"A very interesting topic and something that I have discussed at detail over the years. There are so many factors at play here, as you say, including the popularity of supermarkets, rise in fuels costs, parking costs etc. The migration from high street sales to online is to be expected as all new ordering methods become available to consumers that can make the process easier. The number of 'customers' stays the same but their options of ordering become wider and the number of companies they can order from increases. I think we may just have to expect that in 10 - 15 years time high street shopping may be redundant unless it can offer something that we don't get from online. Really, that's to try products out, the personal service (which can be hit and miss) and the fun of the activity. there is a big challenge for retailers to think through how they can make people use the high street more, but then, if they are getting 40% order increases through their website with less operating..." - Adam Tudor

Re: Latest UK guidance for EU cookie law - http://www.smartinsights.com/marketp...
"A great overview of the upcoming issues and workaround advice. I agree that the new legislation will be very problematic - it will annoy users as they are browsing the web, reduce visibility of tracking and performance tools, affect advertising, and the list goes on and on. However, getting permission from someone as you track, record, and serve them content based on their actions seems like a sensible thing to do. We don't do this in high street stores (cctv consent?), but I suppose if this were tv channels that were being monitored to serve you more relevant advertising, you'd need consent first, and it makes sense. The only real solution to this is through the browsers - getting them to cover all of the issues off in one simple opt in on browser update / install. Can you really imagine having to opt in to each website separately on each visit? And if someone has cleared your cookies previously? I can see the annoyance being immense, even when just normally browsing the web." - Adam Tudor

Re: Xbox Companion for Windows Phone coming December 6th - http://majornelson.com/2011...
"Bit of a debatable tactic - release on windows phones only so everyone will go out and buy one!! Nope.  95%+ of the market already has a smart phone operating on another system, so they all just think *rubbish!* for not making it available on other systems.  Shutting out the market to tempt them to buy your products is not a viable selling strategy.   Distribution to wider networks, more apps on more phones, just like more consoles in more homes is a winning strategy,  Looking forward to a cross platform release of this soon." - Adam Tudor

Re: Exclusive: Smoked out: tobacco giant's war on science - http://www.independent.co.uk/news...
"Completely agree. The government mess around and pander so much so smokers - removing signs, marketing material, ban this, under-age that, no packaging this all to have slight percentage reductions in the total number of smokers. Either - leave smokers alone and get on with your life. Or -  ban it outright.  Stop spending all this money and just classify it as a class B drug, problem solved, to be undertaken in 2020.  Gives people plenty of notice. As has been mentioned though, health costs will rise as a result.  People live longer and later life illnesses (dementia etc) cost considerably more to treat than lung cancer in young people.  With the removal of smoking tax also, we would have to source some extra cash from somewhere to make up the difference." - Adam Tudor

"A business asks for access to government funded market research in order to better serve their customers needs and reach potential new customers. Businesses all over the world need market research to function and be successful, the only difference in this case if the research was gov funded and the product has health implications. Even so, it's entirely legal so I don't see people's problems with 'omg! how dare that company try to be successful the dirty smokers!' They have been operating in this area for years, legally as a successful business. If you don't like smoking, then why not just call for a ban and get it overwith instead of griping about how horrible they are?I don't think FOI requests should be granted for businesses who want to know the information for their own profit. If they are going to use the information to generate revenue, then their request should be denied as they are freeloading off the gov - OR they should be given access to the information, but should have to..." - Adam Tudor

Re: Why SEO disgusts me - http://www.disqus.com/people...
"Ah comment spamming for SEO.  Most blog and forum comments now use the nofollow tag, which generally makes this practise quite pointless.  However some companies still persist as a way to show off their links to clients even though the links they have been generating (and charging a premium for) provide no natural search benefit.  I recommend implementing the nofollow tag onto your blog links if you have the control within your CMS. Unfortunately this is not the fault of SEO, it's cowboy companies that are conducting poor quality services.  There are much more effective methods of link generation, this method really is the bottom of the barrel stuff. Customer reviews, twitter followers, and facebook fans, if you've got the money you can now easily buy all of these things, it's just a trend within the industry unfortunately.  As something gets more popular, dodgy types come in and try to exploit systems for profit." - Adam Tudor

Re: How important is the Meta Title? - http://www.disqus.com/people...
"I think there's a bit of confusion here around titles.. META titles are different to page titles. The article above seems to be talking about page titles but names it the 'meta title'. Meta titles are actually quite different to the page titles, included in the meta data only and are rarely used by search engines these days. Page titles which is what you are discussing above are far more important like you say, I'd just rename the article 'page titles' instead of 'meta titles'. Hope that makes sense. See: http://www.webmarketingnow.com... http://themeaningofweb.blogspo... for some more information. Cheers, Adam" - Adam Tudor
