"A very interesting topic and something that I have discussed at detail over the years. There are so many factors at play here, as you say, including the popularity of supermarkets, rise in fuels costs, parking costs etc. The migration from high street sales to online is to be expected as all new ordering methods become available to consumers that can make the process easier. The number of 'customers' stays the same but their options of ordering become wider and the number of companies they can order from increases. I think we may just have to expect that in 10 - 15 years time high street shopping may be redundant unless it can offer something that we don't get from online. Really, that's to try products out, the personal service (which can be hit and miss) and the fun of the activity. there is a big challenge for retailers to think through how they can make people use the high street more, but then, if they are getting 40% order increases through their website with less operating..."
