it must be part of the API, since fftogo seems to include a time stamp on the comments
- Trent Olson
I'm sure they do store the timestamp, even if it isn't currently displayed.
- Mack D. Male
Yeah, it's in the api, all comments & likes are timestamped
- Glenn Slaven
I think this is a perfect plan. The only issue I might have is that the time information might take-over the conversations. It might just look more cluttered than FF already is.
- Ryne Nelson
concur, very useful to have. Make it a display option. Those who would think it's clutter can turn it off then.
- Alexander Falk
It is in the API (I use them in fftogo). I vote that the timestamp should appear as text when you hover over the "thought bubble" to the left.
- Benjamin Golub
All comments are time-stamped in AlrertThingy and feedalizr
- Stephen B
from Alert Thingy
What about a comment alert?! How do you follow conversations on ff!?
- TommaSorchiotti
Not sure if this will add to the functionality, but should be something they can try out...
- Dennis Goedegebuure
Not sure a comment alert is necessary. Comments bring the post up to the top of the timeline, which makes it available for anyone who is currently paying attention to Friendfeed. (Not sure why anyone would want their attention brought to Friendfeed if it isn't already there, that would be a huge productivity drain).
- Jason Wehmhoener
Please, please remember that the whole world doesn't run on PDT. I don't want to see timestamps in my FF in gReader and have to always try to guess whether the west coast is 17, 16, or 15 hours behind. If you must display timestamps, please put them in GMT. Setting the timestamps on my FF page/in my FF feed to be correct in my local timezone would be even nicer.
- James Polley
yeah ! and a hide fonction for each comment
- Jonathan
we know which came first... but in n argument the comments can edit. that makes time stamping very important so we know when someone made a change
- Noah David Simon
a timeline function in general would be nice, make everything more timeframe friendly
- Ruben Llibre
Show times either in GMT or in my own timezone, and just make it a tooltip for the quote balloon or something. Don't want it to look cluttered.
- Pat Hawks
just make the time relative from each comment, so I know who said what when in perspective. like 5 minutes later Noah David Simon said. <--this opens up
- Noah David Simon
Is i really important to know when every single comment is made? Only the last one would really be useful, could have 'last comment on june 1 at..." right beside the date of the post.
- John Duff
If the timestamp is a tooltip, then it isn't really "in the way." Maybe we can have all the timestamps as tooltips, except the most recent comment will have the timestamp printed out below it, like John said.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
I am so tired of entering an empty room and talking to myself for twenty minutes. lol
- Russellreno
A needed feature for sure I agree. I suggested this to the FF feedback room some weeks ago.
- Mike Fruchter
<--- try hover your mouse cursor on that little dialog icon
- topo
Sorry it's not more obvious, but if you hover your mouse over the comment icon you will see the time that the comment was made. Thanks for letting us know that it's hard to find! The feedback is much appreciated.
- Ross Miller
I believe they are timestamped but this data is not yet displayed.... you're right !
- David Berrebi
other than timestamp I also want to be able to like the comments individually =]
- Özgür D. Cyric
This thread shows what happens when nobody reads the comments before theirs
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I think it's neat. It's only a popularity contest if you look at it that way. I think its another cool way of finding cool posts and people to follow. Data is what you make it :)
- Steve Isaacs
Plus it seems very well designed and implemented - props to the programmers!
- Steve Isaacs
I agree with Mona. Down with these popularity contests.
- Shawn Farner
Interesting informations and statistics in FFholic user's feed ---> http://friendfeed.com/ffholic like "%12.0548 of FriendFeed users are private! (data based on FFholic.com)"
- Erhan
i don't mind popularity contests. i mind the people that take them too seriously.
- Morgan
To me, this site is less about the "most popular" people, and more about finding most popular items (and by person). It is interesting at least.
- Louis Gray
And thanks to 'popular' people like you, LG, that share items, the 'popularity' is spread evenly :) I just don't like seeing people getting feelings hurt over lists and websites. We're no longer in high school...
- Mona Nomura
It's funny, while I see an email everytime someone follows me, I have no idea who many people that is now. I don't even know where to look. I don't think I even want to know :)
- Johnny Worthington
I want to like this entry, but you have a pic of arrington.
- Alan Le
What's nice right now is that most people really only like entries that show up in their FF screen, so this gives us (at the moment) a broader spectrum of the various FF niches.
- Justin Long
Erhan why U deleting the Fun comments? Is this a private club? That is why ffholic is FAIL Good luck!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Igor: I don't find you as a FUNNY boy and also I have no relation with this good job. Also ALSO also bye BYE!
- Erhan
Create an application that finds the most interesting people who AREN'T being followed and I'm there. Maybe.. scan popular links shared by popular users and see who actually shared it first.
- Shawn Farner
I saw this post in the most-liked last 24 hours list - great job!
- Erhan
Maybe create an application by the people mostly blocked! And I am not talking about Spammers but with relationship to solid comments! There are some interesting controversial people on Friend Feed who have been blocked by a few A-Listers and many others just jumped on the band wagon! It is too easy to make a judgment by first impression without really knowing about the person! Anyway just alternatives to most likes!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Holic: Congrats to you! ; ) We want more features, graphs, statistics and also daily, weekly, monthly reports to our emails. I want to be your premium member for these. : )
- Erhan
thanks erhan they are all on the way ;) thank you for your great support!
- FFholic.com
No problem Benjamin, you and Paul opened up a lot of possibilities
- Bwana ☠
APIs are powerful things; FriendFeed (and RSSmeme) both have them and I want more people to understand that it isn't complicated to use them.
- Benjamin Golub
good read though I closed my blog......via feedalizr
- bvs
A lot of folks including myself are intimidated when they hear "API"
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
I never thought the RSS mechanism would work differently with the API. Ignorance I guess. I have some experience working with Twitter and Jaiku APIs and I don't think they did this. I could be wrong.
- Bwana ☠
I just wish there was a general solution to allow everyone to use this great plug-in. I tried having a go to get it to work on my Tumblr blog but it wasn't having any :¬( Good solid HTML widget to add to my CSS is what's needed ;¬D
- CannonGod
Pat Hawks already had a proof of concept for Blogger, I thought?
- l0ckergn0me
I'm working on a php script that merges Friendfeed likes and comments with Disqus comments. Still in early stages, but let me know if anyone would like to take a look (twitter klecu or comment on my blog http://klecu.com/article...)
- Kevin L
When I blogged this (May 28), no Blogger solution existed.
- Bwana ☠
I just went through the process of adding friendfeed to my own site (holgr.com) last week and also found your site. It's a good starting point! Unfortunately the "default" options are pretty scarce and not really flexible. Fortunately - however - the API is so simple that you can create a nice embed yourself using the documentation.
- Holger Eilhard
As much as people give Microsoft a hard time. they are still here and as strong as ever. Microsoft is not going away anytime soon. The numbers prove it.
- Michael McGimpsey
does anybody have independent studies of whether hotmail, or yahoomail, or gmail actually makes money?
- wilsonng
The hosted version of Sharepoint / Exchange is in beta as a service from MS. It will make them billions and establish them almost instantly as the most important "cloud" provider for businesses.

And 300 of those 320 million are spammers.

Igor: it's a dude named Brian in Chicago who writes that Blog.

320 M is truly a big number.i wonder how the geographic distribution looks like.
- Davide D'Incau
from fftogo
How many of those users are active? I have a Hotmail account, but I never use it anymore.
- William Beem
Those people are not early, medium or late adopters though, those are people who don't want to embrace anything new... Those users don't typically migrate to better services - why would they be interested in a social network?
- Rich
email is a very private matter -- we'll see how well msft does at converting that to a real user relationship. doubtful
- Jason Goldberg
People also still put gasoline in their cars... ;-)
- Mary Anne Davis
How many of these are throw away accounts or simply abandoned? Still an impressive number but well inflated.
- AJ Kohn
AJ: none: those are all accounts which have been used in past 30 days.
- Robert Scoble
Makes Twitter and Friendfeed seem like small fry when you think about it. Clearly they both still have a LONG way to reach critical mass and get numbers like MSFT has for Hotmail/IM.
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
i still keep my hotmail/msn just so i dont lose contact with some people. its a hard magnet to avoid
- Ruben Llibre
I have a bunch of old account running about .. Thankfully they all forward to my Gmail Accoint :)
- Tyler (Chacha)
from twhirl
This is a good example of an audience's understanding of what the picture looks like our of their immediate demographic. People have a hard time realizing what's outside of their own 'fishtank' so to speak. There are people that like MSFT, there are people that love using their online services, there are people that truly would rather keep things IE/Live/Office/Windows because it's what...
- Enrique Gutierrez
from twhirl
Robert: Really? so we're talking 320MM ACTIVE accounts, plus xMM of lapsed/inactive. Interesting. Thanks for clarifying.
- AJ Kohn
I had four accounts , each created when I forgot the password of previous one, I use none now, only gmail.
- sirishkumar
I very seriously doubt these would be active or real accounts. Plenty of dead ones or ones used for spamming. Ask them if they can give you a number of accounts that were logged onto in the last 3 months once a week. EDIT, ok, I did not read your article, shame on me, so they have active users. Still don't see how chat accounts can be seen as weapons.
- Gerard van Schip
Why did Yahoo self-destruct in regard to Microsoft? Although it is a minority opinion (which I have detailed previously) Yahoo may in fact not need Microsoft to the degree that many think.

What is Microsoft's growth though, as compared to Facebook's?

WOWOWOWOW ... You guys are putting your release schedule on steriods! code monkies!!! I like all the new feature improvements! keep up the good work!
- Susan Beebe
This caused me to dump alert thingy even though there are differences. Always liked Twhirl too bad it has picked up some hiccups from Twitter which is already the meme of legend in these parts...
- Mark Forman
I'm in! This will def cause me to use friend feed more.

This is a nice feature. Just upgraded to the new version to use this. But your blog is never unblocked by the Great Firewall here.

Comments inline work well, but make it hard to keep a track of whats going on. I guess thats more of a FF issue tho, nested conversations are much more complex than the flat twitterlike comments.

I guess I'm getting used to it - without doubt, it's an improvement, thnx Loic and Marco

Still not like the interface. Still not see the reason why we need a specific app for friendfeed. Some stuff could be sorted via a easy firefox extension e.g. notification.
- Benjamin Kohler
from twhirl
I'm not sure about this, but my main concern.. why does my FF feed in Twhirl look almost completely different than what I see on the web? Am I the only one seeing this?
- felix
Love the new changes - a few issues still with the commenting. It remembers the past comment when I write a new one instead of clearing the box, and it also clears out my comment box every time the feed refreshes.

Hey guys, I understand the value of tagging taxonomies and I understand how much more elegant and less intrusive they can be when they're built in to the system instead of grafted on to another feature of the site (such as comments). My point with sharing the above photos was the serendipity of two very different pictures that shared a similar uplifting spirit and shape. :-)
- Kevin Fox
Kevin: Yes I understand, I was only suggesting in fact :)
- directeur
sorry kevin : ) I just saw you and a similar post(attention profile alert! : ) then I promoted my idea here : ) But thanks thanks thanks for your comment ;-) My ego is ok now :-)
- Erhan
I agreed with you (and Duncan) about embrace or miss out. But when it comes to non-tech, non early adopter blogs I'm not sure I buy into Twitter/FriendFeed as hugely meaningful things to embrace, at least right now. Thoughts?
- Robert Seidman
Robert - Just my two cents. It's the dialog. It's connecting people and solving problems or just discussing 'the state of affairs'. Best I've seen yet in a variety of ways ... not to mention the fact that I reconnected with YOU after 13 years or so right here and was happy I did. Lots of positives. Light years from Seidman's Insider on ListServ but that's a fond memory.
- Charlie Anzman
I had a website even in 1994. But people on 2400bps (even on 14.4) modems preferred e-mail and USENET. It's certainly light years from then, but I don't see how FriendFeed is necessary to embrace (right now) for a blog about TV metrics. P.S. e-mail is still very popular. For the RSS feed for that site over 50% of the subscriptions are e-mail.
- Robert Seidman
I'd like to find out who's using FriendFeed outside of the tech and social media realms. Is it really THAT widespread? Or is this just the effect of the really, really early adopter phase of lifestreaming?
- Mark Dykeman
I wasn't allowed past airport security at Heathrow Terminal 5, as my t-shirt had a picture of a gun on it. It was a picture of a transformer holding a gun. - http://reddit.com/goto...

This is what happens when you put poorly defined rules in the hands of an underachiever with a double-digit IQ and an inferiority complex. What's next? Requiring passengers to be fully anaesthetised when they fly?

Well first they have to make the thing illegal. Then they have to make a fake representation of the thing illegal. Then they have to make talking about it illegal. Then they have to make a picture of the thing illegal. Only THEN can they make the picture in your head illegal. You can't expect to implement thoughtcrime overnight, people!

Anesthetizing travlers pre-flight would solve all sorts of problems. Plus you could stack 'em up like cordwood, get lots more passengers on each flight.
- Jason Wehmhoener
Jason: Cory Doctorow once suggested the same thing on a podcast (TWiT, or Mac Break Weekly, maybe) He called it something like Ninja Airlines. A ninja would shoot you with a tranquilizer dart, pack your stuff, and put you on the plane. Once you arrived, he'd give you the antidote and slip out the window before you completely came to.
- ha3rvey (wants confit)
Yah, covered by the press and the BBC now, so I revise my earlier declaration of shenanigans. Still, it's not policy, it's just one officious, ignorant, jumped up little oik with a rule book and the power to tell people what to do. We call them "jobsworths," as they can be identified by their cry of "it's more than my job's worth to let you through with that on."
- Slappy Line
toothpaste. ever seen some of those national geographic specials? wow.
- Jeremy Toeman
I think the fact of a giant metal bird flying over would have traumatised them enough already. Civilisation has a pretty good abiility to destroy native cultures, even when it's not trying to. The whole area should, in my opinion be turned into a no-fly zone.
- Slappy Line
I would give them a mirror, that orange paint seriously! How can they think that helps them when they are out hunting. It would be like Barney the dinosaur hiding in snow!

For you west coasters: it's not New York City or NYC or the Big Apple or any other literary flourish you want to use: it's either "the City" or the specific boro (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, the Bronx).

The airport is several miles south of the city proper...kinda like the New York Giants or the Los Angeles Angels.
