"I find this concept cute and odd - that would mean oddly cute. The Boo is a battery charging boomerang. It holds 3 AAA batteries and just by playing with it, the device converts rotary motion into energy. The surface is covered in silicon to protect the precious innards from impact. In the center is a dynamically changing icon that indicates charge levels. Simple idea right? Would you buy one?" - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
Xena could power a city with one of these :-) - Todd Hoff
I'd rather put the batteries into a normal plug-in charger and have someone pedal a bike for its electricity. - xero
This would be a really cool idea if it could withstand a dog chewing on it! Play / exercise your dog and whilst charging, not too sure what I need 3 AAA charging for though? - Ade Lack

3 more logo concepts (2nd concept of the "open eye" has an additional variation, taking the total to 4). Each concept comes on a light bg immediately followed on dark bg. Each concept this time has a symbol version of the logo for use as favicons, avatars, on t-shirts etc...
openfflogoconcept4lightbg.jpg
Show all
I forgot to number the concepts but I guess that wouldn't be too much of a problem. - vijay
A "broken" O, that's brilliant. :) - Meryn Stol
I like #1 and #2, because it also reminds me of a "round table", which is a bit of a metaphor for conversation (and equality). I think that's a huge part of FriendFeed as well. I mean, we can get a feel for each other through our feeds, but we get to know each other through conversation. Often in small groups. Joining a conversation is as sitting down at a table, I'd say. - Meryn Stol
Meryn, that's(person at the table) part of the concept! and I'm glad someone else sees it that way too without me explicitly saying it! :D - vijay
I might be an exception, but for me the real-time commenting is more important than the actual "lifestreaming". I could live with much sparser feeds. It's the comments which I enjoy the most. Of course, FF is also about anyone being able to start a conversation, and that's done through the stream. So the two concepts (stream and conversation) complement each other. - Meryn Stol
Vijay, I'm good with metaphor, but bad with gfx design. It's also matter of being able to *recognize* it or actually think it up. Recognizing something is often more easy. - Meryn Stol
I think this "O" can somehow symbolize "participation", "deliberation" as well. Just like it. Very evocative. (Anyone remember's O'Reilly's concept of "The Architecture of Participation"?) - Meryn Stol
Ok, I'm sold. Vijay, how much? ;) - Meryn Stol
if enough people choose it, then you can have it Meryn... for free :D - vijay
#2 and #6 for me.. nice logos.. defines openff. - Gtp19
#8, #2, then #1 - chaz2b
Awesome work Vijay! #1 and #2 are superb! - Ade Lack
#5 then #2 - Semih Masat™
thanks Ade. : ) It's worth the effort when folks like it :D - vijay
All logo's in the middle remind me too much of a shooting target. Like someone shot at the bulls-eye once, but missed. #1 and #2 and the last two ones are the best. The last ones are really "light" though. It looks a bit weird to me. - Meryn Stol
I'm torn between #1 and #2. - Tyson Key
Awesome - Josh Haley
I think it looks like "pen" as the "o" symbol is not as bold as the rest of the characters? Can we see the top two with a more bold "o"? The second one down is my favourite out of the lot just would like to see if the amendment helps. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
#2 then #6 (or #1 and #5). I can't decide if I like the dark or light background better. Awesome stuff! - caj
Heh, I thought that the symbol in the centre of 5 was a cherry-bomb initially... - Tyson Key
guys, you're right about the font being too bold and the words not gelling together. Doing the tweaky tweaky now... - vijay
Tyson, we can lob the cherry bomb onto FB's logo. - vijay
Curtis, light and dark are not separate concepts; they are color variations of the same concept to show you how each concept will look on contrasting bg. - vijay
They are better than current FF logo. :) - Ersan Özer
That's the spirit, vijay. ;) - Tyson Key
I'm liking #2 and #4. - John (bird whisperer)
Last one is good - Alihan ÇETİN
I like #2 the most - Chris Martin
#s I & 2. I really appreciate the concept behind the open-o and am 100% behind its deployment. :-) - Absentee
#1. Hit me visually as the best of the lot, and I really like the person-at-table thinking you guys have brought out in the threads. I like the clean blue on white better than #2 generally, and as a carryover from the original ff. - Mary B, VALUE author
You'll want to beef up the line weight a little when the time comes for a favicon, but I'm finding that by the time I modify a logotype for a favicon you really don't want to see the favicon symbol at full size. (Fortunately, nobody ever has to.) - Mary B, VALUE author
Also I just caught your comment about how the light and dark aren't separate concepts - they're alternative bgs - d'oh! I should have realized that. - Mary B, VALUE author
haha Mary. happens all the time :D thanks for the favicon tip. Appreciate it : ) - vijay
2, would be great if the logo was a watermark behind the typography. BTW, great work Vij! You are doin better than rest of us. :) - Abhishek from fftogo
Abi, I'm keeping it simple that's all. These aren't finalized anyway. :D - vijay
The first two logos shown are among the best that I've seen so far. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)
thanks Rishabh. : ) Both are the same concept shown on contrasting bg. I have a slightly tweaked version of that concept which I'll post here soon. - vijay
In the first symbol, I also see "accomodation" (the circle "accomdotates" to the new circle coming in). It looks a bit like a cell-membrane or something. I said it earlier on, it's very evocative. Long-time ago I've seen something as "deep" in a logo. Especially considering the unbelievably simple form. It's just two circles. Together, they say lots. - Meryn Stol
If you want, you can also see the small circle as a speaker, while the large circle is the audience. Like an auditorium. - Meryn Stol
yup, 'simple' has that nature Meryn... leaves lots of room for interpretation. - vijay
Vijay: Do you know that guy that pushes "dots" to be used in presentation slides? He has a whole philosophy around it. Indeed, that in the simplest forms you can see the most. - Meryn Stol
But a circle is a much cooler base element than a dot - at least for our purpose, I think. - Meryn Stol
Vijay, for protecting your own interest, I would try to look into publishing this work as solidly as you can, to give you the most chances to claim "prior art"... I'm not a lawyer btw... I think it would be shame if someone else would take this from you (or us). - Meryn Stol
Post it to flickr with a big copyright notice slapped on top of it or something... Or, if you have pockets, file for a trademark. Really, at this point, I think it'd be worth it. - Meryn Stol
Would CC-SA, CC-NC or CC-SA-NC work in the meantime? It's Vijay's set of designs though, so it's his choice. - Tyson Key
If you don't have pockets, maybe donating this logo to a trustworthy organization who does have pockets might work well instead. I don't know which org would be suitable for that. They'd have to be willing to fight other people in court over it. - Meryn Stol
you're right Meryn. I will get that done. Thanks for pointing that out : ) - vijay
The worst that could happen is that there's some uproar over the ownership of it, and a new project has to be started, or the existing project has to be renamed (as happened to Wireshark, and to a lesser extent, Joomla/Mambo). - Tyson Key
Yup, and I think that Vijay wants to see his logo be put to good use. E.g. used for a cause he supports. - Meryn Stol
+1 Meryn. It'd be a shame for anything to happen to it, or the other concepts, whilst things are still ramping-up. - Tyson Key
I would not rule-out the possibility that this logo is in fact not unique, and has been trademarked already. Is there a kind of image search which could search on this exact shape? I don't think I haven't seen it before, but that says nothing. - Meryn Stol
TinEye? - Tyson Key
Yes that looks like it may work. Thanks, Tyson! - Meryn Stol
No problem, although it has it's limitations. - Tyson Key
no worries about the shape's uniqueness. It's unique. There aren't two copies of it. - vijay
A giant, gold £ symbol should do the trick! ;) - Tyson Key
(You could even get creative, and jazz it up by tilting it slightly, and decorating around it)... ;) - Tyson Key
MOAR GLITTAH? - Tyson Key
lol! you guys are nuts hahahahaha!! :D - vijay
You could have multicoloured cartoon people holding hands around it, too. - Tyson Key
How about multicoloured cartoon people holding hands around it and dancin?? I mean a GIF logo... ;) - Abhishek
#2 - onurc
#1 or #2 - one of those two for sure. Great job, vijay! - Micah
thanks Micah! :D - vijay
broken O logo I like. What I can't figure out is why I like it better with the dark blue background. I think it says something about the openff impact with white background. - amarquart
these are pretty good! I'm liking #1 the most. Well done, vijay! :) - Dee @ Holycool.net
DEE! thanks! :D - vijay
really liking the first two alot. - The Silence

Wow, guys you all been busy keeping this project going forward. Any of the prospective project leads care to share an overall vision for the project? May help with narrowing down decisions, like logo design, features ect...
My overall vision: Let people freely brainstorm for now. :) I don't like the idea of a general project lead though. There obviously need to be a lead developer for each main codebase (I expect we're gonna end up with more than one), but any umbrella organization should merely facilitate, not manage. Besides, we do not need much "facilitation". Almost all the tools developers/designers need are available for free on the web. - Meryn Stol
I'm definitely interested in starting one of the big projects, but that doesn't make me "the" project lead. At the most, "a" project lead, a lead of one concrete project. A particular application, that together with other applications realizes the goal of a "distributed" friendfeed. - Meryn Stol
Meryn. Granted, and I too agree with your earlier comments on community leaders. However, with this many contributors and a project evolving at such a pace an organiser / communicator will be of huge advantage to avoid ending up with 10's of individual projects instead of one masterpiece. - Ade Lack
Ade, I think we all recognize the importance of communication here. We're all *very* talkative. :) - Meryn Stol
Maybe the term "leader" is not great for this position? - Ade Lack
It's good to talk. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
We can talk amongst ourselves quite well... We don't need a central figure really. Not for development, at least. - Meryn Stol
Just FYI, there's an "election" for Project Lead going on right now. http://friendfeed.com/clonefe.... The "nominees" are AJ Batac, Jason Huebel, and Vezquex, although Jason has withdrawn his name, even though he had the most votes (14 of 34 cast). The poll closes tomorrow night. - Ken Sheppardson
Ken, yes, I know. And I don't care for it. :) I really don't see the point in anyone being the "leader" here. - Meryn Stol
Oh, I agree, Meryn. I think it's premature and non-productive. ;-) - Ken Sheppardson
I do think it's great that with the name of "openff", we kind of recognize our common interest/purpose/destiny (how does one say that? ;)). But I don't care much about who's gonna manage the main openff site for example. That is, I assume there won't be a centralized friendfeed, but a distributed/federated one. I expect openff.org to become somewhat like mozilla.org, or apache.org. - Meryn Stol
+1 Meryn :) I vote for you. - Ade Lack
Ah.. I thought you'd said you were throwing your support behind AJ, but it looks like I was mistaken or that comment's gone now. http://friendfeed.com/clonefe... - Ken Sheppardson
Jason, what "administrative tasks"? - Meryn Stol
Well I don't see a need to talk politics at this point. Your talking in terms that don't matter much. I'd rather have technical discussion. I'm still not sure what you're planning to concretely. You've said something about "the buck stops here". It sounds "alien" to me. So maybe this is my "immune reaction"... I don't feel anger towards you though. I just hope you get concrete and say what you're gonna take on. Are you gonna start coding? If so, on what? - Meryn Stol
Could we perhaps separate the conversations about the technology necessary to build a distributed, federated system of FriendFeed-like services from the discussion RE one specific implementation with a logo, single version control system, and "project lead"? - Ken Sheppardson

It's currently just a feed of the posts from the CloneFeed / OpenFF group here: http://friendfeed.com/clonefe... - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
"currently just a feed" ? What would everyone like to have posted to Twitter in the future? Hootsuite allows multiple admins for single and multiple Twitter accounts, amongst a list of other features. don't know if that would help later on in the project. - Ade Lack
It has it's own twitter account... it's officially a tech project. - tehKenny

Jason, my pleasure. If I could code like you guys, I would do :) - Ade Lack
Ade Lack
Cool. Some really interesting ideas being put forward and discussed, some beyond my understanding but I have had a tab open with the group since yesterday. lol. Interesting watching the community forming and a product being developed in real time as much as the tech discussions.
Watching the beginning of a Open Source Project is always interesting as I've either been involved or seen many of them. Everyone scrambles to put their view very quickly while it's in the embryonic stage, many people disappear once true development begins. I've seen many project turn into nothing wheat they were intended to be which sometimes is cool. The Chandlerproject.org is a good example of that. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Hmm... More to a development project than initial enthusiasm and gatting the tech right. - Ade Lack
+1 Ade. Watching the technical details being ironed out, and seeing what happens whilst being blocked thanks to showstopping bugs is also always interesting... - Tyson Key

Robert Scoble
I had no idea about "FaceFeed" when I started cleaning up my Twitter account two weeks ago but I sure am glad I did. Now favoriting tweets.
Robert, couldn't you take a second and check your identi.ca account. You should know it is possible to push mesages from every Laconica installation to Twitter & FriendFeed (etc.). Distributed microblogging needs a pushy evangelist. Jumping from one proprietary & closed solution to the next is not the best advice. - Markus Merz
Robert, you lead me to FriendFeed. Where to next. Back to twitter? - Bill Rodman
I don't quite understand favoriting. How do aggregate the favorites of those you follow? - Bill Rodman
I am favoriting tweets at http://Twitter.com/scoblei... they get brought here via RSS. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Robert, how do the lowly twitters get to see favorite twits of everyone they follow? Easy to see RTs - Bill Rodman
Thanks for the tip Robert, I just set my twitter favourites as an RSS feed on FF - Edd McArdle
Wait and see is what we will do. Twitter favorites are not as visible as I would like but I can get to everyone's by visiting their home page. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
"There is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so" - Shakespeare - Shari Weiss
Twitter needs to put favorites to some use. It should function and reward it's use as "likes" do here on FriendFeed. I have been doing the same thing you are with Twitter favorites Robert. It should be a feature of Twitter instead of a FriendFeed workaround. Real-time, threaded comments of some form (to better track conversations) and a like system are what Twitter needs. - Rolf Schewe
I have been pushing use of favoriting tweets more actively for months! Way more valuable and insightful than retweets, and properly supported by Twitter just not so visible... yet! http://akatwittergator.wordpress.com/2009... - A Post From March 22nd! - Ade Lack

Friendfeed is no longer .. all that's left is the flick of the switch. - John Blanton
It's nice for the FF peeps. They'll see what it's like to deliver new features for a decent size user base. - mrshl
Mike: I wouldn't worry about FriendFeed. I see it as Facebook's R&D department now. We're the test bunnies for what 300 million people will get! :-) - Robert Scoble
Now Friendfeed will be able to go head to head with Google wave! So long as the team are allowed to lead from within Facebook how can this possibly be bad? - Ade Lack
I want a FB test bunny t-shirt ;) - Jeff (Team マクダジ )
Nice comments. Also looking forward to realtime search and 300M+ users ... watch that in realtime! My screen will melt I guess. - Peter van Teeseling
I'm only really sad because it completely breaks my on-line life. I'm excited for the FF team and for FB but that's only one aspect and I don't see how it can be merged. - James Myatt
I think it'll make fan pages even cooler. - Gus
Mark: can you verify that this is a real account somehow? Tell us something about what we did in Davos together that I didn't share. - Robert Scoble
Robert, the user name for Zuck misspells his name, just like he misspelled yours. - Louis Gray
Mark, if that is really you. Please don't let people on FB find users on FF. Some of us are looking for the anti-social web. Private groups and no friend requests from long lost classmates was a big plus over here. - Chip Ramsey
Username is "markzukerberg"? .. - Mads Kristiansen
Robert: from what I can tell most FF users do not share your enthusiasm or optimism. From what I can see FriendFeed team members will be absorbed into Facebook R&D, FriendFeed as a property will whither and most will cash out as soon as they can. Do you have some other information that you can share that supports your optimism? - Brian Sullivan

How does everyone know what's going to happen? I prefer Rob's tone of "what should happen" - fear vs possibility - Ankush Narula from iPhone
Really interesting perspective you provide here. I was thinking this whole time that this would hit Twitter hard, but I see now that Google might be the real target, because of the whole real-time search. Nonetheless, I love all the Google employees that are hoping facebook becomes more "open" in the process. Something tells me facebook doesn't care about being open, but being a... more... - Rahul Krishnakumar
Christopher: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... It clearly seems that facebook will use friendfeed to be a playground for future features. - Rahul Krishnakumar
Wait I owe Scoble an apology. I read several places that he had a financial interest in Friend Feed. That information , if true, clouded my perception of his commentary of FF. If you believed that true, he comes across as a shill trying to protect his investment IMHO. In his blog post he denounces any financial connection. Now I feel stupid because good practices dictate that he would have disclosed such in his writings. I suck sorry Robert. - cheapsuits from iPhone
Hmmm - I keep my FB social, private, and mainly family. I keep FF public and work-oriented only. Will I need two accounts? Or just delicate messing about with privacy controls? I'm not looking forward to shifting - may FF last a long while still. FB is too busy, and FF is lightweight and gives me exactly what I want, with a much cleaner interface. Thanks very much Robert, your blog post is much appreciated! - Allyson Lister
Robert, how can you say you don't get how FF users are sad and up in arms? FB's attitudes and culture are different enough for this to be a serious shock. In short, lots of people think FF=good, FB=bad, for better or worse. Your own list of cons is enough to get FF users up in arms. - Don Faulkner
Christopher I see it now. Easy to see what he said when it isn't filtered by FF haters. What more can I say then I suck? I surely am not going to kill myself over it. - cheapsuits from iPhone
Thrilled for Paul, but amused that FB's first big land grab is another biz that isn't monetized properly either! Arrogance or Ignorance? - Jan Simmonds
Jan, FF has some great technology and some great people. It's not about the service itself. - James Myatt
Here's why people are up in arms: I think it's in the company's best interests to keep the properties existing separately ... especially since like you said, it's a geekier community on FF. Why not integrate the cool *features* FF has within Facebook but keep friendfeed.com as-is? - Tamar Weinberg
I agree this is more of a play against Google. I think eventually Twitter and Facebook will team up more to provide real time streams of user updates between the two systems. I wonder if the first step is using FF for the collection of these streams and the next step is acquiring the method of pushing these streams or content. - CodeSamurai
FF = Facebook Labs - Andrew
I like the separate sites and maybe they will allow both options, Facebook is too busy for me and Friend Feed cuts to the chase and I hope we don't see "FaceFeed" with everything combined without options. - MedicalQuack
They got some talented people at FriendFeed. - Kenneth Yeh
