"If you use the mobile Google Maps application on a phone that has GPS, you're sending Google real-time traffic information. "When you choose to enable Google Maps with My Location, your phone sends anonymous bits of data back to Google describing how fast you're moving. When we combine your speed with the speed of other phones on the road, across thousands of phones moving around a city at any given time, we can get a pretty good picture of live traffic conditions," explains Google." - arnaldostream from Bookmarklet
I had to comment on this. I have wonderful uses for such data. I hope they'd let us have some of the data we give them back. - Dustin Sallings

Question/Rant: AT&T says it must prohibit Skype & other VOIP services over 3G on iPhone b/c it's too much for it's network to handle. Putting that being BS aside, does anyone know the logic behind them allowing Skype over 3G if your using a laptop with an AT&T 3G wireless card. I'm not following AT&T's logic except that they can extort more $
ATT-Quicksilver-USB-Connect-Card.jpg
Does there need to be any other reason? I doubt there is one. This is one of the companies, after all, that charges basic SMS at the rate of about $1,000,000,000 for a terabyte, while the same volume of data can be FedEx'ed on a new hard disk for $100. - Tinfoil 2.0
I believe if you look at the TOS, you are in breach of contract to use VoIP apps even on a laptop using a WWAN broadband modem from them. That said, I suspect many people do. After all, I run Skype all the time as much for IM as I do for VoIP. This is purely a case of them trying to protect old business models. Running VoIP over data is probably the same or less over-the-air data as an... more... - Christopher A. Wichura
The reason? Phone companies don't need a reason. - Brome
It's just a shame for consumers b/c if there wasn't a barrier to entry with the infrastructure costs etc... a company like AT&T trying to save their dying business model would have died away years ago. But because their government subsidized and their are barriers to entry - consumers get the shaft as we wait for AT&T to screw us as they die a slow but certain death. They have to realize that their destiny is to be a non-consumer facing datapipe - like the public water company. - Mike Bracco
Well, I think it's not just cost ... look at how many of the devices there are. Ask anyone who has an iPhone whether AT&T's network can handle all their users using VOIP and video streaming apps ;-) - Joel Bennett
Clark: Ok I get that but it's not really a cost issue I don't think. If it was, then they would offer iPhone users a $60 data plan that allowed the Skype app to use 3G - But they don't. They are just protecting their old business model. - Mike Bracco
If the issue is that the network would die if every iPhone user used VOIP then fine - limit access by just making it really expensive - but they don't even do that. - Mike Bracco

"The service takes Craigslist rental listings and puts them on a Google map to make them easier to visualize, browse, and filter based on rent, keyword, pet-friendliness, or even distance to mass transit. Padmapper is a pretty straight forward Google Maps mashup. Each pinpoint on the map represents a listing on Craigslist for housing. You can click on the pin to open a balloon that shows you everything you need to know about the listing. The title is a link to the actual post on Craigslist, and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms is listed in the balloon. Additionally, you can see the address, how fresh the listing is, and browse photos of the unit if they're available. The listing balloon also has the poster's Craigslist-generated e-mail address and their phone number if you want to give them a call." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

Posterous adds autoposting to Picasa, Vimeo, Delicious, Friendfeed, YouTube and more.
Don't get me wrong - I love all of this compatibility and how everything works together. However, I am starting to go a little crazy with all of the options one has to share information and distribute it throughout various networks. Do I post to FF then share to Twitter? Do I post on Posterous than share to other networks? But then if I do that how will it effect the comments on the... more... - Mike Bracco
I'm curious as to what Posterous can do that FriendFeed can't. It just looks like another Tumblr to me *shrugs* - LANjackal
LANjackal: They seek to be the defacto standard of how people share rich media on the web - check out this interview with founders - http://ff.im/4nQqS - it's pretty good. @Mike: Thanks for the explanation. Doesn't sound reason enough for me to use it, but if you want to go ahead :) - LANjackal from IM
LANjackal: I hear ya :) I don't really use it either. I have an account setup just to play with it but not sure I see it fitting into my workflow/life in anyway. But who knows....I do love the simplicity and strategy of making posting really simple. I think it will be great for the less techno savvy who understand email and all they have to do to make a blog post or photo gallery is send an email to post@posterous.com - Mike Bracco
Just tried it out, and auto-posting to FriendFeed looks the same as if you import the RSS feed. Personally I would rather FF pull items in, instead of a service pushing to FF. - Daniel Sims
Why is this better than using Ping.fm and Traffic Geyser/Tubemogul? hmmmm - dhamza
@dhamza, I doubt anyone would just use Posterous only as a middle-man for posting content to others sites (like you would use ping.fm or pixelpipe). It is a nice feature for auto-sharing your posterous blog posts, without having to use another in-between service. - Daniel Sims
I seriously don't get the point of tumblr, posterous, *duplicating* data. Just link to the original sites! And I doubly don't get the point of nested tumblr/posterous/etc shares. - Andrew C (✓)
One thing Posterous can do that FF can't (at the moment) is accept iPhone3G(s) videos via email. - tollie williams
Daniel Sims, push is faster and more efficient than pull. - Vezquex
@Tollie - exactly. They've told me they're working on pushing video to flickr (right now it only pushes photos to flickr)... but I've used it for pushing video to Facebook from the iPhone and it works great. - Jen (SquirrelGirl)
Posterous is awesome. I have an account but my Blackberry 8330 has no cam :( but once I get the new iPhone expect greatness :) - Garin Kilpatrick
Eventually, with every social media site pushing updates to every other, somebody is going to break the loop detection and we'll get an infinite number of duplicate posts about somebody's kitteh, causing the interwebz to collapse into a singularity and destroy civilization. Damn cat! - DGentry
DGentry, agreed. It's going to take some planning now to make sure posts do not get posted in loops. - LPH™ and his dog P™
It does seem to be a bit easier to love posterous if you're looking to share iPhone 3GS video with it. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
It's really the posting audio and video from the iPhone (and other mobiles) that I think is interesting. FF should add that feature quickly if they want to become the social MMS to the Twitter social SMS. Having private groups for these personal mobile captured images, audio, and videos is an important feature both FF and Posterous share. Posting to a public YouTube to get your video into FF is far from ideal. - Chip Ramsey
iPhone video can be shared very easily to FriendFeed via email share@friendfeed.com or upload video to YouTube and be sure you've added your YouTube service to FF and wala you're all set. Posterous does have more sophisticated posting options *hint, hint FF team* - Susan Beebe from BuddyFeed
I was under the impression that you could not send videos from the iPhone 3GS to FF and have them display inline. I guess I will have to test the functionality when my 3GS arrives. I understand the YouTube route, but want to keep my family videos, etc. in a private group. I don't think most people want to be spammed by videos of my son doing the robot as he slides down his new slide or my daughter singing like a bizarro Mariah Carey. I could make a private Posterous, but would prefer to keep it in FF. - Chip Ramsey
Personally I'd like to see both of them. :-P Molly - Molly from email
I like Posterous I really do but I've yet to find the problem it solves. My primary output comes via my blog, misc content via Tumblr, and Friendfeed for most everything else. Posterous doesn't really offer much that I need right now. If I didn't have a blog or tumlbr it would be a good fit I guess. - Keith - @tsudo

TECH RANT: I wanted to write an iPhone app to interface with my car - control various functions and provide analytics. However, my car's OS doesn't have and API. How absurd is it that in 2009 car manufactures would create closed off gardens and not allow people to build apps for their cars. :)
iphonecar.png
Seriously though - does anyone know what the state of the Car OS is. I know Microsoft was big on this a few years back. - Mike Bracco
http://openecu.org/index... is a place to start. I know that you can, using linux interface with your car using the diagnostics port. If your car was running windows it would pull over to the side of the road every time you accelerated and you would need to get out and hold the door handle, key and antenna to get it to restart. - mindless_cubicle_drone
Clark: Ok, fair enough :) But the Car's OS should at least have built in 3G to be able to transmit data to the dealership so they can tell me when to come in or when there is a problem. - Mike Bracco
I know alot of the embeded engineers who provide the systems to calibrate the ECU for like toyota and honda... I told them they need to make a little bluetooth plugin so you can do just that about 6 months ago. these guys are super embedded otaku they could do it, just need to talk them into it. Ie beer, manga, maid cafe, cabarets things like that and its a done deal - Robert Higgins
Mike: GM's OnStar service does that, albeit via satellite connections and not via 3G. There are a LOT of reasons why cars don't have APIs, I'll go through a few: 1)Unlike PCs, auto computing isn't centralized and can be VERY heterogeneous 2)Accident/Warranty liability and risk of serious damage 3)To lock drivers into the OEM's dealer/supply network 4)No consumer demand thereof - LANjackal
The arguments against lack rigour. Cars are easily modified as is. Every 17 year old here is "chipping" their Subaru. - Matt G
LANjackal: But don't you think down the road 10 years maybe....that some sort of standardization will be developed - whether in the form of an OS or otherwise. In my opinion, every device that has a computer today will have some sort of OS or standardization built in to allow 3rd parties to create cool stuff or it. For example, my coffee machine has a computer in it but I can't control or interface with it....at least right now. I think that will all change. - Mike Bracco
At the core of things in the supplier chain, things are probably already standardized in terms of embedded OSes. Things may be heading your way already with Ford's Sync feature - supplied by MS - and bluetooth/iPod integration. As a mechanical engineer, I can tell you that one of the differences between the mechanical world and the tech one is that in the mechanical world the emphasis... more... - LANjackal from IM

Microsoft CarOS could give 'blue screen of death' a whole new meaning. - Tinfoil 2.0 from iPhone
You might want to look into Ford's Sync feature, which is developed by MS, before mouthing off. It's done very well, increased Ford's sales, and hasn't resulted in crashes or failures - LANjackal from IM
You think car manufacturers are ready for the 21st century, let alone ready to play with the 3rd party ecosystem that has grown from good, interoperable desktop software the web? That's way, way too much to be asking of such a lumbering, aimless industry. - David Chartier
"lumbering, aimless industry" Don't let your opinion of the Big 3 color your opinion of the auto world in general. Current generation vehicle tech is maddeningly complex as is. There's a huge difference between debugging code and debugging a mechanical system that most people do not appreciate - LANjackal from IM
the auto industry is so slow to change, for example the Horn. Why hasn't the horn sound changed in 100 years? For example a Hey whats up horn sound. Or a "Pardon me, can I squeeze in here horn sound? Or how about a "Wake Up" sound. Why can't we have ring tones for cars? - Robert Higgins

I was thinking about settings up a private group on FF for the people I work with. I think it would be better than sending tons of emails back and forth, and a great place to collaborate. Has anyone done this? How is it going?
It would be excellent if you could get people to join and then actually use it. - Jannifer @wordsforliving
We are doing this, it works... But you need to reach a "critical mass". The contributors/readers ratio is approx. 1/10. - PiccoloImprenditore
There are only 3 of us (including myself) so it shouldn't be too hard to get them to join. I just wanted to see if anyone else has been doing this. - Shawn Hickman
piccolo, how many people are currently in your group? - Shawn Hickman
Check out Socialcast - TechCrunch talked about them yesterday - the "FriendFeed for business" http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... - Mike Bracco
Mike, I was actually just looking at them. Seems pretty cool. I was trying to make FF my central hub for as many things as possible, so I will see how that goes. - Shawn Hickman
Shawn - gotcha :) Yeah FF is becoming my central hub these days too. It's nice to have a service that can integrate with everything else like FF does. It definitely beats having to go to a bunch of different places on the web. - Mike Bracco
I just need FF to integrate into a client like Seesmic Desktop or Tweetdeck so I can have the trifecta of FB/Twitter/FF in one place. - Mike Bracco
That's what I am waiting for too. I would love to have nothing but FF open in my browser all day. I wonder how Google Wave will affect this. - Shawn Hickman
Shawn, we are 10 + many freelance consultants, depending on the project. What I'm really missing now is a way to "open" single threads to externals (customers). Looks like Google Wave might be more effective for this - that would be a problem because I love FF. - PiccoloImprenditore
Use "YAMMER" http://www.yammer.com/ or Socialcast. - Alp
piccolo, thanks for the info. It is going to be interesting to see how FF reacts to Google Wave. - Shawn Hickman
Alp, thanks. I am looking into both. Do you use any of them? - Shawn Hickman
Yammer is great. We use it for a team of 6 and it's perfect. I even have it set up to come to my SMS so I am reachable when I'm out of the office. - Ward Seward
We use Yammer as well, and it works reasonably well for us (w/o the 140 char limit). Yet to figure to SMS it, as most of our use is asynch and not time critical. - K Srikrishna
Mike B: twhirl supports twitter and friendfeed, still lacks facebook though - Mike Chelen
We have been playing with this in the group that I work with and it does have some use. We have found that some things like task assignments seem to still work best in email. We do find it useful to have short conversations about new sites that we have found and about designs that we are working on. There have been instances deep within a 'discussion' where we really wish we had some threading features. - Aaron Choate from Nambu
I do believe FF could become a very efficient collaboration platform for business, but there are only few known success stories. If it worked for you, please tell us how and why http://friendfeed.com/friendf.... - Jérôme

Google Dips Its Toe Into Travel Space With City Tours - http://www.techcrunch.com/2009...
Google has just debuted the latest entry to its fleet of Labs products, introducing the search giant to the travel space. Dubbed City Tours, the new site can build itineraries for brief trips to locations around the globe in a matter of seconds. At this point details on the new product are fairly sparse — it looks like Google hasn’t written its customary blog post yet, but given how basic the product is it’s pretty easy to figure out how it works. - Wang Yip from Bookmarklet
Getting started is incredibly easy — just type in where you’re visiting (say, San Francisco or London), and Google will present a suggested itinerary spanning a three day trip, with around a dozen attractions per day depending on the city. From there you can change the number of days you’ll be staying (Google will show more attractions the longer you stay), and you can also manually... more... - Wang Yip
I just checked out Banff - looks kind of neat (one day tour) but then I checked out a bigger city like Calgary (three days) and it ran out of places to go to on the third day. - Wang Yip
I cant wait until they start to integrate date specific events like festivals or what not (maybe aggregated from the city's events page or something?). I can see a mashup between yelp and city tour forming some time in the future once this rolls out in full. - Wang Yip

Is there a To-Do iPhone app that will Sync with Google Calender??
Not afaik with the Google To Do list. But you can sync with either RememberTheMilk or ToodleDo, both of which can display a to-do list within Google Calendar. Details on how to do that for RTM is at http://www.rememberthemilk.com/service... - Ian Betteridge
I'm already using that. But I'm looking specifically for a To-Do list (or one that will sync with Google Tasks) - Roberto Bonini
I saw one pop up the other day: "iTask(Google Calendar Sync)." I haven't tried it because it's US $4.99 - metalerik

Tasks didn't add the item to my calendar, and I'm using my iphone - Toby Graham
Ok will see if it will sync Google Tasks to my iPhone Calender. I assumed that it wouldn't since everything has to go over ActiveSync. - Roberto Bonini
Nope. Does not appear to work. We need a seperate app. - Roberto Bonini
see Tobias' comment above - that is the only solution I am aware of ... no app yet. Google mobile app is great, check it out - Susan Beebe from BuddyFeed
Remember the Milk is the best to do IMO. Decent native iPhone app, and there is a script to somewhat integrate with gmail. Check out Lifehacker for some good articles on RTM. - David Imielski

"Google’s Android mobile operating system finally showed its hand as a serious competitor to the iPhone today." - Martin Bryant from Bookmarklet
I welcome all new developments in the field of mobile computing, and this certainly looks better than previous iterations of the Android OS. Interestingly enough, the Orange UK video doesn't tout Flash capability, nor, indeed, much of Android either. Perhaps we should withhold the judgement until the first user reports complaining of bulk –this thing looks thick– and battery-eating Flash appear? - ianf ⌘

I would much rather see a phone support HTML5 more than flash, since HTML5 will replace flash soon. - Wizetux
HTML5 has yet to be finalized, whereas phone manufacturers have to get their wares out now, not when W3 deems it stable and mature enough for them to invest in a brand new parser/renderer (latest editor draft http://w3.org/html/wg/html5/ says out right: "Different parts of this specification are at different levels of maturity.") Hence the Flash, fat good it'll do them. - ianf ⌘

Why Numbers Are Important For Personal Branding - http://personalbrandingblog.com/why-num...
One point well made is that many proponents of lowering the numbers are not in danger of being at the bottom of the heap. They already have the BIG numbers and aren't seeking them so much as existing with them. In their discouraging of others they are essentially ensuring they stay at the top. - Sheryl
So much here relies on your ultimate purpose. If you are building a brand, then I absolutely agree with the major points of this article. If, however, you are simply wanting to participate in conversation and make some online friends, numbers mean much less and can be a distraction. The question you must ask before you "strategize" is "Why are you here?" - Dave Pancost
