This is clearly not my cat. If this was my cat he's have one arm shoved down into the printer trying to tear up all the internal whirling bits with his bare claws.
- Soup in a TARDIS
Too Funny! Reminds me of the San Mateo Cat Shelter where one of the cats loves to sleep on top of the laster printer where the paper comes out...
- Greg Lato
1600+ to beat the FFundercats live chat thread. I think with this real time now on all threads we're going to see some truly epic comment numbers.
- Simon Wicks
Ivan, no the picture speaks for itself. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Petr, I have no idea what you mean, but thank you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" ..
- pb:
there ya have me ! :] .... see, to be honest with you, i saw this pic couple days ago, but i let it go, without posting it ..... what does that make me? :]
- pb:
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)
- Iphigenie
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Bloody marvelous, Kol. Wish I could like it again... too cute (and help u to 500 likes).
- Roberto Bonini
I couldn't believe it when I logged on from the morning over posting it and saw it was at something 200 likes! You all have a strange fetish with cats and fax machines, hehe. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Am I the only one who saw this and their first thought was - My goodness did someone break that cats neck? It still freaks me out a little
- SteVe "Glory Juice" C
Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
So we can put this post to rest now. :-) 505 likes final count, wow! :-D Good night all!
- Kol Tregaskes
did 3 people really un-like this? now at 506. wtf (edit: uh, oh, yeah, me and 2 + 506 others makes 509. dammit, jim, i'm an artist, not a mathematician)
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
One of the best funny cat pictures I've seen! :-)

Kristian, it appears to be. Hehe, John.

It's really only social convention which regards it as inappropriate, same with Xeroxing it, like one does with their b__tocks. Wait are we still talking about cats cats here or...

OMGosh 700+ likes now!! LOL. Thank you all 702 of you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I like the KSOs much better. Run with the Injinji socks and you won't get blisters.
- Graham English
Where did the skin rub off? The classics are pretty bad in the heel area. I know a couple people who got the Sprints and didn't have any troubles with them.
- caj
What are those? They look like very interesting shoes.
- Andrew Trinh
Yeah, I think that attachment is the "signature" that my fb iPhone insists on including. Need to make ff block that.
- Paul Buchheit
from iPhone
I haven't seen anybody with the black ones yet. They look really good though.
- Daniel Zarick
Is it considered bad form to wear these as regular shoes, like around the office?
- Andy Bakun
It's generally considered bad form to be comfortable in an office (especially if you're female), so if these shoes are normally comfortable, I'd say so.
- a runcible MiniMage
i have a pair of KSO's and was expecting blisters but have gotten absolutely none. im super happy with mine. Paul, how sore are your calves? I had the deepest burn for a few days after i started.
- Kevin Pruett
I'm not so sure my office has that issue, Minimage.
- Andy Bakun
I'm considering getting those - I had to give up on the barefoot treadmill running.
- Darren
Does your office need a technician who attacks computer problems viciously and tenaciously, Andy? j/k
- a runcible MiniMage
Kevin, my feet and legs (other than the skin) feel fine, though we'll see how things are tomorrow. I ordinarily wear flip flops and also spent a little time thinking about how to run barefoot, so I was at least a little prepared. I'm not much of a runner, but it felt easier than it normally is.
- Paul Buchheit
Hmmm - I wonder if they sell those at BackCountry.com - need to go look (I used to work there)
- Jesse Stay
Paul, is this inspired by that MacDougall book Born to Run ?
- Ahsan Ali
How do they run? I like the idea, but I'm afraid they'll be uncomfortable/annoying.
- Nate Pilling
Yeah, the red is blood. It's not that bad though. The blisters on the pads of my feed are more annoying. I shall have to try wearing socks next time :)
- Paul Buchheit
If you're chafing on the heels, and they're not too big, then the prescribed answer is special 5 finger socks. My brother called them and that was what they told him anyway.
- Piaw Na
Piaw, I think they are too big. The "right" size felt a little more snug than I like, so I went one size larger, which may have been a mistake. I did buy the toe socks, but just didn't wear them.
- Paul Buchheit
Sorry about your feet! I've never seen these before. They look they would be excellent for Martial Arts as well. Are your toes still as flexible in them?
- Michael Fidler
My FiveFingers get me lots of comments when I wear them around (airports, conferences, etc.). Muy comfortable.
- Jason Miller
Oh, great. More plaster casts from Bigfoot "researchers".
- Aryn Corley
Ooh. I have never seen these before. Do they make you run faster / better?
- Winston Teo
Just saw a woman wearing these on the Red Line train in Cambridge, MA last week. First time I'd seen them.
- Ben Greenberg
Paul: Even though my brother and I got the right size, we still are forced to wear the socks for extended walking or hiking.
- Piaw Na
They make more sense than the women's shoes with the ridiculous five inch-long pointy toes.
- a runcible MiniMage
Atleast the label says they're machine washable. :)
- Ray Cromwell
Winston: the FiveFingers lessen the barrier between the ground and your foot, which allows your body to naturally compensate for variations in terrain. Some claim this is healthier and will improve long-term running healthy. Read the book 'Born to Run' for a great story and some provocative science.
- Jason Miller
I bought a pair of the sprints a few weeks ago and had a similar problem, no blood though. I took them back right away and bought the KSOs in a size smaller. For some reason in the women's version, the KSOs run a half size big, might be worth checking it out in the men's if you're concerned about sizing. Also, watch out...I loved running in these so much I doubled my routine and out of...

- andi
Jason, you just cost me $10 with your book recommendation (damn the Kindle and the easy book buying)
- Piaw Na
I bought vibrams a week ago: ran a few miles, went to the gym and wore them all the day; feeling very comfortable, no blood or blisters reported so far (as a disclaimer I usually wander barefoot at home and I am kind of a regular runner). Great also for exercising at the gym as I felt more grounded; on the other hand they are not very suited for driving, too much grip.
- Marco Fabbri
My shares already come to FriendFeed, as you know, and I won't be sending them to any other network (until forced). But appreciate the how-to.
- Louis Gray
Is there a keyboard shortcut for the new "send to" feature in Google Reader?
- Jesse Stay
So what is the code to send it to a particular room? If I wanted it to flow in the public FF I would just click 'share'.
- Paul Arterburn
Whoa, sharing to a particular room would be epic :) Would probably have to create a shortcut code for each room instead of multiple rooms...
- Zulema ❧ spicy cocoa tart
Ya, I really just have one group for this - public share or private share among close friends (private FF room). That would also let me DM the link to a FF user if I wanted a *really* private share.
- Paul Arterburn
AFAIK sending to a Room is a bit painful. I tag the item in GReader. Then subscribe to that tag's RSS in the FreindFeed Room. A little laborious to set up, but quick when sending - you just tag. And wtih GReader's pubsubhubhub they show up in Room immediately.

"Scientists at the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre and Aquarium at Portobello near Dunedin are looking at hermit crabs in a whole new light. The crabs have moved into new man-made glass shells and it's opened up a new world for those both inside the shells and out. "We brought the shells out there and sure enough in a week to ten days the hermit had decided that the glass house was better than their own house and had made it their home," explains aquarium curator Adelle O'Neill. There are over 60 species of hermit crabs living on New Zealand shorelines. They live in a shell because unlike normal crabs they don't have a hard exterior."

It would be nice if it updated automatically like WebKit nightly.
- Eric Florenzano
Henry, you will want to. The current builds are Alpha and there are many things missing like flash support. There isn't enough there right now for it to be used full time.
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
Yep, because most of the content on the web uses flash, so there is no point. That is why I am waiting.
- TheHenry
I still don't get what it gives me over Safari 4/Nightly Webkit. What does "sandboxed" give me?
- Jesse Stay
I've been living without Flash for quite some time now, guess it depends on what sites you visit. Not sure what process separation really gets you when you're running an unstable piece of software, but that's what Chrome has that no one else does.
- Victor Ganata
From what I understand Sandboxing makes the browser more secure. This http://blog.chromium.org/2008... explains how it works on the Windows platform and they're replicating the same model on OS X.
- JR Ignacio
Mathew, based on that, I get the feel that Safari is the better choice. Being around longer, even with sandboxing the length of time seems like Safari will be a bit more secure. Regarding speed, it seems like Safari still somewhat out-performs Chrome. I'm not sure what the big deal is about Chrome for Mac - Google hype?
- Jesse Stay
The other thing I don't see in that comparison are developer tools available. Webkit has amazing developer tools built in
- Jesse Stay
There is no big deal about Chrome for Mac yet really (other then it is coming). But, Chrome has been better then anything else in Windows. It is basically a wait and see game. But, to be honest there are things that a Chrome will most likely do (little things) that Firefox does that Safari doesn't that keeps me from using Safari and that in the end is what will make Chrome overall better then Safari for me. And the way Chrome handles process is a plus as well.
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
I too like the way Chrome handle processes. Given that my Mac only has 2GB of RAM running Safari all day really kills my Mac's efficiency.
- Vinko
I generally liked the experience of Chrome on Windows which is why I'm looking forward to the Mac version. The other thing with Chrome is that when a tab/window hangs, it doesn't crash the whole browser. I haven't seen any other browser that can do that well on OS X.
- JR Ignacio
Yeah, for me Safari eats as much RAM as Firefox. And that is with 5+ tabs open in Firefox and all those plugins and a couple tabs in Safari and no plugins.
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
Mathew is that with Safari 4? Nightly Webkit build?
- Jesse Stay
So why are you all still using Mac if you don't need Safari? You know Chrome works on Linux too.
- Jesse Stay
I'm not a developer and all the apps I need are Mac/Win only. :)
- Mona Nomura
Um...because OS X is a far better OS then any other that I have used. I never choose OS X because of Safari. I chose it because it is faster, more stable and the programs I use run better in OS X.
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
Rutger I don't get what people don't like about Safari. It's the fastest browser out there right now, has terrific developer options, great interface, and most of all, it's webkit.
- Jesse Stay
Chrome is webkit, too. And frankly, much faster than Safari 4 and nightly build.
- Mona Nomura
Mona, that's what I wanted to know. Thanks.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: I do like Safari but I tend to agree that one does not buy a mac for Safari. You get Safari on windows too. Chrome on Mac feels fast but its also incomplete
- Kiran Patchigolla
Np, Jesse :) Anyone else having problems un-starring? Also, on a Windows machine I would not use Safari. Nor would I Hackintosh or dual boot.
- Mona Nomura
Speed isn't the most important thing about a browser for me. Here is one big reason why I don't like Safari. When I close a browser I want the tabs that I had open, open again when I reopen the browser. And a bonus reason. All the plugins that I have with Firefox. Plugins are also the same reason why I didn't use Chrome full time when I was Windows only.
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
Mathew, what Rob said - I use a plugin for that.
- Jesse Stay
Chrome on the Mac feels faster than Safari 4 beta, but it's definitely not as stable, although it's crashing far less than it did. I heard Safari was going to move to separate processes, too, at some point.
- Victor Ganata
I tried out that plugin. But, it still wasn't worth me switching from Firefox to Safari.
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
Still hasn't crashed. Victor - that's what nightly build is :)
- Mona Nomura
Chromium has never crashed on me (I'm sure it will next time I use it though) it just doesn't have that Flash support I want.
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
Glen, I'm not asking anyone to convince me. I simply wanted to know what the differences were, and why the hype, in regards to the Mac itself. (I understand why on Windows)
- Jesse Stay
Chris it took awhile, but you completely converted me to Safari from Firefox. It's going to take a lot to convince me to switch elsewhere. I'm excited to see if Chrome has the capability to do that, but yes, it seems too early to decide.
- Jesse Stay
I am all about speed - and Chrome gives me *just* that.
- Mona Nomura
The way I see it. If you don't care about Plugins then Safari is fantastic.
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
I mean, it's a huge improvement. It's only crashing about once a day for me right now. It used to crash about once an hour.
- Victor Ganata
We like Chrome. Works fine for us. Better than Firefox 3 when it first came out. :-)
- Discount Bloggers
testing Chrome on OSX but this version is very incomplete (not really usable as main browser yet). love Chrome on XP and will be switching to Chrome on Mac when code is complete.
- timepilot
Should I switch to this vs? Firefox? Are their all the nice extensions?
- orionstarr
Joseph - Chrome is still in the early early phases (for Mac) with no extensions. Heck, we can't even set preferences. But it is BLAZING.
- Mona Nomura
from IM
I do! i'm just sayin' - The Chrome ain't so hot on the Mac
- Jeff (Team マクダジ )
Different strokes for different folks, it works better than the other browsers for me. Again, I am all about speed.
- Mona Nomura
I'm waiting for at least beta too--I have far too many Firefox plugins to give up.
- Kelly W.
I was running it for a little while, but I couldn't install the FF bookmarklet, and can't view videos yet, so I had to shut it down for now. But I'm glad the initial version is available, and I'm sure I'll use it from time to time.
- Cheryl Jones
Just heard a new browser coming out, "Rust"...
- orionstarr
Mac browser run down: FIREFOX + Features and customization - memory footprint SAFARI + fast, lightweight - lack of plug ins CHROME + blazin' fast - total lack of features, mediocre stability. I have all three browsers on my computer, but almost always use safari. It doesn't crash on me, get bogged down much, and its straightforward. I would use firefox if only it weren't such a resource sucking PIG. And Chrome would (will?) top them all once it becomes stable and extensible (?).
- Zach Landes
yes, it crashes when I load an attachment in gmail. Also it doesn't keep state of my selection ofthe drop down list . I am using it now.
- Dh'ennis Dömingö
Never satisfied with my browser, I switch constantly between Firefox, Safari, Fluid, often having at least 2 open at a time: FF for general work (because of extensions), a Fluid instance for Friendfeed, Gmail... or other sites I leave open on desktop always. Hoping Chrome can find a useful role in this mess.
- Brad Kligerman
A Buick and a Chevy is like Opera and IE. Clunky, out of date, inefficient, and out of style. Chrome's JS rendering beats nightly hands-down. Multi-processing tabs ≠ platforms. :)

Here is the configuration on the new MacBook Pro I ordered: 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X2GB 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Resolution Antiglare Widescreen Display Backlit Keyboard (English) / User’s Guide Accessory Kit So in addition to today’s price decrease on the MacBook Pro, here are the other reasons that I upgraded today and why I went with a Mac over a PC for the second time around.

Do you have any reservations or concerns about the non-user removable battery? I know the bigger screen is sexy, but is the weight of the laptop a concern?
- Arlan K.
Arlan, not really. I'd imagine that replacing the battery is just a trip to the genius bar and having them do it for you. A slight cost, but I bet it takes less than 5 minutes and that they won't charge much in labor for it. For me the weight is not a problem in the slightest. I'm also lugging around a 5D M2 and 4 lenses everywhere I go. A few ounces here or there doesn't matter in the slightest to me. It fits in my lowepro bag, that's all that mattered to me personally about the size/weight.
- Thomas Hawk
including tax and 2 day delivery about $3,200.
- Thomas Hawk
I got a Macbook Pro in mid 2007. At this juncture I have no plans to replace it, but I don't think I'd buy another Mac right now. Even with the price drop, it's still twice as expensive as a nearly identically configured PC laptop. I could deal with the Apple tax when it was under $300, but these days it's just become absurd. While I generally feel that Apple's laptops are excellent quality, they're not worth an extra thousand dollars.
- Eric P
Hi Thomas, that's great to hear. The battery is less of a concern, personally, than the weight and portability. But if it's not a big deal to you, I'm sure that beast of a machine will be a joy to use!
- Arlan K.
Awww...Is this your first? The first time's always special....congratulations stud!
- sofarsoShawn <right here>
actually not my first. I used Macs in college extensively. I was the editor-in-chief of my college newspaper and we laid the whole thing out every week on Macs. The older ones. Mac Plus, Mac SE30, those guys. After college though I went to work for a bank and ended up on the PC train for a good 15 years or so. But my last two primary computers (my current one and this new one) have been Macs.
- Thomas Hawk
Can't wait to hear how you like it Thomas. I'm really tempted to get the 13" and a 24" display. Or I may way for updated IMacs.

"Astronomers have developed a new technique to accurately determine the ages of millisecond pulsars, the fastest-spinning stars in the universe. The standard method for estimating pulsar ages is known to yield unreliable results, especially for the fast-spinning millisecond pulsars, said Bülent Kiziltan, a graduate student in astronomy and astrophysics at University of California Sant a Cruz. “An accurate determination of pulsar ages is of fundamental importance, because it has ramifications for understanding the formation and evolution of pulsars, the physics of neutron stars, and other areas,” he said."
