3 more logo concepts (2nd concept of the "open eye" has an additional variation, taking the total to 4). Each concept comes on a light bg immediately followed on dark bg. Each concept this time has a symbol version of the logo for use as favicons, avatars, on t-shirts etc...

I like #1 and #2, because it also reminds me of a "round table", which is a bit of a metaphor for conversation (and equality). I think that's a huge part of FriendFeed as well. I mean, we can get a feel for each other through our feeds, but we get to know each other through conversation. Often in small groups. Joining a conversation is as sitting down at a table, I'd say.

I might be an exception, but for me the real-time commenting is more important than the actual "lifestreaming". I could live with much sparser feeds. It's the comments which I enjoy the most. Of course, FF is also about anyone being able to start a conversation, and that's done through the stream. So the two concepts (stream and conversation) complement each other.

All logo's in the middle remind me too much of a shooting target. Like someone shot at the bulls-eye once, but missed. #1 and #2 and the last two ones are the best. The last ones are really "light" though. It looks a bit weird to me.

I think it looks like "pen" as the "o" symbol is not as bold as the rest of the characters? Can we see the top two with a more bold "o"? The second one down is my favourite out of the lot just would like to see if the amendment helps. :-)

You'll want to beef up the line weight a little when the time comes for a favicon, but I'm finding that by the time I modify a logotype for a favicon you really don't want to see the favicon symbol at full size. (Fortunately, nobody ever has to.)

In the first symbol, I also see "accomodation" (the circle "accomdotates" to the new circle coming in). It looks a bit like a cell-membrane or something. I said it earlier on, it's very evocative. Long-time ago I've seen something as "deep" in a logo. Especially considering the unbelievably simple form. It's just two circles. Together, they say lots.

Vijay, for protecting your own interest, I would try to look into publishing this work as solidly as you can, to give you the most chances to claim "prior art"... I'm not a lawyer btw... I think it would be shame if someone else would take this from you (or us).

If you don't have pockets, maybe donating this logo to a trustworthy organization who does have pockets might work well instead. I don't know which org would be suitable for that. They'd have to be willing to fight other people in court over it.

The worst that could happen is that there's some uproar over the ownership of it, and a new project has to be started, or the existing project has to be renamed (as happened to Wireshark, and to a lesser extent, Joomla/Mambo).

I would not rule-out the possibility that this logo is in fact not unique, and has been trademarked already. Is there a kind of image search which could search on this exact shape? I don't think I haven't seen it before, but that says nothing.

My overall vision: Let people freely brainstorm for now. :) I don't like the idea of a general project lead though. There obviously need to be a lead developer for each main codebase (I expect we're gonna end up with more than one), but any umbrella organization should merely facilitate, not manage. Besides, we do not need much "facilitation". Almost all the tools developers/designers need are available for free on the web.

I'm definitely interested in starting one of the big projects, but that doesn't make me "the" project lead. At the most, "a" project lead, a lead of one concrete project. A particular application, that together with other applications realizes the goal of a "distributed" friendfeed.

Meryn. Granted, and I too agree with your earlier comments on community leaders. However, with this many contributors and a project evolving at such a pace an organiser / communicator will be of huge advantage to avoid ending up with 10's of individual projects instead of one masterpiece.

I do think it's great that with the name of "openff", we kind of recognize our common interest/purpose/destiny (how does one say that? ;)). But I don't care much about who's gonna manage the main openff site for example. That is, I assume there won't be a centralized friendfeed, but a distributed/federated one. I expect openff.org to become somewhat like mozilla.org, or apache.org.

Well I don't see a need to talk politics at this point. Your talking in terms that don't matter much. I'd rather have technical discussion. I'm still not sure what you're planning to concretely. You've said something about "the buck stops here". It sounds "alien" to me. So maybe this is my "immune reaction"... I don't feel anger towards you though. I just hope you get concrete and say what you're gonna take on. Are you gonna start coding? If so, on what?

Watching the beginning of a Open Source Project is always interesting as I've either been involved or seen many of them. Everyone scrambles to put their view very quickly while it's in the embryonic stage, many people disappear once true development begins. I've seen many project turn into nothing wheat they were intended to be which sometimes is cool. The Chandlerproject.org is a good example of that.

Robert, couldn't you take a second and check your identi.ca account. You should know it is possible to push mesages from every Laconica installation to Twitter & FriendFeed (etc.). Distributed microblogging needs a pushy evangelist. Jumping from one proprietary & closed solution to the next is not the best advice.

Twitter needs to put favorites to some use. It should function and reward it's use as "likes" do here on FriendFeed. I have been doing the same thing you are with Twitter favorites Robert. It should be a feature of Twitter instead of a FriendFeed workaround. Real-time, threaded comments of some form (to better track conversations) and a like system are what Twitter needs.

Robert: from what I can tell most FF users do not share your enthusiasm or optimism. Wait I owe Scoble an apology. I read several places that he had a financial interest in Friend Feed. That information , if true,clouded my perception of his commentary of FF. If you believed that true, he comes across as a shill trying to protect his investment IMHO. In his blog post he denounces any financial connection. Hmmm - I keep my FB social, private, and mainly family. I keep FF public and work-oriented only. Will I need two accounts? Or just delicate messing about with privacy controls? I'm not looking forward to shifting - may FF last a long while still. FB is too busy, and FF is lightweight and gives me exactly what I want, with a much cleaner interface. Robert, how can you say you don't get how FF users are sad and up in arms? FB's attitudes and culture are different enough for this to be a serious shock. In short, lots of people think FF=good, FB=bad, for better or worse. Your own list of cons is enough to get FF users up in arms.

Here's why people are up in arms: I think it's in the company's best interests to keep the properties existing separately ... especially since like you said, it's a geekier community on FF. Why not integrate the cool *features* FF has within Facebook but keep friendfeed.com as-is?

I agree this is more of a play against Google. I think eventually Twitter and Facebook will team up more to provide real time streams of user updates between the two systems. I wonder if the first step is using FF for the collection of these streams and the next step is acquiring the method of pushing these streams or content.

Nice! So you clever dev types could soon have me scanning barcodes with my iphone to add items to my shopping list. Around the house, while I am out an about or when I see an advert, I will be a scan and a click from doing my weekly shop. Plus the dev gets a commision on my purchases! Sounds like a great opportunity and hugely exciting :)
