this article is a start. would like to all see one that really digs into how to tag photos (suggestions for popular tags like 'colorful' / 'panoramic') and groups to share your photos. this is another way to bring in additional comments and flow to your photos. this article is a start, but we need the missing manual for flickr.
- Jeff Sandquist
Jeff, missing manual for Flickr is a great idea. Wonder if someone's written something like that.
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
I like Flickr, but I wish there was a way to embed an automatically list of Collections or Sets on my own site. I want to give visitors to my site a quick overview of all the different types of picture I'm taking, so that they can delve in if they have an interest. Maybe if they provided an RSS feed for Sets and Collections something could be done. Anyone else feel the same?
- Andrew Shuttleworth
from FriendFeed MT Plugin
Shawn, almost everybody is there right now. Now, I go over the ground like a magnet getting black sand and pull you up. :-)
- Louis Gray
About half way through the new FF curve (Decided the do the revisit Facebook thing today instead) but definitely a dramatic improvement now that there's lots more people here. Wait, does that say Techie??
- Charlie Anzman
I suppose this is inevitable and an almost must-do for folks with too many follows. Even though I only subscribe to about 90+ folks here, I can feel the noise creeping in at times too, and have wondered if I should use the lists more proactively. But like cleaning up an inbox, it would take time to do it.. Well, at least I have one list right now - a list of all my colleagues. And, I think you have a good process there in sorting your follows.
- Winston Teo
Avdi, the idea is as it says, to take the high traffic out and better reveal those who need more attention. Anybody here will say I treat A-List and Z-List the same...
- Louis Gray
I'm updating my lists as a I go along. I'm basically on the main feed, and my lists Awesome Pix and Enterprise 2.0 a lot. Will continue to refine these over time.
- Hutch Carpenter
Slippy, you need to recruit your real-world friends into FriendFeed.
- Ernie Oporto
i love the lists, give me access to much more info quicker
- MG Siegler
Louis, excellent post as I happily find each time I read your blog! :) This list concept is really a great feature of FF and I am glad you're liking it. I need to fine tune mine some more... but it really does help deliver the best content to me and I am incredibly grateful for the filtering this provides...very neat! Thanks!
- Susan Beebe
"At work and at home, I file all my e-mail. For example, I have top level folders for "Personal", "Family", "Commerce", and "Blog", and thinking of people on FriendFeed the same way isn't that much of a stretch." I never thought about it quite that way before. Nice post. Thanks
- Roberto Bonini
I am thrilled that FF offered the list functionality, but as a result, I've found myself looking at my "favorites" list 95% of the time and the other lists 5% of the time, so it's almost the equivalent to unsubscribing from most of my list. Then again, maybe that's not a bad thing. It avoids hurt feelings, it gives me an out, and I feel less drowned.
- Adam Lasnik
I'm sure it's a necessity for ppl with a huge # of subs; I'd rather not think about it cuz I know I'm "back page" material. Ah well. ;\
- Kimberly J
Kim, the "Back Page" is just a good way to sort. If I put you next to Scoble, maybe I miss it.
- Louis Gray
I still have yet to organize my lists..
- Kyle Lacy
I usually create too many lists and categories and after awhile find I only look at a few so i consolidate. still trying to find the balance.
- Lorraine Ball
FFHolic.com is publicly launched for beta. We still have hundreds of things to do. During our beta launch please report any problem you experience. And of course your ideas...
Showing the most popular people just reinforces the "contest" mentality. As you have data at your disposal to activity per user (comments/likes, etc.) wouldn't it make more sense to also show most active individuals and show correlations between popularity and activity?
- Louis Gray
Your FF Badge is rather long on the width side
- Outsanity
@Louis Gray: That's a great idea thank you.
- FFholic.com
@Jim McCusker: We are working on that problem. Thank you.
- FFholic.com
The lists of "most-liked items by person X" are very incomplete (but I love the feature!). Is this due to API limits? See some data on my account at http://friendfeed.com/e.... I have 8+ items with 50+ likes, but FFholic only listed 2 of them.
- Mitchell Tsai
Thank you Mitchell, please feel free to write anything you like. If you have questions you can contact us anytime by the email link provided on the site. Thanks again.

Is anyone like me becoming increasingly alarmed that maybe as a nation we are starting to forget 9/11 as the years go by? Perhaps it's my imagination. But I will never ever forget how I felt that day and where I was. I still choke up when I watch the footage. Those jerks are still out there eager to kill us all. This is the #1 factor in who gets my vote.
- Steve Rubel
from Bookmarklet
Steve, kinda agree with you, especially since I took a flight from DC to CA that very morning and spent the day trying to track down a cousin who worked in the complex. But you also need to ask a simple question. How could a country that had the entire world behind it at the time manage to get the world against it so quickly.
- Deepak Singh
@Chiara you can't. But people don't talk about 9/11 like we used to. Some of that is healthy, but I worry people think it won't happen again because it's been so many years w/o an attack on US soil. I think about it every time I get on a plane (which is often). And often when I commute into Manhattan - at least in passing.
- Steve Rubel
I wonder how much of it is due to certain organizations, on both sides of the political spectrum, using it for purely partisan political gain. Maybe the images has been so associated with things removed from the events of the actual day people just block it. I will never forget, I just sometimes want to be able to choose how I remember...
- Johnny
John - I agree with you. The act was horrible, inconceivable. In a way, whenever anyone in politics who invokes it for any reason other than to humbly respect history, from Rudy to Bush to anyone, I kinda wish they wouldn't.
- Phil Glockner
Memory fades and softens with time. Eventually Mel Brooks will make a comedy about 911. The big question is "exactly what are we supposed to remember about that day?" The horrible way that we all felt? The damage that it did to all of us as a nation? The way that we came together for a brief moment in history only to be separated again by the politicians that used it to sow fear and as a reason to start a war we couldn't afford? The problem is that recent history has muddied what 911 means for all of us.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
@John Worthington: At times 9/11 has become to political. 9/11 wasn't a Republican event and it wasn't a Democrat event. It was an American tragedy that effected the world. Politicians may disagree on how to fight the war on terror but it should be understood, in my own opinion, that most of the politicians want to eliminate the threats over advancing their own career. At least I hope so.
- ChiliMac
Steve, those jerks are sitting on US soil running our country... FYI: the US government.
- Michael Forian
I don't think there was a lot of hand wringing about invoking Pearl Harbor during WWII. No matter how much you want to depoliticize this event, the people who did this were motivated politically in the classical sense, not the bullshit sanctimonious partisan way. To down play it for political gain is even worse, somehow more cynical.
- Oldengrey (Jay)
Steve, it may be a good time for us to help build a UGC type of site to remember the attacks. I have photos somewhere; we should all share it on a single site (or dispersed among many) to remember.
- Tamar Weinberg
@Tamar somehow I thought several existed. I don't have photos from that day. Pre-cameraphone.
- Steve Rubel
Steve, I don't think the majority of people will ever forget, even if they didn't lose anyone themselves. Frankly, I hate to see it used to justify some truly un-American attitudes and actions.
- Ha3rvey (heavy duty)
Steve, I don't think anyone alive then will ever forget.
- Ramona Bates
My memories are vivid as it was my son's 4th birthday. It's actually the only birthday of his that I remember in such great, and sad, detail. Ironically, it's also my finacee's birthday, so between Barb and Tyler, I'm sure to never forget. I did take the kids to Ground Zero two years ago... I think it's important that they see this tragedy at various times in their lives.
- Kevin C. Tofel
I sure as hell don't know anyone who was around on that day who's anywhere near forgetting. I don't think "remembering" means "being angry, fearful, vindictive and irrational", though, which is how I think I'm being told to feel a lot of the time.
- Nathan Rein
I lost a friend in one the planes. She was returning from dropping her beautiful twin daughters at college. I am still sick and angry.
- Oldengrey (Jay)
how could I forget being taken in by the federales as a terrorist for being a Jew in Mexico after 911... my family were evicted from their co-op by panicked leftists in NYC and arson in my building that was blamed on me because of the Anti-semitism that erupted in the city... those that survived the event experienced some bizarre drama. thank g-d it ended up ok and almost comical from my end. still listening to freaks online talk about conspiracies still... almost laughable. I knew people in the building
- NoahDavidSimon
I tried to turn my experience into a comic book. it is on my blog http://simonstudiotheatre.blogspot.com/2007... that was the experience that changed me. before I was only interested in sex drugs and rock n roll... I got a job after all that.
- NoahDavidSimon
The no. 1 factor in who gets your vote? Do you perceive one party as better at national security than the others? I have not forgotten 9/11 at all, and that's all the more reason why I'm voting for Obama. The Republican Party under the Bush Admin., supposedly the party that would protect us from future incidents, has done an abysmal job, squandering our human and financial resources in a totally immoral, misguided war that takes away our military, focus, treasure and other resources from protecting us.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
@Cathryn I am not sure who has the better policy here. McCain is trying to distance himself from Bush in some ways but not others. What I keep thinking is: who will ensure this never happens again. I don't have an answer yet and it keeps me undecided.
- Steve Rubel
it's one thing to "not forget" 9/11 - that's important. it's entirely something else to "overload" the meaning "9/11" for political gain. let's just pass up the chance to rattle sabers, make the citizenry fearful, and offend others around the world. pearl harbor is not a day to hate japan or convince people to vote a certain way. let's be sure to remember the vitcims, the heroes, and the families of 9/11 and give them the respect and admiration they deserve.
- MikeAmundsen
Still amazes me how fast all those flags came down. Even in an event like this. It's like the country was united for a week. Sad.
- Charlie Anzman
I think the truth is that no one can make sure it never happens again anymore than anyone can stop hurricanes. Our security system is very reactive and not very good at stopping "innovative" attacks. Plus it's often so hard to know what the good intelligence is, so it's likely that attackers will eventually fall through the cracks of our anti-terrorist system again.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
9/11 will always hold a special place in my heart and prayers - I worked at the WTC for CSFB when I was in finance and then later in life, 9/11/2001 was supposed to be one of the happiest days in my life - little did i know 2 hrs after the happiness, the worst sadness would follow.
- Allen Stern
the "flags came down", Charlie? Where was this? The flags are still up in the small town in Pennsylvania where i live.
- Nathan Rein
I never do. That day had an impact on me - i was supposed to fly, we couldn't find friends in the city, etc. I don't think i'll ever forget.
- Patricia
Nathan - I too live in a small town in PA at the moment (most of the time). The last time I made a distinction between rural and urban America, the whole conversation went crazy. Yes, the flags fly here too ... and no I don't expect them on the cars like they were. Let's just say ... on my two recent trips to NYC, it felt GREAT to see the city so alive. It took a few years to happen ... but it really did feel great!
- Charlie Anzman
Haven't forgotten. Still pissed we diverted attention away from the terrorists.
- AJ Kohn
we have successfully kept our country free of a terrorist attack since. I guess 911 was a wake up call... not only for me, but for a whole mind set of pacifism that failed us.
- NoahDavidSimon
Regarding future attacks, I'd suggest reading this recent report from August 15,2008 regarding Al Qaeda. The last pages give a chilling warning regarding the potential reconstitution of Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. http://tinyurl.com/5u94po
- Jim McCusker
so you buy the bush/mccain fud. that's disappointing
- rob zand
I just wanted to say I loved reading these comments. I am happy to know that a lot of the folks on FF are smart, independent and still very patriotic. .. I wrote more but I deleted it, that's all I want to say. Just, thanks.
- Phil Glockner
I'll never forget it. Wife was working a few blocks away from Pentagon, daughter was in daycare a few miles away. Watched smoke arising as I was stuck in traffic on Chain Bridge trying to get to her. I visited Shanksville last summer, some pics on flickr, http://is.gd/2kXe.
- Larry Huffman
Never forget. Never forget the speed with which our leaders moved to restrict personal liberty and increase surveillance.
- Mr. Gunn
@Steve maybe they do exist, but they're certainly not very popular if so! I'd love t see a list of sites.
- Tamar Weinberg
@gabybenkwitz i do sleep but i am an early riser, sometimes i catch my west coast friends still up on twitter when i get up in the morning
- Fred Wilson
Somehow I lost your feed. I keep forgetting to add you when I'm on my laptop. Glad ff keeps sending me your links.
- Andrew Warner
"More and more, the offline world (a.k.a. the real world, meatspace or atom-arena) is adjusting to and mirroring the increasingly dominant online world, from tone of voice to product development to business processes to customer relationships."
- Steve Rubel
Steve: That makes no sense. Closure of Gulf oil production and fear of damage to the rigs and pipelines, not to mention refineries, should push the price up, not pull it down.
- Roberto Bonini
IMO the new high for oil is a result of combined effect of Russian (25% of Europe's oil coming from Russia) frictions with the West + continuous unrest and instability in ME and Iran + increasingly perceived bad shape of American economy.
- Hayk
Well, I could say they're just skinning Webkit and adding some more on top. Just like Avant 'extended' the IE engine. I don't see how this could be a big deal.
- Yuvi
I kept hearing about a gBrowser from AlbinoBlackSheep.com
- Outsanity
Please, please, not ANOTHER browser to test sites against :( OK, it's Webkit, but that V8 is damn new :( OMG
- Claudio Cicali
Yuvi - How could it NOT be a big deal? This is Google we're talking about here.
- Steve Isaacs
@Steve - in the same way Picasa isn't? I mean, if it were a brand new rendering engine, from the ground up, I'll fight to be the first to say WOW. Webkit derivative? Meh.
- Yuvi
By itself perhaps not going to add drmatically to what is already in the market, but imagine if Google puts not only Gears and Webkit, but also plugs into the browser some/most of its other online tools such as text editors, calendars, reader, translator, etc. All in one - all open source. Wouldnt that be cool?
- Hayk
IMHO, Chrome will have to be sufficiently different and better than IE, FF, and whatever else to gain traction. Otherwise, why would any mainstream user bother to change?
- Mark Dykeman
If google did't really and did it well then say bye to Microsoft
- Ahmed Ramy Zaky
from twhirl
@Ahmed - Absolutely! If we get a better Browser than IE Microsoft is doomed! </sarcasm>
- Yuvi
Until large corporations dump Windows, Office and software en masse, Microsoft isn't going anywhere, regardless of how good or useful Chrome is. Why? Because cloud computing puts too much stuff outside of the corporation's firewall and direct control. It's just against the grain of the culture. Let me put this another way: how much of Google's staggering array and collection of documents, generated by Google for Google, are really out in the cloud? I'm willing to bet that an awful lot of it isn't.
- Mark Dykeman
Knol, Chrome. Are these signs of Google losing its 'authenticity' touch, becoming a follower (imitator) rather than a leader?
- Yung-Hui Lim
Mark, you are right. Google is not cut to make corporate scale apps. It does fun stuff, free stuff. One of the top Googlers - forgot his name - who left Microsoft for Google and spent there a year, went back to Microsoft . In his blog he told how there are probs in quality and looks and style are given more thought and attention than reliability and functionality. But if Google puts a huge amount of those "useless" apps under one roof and makes a good promo, maybe Chrome will gain some ground. only some.
- Hayk
I'm not all that impressed yet but I'm reserving all of my incredibly influential opinions until I mess with it myself.
- Akiva
I will say that Chrome is an interesting development, if only because it gives us some ideas at what Google's management team is thinking about and where they want to do. I just think that there has to be a HUGE value in the new tool before most people will change. It would be neat if somehow Google could make a browser that didn't need to be installed on a PC, but I have no idea how you'd do that.
- Mark Dykeman
I guess nobody remembers 2005 when everyone fell all over themselves because Google was doing some kind of earth-shattering deal with Sun that was going to destroy Microsoft and end the world as we know it. If Google announced they were going to make ice cream, people would be all, OMG! Google ice cream! It's going to be the best ice cream ever! Even though it will only be available in...
- Karim
it's definitely a a big deal for kiosk or International travel, now I'd be be able to bypass proxies/GreatFireWalls, but on the corporate side of life...it creates a hurdle...how to block? people should be working, not bypassing the corporate filtering.
- clarke thomas
+1 Karim!!! - you know Google ice cream may not be that bad... I could see Ben & Jerry getting in on that action.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge

Tomorrow is chrome download day! Firefox is buggy!
- Ron
It was pretty clear that Google was up to something once they started hiring Mozilla engineers. I mean, Google didn't hire people like Ben Goodger just to write Firefox extensions.
- Paul Grav
I'm not sure it's a huge deal either. V8 seems to compare to Squirrelfish which was announced in the beginning of June. They are splitting things into separate processes which might make things more resistant when stuff crashes. I'm not sure I buy all their arguments from the comic. You might be able to see which pieces of the browser are using memory, but it will be hard to track total usage. I don't understand why they can't launch mac and linux at the same time to grab the momentum.
- Charles
www.google.com/chrome remains dark at this time.
- Robert Linthicum
@Robert, Google loves that strategy of building suspense. They always "leak" some information or let the online community buzz for some time - spinning all kinds of stories before launching their products. This mystical air and suspense building has to do with human psychology and it pays off well in all industries and especially when coming up with new products or services! Google always fully exploits this!
- Hayk
If this means we can stop talking about Palin and about the iPhone I'm all for it!

The browser itself doesn't excite me. It seems ok, and when it is eventually released on the Mac, I'll certainly give it a try. What does excite me though, is the prospect of IE losing even more market share.
- Paul Grav
I installed the IE beta today. It is interesting and a definite improvement, but I wasn't blown away by it. Fortunately, it locked up, and I had to remove it.
- Michael Fidler
I was just looking at a couple of large multi touch monitors. If this is where monitors are going, the browser that works best in that environment will have a leg up on their competition. Side Note: I was just wondering if you are still thinking about doing a follow piece with the brilliant storytelling photographer(can't remember his name), it was mesmerizing!
- Michael Fidler
Webapps that can launch "in their own streamlined window." Could this include AIR-like Twitter tools? Will Google Docs start to feel more like a real alternative to MS Office for non-power users?
- Kevin Sablan
I'm wondering if this means that, once released on the Mac, Chrome will not be the sort of browser that chokes when the Flash player crashes.
- Paul Grav
Wouldn't a browser also close-the-loop for Google in terms of browsing behavior metrics if they're able to get a representative market share?
- Jim McCusker
I like it. Even if it is Webkit with something on top, at least I can just install it and use it. Seems extremely fast so far.
- ComicList
It's fast, but it wouldn't cooperate when I tried to post to my Myspace blog. But then again, it is a beta.
- ComicList
Twitter Search is a powerful tool for businesses, once you learn how to search, and once you better understand the terms your prospective customers might use on Twitter.

How many times this will appear here? :) Double entries are really THE #1 thing to solve on FF. Btw, I like the article though.

The challenge is participation. I've created a room for my company (Interwoven) and although I have lots of co-workers (including our President) subscribed to the room, I have almost no participation from anyone but me. I continue to share and encourage others to share but I can't seem to get the momentum I was hoping for.
