"I'm not sure it's a matter of discouragement - the sheer fact I've linked to something is an act of encouragement to visit it. It's a matter of transparency. I'm warning the reader that they will be expected to pay for the content through the link. I think that's a better experience than someone clicking through, finding an unexpected paywall and getting frustrated. Different arguments apply within The Times's own content than my blog, though. Once people are on a Times product, be it free-to-air or paywalled, they should have a reasonable expectation that any links might well take them behind the paywall."
