I really love how this one came out - it is so hard to get texture on a black cat in black and white. The iPhone makes for a great on the spot phone and editor.
- Martha
My husband borrowed my car to go pick up my christmas present and I gave him one of his to return at the same store. Where has the romance and mystery buggered off to?
That sounds like us! One year, I just took my wife to Macy's and sat there while she picked out stuff. I had my iPod, so it was a double-win.
- ha3rvey (free hugs!)
@Sarah it's not sad, it's pure genius! well done @ha3rvery ;-)

Harvey went with his wife and participated in shopping for a new outfit. That is a gift for some couples. I myself dislike clothes shopping, not only for someone else, but for myself. So when i go with someone to shop for clothes, consider it a gift.
- Santa CW™
You guys just should not exchange gifts at Xmas! I also don't get people who need other people to shop. It's like, it's for you, just make a decision already. The companionable bit about shopping is taking a break and getting something to eat, making fun of other people/clothes, etc. but the actual shopping is best done alone.
- anna sauce
@Santa shopping for clother is good, spending hours trying random outfits asking around whether it fits you is evil! I love clothes and it doesn't take longer than 5 nanoseconds to figure out the two basic things in shopping: Do I like it? Can I afford it?
- Lui(gi) ►►
Luigi- agree, those are usually questions that you can figure out yourself!
- anna sauce
I think spending time together shopping is more about the time together. I have fond memories of shopping for my first biz suits with my husband. Pre iPod though - poor him.
- Martha

My partners have learned not to ask me a question if they don't want to hear the truth from me. Does that outfit look good on you. I will give a direct answer and the reason why as well as suggestions as to how to fix/change.. (No honey you should never wear anything out in public with writing on your ass.)
- Santa CW™
@anna yes & yes! moral support is always welcome but not necessary ;-)
- Lui(gi) ►►
Thank god for stores with the Husband Chairs.
- Santa CW™
@Santa straight honest answers are the best, thats why I never go shopping with girls... I find it kinda confusing ;-) Do u like 'em? the colour is ok, the cut is not ott, those pockets are not much to look at, well the zip looks like it doesnt belong there... there I succumb!
- Lui(gi) ►►
see.. a few honest answers and your then not going to be asked ever again. Mission Accomplished. :)

I didnt c the scheme behind all this! it's evil... love it

I've got an old Fender Jazz... you're making me want to pull it out... ran across my practice amp looking for Crimmuh lights the other day

I've been wanting a fretless Fender J-bass for a while now... I may have to start putting my pennies aside.

every joint in my body...........my arthritis hates cold weather
- VAL D. Zone
I can relate, Val. During the course of my youth I managed to break all of my fingers at least once each (no thumbs, thankfully), and I can usually tell when the rain is coming from the change in pressure in my finger joints. :)
- Bren -- feeling merry
most of the joints in my body are arthritic, the result of car crashes in the 90s.

YAY! I like that my hashtag is actually building up a small queue in the search results. :D

Nice bass! I have a Steinberger XP-2, black, 4-string V-style body with active EQ and a (much) cheaper Korean-made version, all wood, with full sunburst body and passive pickups. I want a decent 6-string at some point in my life.
- Josh Haley
Yaaay! My green Pedula and turquoise Music Man and fretless would love to come by and play.
- Martha
I've had opportunity to play around with fretless basses on several occasions, and I generally love the fluid sound they produce.

mine is an early 70s musicman, back when Leo Fender was still building them. Weighs a ton but sounds awesome.

I used it to talk with my wife, who was in Paris and Germany for Le Web / meetings last week. It was great a few times and frustratingly bad other times. Overall, I wouldn't rely on it. We're thinking of getting Vontage or a similar VOIP service and trying that overseas next time.

Thanks. I heard Skype mentioned in the FFundercats podcast. I completely forgot I had an account.
- Mike Nencetti
I adore it- mostly for cheaper long distant phone calls
- anna sauce
I use it regularly with my husband and son to call my parents in another state. The video component is the important piece for us, so Travis can see his grandparents and they can see him. In-person visits happen maybe twice per year.
- Sally: baby flier
Used in our podcast plus our family uses it to stay in touch and do video chats. Cheap to Guam, as in free.
- Josh Haley
I have Skype, but I never use it anymore. my wife wants us to set it up with a cam so we can talk with her family in Malaysia, so i need to get on that.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I haven't used it recently, but one of my main uses was playing D&D remotely using the video capabilities about 5-6 times in the past, sustained connections for 4+ hours. Occasionally, have had issues with it cutting out during regular conversations however.
- Jimminy Fuller
My wife has family in Trinidad. I think we are just too busy to realize we can use Skype to reconnect. (Castro/Cuba was in Trinidad, her family had to leave. long story...) Thanks for all the feedback :) It's not the safest place to visit.
- Mike Nencetti
Once in a long while. Mostly with family.
- Rodfather
I want to use it, but I don't seem to have any one else who wants to use it.

There are better low-cost international calling services available, at least in terms of quality. If you're in the US, check out Tremcom.
- Cristo
I use skype for International calls. Plus, if you have US account, you can call anyone in US for usage limit of 10,000 minutes per user per month, with a maximum of 6 hours per day. Also, no more than 50 different numbers in total can be called per day at $2.95(per month) regardless of the geographic location.
- ashish
I don't like having people sound like aliens or completely not be able to communicate for minutes at a time. Others may have had better luck. Like I said, it was very inconsistent.
- Cristo
I use Gtalk. Although I keep on trying to avoid using Google.
- Ton Zijp
Set it up on my parents' PC so they could talk to relatives in the US and Ireland. Set it up on my computer to verify it all worked in a call to them. Saw what I looked like in the webcam view. Vowed never to use video chat ever again.
- Mark H
I use it sometimes to talk with the grand children in LA

Mr. 7 is dying to see it. What's the sex/violence/cussin' report?
- s t e v e
A little cussing, the violence is fairly tame, although there is some combat, as you might expect. And a brief "mating" scene between two Na'vi people. That freaked me out because not because I'm a prude, but because it was all CGI and weird. Mr. 7 will be wowed with the movie, though. The Mr. 7 in me was. It's breathtaking.
- Derrick
FYI: It is also nearly three hours long.

so the 'pee-tential is high with the almost 180 minute duration....*notes to self: small soda for this movie!*

Morgan, I've been soda free at the theater since the Watchmen debut. Carried along the tide of humanity exiting the theater, I missed the restroom on my way out and drove like a madman down the block to a diner. *More notes to self: Don't go on premiere night.

REPOST!! URGENT FACEBOOK UPDATE: As of today, Facebook staff will be allowed to eat your children and pets. To turn this option off, go to settings, then privacy, then meals. Click the top two boxes to prevent the employees of Facebook from eating your family!

Things change. Some things change more than others. I've never found Facebook to be very intuitive in any case, and I don't use it enough to bother learning my way around all of the corners. If it changes again so be it. There's more important things to worry about!

I know... that's just the expression he had on his face, though. I tried to de-scary-fy him a bit. I think I'd need more paper space to get it right. This drawing is just so small. You're welcome, Josh
- Kamilah Gill
Hi Kamilah! He can be scary, yes. :) The thing about Bill Murray... I don't find him attractive at all. Jim Belushi is a better comparison and he gave us the movie line, "Grace, I got it. Grace." Which we use a LOT. This picture was taken on a very hot day. We are melting. I love that you got the plant in the background. :) Thanks!

HALP!!!! Seriously need some advice on whether to move away from GoDaddy to another service to host both my website AND my blog myself (off of wordpress.com). Anyone have any suggestions about good services that can handle both well and that are easy to navigate?
Wait: GoDaddy is your registrar, not your host. Why do you want to move off of Wordpress.com? I would say that it probably isn't a good idea.

I keep thinking of moving my hosting off of GoDaddy, but then I realize that I don't really have consistent problems with them.

i'm registered with Go Daddy but my hosting is with Dreamhost. I've never had any problem with either.

GoDaddy cost me my very first domain name when they renewed my hosting but not the domain name. I was really pissed and blogged about it at the time.

If you were to pop into a record store and actually buy a vinyl album, what would you buy? Trying to come up with ideas for my brother's Christmas present (his girlfriend is buying him a turntable).
That's a hard choice since I like almost all music. But probably an 80's pop album, like Duran Duran or Huey Lewis and the News. But then I might also buy classic rock like some of Jimi Hendrix, I bet Hendrix kicks total butt on vinyl.
- Ken
The Dukes of Stratosphear vinyl reissue. Or Elvis Costello's Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, which I believe has some tracks that aren't on digital or CD versions of the album.
- Spidra Webster
Oh. I thought you meant new issue vinyl. For old issue, I think I'd get him one of the great concept albums. Concept albums were programmed to work with the break in-between for flipping the album over. It's not quite the same on CD or digital.
- Spidra Webster
It's hard for me because we have a pretty large vinyl collection and part of the fun is browsing through the rows of records for a true gem, so I'd actually suggest maybe a copy of one of your favourite albums of all time and a gift certificate to a local record store. I'm normally not into gift cards substituting for choosing something of your own, but for me so much of vinyl is about the tactile experience.
- joey
a tie between "Chips From The Chocolate Fireball" and "The Dark Side Of The Moon"...or maybe "Wish You Were Here", not sure which. kind of off DSOTM lately.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
The LP isn't "Chips From the Chocolate Fireball". That's the name for the CD that compiled both "25 O'Clock" and "Psonic Psunspot". Not only have those now been reissued as separate CDs, but the original EP/LP have been reissued. Not sure if they're only part of the deluxe box set or whether you can get the LPs separately. Probably only box set.
- Spidra Webster
Picture discs are awesome too. I used to have one of the soundtrack to Miami Vice, like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-JA...
- Ken
@Spidra: that would explain why i can't find it! my cousin had "Psonic Psunspot" as a cassette and that's how i first heard it.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I liked flipping through records and finding obscure 70's rock that never made it to CD. I once bought a Santana album for $2 just because the picture of Carlos was so funny.
- Rodfather
Great concept albums: Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.
- Spidra Webster
There are other albums I think of as "concept albums" even though they're not gimmicky because the songs and tracklist work so well.
- Spidra Webster
Rodfather is right that it's great to target albums that have not (yet) been reissued on CD.
- Spidra Webster
I don't know what kind of new releases you can still buy out there... if you buy used make sure the seller tells you there is no scratches because that really sucks getting a new LP that skips.
- Ken
I started a collection about 12 years ago or so and had quite a few and had a turntable stereo thing.. ended up giving them all away, I just never listened to them.. lazy me... my computer is everything now.
- Ken
Excellent idea, Bren. I knew I wanted to get him at least one Beatles album but was torn on which ones to consider. Revolver was my favorite Beatles vinyl as a kid. :D Thank you everyone for all your suggestions! I'm going to print this entire conversation out so when I hit the store, I don't forget anything. LOL This is going to be a lot of fun. I haven't browsed through vinyl in years...
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Any idea what kind of music your brother likes? That would make this whole thing a lot easier.
- Curtiss Grymala
My son likes 70s rock vinyl, Neil Young seems high on the list. He pokes around in used record stores all the time looking for stuff. Most reputable used record stores won't sell anything that is not 100% pristine (unless it is clearly labelled as not).
- Brian Sullivan
I bought an LP by "The Big 3" at the Sally Army store because it was Mama Cass's debut and I hadn't heard it since it first came out. Never made it to cassette or CD as far as I know. I have several hundred LPs and a few 45s. Some of them only exist on vinyl. Those are keepers.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Tom Petty has a box set coming out on vinyl...it may be out now. Im gonna pick it up it looks good.
- Mary Carmen
I suggest going to a thrift store and just buying up a ton of records.
- Admiral Anika
Mary Carmen, you're my kinda gal. :D Anika, I didn't even think to hit a thrift store! LOL I feel like a dunce.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Id buy some blues - John Lee Hooker on vinyl...
- WarLord
The thrift store around the corner from me has hundreds of vinyl in very good condition for like 50 cents an album. I'd buy many of them for the WTFness of many of them, but we find a lot of gems in thrift stores.
- Admiral Anika
Around here you would be wasting your time at thrift type stores -- all the records will have been picked over by the time you get there unless you are lucky or become a regular. What would be left would be damaged, undesirable or both.
- Brian Sullivan
Well if he's a DJ, then I'll definitely get him a real turntable like the Technics SL1200Mk2 http://www.panasonic.com/consume... - and if he's really into DJ'ing then of course you should buy him some kick-ass electronica LPs that are not issued in other formats :)
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Wow - it is on CD. Listen to "Young Girl's Lament". But I'm glad I have the LP anyway.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Todd Rundgren "Something/Anything",..maybe one of the greatest albums ever and its a 2 disc album,...download some of it on Limewire for a listen,..incredible stuff and you'll be surprised how many songs you know.
- Sheri Kelly
I would get him something where the cover art on CD doesn't compare to what was available in vinyl/ Some thoughts are Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers.
- April Russo (app103)
Grateful Dead - Workingmans Dead or The Band's 2nd album (self-titled). Two albums that just have to be heard on LP
- Philip Tomlinson
I agree with Anika. Just buy a bunch of really cheap ones, try to find some that might actually be quality and others that are for comedy sake.
- Robert DeBord
Definitely depends on what he likes in music. Something classic, though, to keep with the vinyl feeling.
- Martha
I still have a couple of John Denver vinyl albums. Also a Saturday Night Fever album, an orchestral album of superhero theme music and a couple of Barry Manilow albums.
- Jason Huebel
You really can't lose with any vinyl. Vinyl just sounds better.
- Jason Huebel
I'd love to have one of those new laser turntables that doesn't use a needle. (they are pretty popular in Japan) Needles eventually wear out the grooves and the laser doesn't, so it helps preserve your records. They are awfully expensive, though. http://www.elpj.com/main.html
