And yes, the wiminze do find the boy attractive. The great thing is he doesn't take advantage of it at all. He's remains humble and extremely gracious. He made captain early this year (West Point grad). He's probably headed back overseas come February.

You mean Marines? No... but he just completed his Master's Degree. Owns rental property and rides one o' them bullet motor-sickles. The boy has the world by the tail.

Oh and he played DB for Army. Got a look from a few scouts, even a couple of tryouts, but nothing panned out. He's just glad for the shot.

Indeed, I do. I was so jealous when someone posted from the west coast about eating crepes filled with Nutella, whipped cream and strawberries, but there was nowhere I could go for that. I was in Cincinnati yesterday and took advantage of Jungle Jim's proximity to pick up some things I can't find in town, and when I saw crepes (which I will NOT make myself), I nabbed 'em! Now I need the other three ingredients.

No, it's disgusting. The worst such hazelnut cream produced, sticky, oversweet and at the same time flavorless. There are bunches of much better similar creams around, not necessarly hugely more costly: Novi cream is hugely better and still in the same price range!

- SanalMutfak (M)
@Eta, nutella is disgusting. not hazelnut creams. The point is that nutella has next to no hazelnut in, that's part of what makes it so bad. Again, try some better hazelnut creams, stuff that does not feel like sugary glue in your mouth but rather is silky with a distinct taste of toasted hazelnut. You will taste the difference.

With my two, one of their favorite games was one in which I was the toy. I'd lie on the floor on my back, and one limb would mysteriously pop up into the air. I'd keep up a pattern of left arm - right leg - right arm - left leg - repeat (or whatever), and they had so many laughs trying to make all four limbs stay down. I think they were around 10-12 before they really figured out the game and were strong enough to hold down arms AND legs. Until then, it was a favorite. :-)

About the same. G+ has proven to be too noisy for me (and I'm already sick of most of the things in my G+ feed being about G+) so I haven't shifted there like others. That being said, my engagement on FF was already low due to being tired of social interaction lately. I'm just kind of burned out on the internet right now.

London has shit for bookstores, so I mostly save up book shopping for the two or three times a year that I go to Toronto, and then I spend all my money supporting the specialty shops there, because they do things that Amazon doesn't, like hosting author readings (and it's becoming more common for the authors to be friends/acquaintances of mine)

I hate going to big box stores so much that if I shop in person, it's usually at a mom & pop. But I do order stuff online from chains.
- laura x
Yes - but then I also feel grateful about having the few extra dollars that allow making that choice.
- Rachel Walden
+1 to Rachel - I am well aware that I'm lucky to be able to decide to shop locally, many people have no choice but to go to Wal-Mart. We have no "true" Mom & Pop grocery stores, but our Hy-Vee is pretty close and is definitely more expensive - but I prefer to shop there, really.
- webgoddess
There are great charts about how much money stays in the local economy when you buy from mom and pop's. I just like being a regular at a place where the people know my name and my preferences. :D
- Andy
It depends on the item and the value-add of a mom & pop store. There aren't many of them in the area that meet my regular shopping needs, so I'd need a reason to shop there in the first place. I do tend to go to local hardware stores rather than buy stuff at big box stores, mostly because the people working there know what they're doing and aren't just stocking shelves. However, I'm not going to buy toiletries from the local drug store because the pricing and selection are not worth it.
- bacon futurist
i mostly shop online when i do buy. but for specialty items or for stuff when i want a little bit of expert opinion, i go mom & pop all the way....like buying film for my holga. dude even offered to show me how to load the film.
- tiffany
I have kind of a weird mix right now, without a car - I'm walking to more local places for things, but also doing more ordering online and getting things wherever I can walk to that have them.
- Rachel Walden
I think about it, Derrick, and I mix it up a bit. I buy stuff frequently at the local comic store and hobby store, but on bigger-ticket items, I can't ignore the discounts I might get at a place like Amazon. I want to have them both, so I patronize them both.
- Don't feed the Steve
I typically buy from places that give me a good shopping experience. I'm not as concerned with whether something is "local" or "chain" or "big". Sometimes a big chain store will give me a better experience; sometimes a small mom & pop store will give me a better experience. I pick based on which experience I prefer, not based on whether it's big or small.

Anyone care to share their story of piano lessons? Were you forced against your will? Took them because you wanted to? Have any funny anecdotes for this newbie? Do you still play?
I didn't take piano lessons until my sophomore or junior year in high school. I had decided by then that I wanted to be a composer, and at least a rudimentary knowledge of piano was a necessity. So it was entirely voluntary, and I really enjoyed it. The only difficultly was that I was 10-12 years older than most of the kids playing the same material, so I never participated in recitals or things like that. I ended up going to Baylor University on a music composition scholarship.
- Glen, on vacation
I knew a little bit about that, Glen. I appreciate you sharing. Still trying to figure out how I'm going to make my schedule work with taking lessons, but it's likely I'll be in a group class with people are much, much younger than me.
- Derrick
I had kind of taught myself to play (to some extent) and my friend who was taking lessons helped me fill in my knowledge a little, too. So in 7th grade, my parents signed me up for private lessons in the music room after school (the music room was basically a little closet) with the parish's organist. I remember learning a little, but feeling like I already knew so much of what he was...

I never took piano lessons but I always wanted to. Our oldest took them from second grade until her sophomore year in HS, our son started them in 2nd but quit after a year and our youngest is being taught by our oldest. So you should come on up to Colorado and she can teach you too :-)

I begged to have lessons. My parents gladly invested in lessons for all 3 of us once we each turned 6. I grew up playing duets with my mother. Sometimes she would even go down to our Lutheran church with me and we would play duets for pipe organ & piano. The only thing I hated about piano lessons was practicing. I could get through my lesson each week without it since I had a great...

I don't know why my parents never thought we might have any interest in learning (for the sheer thought of learning as well as the discipline involved, I guess), especially since my mom played piano and organ in my grandfather's church, though I did sing a fair bit in the choir when we went back to Memphis in the summer. No time like the present.

I always wanted to take piano lessons and my mom always wanted me to take piano, but we could never afford private music lessons, so everything I learned prior to the age of 10 was self-taught (piano, guitar, fiddle). 10 was the minimum age the school district allowed you to enter the school music program. But it was limited to band instruments only. (but I used the school choir's piano...

I took piano lessons from age 8 until 16. I hated it when I was younger and had to be forced to practice, but then I liked it. I still play, but just for enjoyment.

My piano teacher told me that Beethoven was so devoted to the piano that he never bathed or went to the bathroom. He had a chamber pot next to the piano so he wouldn't have to get up. I thought that was so gross and I've never forgotten that story.

I begged and begged to take piano lessons. Then I started them and hated it. Luckily I eventually found an fell in love with the viola.

My parents had a rule that before we were allowed to play any other instrument, we had to take 3 years of piano. I desperately wanted to play drums, so I tried the piano. I didn't last long enough. When you're , 3 years feels like forever. My older sister didn't make it through the 3 years, either. When our younger brother wanted to play drums, he was given a snare drum. Needless to say, my sister and I were a little bitter about that for awhile.

Organ lessons here. (Go ahead, make the jokes, but hey, I need both hands for mine. ;) ) Enlisted at age 5 after my folks noticed I could play everything out of the "big note" songbooks we had on our Magnus chord organ and had been since age 3. My folks bought a Wurlitzer spinet (2 manuals, 1 1/2 octaves of bass pedals, Leslie speaker.) I took lessons for 2 1/2 years and then stopped -...

I was forced to take them. 5 years. I don't blame my mother for this. However, I really think I would still know how to play piano if I had been allowed to try out a couple different teachers and pick the one whose teaching style worked best for me. I very quickly learned to learn the pieces by ear and fake that I was reading the notes. I had no motivation to learn rote John Schirmer...

I should probably add that now I sometimes think it would be nice to know how to play better than I do, but I'm still sad that I never felt like I could ask my parents to let me play a different instrument b/c of that 3 years of piano first rule. My brother is a bit younger than my sister and I, so the rule change didn't happen until we were out of or almost out of high school.

I played... No especially funny anecdotes. I wanted to learn how. A couple of my siblings learned, too, and now they're better than me. At least I can still kind of read music.

D!!! I just gave away my Hammond B-3 that I inherited from my folks. It belonged to my aunt originally and she never took it with her when she got married, so my grandparents gave it to my folks cuz they knew I liked to play, and then my folks sent it with me when I moved out. :D I loved the fuck outta that thing, but I just didn't play it like I used to. So I gave it to a cousin who wanted to start learning. At least it's still in the family eh? :) Anyway. Your mom rocked. :D *fistbump*

@teleken, I learn that stuff better from people than from books so maybe one day when I can afford lessons again...

My sisters all took lessons from Mr. Bogosian. I taught myself to plunk things out with one hand later, learning the piano notes via my violin lessons. mainly I loved to play showtunes. :)

LOL I'm the same way with Van Halen's "Jump". Some friends who had a band asked me to play keyboard for them for a bit while they found a permanent keyboardist, and they primarily dealt in hair band cover songs (this was back in '93 when it was less kitschy and more annoying). And of course one of their faves was Jump. Which has the most repetitive (and annoyingly syncopated) keyboard riff, and I would get so bored playing it. But to this day, whenever I hear that song...there go the fingers. :D
