Thanks... it's *semi* safe, it does include some f-bombs. Wish I could easily shrink it down a bit more. Anyway, it was kinda sad :( I keep hoping things won't go that way... this Exciting Phase has lasted for a solid 6 months so far...

Reminds me of the joke about the phases of sex... The 1st kind of sex is Smurf Sex. This kind of sex happens when youfirst meet someone and you both have sex until you are blue in the face. The 2nd kind of sex is Kitchen Sex. This is when you have been withyour partner for a short time and you are so horny you will have sexanywhere, even in the kitchen. The 3rd kind of sex is Bedroom Sex....

The eight-part series was conceived by Bruce McCulloch and co-written by McCulloch and fellow Kids Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson. Directed by Kelly Makin, who helmed the original "Kids in the Hall" series and movie, "Brain Candy," the series is about what happens in a small town when all its most distinguished citizens are murdered. A suspect is arrested, there's a trial and many dark secrets are revealed along the way.

Hoping this will lead to an improved/cleaner interface for Facebook...I prefer Friendfeed
- Rick Bucich
so, so sad. I like(d) Friendfeed much more than facebook
- Francisco Kemeny
home run for FF.. Facebook will be able to give developers a treasure trove of data one thing that Twitter is dominating on right now. Twitter has a huge developer community but isn't managing that. Here FB is poised to be huge
- John Furrier
So classic that Robert has the first interview about this...Where's Louis? :)

How do they plan to mix the teenagers with the geeks?

here was a comment on SiliconANGLE blog .. very funny .. "Hey, since we've copied almost every innovation you've had, guess you might as well play on the company softball team!"

Nice strategic move - Interesting to see how this will integrate and looks in 12 months
- Alex Vermeule (@alexve)
to be honnest I was predicting google offer, then facebook preceed google on this, they are doing well, now rarding FF this is great, the sucess is to know when to pass to something else, the future will make the abtle wave, facebook rude for all geek it is time to code.
- abdellah
You rascal Robert, bet you had wind about FriendFeed and FaceBook merger before today? Yes? Have not used either SM apps. much UNTIL Twitter locked my account. May have been a fortunate mishap as it turns out. Getting to know the beauties of both apps. =)
- SashaKane
do you have a small amount of FriendFeed shares Robert?
- Torsten Eckert
NOOOOOOO. Damnit! I am praying that Facebook doesn't wall up Friendfeed. I was starting to build a site around Friendfeed :(
- beersage
beersage: as Facebook is trying to break their users into a more public world, I doubt that you really have anything to worry about there.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Starting to listen to this now. Hoping you are right, Rob.
- beersage
I hope so to. But regardless, I think that it was in reality necessary for FriendFeed to sell to really put the technology in front of a sufficient number of eyeballs. Facebook is probably the best acquirer that FriendFeed could have. (I would have not felt the same had FF been acquired by Google)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
The thing with Friendfeed though is how I can share things outside of a 'wall.' I prominently feature the FF widget on my site. I'm just concerned of losing that capability as I was tinkering with delivering a new site w/ content primarily running through my Friendfeed account. I am to this day unable to do much outside of the wall. I am unable to subscribe to Fan Page updates in Google reader for instance. That is what concerns me about FB acquiring FF given my goals.
- beersage
Robert sounded quite breathless in that interview. Thanks Robert.

Wow! I'm in shock. I can't wait to hear this interview.

@stephan, are you serious? FB is buying a concept, a technoloie, a structure, a content and a user list
- abdellah
now how could a team that left google resist under a unique perception system, where the leader vision is upon any thing
- abdellah
Unconvincing Paul Buchheit, the team is more exited of being part of bigger story - logical for them to move on
- patrickdh
They want a way to turn their white pages into a yellow pages and the only guy on Earth who knows how to do it, is Paul
- Stephen Pickering
It was only about the technology and the people. Most people are on also FB anyway.
- James Myatt
My guess is that Paul got a tooooooooon of options and will soon be the No.2 guy at Facebook
- Stephen Pickering
Glossing over of that "short term" question by the FF boys. It just seems more about the individuals at FF than it does the users of FF. "Their (Facebook) long term goals" Nice interview, Robert!
- Melanie Reed
Well, it looks as if pass-through of FriendFeed Likes, Comments, etc. to Twitter is down. Will it be for good? Did Twitter do this in response to the acquisition? Or is it just a regular (though curiously timed) hiccup?

Yes, I like Retaggr. I have recommended it to several people. It is eye opening as to how many social media places there are. I like FreindFeed and NimBuzz.com approach better though where you can have one login and connect with many places better though

Maybe you're supposed to take "young" figuratively? Alternatively, what would you replace the world "young" with? I don't think they're pointing to the "wet behind the ears", "naive", and "inexperienced" parts of "young" people. So young is like a compliment here.
- Meryn Stol
Job ads say "young and dynamic"? In the US, I'm pretty sure that's outright illegal according to the ADEA (unless it's a BFOQ). The only time I've seen those words in job ads are when discussing the company, not when describing the type of employee they're looking for.
- ⓞnor
youthful is not the same as young. they should say what they mean. However, 65 would be young as compared to 80, so there's wiggle room there.
- Laura Norvig
I think you should give people who write these ads the benefit of the doubt. "young and dynamic" is such a logical pair of words... It also sounds better than "youthful and dynamic" (first has better rhythm) and I honestly never heard of the words "sprightly" and "brisk" until I looked them up in my thesaurus. --> What do you *expect* them to say?
- Meryn Stol
but like "not yet cynical" I also think they mean "not yet distrusting"... So maybe they manage to fence of exactly those people with these kind of words. Great strategy (but I don't think they do it consciously).
- Meryn Stol
I searched sf bayarea craigslist jobs for [young]: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/search.... The results are: soliciting egg donors (sounds like a BFOQ to me), teaching young children, helping young adults, maintaining young street trees, teaching young people, contact Stephen Young, helping young people, impart your expertise to the young, organization and culture in a young company -- egg donors aside, I see *nothing* looking for young people. Where are these job ads Joelle is talking about??
- ⓞnor
I find ageism to be silly both ways - it is absurd to think that someone young could not be experienced - I know kids who were inventing business at 12 and would be extremely experienced by 25 but a ridiculous recruiter might not pay attention long enough to notice. I also have hired someone who was 62, and she worked for us till past 65 happily, as enthusiastically and dynamically as...
- Iphigenie
I think a woman in her sixties working "nthusiastically and dynamically as someone 30 would have" would qualify for this "young and dynamic" label. You need to give the ad writers the benefit of the doubt though. I hope there will not be some kind of police who chases after people who use the term "young". It's just a word!
- Meryn Stol
Meryn, in the US, there are in fact "police who chase after people who use the term young". Those police are named the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. They are the same police who chase after people who use the terms "white", "male", or "single" in job ads. I believe many countries are similar, including for example the Netherlands, which passed the Equal Treatment in Employment Bill in 2004.
- ⓞnor
Onor, White or male is far more specific than young. These terms are almost unambiguous. But then, lawmakers sometimes don't really know where to focus. At least they'll please old, grumpy, cynical people like Joelle this way (to just characterize what I think about obsessing over such a word). Maybe the laws in the UK are still different.
- Meryn Stol
Sometimes I wonder where the principle of giving people the benefit of the doubt has gone...
- Meryn Stol
Age discrimination law in the UK: http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwed.... From the "guide for employers": "Avoid references, however oblique, to age in both the job description and the person specification. ... Avoid using language that might imply that you would prefer someone of a certain age, such as 'mature', 'young' or 'energetic'."
- ⓞnor
For widely practiced discriminatory practices, the time for "benefit of the doubt" was gone many years ago. Minorities endured decades of cat-and-mouse games where people said "good character" instead of "white", or "robust" instead of "male". The impression of discrimination *is* discrimination, because it sends a hostile message. Anyway, "young" is 100% explicit -- you have to twist and contort to tell me that "young" *could* mean "young at heart" or "younger than that really old person".
- ⓞnor
Re UK Law: Wow, extreme that even "energetic" cannot be used. I think this is going WAY to far.
- Meryn Stol
Meryn, thanks for the old and grumpy, silly young man ;) Seriously though, in business situations it is important to be precise and aware with the meaning of words, because for example in a job ad you are clearly saying who should and shouldn't bother to apply - and people who come from minoritized groups are already internally discouraged, so it doesn't take much to exclude them -...
- Iphigenie
" The impression of discrimination *is* discrimination, because it sends a hostile message. " - I consider that a slippery slope. Let me tell you, in general, I'm looking for energetic and *non-cynical* people. I make an exception for Joelle on the cynical part because she seems so damn competent.
- Meryn Stol
And please, anti-discrimination guys in the UK (or Netherlands... where I live after all) come after me because I want people who are not so cynical. After all, it MIGHT imply I'm looking for teenagers.
- Meryn Stol
Meryn, energetic has been used to unfairly exclude people with certain kinds of mild disabilities, from asthma to certain kinds of diabetes etc - what does "energetic" have to do with the ability to do a job where you sit at the computer all day, that is so important it needs to be set in writing in the original job advertisement? If it is just "fluff" then it doesnt belong in the ad, and since it is in the ad, there must be a reason
- Iphigenie
Uhm, what about the ability to "energize" a team? Or to do work fast, instead of slow?
- Meryn Stol
Also, because I'm looking for "the best and brightest", women do not have to apply with me anymore.
- Meryn Stol
The ability to energise and motivate a team would not be described with the terms "young and energetic", would it? "inspiring" and "leadership" might be used for that? Similarly I really hate jobs that ask for "track record that demonstrates" because that would certainly make a 22 year old hesitate to apply (that wording was found on a job aimed at fresh graduates/PHDs, how silly!)
- Iphigenie
I think I'm gonna to follow Joelle's (probably very wise) advice and leave it at this. :)
- Meryn Stol
You just make the job description about the job and skills you need, and that might include "intangible" skills such as being a motivator or having a good network. You try to remove anything that is about a subjective mental picture - such as young, energetic etc. because the subjective unconscious mental picture *everyone* has for almost every job is profoundly biased towards a North...
- Iphigenie
Joelle, there's this principle from distributed system design that's says so much as "be conservative in what you sent, be tolerant in what you receive".. I think that applies here very well. I praise people who go to lengths not to be misunderstood, yet failing to do so does not mean there's any discrimination going on.
- Meryn Stol
But it *does* exclude people - for example saying "10 years experience" excludes very precisely anyone with less, but it is totally arbitrary, because some people are a lot more capable than others, some people have worked a lot more on a particular technology (because they did just that) in 2 years than others (who only dabbled) in 10 - so it is a meaningless number that has no real...
- Iphigenie
" the subjective unconscious mental picture *everyone* has for almost every job is profoundly biased towards a North European style 30-something young male " - You have statistics on that?
- Meryn Stol
Yup - plenty of examples. "Blink" has a whole chapter on that, how for example "professional" and "male" are measurably correlated, as are "white" and "good" etc. I think film and TV made it worse, because they made the pictures even more "visual" than before - so if you are short or ugly or fat or female or colored or speak funny etc. you don't match the "professional" "smart" or "leadership" mental image, and it is a disadvantage
- Iphigenie
Hmm, I must admit that I distrust anything by Malcom Gladwell by default ever since I've seen some negative remarks about his research. I've seen him being accused of cherry-picking facts to fit his story. If you have Blink at hand, can you say who Gladwell is citing?
- Meryn Stol
The mere correlation of these concepts do not support your much specific assertion though. I certainly believe the tendency is there, either stronger or weaker.
- Meryn Stol
Maybe it was Gladwell who jumped to conclusions?
- Meryn Stol
This is well researched and measurable, from promotion patterns, psychology tests, bias tests - i have a few of the gender links in my feed (see http://www.diigo.com/user... too). But they have been measuring it for years at http://implicit.harvard.edu/ for example. Think about it though - what kind of stories were in the books you learned to read with, what were...
- Iphigenie
Well I believe you have done reading on it, but I don't think this counts as statistics supporting your assertion. This is not to say that I don't believe you, I think you're at least half right with it. I mainly wanted to point out that while you were talking about mental pictures, you have a mental picture of the "generalized other", and especially what he or she thinks yourself. It's good to check up and that now and then.
- Meryn Stol
I also sense you think you're different from most people in this regard. Have these other people just not seen the light? How come? Did they miss some essential learning moments in life?
- Meryn Stol
Joelle, I think the main thing I want to point out is that if you're talking about people believing in myths, you must be very sure that your belief that people belief in myths is not (partly) a myth in itself. Otherwise we can just reduce the discussion to why people don't check their beliefs.
- Meryn Stol
What's with the trolling today Meryn? I dont think I am different, I am not any more bias free than anyone, although some of those biases are different simply because I grew up in a family where the friends' circle was unconventional - so I lacked some of the classic biases in Switzerland. All you can do is try to be aware of them. Try some of the bias tests, it is an interesting thing...
- Iphigenie
Joelle, all I want to know is where you get your knowledge from, and if you don't know, you must be very weary, because you may see the world differently than it is. People having biases is one thing, showing that biases work towards actual discrimination is something different. One could hypothesize that biases play a role in how different groups are treated, but you can only prove it if you have manage to compensate for all other possible factors.
- Meryn Stol
Hmm, reading back to the statement that triggered my questioning, I see I have gone wrong.
- Meryn Stol
And to go back to job ads, there are a lot of things that are discrimination, because they are not objectively justifiable - like demanding a precise number of years, or a degree from a certain set of universities (seen recently in the UK, must be from the "top 10"), or demanding a "new graduate", or saying "salesman". As a business you cannot be careless and write job ads (or contracts, or marketing material) without carefully thinking it through.
- Iphigenie
By the way "I'm looking for energetic and *non-cynical* people. I make an exception for Joelle on the cynical part because she seems so damn competent." made me laugh - I might sound cynical but it is not cynicism, there is no acidity or acrimony (it would be pointless) - it's more some kind of resigned weariness... And I come across, in real life, as very animated, dynamic and...
- Iphigenie
... and on top of that, I indeed have resorted to some "trolling" I'd say. Especially with the "How come?" Sorry for that.
- Meryn Stol
"resigned weariness." - well yeah that at least fits the "old dog" stereotype a bit... Reminds me even of "learned helplessness" which is a phenomenon which I believe is first demonstrated with actual dogs.
- Meryn Stol
but i am not an old dog at all, just a very experienced young and dynamic go getter :D

I told you before that this combination is kind of hard for me to place. "A pessimist with a cheery personality" you said before. :)
- Meryn Stol
I suspect women in science or technology, or other minorities going in fields where they are so far from the norm as to be a curiosity will totally understand - there comes a point where you get tired of having to prove yourself over and over every time, have to be so much better and so much more careful and so much more everything just to get over the hurdles. Tired of having a lot of...

Meryn, i think it comes because people see "pessimism" as some kind of defeatist attitude - the pessimist gives up, the optimist fights on, seems to be the cliche. But pessimism and optimism have NO correlation with hope or determination. There are many cases where the pessimists tries harder (because aware of the huge hurdles ahead) whereas the optimist gets complacent (it will be...

Hmm... Interesting expansion. I think I can best be typified as an optimist who never learns from when things were harder than expected. :) There's a word for it in Dutch which I can't find the English word for. damn... Like "feeling more capable than you really are" - all the time. :)
- Meryn Stol
But this personality is great for venturing into uncharted territory, taking on new (and big) things. It might be that if I would think of things as hard as they really are, I wouldn't bother with them. I live in a permanent state of "almost there". :)
- Meryn Stol
Meryn - sorry to scare you but there is a chance that after you have been a pioneer venturing in uncharted territories a few times more, you might start sounding more like me. Uncharted territory starts to feel less "new and exciting" after the 6th or 7th cycle of it - and yet you can probably notice I am still planning for more... But this post is simply because these unconscious...

"one of the things that tickles my desire to fight " - hmmm... Do I infer correctly you're driven by the hope for "righting wrongs"? Indeed, bringing important subjects to others' attention is a noble goal. But for example with hiring practices, I'd rather go the route of hard power: Fire - or at least threaten to fire - all people who hire "irrationally". What you say about that?...

And of course, it's my optimism who says I can do better than merely talk about wrongs. It's not the result of a calculation, it can't be calculated with current algorithms and/or computing power I think.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to study the other interesting things you wrote today!
- Meryn Stol
I think the "young & dynamic" ads are usually from old and decrepit businesses (or at least following that old model) trying to stay alive in a new business culture they don't understand.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
Chris, maybe they mean with young: Someone who understands this Twitter-thingie. :P
- Meryn Stol
Meryn: it is just lazyness but it is not something a company can afford - they don't just cut-and-paste their contracts without checking, and they cannot afford to do that with job advertisements because these are official contractual businesses. How would you feel if you read the perfect job ad, describing a paid position to do exactly the kind of research and writing you want to do, and then it had a some line that they want a family man, or someone with at least 35 or... it'd be silly, no?
- Iphigenie
Trying to think of some examples I have seen recently

"Settling on the artsy approach" heh. **OUCH**
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
Well sometimes you cannot indeed do any better, because when you are hoping to make people think or change, then art in all its form is just about unbeatable - music, film, photography etc. all have bashed open doors especially when it comes to prejudice. Not all art, but art is often a way to pointing out the unthinkable in oblique ways, or twist received ideas (I love to bash received...
- Iphigenie
I agree that art can be powerful for changing minds... But you've got to come up with some really good art then. And either you need the leverage of a huge ad campaign, or it needs to go viral, which means crafting the message/video/whatever would be much harder still.
- Meryn Stol
Opinions of Mondrian notwithstanding <g>, what came after grunting and pointing was scratching on the ground or cave wall. Communication (in terms of making a real connection with another human being) in this linear experience is still limited by language in a way that more directly immersive experiences like the arts is not. The mechanics of the human organism may be predictable, but the organics of the human mechanism are not as easily mapped out statistically.

Meryn, I'm not so sure - I think even bad art can poke :)

Friends of mine, who I didn't know at the time, and I still talk about watching the Screensavers in early high school, and how it turned us to a life of geek.
- Nick Ciervo
Ah yeah, the good ol' days. I still miss the screensavers and x-play (yes, I know it's still on, but it's been f'd over by G4 to the point of being unwatchable) So many great memories of screen savers when it was live... I still laugh at patrick + hammer + IBM glass substrate disk drive = kaboom. :))

Dang, I'm still mourning the loss of "The Site."

I found Tech TV on Dish Network in the Fall of 1998. I loved Tech TV. Then G4 killed it. But Leo and Revision 3 recreated it.

I miss Tech TV. Best television for its day.

Shawn: Same here. Also got extra channels so I could watch Tech TV.

Foxtel had it in Oz for about 8 months before it was canned by G4. Was certainly a staple.

According to that, I must have been 8 when it launched and didn't get it until 2001 I believe. I truly thank you guys for helping me go forward with my tech interest. Thanks Leo and the TechTV'ers! TSS and Call for Help forever! :D

dang! i was 6, 11 years ago! that's when it all started for me! becoming and developing into the tech nerd i am today! has it really been that fast?!

Why, in this day of MTV8, Food2, and Military History Channel, can we not have something the even resembles TechTV. I got the "expanded digital" package from Comcast way back in the day just for TechTV. Wasn't Chris Pirillo and you working to get something similar onto the interwebs?

Still Leo, I think the TechTV crowd has truly moved on to many good things though, between TWiT, Revision3, and others.

Those were the day I reminisce. Screen Savers was the best.

sad, but i enjoy the content the ex-tech tvers are putting out more than anything they could release on a cable network

Well we know the last day of ZDTV when was the First?

I miss TechTV. It was on channel 64 here and when we got YES network (which I love) TechTV got dropped from the lineup. Then Comcast bought them and killed it...ugh it's good to see the stars from there made their own sites and continue the tech talk online.

I miss Tech TV so much. I miss the Screen Savers, Call for Help, and other shows that aired on Tech TV.

While I like the old TechTV/ZDNet shows, I like what's replaced it just fine. Long live the TWiT Network!

I miss Screensavers and Fresh Gear, but I also love Attack of the Show. X-Play is a problem child... the talent is outstanding, but the format has been jacked with so much that it's hard to watch.
- Roger Benningfield
For a brief moment, the television taught us about it's replacement, before awakening to the reality of it's own doom. (The Screensavers was terrific!)
- Chris Cox
ZDNet/TechTv on DirectTV. Was the best, too bad they couldn't fill up 24 hours a day with programming. The Thing about the Screensavers is that it was hugely entertaining in addition to informative. Right now, TwiT is informative but doesn't have the polished feel that broadcast tv or some of the Revision3 shows have. This isn't bad, just different.
- Steve Helder
loved screen saver & call for help, we used to get it in Abu Dhabi. Was so glad when I got an ipod a few years ago that you started TWiT.

Join the chorus of those who miss. Leo, from another old guy liberal arts major who worked in radio and became a self-taught techie to another, thanks for blazing the trail.

I discovered TechTV in early 2003 when I was home recovering from some minor surgery. Got hooked on Call for Help, The ScreenSavers and Fresh Gear. I was just "learning" to make my way around the PC and these shows were incredibly helpful. I really miss those programs! Thanks to Leo for carrying on with TWiT.
- Grace Adams
would be great if the old show were put on-line somewhere best dam tech tv ever!

I still remember the day I learned of the beginning of the end... all I could think was, "Poop!", and, "That Morgan Webb chick will never make it as a show host". Keep the TWiT going, Leo!

I still to this day feel a void at 7PM my time when The Screen Savers used to come on, but I make up for it by tuning into twitlive.tv and everything feels a little better. Besides, TV was so 1999 anyways!
- Mike Lewis
I miss The Screensavers soooooooo much!

I miss TechTv also but With it gone we are getting better content and more of it than ever. Also it is from the best. Like Leo, Patrick, Kevin, And Alex I think It was for the best

I so miss TSS and CFH. I also miss Silicon Spin (but Cranky Geeks makes up for it), Fresh Gear (Oh, that Jim Louderback was sooo easy on the eyes!) but seriously, I think I really miss CFH but thank G-d for TWiT.

I still miss coming home, turning on The Screen Savers and finding out the latest on Tech. Watch Fresh Gear and Call For Help... sigh... Thank God for TWiT.tv Hey leo, when will you have Cat Schwartz on TWiT?

Well, this decision came from thinking about a) how FF has become the hub of my soc web life and b) how annoying it is to read out-of-context @replies from other people Twitter friends in my FF home stream. So I thought, why should I annoy others with mine. So Kathy, I do still "manage all things from here." I simply go to FF first to post anything I want to share, and let FF push it to Twitter. I still get chatty and converse on Twitter, but my FF subscribers don't need to see all that. Make sense?
- Mark Traphagen
Gotcha--thought you were saying you entirely deleted the connection, which I wouldn't want to do.
- Kathy Fitch
Wait, huh? How did you manage to eliminate @replies posting from Twitter to Friendfeed without removing all of twitter? I didn't see any setting in Friendfeed to filter that out? Where is this?
- April
I didn't, April. I removed my upfeed from Twitter in order to eliminate the useless @replies on FF. It was the nuclear solution, and only works for me because I now post mostly from FF. If there were a filter to eliminate just @replies, I might reactivate the Twitter feed. What I really want is the ability to filter out other people's @replies posted to their FF streams.
- Mark Traphagen
Just for the record, I generally unsub from people on Twitter who pipe FriendFeed there.
- Akiva
How do I stop the feeds from duplicating? I like FF into Twitter as I'm here more than there, but will eliminate it if it bothers peole.
- Molly
I only push FF postings into my Twitter feed if it's something that I would post on Twitter anyway. Since I've started posting to FF more often, my Twitter stream would appear to others as nothing but one sided updates otherwise.
- Sharon McPherson
Ok, removed one of my twitter accounts. I'll leave the other one only because I post good stuff there (personal development/time management) that I don't post directly here.
- April
Mmm, interesting, I had those thoughts last week but was thinking of a concept behind the use of those services. As long as the 'duplicated' one is in harmony with what you produce, then it's all good. Having personal conversations applied for the merit of your answers being 'backed' by digital users can also be tempting. I follow Christine Lu's updates from FF as from twitter, whenever the situation calls for my passage through one service, but she only has the feed imported I think.

Alas Mona, I think it is becuase it is easier to throw money at something 'over there' rather than deal with the systemic issues inside our own societies.
- Johnny
Mona, I agree with you 100%. Though, my views may be somewhat stronger: I don't believe in giving money to "help the children in Africa" or "sponsor a kid for a $1 a day". Most of the money doesn't reach the poor kid. I help out at local homeless shelters and donate my family's old blankets to them. We need to look after our own, especially in a recession.

And I never mentioned cutting off aid, but I think a lot more Americans would concentrate on domestic issues, if made aware of the current state our nation is in.

How about "cutting off aid to developing nations" until there's not a child in America without health care, that goes to sleep hungry, or sleeping in cars and cardboard boxes? If anyone thinks America's "social net" prevents this from being an everyday reality, I'll have to respectfully disagree.

Agreed - there are a lot of social boundaries that are difficult to cross. Ignorance is a big obstacle to lots of things. People don't know what resources or options are available to them, and they lack the skills (training through education) to be able to seek them out. A lot of them just resign themselves to their situation simply because they don't really know any way out of it or can't do simple things like afford clothes that are nice enough to wear in an office job.

And one of the biggest problems is, when uncultured, uninformed people try to help save the world, they at times do more harm than good -- especially since they are so set in their views in lieu of opening their minds to see things from the other side. It's not about "Quick omg we need to help, let's do x and x", it's about long term solutions without disrupting the peace. No one is saying one should care more about the other. It's more about "Hey, let's not forget we have MAJOR domestic issues, too."
- Mona Nomura
from IM
I don't think that greedy myopia is unique to government though; I think it's a feature of most organizations over a certain size and complexity, when it becomes difficult to evaluate success in the short term and people start to have personal ambitions that are opposed to the goals of the organizations themselves. I see the same thing in businesses too; the public and private sectors just come up with different mechanisms for enforcing some measure of accountability.
- Jim Norris
Oh I definitely agree with that -- our economy and a lot of failed corporations are due to greedy individuals. Is it human nature that makes us this way? Or are we products of our (capitalistic) society?
- Mona Nomura
from IM
Yeah, people seeking shortsighted solutions often end up being less effective than they could be. But there's a legitimate question there, and there are significant and troubling tradeoffs that have to be made: how much effort (in the form of time and money and lives) do we spend defending victims in Darfur versus children in the US who lack health insurance?
- Jim Norris
Or education, since we spend significant dollar amounts *on* education. I think it's more of a bigger picture issue. How can we re-think our system to better our country? What do we need to do? How do get the public involved? To actually care?

I'm not sure you can blame the state of the economy on greedy individuals, in the sense that there have always been greedy individuals, and there probably always will be, and so as a political society it is not within the realm of possibility to eliminate greed in individuals. We do spend a ton of money on education with rather mediocre results. The first question I'd ask is why are the results in the U.S. anomalously low compared to other similarly developed countries? I don't know much about education policy, so I'm just talking out of my ass at this point, but part of the problem is that the balance of power between federal, state, and local governments...

Jim - all of those are extremely valid questions and dependent on the person answering's background, the answers would most likely differ. My number one question lies simply with checks and balances. And Victor - thanks for those links, I'll check them out. I have to sleep now, so good night all.

At some point there's a fundamental question of what the purpose of government (generally, and in particular for the U.S.) should be. Is it just a legal agreement that gives up certain limited rights (e.g. to vigilante justice) in order to provide for the common defense and protection of human liberties? Or does it represent a more humanistic view of the U.S. as a society who is...

See, women are simple too... I start talking, and they suddenly have to go to sleep. Maybe it's just me.

Touché, Jim, but it's actually *really* simple. It's called EST and 3am! I'll answer in the morning. Thanks for your input, your thought provoking comments are always more than welcome. :)

Ok, I await your response. I suppose for the good of the Feed I should catch some sleep too. Otherwise you won't get any exciting new features/bugs to waste your time with tomorrow. G'night!

Speaking of links, education, and our current economic situation, see http://tinyurl.com/dhxt7s, a thought-provoking critique of MBA education and the extreme narcissism it creates
- Victor Panlilio
Victor, it's probably not only MBA programs themselves that are to blame (although many executive MBA programs, in particular, aren't exactly academically rigorous), but also the general willingness of so many organizations to value that degree over experience. A degree should be one piece of the puzzle when evaluating candidates, but shouldn't be the thing that trumps all other characteristics.

Alan, isn't this like the compatibility layer that Apple used when migrating people from OS9 to OSX? Even still, great if it frees Microsoft from the burden of backward compatibility.
- Sprague D
yep, I think it's virtualization similar to what apple did for the OSX jump.

* Cleaner and cool look and feel (FriendFeed is already clean, this makes it a lot cleaner) * Different font style * Highlights friends comments with baby yellow (instantly know that the user is already your friend) * Highlights your comments with baby blue (it’s cool to see your own comments from river of comments. Looks good when you are a distance away your computer, makes your...

This userstyle brings the FriendFeed conversation to another level by instantly letting you know… 1) Your own comment (Powder Blue) 2) Your friends comments (Light Yellow) 3) Your non-friends comments (Normal FriendFeed Comment Color) 4) Likes (Light Pink)
- AJ Batac (/-_-)
As FriendFeed becomes popular, you’ll definitely need some kind of instant and attention grabbing color that catches your eyes and tell you where you left off in a conversation. Hope you like it.

installing - lovely- although there is something in having the "main area" diff. from the rest of the screen as in the original design - must play and see what works better for me
- Naor Mark
wow that was fast... I don't mind the gray, but this is a nice option for those complainers who don't
- Nathan Chase
Switched already and I'm lovin' this script - much nicer!
- Sally Church
I cleaned it up further. If you've downloaded it already, edit and change this line (.bar {border:none !important; background:none !important;background-color:#C8DCF5 !important;}) ;) much better without those borders on bars ;)
- AJ Batac (/-_-)
(too lazy for looking up the line - re-installed :)
- Naor Mark
Same as Naor, but yeah it is nicer :-)
- Sally Church
I can't tell... are you mimicking the effect of the little yellow halo around the comment bubble when it's inserted into a page you're viewing? Ah... there it is... the halo's still there. Might be nice to have the entire comment's color fade. Skill Level 2.0 ;-)

Wow, this style is gorgeous! Blows the default beta away. Still no fan of fixed-width but if devs go with this style and the new functionality, it's enough win for me.

Really enjoying the Cleaner FF. By the popularity of this thread, I'm assuming many are not really happy with the gray background and colored sidebar boxes.
- Ricardo Vidal
I personally have not much trouble with the new color scheme. Try removing the avatars, they are really noisy. Just try to experience the difference.
- Meryn Stol
colored and + fontsized the post titles, as i prefer to catch the posts rather then the comments, it really works.

Haven't gotten the new look >.<

I changed the background for #f8f8fc because it doesn't look as good when it's just as white as the main column. Having it an off-white like that is a lot nicer. Just a suggestion.
- Chris Charabaruk
Also, I turned off highlighting of friend comments (although not my own) because you all chat too much. :)
- Chris Charabaruk
AJ, you da man! I like it very much. :)
- imabonehead
I tweaked it so all it really did was get rid of the gray background, but left the font sizes and colors alone. Now it looks REALLY good to me. Will screenshot it now. Thanks, AJ!
- Josh Haley
Great job, AJ. Soooo much better. I hope that FF notices that we like their original clean design better and incorporate it into beta again so that I don't need a script for this.
