Of the 1.2 billion citizens of India about 5% have Internet. That would be about 60 million people. Of those, 17.6 million are Orkut users. That is just over 29%.
- David Damore
China has a population estimated as 1,325,639,982 by the World Bank in 2008. There are many indications that there will be continuing increases in the sales of cosmetics in China.

I see Twitter being down, for many folks, like a power outage. Everyone stops... rubs their eyes, looks around, and eventually picks up a book. :)
- Louis Gray
Pretty much. I was polling people about something, but I guess I could go... uh...
- Jolie O'Dell
I am mainly curious to see if Google/Feedburner will automatically tweet my new blog post now. That's why I even found out, because I checked.
- Louis Gray
Yes, Atul. (See the Google Reader share on my feed)
- Louis Gray
Louis - my bad. Was lazy not to scroll down to the bottom of the screen :)
- Atul Arora
...and I'm sure FriendFeed, Facebook, and Google Reader are seeing increased traffic just right now.
- Claudio Sennhauser
I got an error from DISQUS when I posted to your blog
- Ankush Narula
Totally. Where else we gonna go? FriendFeed is, in that sense and to some people, like Twitter's less hot but totally more willing friend. Dang.
- Jolie O'Dell
Ankush, I got your comment, successfully.
- Louis Gray
Tech Crunch: "Update III: It is suggested that if you use the same password on your Twitter account with other accounts, now would be a good time to change your password on those other accounts. Because of the scale of this hack, it can only be assumed right now that Twitter has been completely compromised."
- David Damore
Louis, yes, it's practically required now - MaryB voted on it!
- Micah Wittman
Somehow, I just got a new Twitter follower 1 minute ago. :)
- Louis Gray
Well not completely. For my main use of Friendfeed, it's not. I use FF to update Twitter accounts (several) from Yahoo Pipes, and it stopped working almost 24 hours ago.
- Ignacio Rodriguez de R,
They could have come up with a better name. 'Cyber' is so 90s.
- Chrissie M
Guh, I'm annoyed. I know, childish, but I just got home and I want to see what I missed and it's down. D:
- Colette
Sounds kinda like "Giant Enemy Crab" to me. But that's because it's late here. I'll be heading for bed now *yawns* see you guys
- Kamilah Gill
here's the text from the hackers... (THIS SITE HAS BEEN HACKED BY IRANIAN CYBER ARMY ) U.S.A THINK THEY CONTROLLING ANF MANAGING INTERNET BY THEIR ACCESS, BUT THEY DONT. WE CONTROL AND MANAGE INTERNET BY OUR POWER. SO DO NOT TRY TO STIMULATION IRANIAN PEOPLES TO...NOW WHICH COUNTY IN EMBARGO LIST? IRAN? USA? WE PUSH THEM IN EMBARGO LIST ;) TAKE CARE
- Ankush Narula
Sing to the phrase of "Jimmy Crack Corn". "Twitter is down and I don't care, Twitter is down and I don't care. Twitter is down and I don't caaaaarrrrreee... the lists have gone away."
- Louis Gray
I like pie, too. We should hang out.
- Steven Perez
from IM
interestingly, Twitter updates are still showing up, with people complaining that Twitter isn't working =/ I guess there's a lag. or something.
- Kamilah Gill
I can't get to it via the web... but when you search for twitter on Google you can see the firehose is still pumping real-time to Google's servers
- Ankush Narula
When twitter was on a go slow yesterday I missed out on answering a @namecheap Xmas trivia question. Now it looks like I will miss this hours. *shakes fist*
- Chrissie M
I rather like lists, it enables me to see tweets by people who I'm not following in context with others in their location/field.
- Simon Curran
yes... lists are useful... when twitter isn't in the shitter...
- Ankush Narula
I find pie to be a bit hit and miss though.
- Simon Curran
Why you gotta be all logical about it? Besides, I thought when companies give stuff away, customers end up buying more stuff. Bait and switch. Loss leaders and all that
- Laura Norvig
from iPod
I'm mostly looking for free TV shows and movies. There actually aren't that many free shows, although there are some cool old movies.
- Laura Norvig
from iPod
Thanks, Christopher. I do have a gadget on my iGoogle page that brings those in, and I just bookmarked those sites. I was just thinking that when you're already in iTunes, they should make it easy to find free stuff.

Someone needs to build a Twitter proxy service that'll hold tweets until the service is back up online and repost them.
- Tom Morris
There is a major problem with Twitter. Tweets from people you are NOT following are appearing in your stream. These are NOT Twitter ReTweet either.
- David Damore
It wasn't LeWeb's fault. No one is even here in the hall yet. The conference starts in 45 minutes or so.
- Robert Scoble
"Responding to unscheduled downtime 1 second ago We are working to respond to a disruption in service that stated approximately 10 minutes ago."
- David Damore
Nothing like May 2008 when it would be down for hours. Considering all of the new users, they really aren't down as much as when they had a fraction of the users.
- Liz
Going to Tech Crunch to see if they have a post on this yet.
- David Damore
*sigh* Twitter down again. Must tweet here I guess. At least I have some place to gripe about it.
- Canageek
"Responding to whales 33 seconds ago Starting about 10 minutes ago, we began experiencing a very high rate of errors and we are working on the underlying problem." http://status.twitter.com/
- David Damore
Was able to get Twitter to load in web browser. Can you access it there?
- David Damore
Twitter is up, but experiencing more failwhales then usual according to the status blog.
- Canageek
Update (3:40): We’ve corrected the problem and the site is returning to normal.
- Canageek
"Twitter is over capacity. Too many tweets! Please wait a moment and try again." Didn't know people had so much to say about Charlie Weis
- David Damore
It's been down for at least five minutes already. This is the longest I've seen the fail whale in months.
- Robert Scoble
so are you starting to get the shakes? How long can you go without tweeting?
- Ben Reierson
Responding to high error rate 21 seconds ago Starting about 10 minutes ago, we began experiencing a very high rate of errors and we are working on the underlying problem.
- David Damore
would be more productivity if there was no FF ( twitter backup )
- Mihai Secasiu
So what was trending when it went down?
- phil baumann
Dave - sure. Interesting use case. Definitely spam would be something Google would have to work on.
- phil baumann
not sure what was trending but there was quite a lot of activity on #Spill - in Oz our opposition party is having a meltdown and are spilling the leadership in 30 mins time
- Hilary Talbot
Phil: That was really interesting. Surprised that that shooting never gained traction on Twitter. Did it ever trend? Seems like it was all about Mr. Woods the past few days.... and shopping
- David Damore
Hi everyone. Hope you are all surviving without twitter lol. Great to see you all here.
- snysctt
Glad FF is the backup! </sarcasm> ...seriously though, I'd prefer people do one or the other. I don't reply to most of your comments because you're on Twitter and I refuse to get a Twitter account. Lame service.
- Scott Carmichael
I now have almost three times the number of students registered for my class next semester. Flattering, but am nervous about having 3x the work while doing my day job and being a mom.
0.75 (926/1226) - still relatively new here
- mikepk
I only see my stats for the last week (17/14 = 1.21) Please tell me your 670 number is for more than just a week!
- Brian Johns
1.44 (566/391) for brianjohns (after week tally you should see a comma then 'all time' count - I can see it on your page)
- Micah Wittman
OK, sorry. I'm a total dumbass. I stopped reading after the weekly totals...
- Brian Johns
3.74, which seems way off of everybody else's. I wonder what that says. I comment a lot more than I like.
- Cyrus Lendvay
FFers use FF with their own strategy or simply default tendencies. The ratio is an interesting snapshot of behaviour. Thanks for joining in everyone, hope more keep flowing in.
- Micah Wittman
from twhirl
0.66 - I tend to 'like' things without needing to comment further, I guess, and I notice I usually like the things upon which I comment. Well, frequently.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
.39 (2457/6242) I guess I don't comment much. I do 'like' a lot of things, it would seem.
- Bren -- Making Contact
0.62 then again i have over 11,000 comments
- Cee Bee
1.23 (5287/4229) - I am put to shame by Cee Bee's participation, good grief!
- Lindsay is in 20-ten
So far: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81 ... (if you average 1 comment per like, you'd be 1.0 ... if you're 0.xx you might herd content more than discuss ... if you're whole numbers above 1 you may not 'like' much or discuss plenty or both)
- Micah Wittman
InPerpetualMotion(Gina k), I really liked this 'Like' of yours (in a series of pics, so I flickr fav'd it): http://friendfeed.com/e... and commented. Thanks!
- Micah Wittman
.68 6986/10194 Someone wrote a great article on the comment-like ratio a few months ago. Search on FriendFeed is crashing on me... I'll try to get the link.
- Mitchell Tsai
Thanks Mitchell (btw, search crashing on me too - lots)
- Micah Wittman
1316 comments/20221 likes (0.06), according to Windows Calculator, although I probably screwed up.
- Tyson Key
A recent change in FF: now the comment count shows total number of comments (previously multiple comments in one thread only counted as one) http://friendfeed.com/e... so all the numbers above are from the old methodology....
- David HC Soul
My new ratio: 0.76 all time (old methodology .52).... this week 1.39
- David HC Soul
Looks like my ratio as flipped again (comments back to dominating again). Seems to match my own awareness I've lately been commenting without Liking (commenting is my inherent recognition of value to me and the additional Like is when it merits an extra bump to help discovery by others).
- Micah Wittman
Darn - 0.52. I guess I need to say why I like something a little more often :-) Liking this thread because I was wondering the same thing recently. Has anybody worked out the average from the numbers here? </islazy>
- Andy Bold
Andy, scroll upward and you'll see a couple calculations from before (January: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81)
- Micah Wittman
Rick, you mean that face with glasses I photoshopped tint into with an apparently disembodied arm which is actually very much attached to my eldest son? It's mostly just me :)
- Micah Wittman
Thanks, Michael. Yes, you have a rising tide of comment percentage (oh, wow, you were one of the originals from January - cool!)
- Micah Wittman
Yeah, that's a decent upward rise in comments, Nicholas.
- Micah Wittman
.6 (6,000/10,000) 3rd update - Now it's time to flip this on its head. My goal is to have (16,000/16,000) next time I post here. Regardless of what happens, I'm just looking forward to the next 10,000 comments, likes, posts, and new relationships I make here. It's all good!
- Michael Fidler
1.76 (7539/4290) My commenting habits haven't chanced much, but it felt like I clicked Like a lot less, and this ratio confirms that for me.
- Micah Wittman
.82 as of right now. edit: on January 8th it was 0.39 -- when I saw that, I decided to make more of an effort to comment. When I hit 10k "likes" I decided I wouldn't "like" anything else until I also had 10k comments.
- Bren -- Making Contact
Jimminy, I'm copyrighting every single number. It's kind of a honeypot ;) Actually, it was curiosity mostly, but I also hope to build a sampling (small and self-selecting as it may be) for anyone who might want to analyze it.
- Micah Wittman
Wow I didn't realize I was so out of whack!! 12.23 that's got to be a record (and I don't even import my feeds with the summary as a comment)!!
- Chris Myles
Thanks JA, Chris (wow, 12+ is unusual :), Serkan and Nine!
- Micah Wittman
0.89 (17818/19913) (Somebody better make a cool ass graph of all this data!)
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Micah.. I told you I take my likes seriously; ). You *might* want to ask (in a separate post) what percentage of likes were used to "bookmark" a post or save it for later VS actually "liking it". I NEVER used like for that.. but I did use a private group that if filled with my own topics (and comments)..
- Chris Myles
OK, so statistically, what ratio results in better interaction on FF?
- Jason, Mosquito
I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience.
- Micah Wittman
So I'm fairly balanced, it appears. I would imagine it's because I try to comment on every post I like. That's not always true, obviously. But mostly it is.
- Jason, Mosquito
Just clicking "Like" seems too easy. I feel like I should say something, too.
- Jason, Mosquito
wow, what a difference time makes, when i 1st posted on this thread, 6.43%, now = 1.25%, for a 5.18% difference, :o (and this is the earliest post to date i've recovered of my activity on ff)
- chaz2b
chaz, I think there's been a big fluctuation for most people (maybe not that much). This is the oldest post on which you commented that you've recovered?
- Micah Wittman
that was my third post... It's interesting to see how the number has changed. of course, I manipulated the number to a degree, because I stopped "liking" things for a while...
- Bren -- Making Contact
Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically.
- Micah Wittman
true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. I have changed the way I use ff rather considerably, and I think for the better.
- Bren -- Making Contact
Thanks Paola, Michael, Artemko, J. and Daniel!

Our business personality is dry as twigs. I'm not allowed to have fun because the people in our field are drama queens and get offended at the slightest thing.

My question was sparked by an interview Mitch Joel did with Rohit Bhargava on the Six Pixels of Separation podcast. Rohit also wrote a book called Personality Not Included. Google Books link http://books.google.com/books...

LOL I had the same issue for the longest time calling Time Warner. Up until last summer, if I had an issue, I had to use a pay phone. A. PAY. PHONE.
- Admiral Anika
i can't wait until 20 years from now when we no longer have to send handwritten letters via carrier pigeon, but can communicate through a wire by repeatedly opening and closing a circuit to send codes. how awesome will that be????
- mike fabio
Are you using Google Voice? If so, it might be blocking the number you are calling.
- David Damore
@David: the block is happening from the LA jury duty hotline's end of things. I called from a 952 area code cell phone and got the same thing.
- mike fabio
I think ALA should replace membership dues with a pessimism offsets program. That way, you can justify your pessimism by knowing that you're pumping money into renewable optimism programs.
- Greg Schwartz
Thanks to this free shirt, Twitter can do no wrong. Twitter is amazing and beautiful and perfect and amazing and beautiful and perfect and amazing and beautiful and perfect and amazing and beautiful and perfect and amazing and beautiful and perfect. #ftc

Leo confirmed today that someone he nominated got accepted. They are doing it by hand so, yeah...
- Johnny Worthington
I don't believe I was in the 100K list. Tad and I were nominated on the day they went out and got in the day after the first round of invites. But we were nominated by someone at Google, so that may have made a difference. That being the case we both also were able to give out 8 nominations.
- Lindsay is in 20-ten
Did Leo say if that person had invites to give out?
- Kol Tregaskes
How did Leo confirm it btw? I wouldn't know how to tell? I only believe I was the first 100k as it's been said that only the first 100k get invites to give away.
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol - Did my comment not help? Tad and I were nominated but we also had nominations to give out.
- Lindsay is in 20-ten
no. Will patiently wait for one. No hurry
- lelapin
I was nominated by two people. I got my invite on Oct, 2. It was less than 24 hours.
- Mike Fruchter
Lindsay, Mike so you didn't register in any other way? You got access purely on the invite?
- Kol Tregaskes
I submitted for an invite a LOOONNNG time ago as soon as I found out about Wave. But I know that I got in via nomination because the Google employee is a friend of a friend that I didn't previously have in my contacts list and he showed up when I first got into Wave. No other way we would have connected. Update - just confirmed... my invite email says that he nominated me... so yeah, I wasn't in the first 100K.
- Lindsay is in 20-ten
Guys, if Lindsay was already in the first 100k queue and someone nominated her, wouldn't she be bumped up? That's how it works, I think.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
But would my invite email say I was invited by someone if I was in the first 100K?
- Lindsay is in 20-ten
Just saw your edit Lindsay so it actually says in the e-mail that you were nominated. OK, I don't have that.
- Kol Tregaskes
My invite email says: "Thank you for signing up to give us early feedback on Google Wave. We're happy to give you access to Google Wave and are enlisting your help to improve the product."
- Kol Tregaskes
I was nominated 3 days ago and I'm still waiting.
- Mike Doeff
Mine says "[name withheld] has invited you to preview Google Wave!" Of course, with the name of the person who graciously nominated me.
- Lindsay is in 20-ten
I applied for an invite when Google fist announced Wave but guess as just an ordinary Internet user was not high enough up the pecking order to get one. Will have to wait until it is opened to the general population. Pity as i wanted to asses it for elearning.
- Daryl Hunt on FF
Same here but I was luckily in the first 100k. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I'm still waiting for my invite. Tad kindly nominated me.
- Roberto Bonini
I have been sent one, but not yet received it.
- Travis Koger
from iPhone
I think there where just 10-20k users invited yet - I guess, the 100k invites will only be reached in 6-8 weeks! They are doing it manually! *doh* This is so stupid!
- Dieter Schwarz
I was nominated 3-4 days ago, haven't got my invite yet :/
- Patrik Johansson
My nomination was from someone who themselves had been nominated. They received eight invites to send out and I believe none if the eight that they sent out (mine included) have been received yet. My nomination/invite was sent last Thursday.
- Travis Koger
from iPhone
I submitted for an invite a long time ago, but didn't receive access. I was nominated by someone days ago, yet haven't received an invitation.
- Irma Vermaat
Irma I'm in the same situation. I'm still hopeful. . .
- Heather Solos
“Patience is a virtue, Possess it if you can, Seldom found in woman, Never found in man.” I don't have an invite yet either. Trying this patience thing. Not sure it's working for me. ;)
- Eoghann Irving
I was nominated on the 100k day -- still waiting, like a kid waiting for Christmas.
- Rob Fisher
I was in the 100k and invited two people the next day. As of yesterday neither had gotten their invite. I'm thinking they'll start flowing after the weekend if they're really being done by hand.
