...i think this just proves that Google is routing all their translation requests to low-wage workers in the South Pacific, and that some of them have senses of humor... .LOLz
- .LAG liked that
LOL... I think they fixed it, though. It doesn't translate that anymore

Bagaimana Israel sampai mempunyai senjata nuklir? Sejarahnya cukup panjang.

US Congressman visits Gaza, has a reaction. He's kind of perturbed. "If this had happened in our own country, there would be national outrage." - http://www.reddit.com/r...
"Do not, I repeat, do not do this in the US! Someone will pull out a real gun and shoot you with a real bullet." - epearson on reddit

This used to happen in Dublin back in the 50's and 60's with a local eccentric known affectionately as "Bang Bang". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...

If it was any other country than Japan, I would think so too. But I have seen enough of that nation to think this is not a setup. Play acting works only with the Kansai Japanese though, going by the comments here: http://www.reddit.com/r...
- vijay
I think I would have attempted what Neo did :)
- Alfredo
It would have been AWESOME if someone had done that! ROLFMAO!
- vijay
hahahaha...YES...my kind of people! :-D
- Anna Haro
Anika, wasn't that awesome!? I love that lady LOL!
- vijay
Yes. Watching this was interesting because in my family we do this. We have special moves and power ups (like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat) that we do and we totally fake hurt. It's pretty neat to see that as a city people were willing to play along.
- Anika
That's the way to live. :) Have fun and enjoy life. I NEED to get my ass over there to experience this for my self. Invisible sword slash FTW!

Seen on one of Mona's threads: "I like Japanese anime"...The "Japanese" there is irrelevant. All anime is Japanese. If it's animation from another country, it's, by default, not anime, even if it's done in similar style.
Not true. They still label it as anime.
- Shevonne
Sorry, Shevonne, but as an anime nerd, you won't win this argument with me. If it isn't Japanese, it isn't anime.
- Alex Scoble
Alex, I have been watching anime since I was a tot and they still label it anime. Perfect example. There was an anime called "Candy Candy" that Italians made a sequel too. It was still labeled as anime. =P
- Shevonne
Alex, if you are an anime nerd, you are my brother, not Robert's !!! :)
- Alemsah Ozturk
Next hair-splitting will be at 7 o'clock, ladies and gentlemen.
- Josh Haley
Hahaha, no it's still Italian food. It's called by where the dish originates from, I suppose.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
How about a yellow canary bird? The word is "redundant" not "irrelevant".
- Douglas Hopkins
What's the point of arguing if you are going to lose? And your point is also irrelevant, Douglas, as well as redundant. And people can call it whatever they like, but only animation made in Japan is anime. Period.
- Alex Scoble
so when used in Japanese, the word anime means all animation, yes, but I also do think that the term anime (re-)borrowed into English mostly does (or should) refer to Japanese animation specifically. However, this gets into the issue of prescriptive vs. descriptive linguistics and it's a fairly hairy one that I think it would be best to avoid.
- Chieze Okoye
I love how Alex sets up his posts so he always wins
- Rodfather
Oh... So it's kinda like how every team that wins a sporting championship inside the USA is World Champion but every other competion around the world doesn't get to call itself that. Like baseball... If a team in Japan wins the title, they can call themselves Champions but they can never call themselves World Champions cause the only true Wolrd Champions come from the USA...
- Johnny Worthington
Why avoid it? It makes for fun conversation in the "You're doing it WRONG!" vein. I guess I should happy they didn't say "Japanese cartoons"?
- Alex Scoble
I bet tons of the cels are colored in Korea.
- Josh Haley
Brian, now seriously...if GM farms out part of a car to a Japanese supplier, does that make the car any less crappy? No.
- Alex Scoble
I feel the same way about American 'Champagne'
- Steven Cains
There's no such thing as American Champagne. Champagne is ONLY made in France, therefore there can be no American Champagne. Any alcoholic beverage made using the champagne method outside of France is labeled as a sparkling wine.
- Alex Scoble
Why does all this sound like "argument" in order to hear the sound of your own voice (metaphorically speaking)?
- Brian Sullivan
Indeed, so why do people insist on calling Korrbel a champagne?
- Steven Cains
Things "originate" from where they were designed (including specs for quality controls), not where they were assembled. --- Animation done in the "Japanese Animation", aka "anime" style generally still fit into the "anime" category, except they are usually prefixed with their origin, Korean Anime, Italian Anime, etc. --- Just because it's Japanese animation does not make it "anime" as well, e.g., Miyazaki-san's stuff is closer to "Cheap Disney" than "anime" --- And not all canaries are yellow.
- xero
Alex... Do you know the origin of the word? What does 'Anime' mean in Japan?
- Johnny Worthington
I have no idea, Cains. And Brian, I can't hear the sound of my own voice. I'm currently listening to music via headphones.
- Alex Scoble
Well, it was rhetorical Alex. I'm just glad we're equally pedantic ;) Can we start of foodstuffs named after their country of origin (but not actually produced there) next?
- Steven Cains
I've heard about that story, Brian. Didn't hear that he went under. Doesn't surprise me though. Countries with localized products need to be very protective of them lest they run into competition from poseurs. I don't have a problem with it. If you want to make a Napa Valley Cabernet, you have to invest in the land.
- Alex Scoble
"Anime" refers to a specific class of animation that is done in a style of moving illustration and content that evolved in Japan starting in the 1980s. 99% of the time the phrase "Japanese Anime" is redundant, but there are cases where clarification is required. This falls under the art history category, not pop culture, just like "Italian Renaissance" styled art is generally redundant, at times you must qualify explicitly.
- xero
well, the issue with Champagne (and more recently, Port) is actually codified somewhere and it's illegal or against some rule or something that is agreed upon by some governing body. In any case, it's more official than some random person just saying it should be so (not a dig against you Alex, since I actually agree with the point you made to start this thread).
- Chieze Okoye
So... In Japan, does Anime refer to animation only done in Japan?
- Johnny Worthington
Yeah, it was a very clever name, guess I'll never get to try some now.
- Alex Scoble
technically there wouldn't be much anime anymore. a lot of work goes overseas these days,,,, but yeah. i like using the word anime, its better than those people who call it "manga" or "japanimation" or something else equally wrong or stupid...
- Terry O'Fee
Hehe, yeah Terry...manga is the print form and japanimation is so 80s and derogatory. Almost as bad as calling them cartoons.
- Alex Scoble
manga - that's what i mean. (never got that into manga, didnt like the black and whiteness of it. i'd rather wait a month like comics and get coloured stuff :P)
- Terry O'Fee
Technically, anime is the animated form of manga (you've got it backwards Alex), though the two are not always intertwined. This thread would have been over a long time ago if you'd just go to wikipedia... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
- xero
not always, there's a few series that get the manga after anime (evangelion, FMA, cowboy bebop etc)
- Terry O'Fee
the ending frustrated the crap out of me. the biggest letdown of all time. my first was eva. the movie made me cry...
- Terry O'Fee
I meant print form of the art/storyline style. Not that one follows after the other. They are complementary forms, but certainly one should not be mistaken for the other.
- Alex Scoble
come on, alex. faves (whatever you want to call it ;p)
- Terry O'Fee
Bubblegum Crisis and Akira are what started me off so those are tops. Ranma 1/2, Big O, Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Rahxephon, Last Exile, Sol Bianca, Gatekeepers, Hellsing, Pretear, Vampire Princess Miyu, Tenchi Miyu, Naruto, VanDread, Area 88...that's a good list of most of my favs.
- Alex Scoble
Was Big O really anime? I thought that was made in America?
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
mine? FMA, evangelion, beck, samurai champloo, haibinae renmai whatever its called...
- Terry O'Fee
GitS, Akira, Berserk, Eva, Chrno Crusade, Bebop, Aa! Megami-sama, BGCT2040, Tylor, FMA, VHD, so many good ones...
- xero
Big O was most definitely made by a Japanese studio, Sunrise Studios. You know what's funny though? When you do a search for Big O in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... they list The Big O as "Japanese anime." I feel like crying, ROFL. But hey, it's Wikipedia, so I fixed it.
- Alex Scoble
Ah, ok. Thanks for the clarification. I think Cartooon Networks involvment in the second season is what through me off. Of course, if I was a little less lazy this late in the afternoon I would have done some googling myself and found out. Ah well. It's a sign i need to get off this thing and eat some dinner I suppose.
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
Area 88 was good, but the ending made me want to smack somebody.
- Robert Hafer
I still find Full Metal Panic to be quite amusing :) Also, it's not just Champagne that is a protected product. Cheddar, Lincolnshire sausages, Eccles cakes, Pontefract cake, Newcastle Brown Ale (tho this is a bone of contention since they moved the brewery to gateshead and so shouldn't be allowed to call it NBA or dog as it's colloquially known) all protected under this scheme.
- alphaxion
Full Metal Alchemist (not panic) was awesome. And, they're making a second movie.
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
oh nice news jason! i dont know how they can continue on. interesting..

When not enough is enough. As an IT Optimizer, one of my challenges is to refuse requests for additional wares, be it hardware or software. I know that may sound counter to what IT around the world used to do. But come to think of it, why should I buy a new server if the current ones all barely reach 10% load? Now I am *not* against redundancy --...
Why BlueBird is worth its premium rate? Let's see. Not only are their drivers very polite, they also wouldn't refuse driving you to destinations "way off the beaten path," so to speak. Case in point: I just rode in a non-premium taxi. I won't name any brand, suffice to say it's a taxi many prefer. The driver seemed half-hearted driving us, and...
I hate sinetrons passionately. They're illogical. They're totally unrealistic. They have horrible cinematography and worse direction. They have totally simplistic 2-dimensional characters with bipolar disorders. And last but not least, they are plagiarized versions of korean dramas. In short, sinetrons are abominations. So, when I get my cable TV,...
It's no secret that the traffic in Jakarta is horrible. Hell on wheels, I should say. That is why I prefer bikes to cars. On the other hand, cars not only give you creature comfort, they also are status symbols. So you can imagine my dilemma here: time benefit (and less stress) versus comfort benefit (and status). Thankfully, it's not yet an issue...
What the hell is up with the huge turtlenecks they forced the guys to wear? Who did you like better: Green Ranger or White Ranger?
- Mattie Kenny
Amy Jo Johnson (Pink Ranger) is on Flashpoint now (showing on CBS). Pretty good show, just started its second season this month.
- Brad Butner
from twhirl
omg...I had such a crush on the green ranger, Tommy. <3

Yeah, you just can't beat those overgesturing M&M's... :)

I was massively into Power Rangers...which came out when I was a freshman in college. :) I had VHS tapes, clothing, costumes, dolls, bags, decor...etc. Saw the movie in the theater like six times. And the film soundtrack is what the stereo installation guys used to test out my upgraded audio system in my car in '97 because it was the only disc I had laying around in my trunk. Nothing more satisfying yet mortifying than hearing the MMPR theme blaring throughout a big metal garage.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Go! Go! Power Ranger!!! XD US version better than original from Japan... ^^

Did you put that there or is it growing on the wall or somthing? looks like them flowers ypou blow away weh n you are young.. you know them ball shapped things?
- Rob Sellen :o)
No, you guys :-) It's creepy and got long legs :-D
- vijay
Yah it looks like a cluster flock of daddy long legs! Wow!
- Carmen
Aw man! I gave too much away :-) Yup, it's a bunch of Daddy Long legs.
- vijay
you gotta hand it to the guy taking the pic. These creepies are harmless but the sheer number of them is hair-curling, especially when they are right above you.
- vijay
I wouldn't have got it without the outliers on the left of the pic.
- Christopher Harley
The loner on the left is so dead; he broke the formation. In spider country that's a big no-no =P
- vijay
Same here, Christopher. The loner and outliers gave them away. Even though I don't mind DLL and played with them as a child, I agree, vijay, the large group of them is kinda freaky.
- Carmen
I would literally go into shock and probably die if I saw this....so gross
- George Smith
that's a hell of a lot of Harvestman Spiders!
- alphaxion
wow! and OMG Micah, I have seen that wormies pics before. I read somewhere that it's seasonal and they are actually moths! And someone in the forum said it was EVERYWHERE! Nothing gets me as bad as worms. eww.
- vijay
We get bad cases of "Tent Worms" in TX, and one of the best ways to get rid of a tree that has them is to cut it down, into pieces and burn it. Can't leave 1 alive or they'll come back.
