Twitter seems to mysteriously insert spaces sometimes. Nobody knows why, and there doesn't seem to be a pattern either. - Voyagerfan5761
via fftogo
It's not Twitter, but Firefox. If you see returns from the API, they're all fine. Fx is having some layout issues which Twitter is trying to look into and consistently reproduce. No luck yet because of the lack of a pattern as pointed out by Voyager. - Aditya Mukherjee
It also removes ellipsis from the end of your tweets. SO MUCH FOR DRAMATIC PAUSES!!!! dot dot dot - CannonGod
Decorative? Pencils these days don't come with them any more. Of course, nobody uses wooden pencils these days either, do they? Mechanical pencils have it so that it's comfortable to click. - Aditya Mukherjee
Of course they do come, eraser end pencils are *still* in production. I use a pencil...mechanical ones are too fragile for me, besides you can't chew on them. - सिंधु सुंदर
some followers are friends. Other followers have unlimited potential - Jeff Marmins
In Hollywood they call it "functional friends". - Nir Ben Yona
Om is right. But, man, this stuff is being way over-analyzed. - Ed Moltzen
This is not restricted to just Twitter is it? Are there any 'friends' on the web? (assuming you don't know them in person) - Aditya Mukherjee
Don't see anything wrong with it. One doesn't care about a lot of people usually, only some. And other play more kind of a functional role. - Oleg Ivanov
Yes they are ... I met many good friends through twitter and had real face to face meetings and events with them ... - johnpiercy
“Filttr is the brand new way to use Twitter. There are people who complain about Twitter being noisy. We think we can help you. Filttr has advanced algorithms and prioritizing of users to decide which tweets you see. Currently in closed beta, there are 100 invites for you to signup! http://is.gd/bzzG”
Looks neat, but didn't appear to do much. - Voyagerfan5761
Did you guys play around with the settings? We filter based on auto-generated keywords and the priorities you assign to the people you follow. - Aditya Mukherjee
@Voyagerfan5761: I just checked up. You assigned priorities to just a few people. Were they active at that time? In any case, if you didn't get what you were expecting, help us improve it? Give us feedback at http://filttr.uservoice.com/, and we'll see how we can improve it for you :) - Aditya Mukherjee
Sounds like NoiseRiver, I can't work out how it decides which tweet should be filtered or not. - Andrew Trinh
@Andrew: It's a combination of priorities and what our algorithm understands of your interests. It's more than a simple 'ranking'. We'll be introducing more options to filter according to in the future – as the beta progresses. - Aditya Mukherjee
But I didn't have any of the settings modified from default and it just decided to filter some tweets out. - Andrew Trinh
@Andrew: We run a check to get some basic understanding of your interests when you sign up. If you don't change the settings, it'll not count the priorities and just show you the relevant tweets based on the initial factors. The priorities are an added 'fine tune' if you want to think of it that way :) - Aditya Mukherjee
We'll be allowing further customization soon. Moreover, if you tweet through (app/web) through us, that'll help us generate better keywords. - Swaroop Hegde
Looks like an interesting app! Kudos! - rampantheart
Very interesting app, but it's a pain to set up the priorities. I guess if I assigned high priorities to a few, rest would automatically get demoted, right? - Mia
How does one get the twitter updates when using filttr? - fredbvalani
@Mia: One person's priorities doesn't affect someone else's. It matters on the stream of tweets coming in. If you get a lot of tweets from someone who's priority is low, a lot of their tweets will get filtered out, and so on. We provided a search box so that you can pick and choose whose priority you want to set. - Aditya Mukherjee
@Frederick: I've explained the concept at the top. And you get tweets like you normally would from Twitter – just that they're either hidden or shown, based on how what our algorithm judged. You can always click to show the tweet if you want to see what someone said regardless. You can use our web interface or our desktop app. They both use your Twitter 100 API calls/hour limit. - Aditya Mukherjee
@Mia, @Frederick – ofcourse, we'd love to hear from you about your experience and any suggestions you might have :) – http://filttr.uservoice.com/ Happy filttr'ing! - Aditya Mukherjee
We just released ßeta2 with a bunch of new features, and a few changes to the existing ones. We'll be sending invites to users who signed up with us during the beta 1, so that they can invite one more person if they want to. More details (and a screencast) over at our blog – http://blog.filttr.com/ - Aditya Mukherjee
I just subscribed to AM and registered for the beta. - Russellreno
I searched for Filttr on Twitter and found an auto sign up page. I like this filtering. - Russellreno
@Russellreno: We do have a few stray invites floating around :) They're for anybody who can find them. Do let us know how it goes for you, and anything you want to see in future releases! http://feedback.filttr.com/ - Aditya Mukherjee
@Frederick Bvalani - It's a Brita for your Twitter, or something equally catchy like that. ;) - Tyson Key
looks like I missed the window to beta - Jeff Marmins
@Jeff: No worries :) Our release cycles are fairly quick, and we offer more invites every time (last time, we sent a +1 type invite to all existing members, to let them pass it on to their friends). Keep an eye out :) Plus, we'll announce it here as well. - Aditya Mukherjee
OK so what's the secret code? Anyone have a +1 invite to spare? - Internet Strategist
Javascript will slow down my beautiful little page. I am sticking to a design rule: "Don't add anything you don't need". - Vijayendra Mohanty
@Vijay: You talk of Javascript like the plague. Without Javascript, there would be no Web 2.0, you do realise that, right? - Aditya Mukherjee
Heh! I know. But web2 shouldn't be slow and sluggish also right? - Vijayendra Mohanty
It's not. Sites like Flickr, DeviantArt, FriendFeed, all use Javascript to make things snappy for you. Facebook (as a site) is on the slower side (barely experiential), but Javascript itself is not. - Aditya Mukherjee
Friendfeed does work neatly, even with all the goodness built into it. My opinion, I guess, is based on my experiences with the slowpokes. - Vijayendra Mohanty
Listening isn't their strong point. But I really hope they do. - Vijayendra Mohanty
Well, just get rid of FB and use FF instead :) - Roshni
It's the people. Not the features that keep me on the book of faces. - Vijayendra Mohanty
via fftogo
"in" the book, not "on" :) And being a Facebook platform developer, I understand how a dev's brain works. (un)fortunately, Facebook created a world where the word 'shame' doesn't exist. Developers *have* to shamelessly promote their app if it has to succeed. Seeing as how it's bread and butter for some people, these apps *have* to succeed. Facebook can stay free because they plan to monetize using this platform (or so they've been saying the past couple of years) – so there will be no 'lite' version. - Aditya Mukherjee
On the other hand, you can scroll down on your home page (not your profile), and use the link to the news feed preferences to block out different stories – photo albums in your case. Then go to your profile, and remove all other apps. Then go to your account and decide exactly how much of your profile people can see. It's a painfully long process, but it can be done. - Aditya Mukherjee
Aditya: My problem is with the sluggish Javascript. Photos are there on Walls also; I don't mind that. - Vijayendra Mohanty
I have my theories about that. Facebook introduced all that fancy Javascript because people were screen scraping profiles to gain data. Scraping is where a script gets the HTML of the page, and picks out data from that. That's wrong, because Facebook data is very precious. That also explains the weird URL schemes. It's all to make things harder for people trying to snoop out your information. I don't find it that sluggish though :) - Aditya Mukherjee
Ah well. It seems the measures they took to make life safer for us isn't making life easier for us. - Vijayendra Mohanty
“Reason #3487 to avoid twitter like badly made pongal: There are millions of morons (don't feel guilty) who mistake it for an IM alternative. NEWS FLASH FUCKERS: it's not. So just answer the question (what are you doing?) ONCE and STFU.”
Twitter is many things to many people. For one, it's way more social than half the social networks out there – and sharing what's going on with us is one of the reasons. Twitter asks us that question to start us off, but we don't need to answer that question. - Aditya Mukherjee
And isn't pongal a holiday/festival thing? How do you 'make' a day? Badly, that too. - Aditya Mukherjee
Pongal = sweet dish, which can be made badly (and often it is done so) - सिंधु सुंदर
Stop assuming and turning twitter into a junkyard that fits your description of what "twitter is". Twitter asks you question and that's it, don't keep sucking on it. - सिंधु सुंदर
You have no right to slander a service you've barely used. And that's all I'm going to say on this. - Aditya Mukherjee
barely? get your facts right aditto, I had used twitter for a considerably long period of time before I quit and aww don't take it to heart, you can still abuse twitter servers with your IM conversation-like tweets, its okay, the service is free anyway. - सिंधु सुंदर
Don't use it if you don't like it. Don't tell people what they should or shouldn't do. - Vijayendra Mohanty
Why are you worked up? I am just expressing my opinion on what I *think* people must do. Take it or leave it. - सिंधु सुंदर
via IM
I'm 'liking' this solely for the serenity in @vimoh's comment, and for putting the finger on what has been ticking me off about this message. I don't usually back away from arguments, and I did so here because it really made me angry. - Aditya Mukherjee
So i turned the table around this time. Yay! and it's making you angry cause that's the bitter truth and YOU don't have a come back for it. - सिंधु सुंदर
Am not worked up. Just saying that you shouldn't blame others for the fact that YOU couldn't handle Twitter. - Vijayendra Mohanty
via fftogo
There you go again, what is it with tweeters and assuming things? It was not that I could handle twitter, it is that twitter won't be able to handle you guys if you abuse twitter for your public IM conversations online and am not blaming, stop using inappropriate synonym. - सिंधु सुंदर
via IM
I agree that Twitter can get really annoying when people go on and on back and forth--especially when you only follow one of the two or more people talking. I use Twitter to follow what they are up to, not to listen in on conversations. The fact is that Twitter is not for full-blown conversations--it's called "Twitter" for a reason. That said, Twitter is just a tool--don't blame it because some people who use it are tools, too :P. - thepete
Alas finally someone with some working brain cells! *hugs* and....you mean to say they are fools? and not "tools" right? ;) - सिंधु सुंदर
However, you *could* just unfollow anyone who is too chatty for you or, perhaps, *scroll by*. But hey, sometimes it's just more fun to bitch about something. :) - thepete
heh, am bitching with a reason. Yes I know about unfollowing and following, but that would mask the problem, the real solution is people stop abusing the damn service. Try turning it into a paid service, lets see if we'd still have the same amount of tweeting. - सिंधु सुंदर
You have a choice there like @thepete said! I have been using Twitter for a long time now and have no qualms whatsoever in stating the fact that at times, I used it as an instant messaging service. Period. - rampantheart
You still don't get it do you? stop abusing your favourite service. - सिंधु सुंदर
[not intended to be an ad hominem attack]you're talking fundamentalist-speak. sounds like me when i started using twitter. I hated the extra chatter. But slowly, it grows on you like the friendly building housewives gossip network or whatever. Ordinary people communicate. Twitter's opt-in network model suits even your ordinary moron. :) - Vimal George

You do realise the pitfalls of bringing all your data into one place? If Google decides to flip the switch on your account tomorrow, you'll be wiped off the face of the Internet. To some, that's worse than actually being wiped out. - Aditya Mukherjee
Comment system on blogger is less than optimal. However, theme is nice. Useful feature idea for friendfeed is to display excerpt of RSS feed along with feed link itself. - Roshan

Umm, your "Post Comment" doesn't work, and your last post on Tumblr is linking to the wrong place. Although, now that you've moved to Blogger, you should get used to things breaking more often :) - Aditya Mukherjee
Yeah blogger is horrendously buggy, I don't even know why I moved but it bothers even more if I don't do something I want to. I fixed the comments link and link on old tumblelog, thanks aditto. - सिंधु सुंदर

“If you are looking for lost conversations then go away, I deleted them. WAI? cause they poked me right in the eye, everytime i looked at this darn page.”
Too much drama on those threads, I hate it when you guys say things and hide under the pretext later that you were *jus* kidding. Don't do that else I have to start playing my sarcasm card and things will get bitter. - सिंधु सुंदर
But I *wasn't* kidding – where did it seem like I was? - Aditya Mukherjee
I thought FF has given you enough tools against doofus' like me? ;) - Aditya Mukherjee
Yes, see that arrow mark that says 1 related entry? That shows the hidden entries and I use that feature but it hurts that you are ruining FF. - सिंधु सुंदर
Not that. If you make a typo and don't see it, it's already gone to others before you realise - Aditya Mukherjee
That's the case also with twitter, what's so special about the same thing on FF? - सिंधु सुंदर
People have a refresh rate on Twitter – which Friendfeed doesn't (with 'real time' for web users, otherwise the bot on Jabber). Twitter isn't that real time, but it'll be soon. Then it'll be as PITA-ish as FF's. - Aditya Mukherjee
What now you guys are ganging up on me? great. just effin great. - सिंधु सुंदर
I don't think he was ganging up with anything - he was just agreeing with me that tech blogs shouldn't write about musicians :) - Aditya Mukherjee
that, and also I still enjoy listening to LP even though it has been quite some time I've been out of high school - Anomit Ghosh
I love their first two albums - Meteora kinda didn't do it for me, and Minutes to Midnight has just three tracks I like. They're great musicians, but my tastes have gotten a lot heavier. They sounds too punk to me now ;) - Aditya Mukherjee
apart from Given Up and What I've Done, the rest of the tracks on MTM are shite. Also HT has been their best output till date. - Anomit Ghosh
"Bleed it out"? That song sounds a little like "Faint", but it sounds fresh :) - Aditya Mukherjee
the clapping thing totally ruined it for me - Anomit Ghosh
Heh, yea, it sounds different – we're going to do it without the clapping, and the piano sounds. Maybe make it a little heavier – It's seriously a lot of fun to scream for 2 minutes straight. - Aditya Mukherjee
@sindhu Ah, I didn't know I was still in high school.. Awesome! - Swaroop Hegde
What so awesome about linkin park I don't get it. They were good when they started out and then become so commercialized and bubble gum rebel garden variety pop, don't you guys see that? how could you still listen to them??? - सिंधु सुंदर
The words you're looking for are 'sell out'. And we've been saying the same thing: they were good in the beginning, but now they're not. Swaroop still likes 'em, so good for him. We all have our tastes, don't we? - Aditya Mukherjee
Yeah so considering you are still listening to their old hits, aren't you tired of them, yet? - सिंधु सुंदर
They have catchy tunes, but a bit angsty, no? - Roshan
I listen to a lot of Hybrid Theory, a few songs from Meteora and just one from Minutes to Midnight. - Swaroop Hegde
@Roshan: What do you mean by angst-y? Because they don't sound like that to me. Angry, yes. Angst-y? No. I'm of course talking about their earlier stuff. These days I don't know *what* they're singing about. - Aditya Mukherjee
Well, that song that goes 'These wounds they will not heal...' and the other one about faces inside and paranoia. I liked that song, it was real catchy, I'd catch myself humming it sometimes, but never learnt the words, more just the tune. But yeah, they're angry. And whether or not you like that is a matter of taste. - Roshan
“As expected I didn't get in Goldman Sachs...It's this disappointment for nothing that I hate so much, seeing peers do much better. Gotta be prepared for a lot more of this I guess.”
Ah! I meant desktop keyboards. They all still do that. Heck, Swaroop's keyboard rattles away when he's in the mood (my iMac is as silent as a butterfly). You'll get to use one when you join us. - Aditya Mukherjee
Am not touching the mac, gimmeh a linux box. - सिंधु सुंदर
The iMac is maaaiiin! ... I meant, you'll get to use the rattly keyboard - Aditya Mukherjee
yep, friendfeed removed the feature. Aditya just added the feed to get it back :P - Swaroop Hegde
Yep! Facebook was saved my wrath ... now I'm taking it out on Friendfeed. Is ko aggregate karna hai na? I'll give it something to aggregate ... - Aditya Mukherjee
And why are you two having a discussion on FF when you're sitting in front of each other? - Aditya Mukherjee
FF indeed envisioned doofuses like Aditya and made the "hide" this item feature muwaha. - सिंधु सुंदर
Aww come on say it, I thought you spoke your mind...always. - सिंधु सुंदर
Nothing to say. These kinda things usually go towards a 'my desktop is better than your desktop' fight, and well, I have MacOS and you have ... that. - Aditya Mukherjee
I've worked on Macs before, I've seen the GUI, seen the apps. I'd anyday prefer Gnome to it. - सिंधु सुंदर
Yeah, a lot of folks have Macs. I have one too. No big deal. It's what you make of it that matters. This is the cleanest, non-geeky looking Ubuntu deskop I've seen. - Arun
“Going back to the corner where I first saw you, Gonna camp in my sleeping bag I'm not gonna move, Got some words on cardboard got your picture in my hand, Saying if you see this girl can you tell her where I am, Some try to hand me money they don't understand, I'm not...broke I'm just a broken...”
