goes on. I AM thinking about the intregal part of thinking now though. - openAllNight
One of my many charms is that I say obvious things in funny ways. I've found it helps me get what I want, it's a good strategy for success. :-) - Dave Winer
looks like the multi is actually corn. Real cheerios sound healthier and only have 100 calories. Yes there is less fat but not by much and only mono/poly. - mal
Methinks it's clever to create commercial controversy. - Phil Boiarski

"Actually Tom I’m able to get 200 miles on a charge fairly easily with my Tesla Roadster. My commute is five miles a day, and with another trip or two thrown in a day (i.e. lunch, dinner, meeting, movie, whatever) that means I can charge it every 4-5 days. I just had my charger put in yesterday and with the low speed charger it takes 6-8 hours for a full charge and with high-speed charger it takes 3-4 hours. I actually think I’ll never have to buy/drive another car since I only do two or three road trips a year (i.e. San Diego), and when I do I can us my old Mini Cooper. 95% of folks drive less than 100 miles a day… so the Tesla 2.0 at 60k and 3.0 at 30k would do the trick. Additionally, battery life is getting better and better, so my guess is they will be able to get the range from 220+ to 350-400+ in two years. When the car gets to 400 miles a charge and under 50k then it really starts to make sense because the gas savings of 2-3k a year pays for the additional 15k of the car (or..." - Jason Calacanis
You were just saying the other day that Congress should give money to Tesla instead of the Big 3. Did you put them up to this? More importantly, does Tesla really need a bailout? How are they doing? And if they went out of business, it would have minimal impact on most people. - Richard Klein via twhirl
Day wouldn't be complete without a Jason/Tesla posting - Fleagle
200 miles on a charge is pretty good already for a car you use daily. I wonder if they can make cars for harder climates like Northern Europe. We have snow here already so the current model might actually have trouble over here in the winter. I postponed buying a new car as I hope that within 2 years there would be more hybrid/electric alternatives in the market. Only option currently is the Toyota Prius. I am not a big fan of that car. - Davide D'Incau
Yeah, bring on a version designed for harder climates, at 50k-60k and I'm there.! - Juho Tunkelo
