“After much harassment from friends, I'm finally attempting (again) to become a Mac convert. Does anyone have any suggested tools I *must* install on a new Mac?”
September 22 at 4:38 pm - Link
Webkit nightly build, VLC, and Adium. - Mona N.
VLC (video player, plays AVIs and WMVs), HandBrake (DVD ripping), TextWrangler (text editor), Skype, Firefox, InstantShot (screen grabs), iShowU (screen capture video), CyberDuck (FTP), ... etc. - Jason Kaneshiro
I have Adium. What's Webkit nightly build? - Tamar Weinberg
mate, you write for lifehacker & you're asking us?? - Zee. Just Zee.
http://perian.org/ I find that it makes Quicktime much better than even VLC. - Occasional Headbanger
+1 for Alex Scoble - James Herbert via twhirl
Whatever is FREE - Outsanity via fftogo
there's gotta be at least 3 "what to install on your new mac" posts - Zee. Just Zee.
Skitch. - Cyndy
VMWare - Outsanity via fftogo
Growl. - Phil Glockner
It depends on what you are going to do. - Mathew Ballard
have people just forgotten about Quicksilver? Still my most used app by a long way - Zee. Just Zee.
Windows Vista. Oh wait.... - qthrul
Zee, would you rather just roll with what a single blog post says, or hear it from the people who use this stuff daily to do much of the same things you will need to do? :) - ♫ Rahsheen™
If you use Onenote, Evernote is one alternative. - Rodfather
There's this one program that's like Photoshop but I forgot the name. It's 50-60 bucks - Outsanity via fftogo
what do you plan to do with it? we could tell you about all kinds of crap, but will it work for you? - tiffany
Oh, Skitch, too. - Mona N.
Chris Pirillo actually has a blog post on free Mac shit - Outsanity via fftogo
I've seen it, Outsanity. It's got too much stuff. I'm looking for 2-3 recommendations per FFer ;) - Tamar Weinberg
I cover Windows, Zee. Cmon, you know better. :P - Tamar Weinberg
I'm not sure what I'm doing with it yet. Right now, it's a toy to see if I'll be a Mac convert. (I won it in a contest.) I'll probably take it with me to conferences for liveblogging. - Tamar Weinberg
Oh - what FTP app do you use? - Tamar Weinberg
What Mona N said. - Paul W. Swansen
Installing stuff won't make you a convert. You've got to hang in there for a bit to get used to some of the changed usage... but the first thing I'd install - Firefox - Brian Roy
Linux. Oh wait... :P - possible248
Hellotxt.com web based. - Paul W. Swansen
@Rasheehn , have you seen the number of comments lifehacker posts gets...completely demolishes anything we could hand out here! :) - Zee. Just Zee.
I use Panic's Transmit http://panic.com - Adam Turetzky
I use Cyberduck for FTP & Coda for web stuff - Robert DeBord
@Tamar, no no :) I mean what your colleagues have written - Zee. Just Zee.
MS Bob, running on Parallels Desktop. - Josh Haley
The best solution is to get Chris Pirillo's phone #. You already know you can call me any time. We'll play Mac geek phone help. - Louis Gray
Zee, I've bookmarked several posts. I guess my question was more to the effect of "what software do you recommend that you use on a regular basis" versus software that we've blogged about that we've tried (but perhaps do not use consistently). - Tamar Weinberg
Are you looking for mostly free opensource toys or paid tools to do a specific job? Apps "I" use daily - Twitterific, NetNewsWire and Linkinus. - Adam Turetzky
You appear to write blogs, you should check out MarsEdit too. http://www.red-sweater.com/mar... - Adam Turetzky
Transmit, Adium, TextMate, Growl, Quicksilver, iTerm, MacPorts. But it depends on how you use a computer. I'd personally recommend not installing much of anything for a week or two and just learn about what is native to OS X. It's far more capable than a bare Windows install. - ·[▪_▪]·
If you forgive me pimping my blog here, I wrote a post on this topic a year ago http://seanreiser.com/MacSoftw... - Sean Reiser via twhirl
Cool. Self-promotion is fine -- as long as it gives me answers ;) - Tamar Weinberg
Oh... and if you need look at css edit (http://macrabbit.com/cssedit/) I need to update that list - Sean Reiser via twhirl
Fugu for FTP/SSH. And if all you are doing is quickie image editing, Seashore does the job. Open source. You also want NeoOffice. And I vote to leave Growl OFF... I'm still trying to uninstall it. I have much hate for Growl. - Cyndy
@Cyndy all you have to do to remove a preference pane in OS X is control(right)-click on it's icon in System Preferences and a popup will appear under your cursor that says "remove xxxx pane" and that's it. Although I don't know why such hate for growl, it's one of the coolest notifiers. Especially with the iPhonesque but to each their own. :) http://macthemes2.net/forum/vi... - Adam Turetzky
Skitch for image handling, Filezilla for FTP (if you're coming from Windows, you'll feel more comfortable with it). adium if you like IM, Twhirl for Twitter, Firefox for browsing....that should set you up. I'd recommend trying iWork as well instead of Office, nice package. - Duncan Riley
loic le meur had a list a couple of weeks ago on ff ... - Gregory Lent
After a lifetime of Windows I recently switched to an 24 inch iMac. It's like when you were a kid and your mom bought the generic brand fruit loops with the retarded bird on the box because it was cheaper. Then one day she springs for the good stuff, and then there's no turning back. Adium is a great mac only IM client. Try that. - Seamus Condron
quicksilver...by far my most used app. - Tim Wright
Thanks all. :) - Tamar Weinberg
Lightroom? - Thomas Hawk
Perian is quite good. VLC can be buggy. Flip4mac if doing streaming. Affrus for PERL development and cocoamysql for db access. - Andrew Leyden

"We leveraged up and if you have a 20 percent fall in value of a $20 trillion asset, that’s $4 trillion. And when $4 trillion lands — losses land in the wrong part of this economy, it can gum up the whole place.” People should have known better but in some way’s it’s unavoidable with markets: “People should always know better. … I mean people — people don’t get — they don’t get smarter about things that get as basic as greed and you can’t stand to see your neighbor getting rich. You know you’re smarter than he is, and he’s doing these things, you know, and he’s getting rich, and your spouse is getting unhappy with you because you aren’t doing — pretty soon you start doing it. And so you get what I call the natural progression, the three I’s: the innovators, the imitators, and the idiots. And that’s what happens. Everybody just kind of goes along. And you look kind of silly if you disagree." - Paul Buchheit via Bookmarklet
Can someone please engrave this on a plaque somewhere? Maybe we could have it etched into some tablets from the mountaintop and have churches predicated on these words. - Christopher Sacca
Right on! Yep, i am very "silly" ...not a jonesy type anymore.... we gave away much of our "cool stuff" and now have a mimimalist home ...MUCH BETTER and the best part, no stinking debt, except house and 1 car. The bank was all too ready to sock us deep into debt. We decided against that and are very happy with our decision to borrow only half what was offered (more realistic with cushion to $pare) - Susan Beebe
Unsure imitators and idiots don't simply continue on their merry way under bailout. - AJ Kohn
@AJ all the bailout does is buy time. We're merely delaying the inevitable, I think. If the imitators and the idiots keep doing what they're doing, we'll just be right back here again, except probably even worse off. - Victor Ganata
@Victor: Sadly, I agree. - AJ Kohn
Warren gets it, and he's a pretty straight shooter. These are the kind of heartland values politicians should be espousing. - Logical Extremes

A lot of people have criticized Paulson, here's what Buffett says: "I don’t think you can have a better secretary of the Treasury than Hank Paulson … he knows markets, he knows corporations’ work, he knows money, and he’s got the interests of the country at heart." - Sanjeev Singh

An endangered species, perhaps? - Roberto Bonini
Not every conservative is the humorless, bumpkin douche you guys imagine we are. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Aw, c'mon, Mark. We don't think you're a bumpkin. - Steven Perez
Perhaps the car belongs to Gabriel Schwartz: http://www.cosmictap.com/gabri... - Anthony Citrano
Its Sarah Palin's car, isn't it? - JC unwired
I'd say it depends on what kind of car these stickers are on. The toyota prius, I don't believe. A Chrysler? Maybe... - Clare Dibble
F A I L - JA Castillo
It's a Prius, same as the one Igor found I think. Mark, I wasn't suggesting that anyone is humorless -- I'm just skeptical that this person actually supports McCain. - Paul Buchheit
@Paul: you should read IMAO.US. This is the sort of conservative humor you'll find there. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
I'm positive that this person is against McCain, and has a sense of humor. :) - Chris White
I think there actually was a plan to nuke the moon back in the day. http://www.guardian.co.uk/scie... - Paul Buchheit

it's real Paul, I just drove down a side street in Princeton, NJ and counted 7 M/P signs and 2 O/B. In a college town, in a deep blue state. It made me very sad. - Sarah Miller
Sarah, it's the "More War for OIL" sticker that makes me doubt that this particular person is a real McCain supporter. - Paul Buchheit
it's real Paul, I just drove down a side street in Princeton, NJ and counted 7 M/P signs and 2 O/B. In a college town, in a deep blue state. Sry Paul, I read to quickly. I recently saw some bumper stickers that said "free our oil" that weren't a joke. - Sarah Miller
Disgusting. - Mo Kargas
omfg what is wrong with these oilers - Kyle Weller
Oh....the outrage! Not. - Peter Simard
"More War for Oil" -- it sounds very much like the sentiment of a Free Republic denizen or Michael Savage fan -- defiantly fascist and in your face, and dead serious. Most "conservatives" these days are completely humorless and fanatically anti-conservative. (I've heard neoconservative McCain supporters call for first-strike nuclear attacks on Muslim and Arab nations.) - Sean McBride
Sent him to war and pray he dies for his country :) - Ryo
The neoconservative (anti-conservative) cult which produced Ann Coulter, Free Republic, Michael Savage, Michelle Malkin, Pat Robertson, John Hagee and Pamela Geller would easily embrace bumper stickers which read "More War for Oil." It sounds very Ann Coulterish. Visit the Media Matters for America website http://mediamatters.org/ for an analysis of many examples of neocon extremist speech and hate speech. Many of these people are agitating furiously to expand the Iraq War to Iran. - Sean McBride
Ann Coulter: "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity." Think she's kidding? Does the Iraq War look like a joke? It's difficult for sane people to understand that neoconservatives are NOT kidding when they make insane statements. They're insane. Irony is a blue state thing, a coastal elites thing. The red state mentality never rises above heavy sarcasm. - Sean McBride
Btw, Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins still doesn't understand the radical distinction between conservatives and neoconservatives. Hopkins is no conservative. - Sean McBride
Seems to echo his promise of war for a hundred years... securing all that oil! - Samuel Buick
If I had a Prius, I would put these bumper stickers on also AS A JOKE. I guess Obama supporters and neoconservatives have the same sense of humor. - Chris White
Chris White - you're making the assumption that Prius owners can't be John McCain supporters. Not true. McCain has a record of aggressive pro-environmentalism. I suppose we could contact the owner of the car via the DMV to discover the true intent behind the stickers. :) - Sean McBride
.Prius owner AND John McCain supporter [instances] * // probably not an empty set - Sean McBride
Sean, read what I wrote. I made no such assumption. - Chris White
Chris - sorry if I misunderstood you. Can you restate your thought? - Sean McBride

@AJKohn I'm sensing a conspiracy... Right wingers claiming the polls are so far tipped to Obama that voters don't bother showing up... Therefore, come January 2009, Mccain takes the oath of office. - Prolific Programmer
@Prolific: I don't know if it's a conspiracy but I know that you don't stop pedaling when you get close to the top of a mountain (I'm a cyclist). Instead you keep going as hard as you can and pedal through the top and only let up when you're actually going down the hill. The shorter version: Let's not get cocky. - AJ Kohn
Fantastic News!!! I will continue to Work Hard to make damn sure Obama WINS!!! No time to let up!!! ;)) Peace* - Billy Warhol
AJ Kohn is right - Obama must pedal hard and keep the pressure on McCain. I reckon the McCain camp is really feeling the pressure now and there's nothing like being behind with the finish line in sight to make your gonads feel like they are being crushed in a vice - Trevor Cook

Not long to go! - Andrew Trinh
And what a fine one it is! Congrats - Michael Fidler
it'd definitely going to take me a while to get to a million. I'm publishing about 200 photos to flickr a week right now and at this pace it will take 92 years to get there. I'll get the pace up to 400-500 a week in the future though. Better technology should make processing easier and someday my kids will be grown and I'll be able to quit my day job and focus on this even more. The best photos have yet to be taken. - Thomas Hawk
When I think about this I realize your best days are ahead of you. - Russellreno
That is a great photo - Darin aka iGoByDoc
What's your shot/publish ratio? I mean, on average how many shots do you take to produce those you publish? - Yuval Atzmon
atzmon, I probably average about 2,000 shots a week that I shoot. And I'm probably processing 300 or so of those a week at present, so I'm probably keeping about 15%. The other 85% never get processed and are kept in my archives. I'm trying only to process and publish the shots that I think meet a certain quality criteria. - Thomas Hawk
You upload a lot more than I do. I have about 40,000 pictures but only about 2000 uploaded. Mostly because I have not gotten around to processing more. =) - Jauder Ho via twhirl
Wow and Congrats!! - Vox
Dude, you're a machine. - Zee. Just Zee.
Jauder, the good news is that processing will only get easier in the future. I've watched it get better with each successive Adobe release. Lightroom 2.0 is the best processing tool yet. It's not necessarily faster per se though because with more tools there are yet even more ways to tweak a photo hence even more time. But the tools to speed things up are coming too. auto geotagging, better anti dust tech, faster processing speeds, easier online tools with faster broadband are all around the corner. - Thomas Hawk
