Earth Day 2009 - The Big Picture - Boston.com
Show all
Today is Earth Day, a day set aside for awarenesss and appreciation of the Earth's environment, and our roles within it - this year marking the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. As a way to help appreciate and observe our environment, I've collected 40 images below, each a glimpse into some aspect of the world around us, how it affects and sustains us, and how we affect it. Happy Earth Day everyone. (40 photos total) - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet

Is Microsoft Trying to Become FriendFeed? - http://www.techcrunch.com/2009...
Is Microsoft Trying to Become FriendFeed?
"Microsoft’s social networking strategy around Windows Live gets a little more meat on the bone today. In November they announced a new strategy that brings in activity streams, FriendFeed/Plaxo style, into a Windows Live home page. The goal is to give users a view of what their friends are up to on various social networks around the Internet. A list of the current partners is in the image below." - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
Interesting to see MSFT switch strategies with Windows Live. I tried Windows Live for a few months and found it pretty much completely worthless. They didn't understand licensing for photos and wouldn't change their onerous terms with your photos. I'm still not a fan today, but this certainly makes it a little more interesting to take a look at. - Thomas Hawk
I don't know if Microsoft is trying to become FriendFeed or to simply steal its thunder before the masses find it. One thing I do like about their idea, or at least my perception, is that they can pull from Facebook. I just wrote earlier today about the niceness of combining all of my comments from a number of sources into one agitator, but it would be nice. Just think, if we could borrow the idea from Discus and write a comment to a post and everywhere it resides, the following comments would sync. - Damond Nollan
Think about it, one of my friends on Facebook who sees the same post I share on Twitter and FriendFeed can now respond and interact with comments on the blog, FF, and Facebook. Talk about efficiency. I think that's it. - Damond Nollan
It's not nearly FriendFeed when it doesn't have commenting and likes. Also, FF has real-time now. This is just "lifestreaming" and this is even done by mybloglog, of all services. FriendFeed is "a little more" than lifestreaming, if you ask me! - Meryn Stol
I just logged into my Windows Live account after not having logged in for a few months. I had 11 new messages. One was a happy birthday message. The other 10 were spam. - Thomas Hawk
I wonder when Google starts its own lifestreaming service. They already let you specify links to your different social network profileson your Google profile. Lifestreaming is quickly becoming a standard feature for any big service. Google is the only one of the big guys who doesn't have it. - Meryn Stol
I've been curious from the time I first started looking at Live.com why they don't integrate with the Zune social. - Craig Eddy
Craig: My guess is because the divisions don't talk to each other. Typical for large companies. - Meryn Stol
Meryn it also has to do with Executives not understanding Social Media nor wanting to go there. I overhead Apple's director of social media mention that was their problem, and why you don't see iTunes being integrated with other Social sites. - Jesse Stay
I don't think Microsoft will like most of the conversations with userts - Keith Barrett
Facebook already fed into Live Messenger and Live Mail. - Arawak
the service is still very clunky. My links to FF for instance don't hyperlink. The way it shows Flickr photos is a bit crude. There's no way to really interact with posts. It's also stupid for them to be showing ads on the service now. Grow it and then monetize it. I'm surprised execs at MSFT don't get this concept. I'm surprised, but not really, that this is the best that MSFT can come up with. - Thomas Hawk
Totally worthless, i'm sure Google is developing for a better idea then only "jump on the bandwagon" :) - CantorJF
Here is my activity stream to see what I mean about it being clunky. http://cid-cc5c6d9b36ce0565.pr... Not all of the Flickr entries show photos. Even where they do usually it's just a couple of thumbnails. The Twitter entries don't hyperlink the link to FF, etc. There's no real way to comment or like things, etc. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas: I agree with you. Microsoft's efforts here are second rate. Or, even worse than that. It's amazing how poorly they do sometimes. - Robert Scoble
I think the way they display Flickr photos is pretty nice though. Playful. - They should slightly randomize the angles on with which the photos are rotated though. That would make it more lifelike. - Meryn Stol
That is the first time I have heard Scoble criticize Microsoft. In their defense Microsoft is a massive organization and thus change happens slowly, and any attempt to emulate FF is a step in the right direction, FF being ahead of the curve as it is. - Garin Kilpatrick
Garin, you are right, but I don't think MSFT being large is a justifiable defense. There are some very basic things that they can do to improve this interface in short order. I'm just not sure they get it in this area. They do a lot of cool things but units there just don't seem to talk to each other. Why not try to use some of the deepzoompix stuff that I blogged about yesterday in a better photo sharing interface on Windows Live? - Thomas Hawk
Garin: I've criticized Microsoft MANY times in the past, often when I even worked there. - Robert Scoble
Meryn, I like how they rotate the photos a bit as well. But the thing is that some of my Flickr photos don't show thumbnails at all and when they do it's only 2 images or so. That's a very incomplete way to view Flickr photos. They'd do better to show 5 or 7 or so photos and then with a link to expand them, sort of like how, well, FriendFeed does. - Thomas Hawk
And for Pete's sake, why in the hell are the advertising on this network right now? They can't be generating any significant revenue from this without critical mass and it only makes the site look uglier and more spam like. Better to first see if they can get it jumpstarted and then introduce ads later. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas, Windows Live has critical mass. - Jamie
I don't know Jamie. It feels pretty dead to me. Maybe they do and I just don't see it. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas, I suspect you don't have a big network on WL as you don't use it... hence the lack of activity you might have experienced. But in terms of users i'm fairly sure it has > 100M each month worldwide. Whatever way you cut it that's critical mass and more than justifies the placement of ads. Microsoft isn't a startup hoping for an acquisition - it's products need to be monetizable. (disclaimer - I work for MS) - Jamie
Jamie, you could be right. I have no idea of what the numbers are on the service. I know I get hundreds of people adding me as a contact a month on FriendFeed and Twitter and lots on Facebook as well, but I think I might have gotten one person who added me as a contact on Windows Live last month. I tried to be active on it honestly for a couple of months but was mostly frustrated by how onerous the licensing terms were on photography there. - Thomas Hawk
Marco-Facebook is the largest and most engaged social network out there. 200M active users, countless page views... and they got there by having an excellent product that was innovative for the time. Yet they've pretty much always had advertisements. So I don't believe lack of ads is really a factor here (so long as they aren't obtrusive of course).. more about just having a killer product. I love the clean UI of FriendFeed but would not begrudge the founders a little coin if they decided to introduce ads. - Jamie
It lacks personality compared to friendfeed - Alan Le
I do not work on the product Thomas so have little knowledge of the photo licensing terms. Something I will definitely have to look into though. In respect to usage I know it has a lot of traction in other parts of the world...Europe and Asia for instance where it sees a lot of activity. - Jamie
i don't like and use microsoft's social networking thing.. - Sinem Co
Microsoft want to generate its own facebook, not just ff. - sunipeyk
MS is still trying to roll out the features they ripped off from friendster. - Brian Bufalo
They will create a service that will raise awareness but they won't become a destination - Joe Dawson
It's central profile war! - Ninh Nguyen
Boy everyone is trying to copy FF ... grrr! But hey, that is the best form of flattery right? - Susan Beebe
For the record, the first webwide aggregator was Plaxo Pulse, launched in the summer of 2007. :) - John McCrea
no they arn;t - Zafarali
Fairly sure Jaiku was doing this stuff earlier than Summer 07 John. - Jamie
Thomas, I don't think Windows Live Photos is targeting professional photographers like yourself - it's a more of a consumer-oriented product. But for consumers, it's not that bad. It gives you 25 GB of free storage for files & photos. - Sarah Perez
I actually use Live Photos to run "proof" photos by clients so they are separate from my usual Flickr stream. Once they pick the ones they like, I fix them up and upload the correct resolution in a new gallery and nuke the proofs. Using it from Live Photo Gallery is a snap. Fb sucks for pictures because they rape and pillage all my hard-won pixels... but more people see them there, so I load up Flickr and Fb in parallel. - Gregg Le Blanc
I think Windows live generally does everything in the last when everyone is already done with the concept. They steal the idea and provide it to the users in case some return to Windows Live. I am not sure how many uses all the Live services as their primary id or the service they would go to first. They might be OK with Windows OS (even though I doubt there too) but for web services... more... - Anurag Bansal from Nambu

NYPD Issues “Photography is Not a Crime” Reminder Order to Cops - http://thomashawk.com/2009...
Grand Central Station
“Faced with complaints from photographers and tourists alike, the NYPD has issued a department order reminding cops that the right to take pictures in the Big Apple is as American as apple pie. “Photography and the videotaping of public places, buildings and structures are common activities within New York City . . . and is rarely unlawful,” the NYPD operations order begins. It acknowledges that the city is a terrorist target, but since it’s a prominent “tourist destination, practically all such photography will have no connection to terrorism or unlawful conduct.” - Thomas Hawk
eventually....but they also need to pass the order down to the security guys who take care of these old buildings... remember the MOSS situtation in CA ? - Peter Dawson
They need to get this message across to the over-officious bunch over this side of the pond too. - Mark H
The security guards will soon get the message when they try to 'call the cops' to back them up on their bullying tactics and get told it is not a crime... or am I just looking through rosey glasses ;) - travispuk
yeah, my own experience has mostly been that the security guards are generally speaking a lot worse than the cops. Hopefully the security guard problem can be addressed in time as well. - Thomas Hawk
I wish more cities would issue this sort of reminder! Good for NY - hopefully this will eventually trickle down to other cities and security personnel. - Jennifer Dittrich
Amazing! Great. - Evan Travers
It's amazing when protest and complaints actually work. Great news! - Blake Caldwell
I've been accosted in the Washington DC Metro for taking photos. Curiously, I was only asked to leave...never to delete what I had taken. - Ryan Kaisoglus

no doubt. i'm always blocking apps. i don't want play around with hatchlings or pieces of flair or get involved in any dang food fights. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
That right there is the biggest reason I can't stand Facebook and I would dump it in a heartbeat if it didn't mean that all of my family and distant friends would instantly have a shitfit. - SOMEBODY!
Also - Facebook = "Real life Friends". If you only friend people you're actually friends with it's actually a terrific application for keeping in touch. If you try to treat it like a Friendfeed/Twitter/MySpace then you wind up with a load of crap and its utility takes a nose dive. - Eric P
PREACH!! - Derrick
thankfully i've avoided this kind of garbage - chrisofspades
I didn't add them. They are invitations. - Thomas Hawk
Totally agree with you. couldn't have said it better. - Karoli
@Haggis: Agreed. And I too block pretty much every app invite I get. The irritating part is when someone gets all uppity with me because I didn't return their snowball or superpoke them back. I'm like...srsly? You send me that ridiculous crap and then have the nerve to get mad at ME for not participating? - SOMEBODY!
I am blocking most apps, because things can get outta hand ... - Rene, Pro Button Pusher
@Amanda: I tell/have told all my friends that they can send those requests, but that I categorically deny all of them. It's surprising how that already decreases the number of requests. - Rene, Pro Button Pusher
I do get tired of all that crap. My bro sent me a video to watch on Farcebook a few days ago, but to see it I would have to download yet another silly wall. I don't need more than one, nor do I need to install multiple calendars so you can see when my birthday is. Go to my profile. - Ian May
For every app invite i block, i seem to get twice as many the following day. Its better now their not all over people profiles pages when they do get added though. - Simon Wicks
Thomas - I think you're really gettign confused between Facebook and these leeches trying to suck off the Facebook platform. Just ignore them and these requests would never appear. Or better yet - DEfriend anyone who would be so stupid as to include you on a list of requests. JUST DUMP THEM - and everything will be fine. - Marc Canter
But seriously...you really should accept my Pirates vs. Ninjas request. - Adam
You're just waaaay too popular, Tom ;-) - Dave Fortheloss
Yep. I put a moratorium on adding apps and made that abundantly clear, but I still get all the cr@p. - Julie Barrett from twhirl
this is just one example of the silliness and boring nature of facebook. Frankly it's just not engaging. There's so much wrong with it and this is just the start. FriendFeed is a far superior platform for probably 100 different reasons. - Thomas Hawk
I have found that blocking invites from certain users and applications is very helpful. - Adam
@Thomas I agree with you 100%. I think FB is near unusable.. You're right it's not engaging - it's more of a distraction and there's very little value proposition for me to connect with people. I get the same with email/IM/flickr.. FF is far superior in my estimation - andy brudtkuhl
that's just crazy! insane! crazy?...insane? - .LAG liked that
Holy crap and I cry when I see 3 of them on my bar. - Anika
Just looked at this and confirmed that I have no interest in joining Facebook. - TranceMist
I'm not a fan of the tons of virtual goods and apps either, but I've got tons of friends who would qualify as "normal people" and cannot imagine living without FB. It's a rich way for them to keep in touch with people. I like FF a bunch but I also recognize the bandwagon effect that exists with FB. - Cecyl Hobbs

I've just been blocking all Facebook apps. - Morton Fox
Are you shitting me? wow I don't even get that much action on Facebook. - Patrick from twhirl
INSANE Bro! - Francis Aldana
@Morton Fox: I do the same. Problem is that you have to opt out of each crappy app that anyone you know has managed to dig up. If you don't log in often and deal with these head-on, the simple act of opting out can be daunting. - Keith McCammon
It's striking how many people hate Facebook who nevertheless for various reasons feel unable to abandon it -- not so much a virus as a fungus. It's depressing to think that due to network lock-in my daughter may be stuck on it for years to come. - Tim Ostler
something will come along to replace it. it's the inevitability of things. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
I don't get why people who don't like apps don't block them all, or why people who do like them feel the need to send invites to everyone, let alone whine that you haven't accepted. Most apps I use have a button that shows your friends with the app, and I only send to those. - Pixie
@Keith IIRC there's a greasemonkey script that lets you block them all at once. - Pixie
Yep. Stuff like that's why I get the heebie jeebies about 5-10 mins after logging into Facebook. - Susan A. Kitchens
Ahhhhhh, the voice of reason! I'm so glad I'm not alone. - Rob Fahrni

This post is what made me finally deactivate my Facebook account. I've had enough. - Rochelle
aw man, what happened to the flickr image? - Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
yep, I just IGNORE these types of apps/notifications- I have SO many sent to me and I would literally need to quite my job to attend to them full-time. It's insane. I think 95% of them are a waste of time imho... there are always going to be those people who love to do the spamming but it doesn't mean you need to pay attention to them :) One part of FB that I also do not love. - Deanna Belle Govoni
This is one of the big reasons why I try and limit friends to people I know in person, and a few others who I can trust to not act like invite-wielding idiots. - Chris Charabaruk
that's crazy! - K.D.
Why would you blame facebook for you having idiot friends? - Richard Lawler
Who ever said Facebook is cool? It's a rambling mess suitable only for people with lots of spare time and nothing else to do with it. - Todd Brunner from twhirl
shit like that is what makes me hate FB. they need an option saying "please auto ignore all invites from everyone". i used to have a greasemonkey script which did it, but the bloody things are getting smarter - Terry O'Fee
Richard: Who said I have idiot friends? Intelligence has nothing to do with people trying to share their fave FB apps with everyone else, especially before Facebook put in limitations to keep apps from spamming their users' friends. - Chris Charabaruk
Thing is, once burned, twice shy. So only people I can trust to not send me lots of invites get to be friended to me on Facebook. - Chris Charabaruk
it's just some people. i know great people who forward every single email online. there's one person, ive given her an old yahoo email adress so i dont hurt her feelings :P - Terry O'Fee
Smart people catch on to spamming apps quickly, they recognize when they've been spammed, instead of signing up and passing them along, or continuing to request you join (insert game of the week.) If your friends can't figure out what's annoying to you, how can you expect Facebook to? - Richard Lawler
immediately block app requests as they come in! according to the picture there were not so many apps involved here, but blocking them from the beginning on spares you more invitations.. - Johannan Edelman
I thought my FaceBook was bad when requests piled up, but you definitely win! I don't feel quite so irritated about it, now ;o) - Seth Greenblatt

Aman: Sad to see I'm not the only one who suffers so. - Chris Charabaruk
WOAH! You know, I think it is funny, I removed ALL my apps the other day, AND told all my friends that I removed my apps, and they are STILL sending me app invites. If you keep up on it, it's fine. If you don't, it looks like this... /sigh - Danielle Closs
Holy Facebook Crap Batman! - Zulema ❧ spicy cocoa tart
Some apps are good but most are just spam. Good apps are hard to find but there are a few nice ones out there, I like the ff app and the twitter app. I also use the slayers app and the compare people app. I'm a little shallow. - Wesley Robin Guerrero

Thanks for the pic Thomas, you've reaffirmed my decision to ignore all the app requests I get from friends with too much time on their hands. - pitlord from twhirl
Use http://www.ignoreall.com/ Cleans up everything in a jiffy. - jho
I like FF for commenting on stories and seeing a discussion. I like FB for smaller discussions. FF bigest minus for me is the lack of a notification if someone specifically responds to me. - ChiliMac
That's a big list... I'm getting tired of hitting the ignore as well. - Gary Gifford Jr
I'd be a rich man if if I got a penny for everytime I click ignore. I'm just not making that much use out Facebook nowadays! That's why I decided to give FriendFeed a test trial. - Vincent Nguyen
This is why they made the block function, I've blocked over 500 applications and I don't get many requests anymore. I promise, it works. - Aaron Myers
It looks like facebook just threw up on your screen, IGNORE ALL!! And back away slooowly... - Peter To
I don't get it. I have 600+ friends on FB (not crazy huge, but not an insubstantial number). About once a week, I do a combo of ignore-app's and ignore-all-apps from a few friends, and voila! In about 1-2 minutes, I'm all set. 1-2 minutes a week. How many friends do you have on FB, Thomas? And how many years has it been since you've cleared things out? While I think FB shares some of the blame, is this situation any different than not cleaning *anything else* out once in a while? - Adam Lasnik

They don't shoot lasers out? Are you SURE!? ;-) - Jordan Hofker
Can I get a laser to put on my Nikon? Might come in handy if I need to defend myself. - Tom Kimmerer
Thomas, your Canon may not shoot lasers, so perhaps you should check out Nikon if you want that feature. :P - Kreg Steppe
Could they have mistaken laser for an auto focus assist light - Rory
In all fairness, that laser was most probably just the autofocus assist lamp, which I suspect even the 5DII has and many people don't even know they can turn it off. It might not kill the fish, but it can scare them. - michele
What about the lasers on the freaking sharks' heads? - Alastair Montgomery
Actually, a permit system wouldn't be a bad idea (if it was free and without prejudice). I always consult the museum/gallery staff before firing away but still suffer the sideways glances and farrowed brows from the attendants. At least at the point of entry, the policies could be stated clearly before an incident could occur. - Johnny
But what if I shoot lasers out of my eyes? When I'm taking a photo, surely the laser is going through the camera and into the fish, right? o_O - Robert DeBord
Michelle, actually the 5D or the 5D M2 do not have an autofocus assist lamp. - Thomas Hawk
Maybe they should have signs prohibiting laser pointers, in case a teacher brought a class there on a field trip. Otherwise, I don't run across many lasers while I'm out and about in a museum. - William Beem
On a recent holiday I shot at Underwater World. Although I knew it was ok, I asked the reception about photography. The lady said "That's fine, just no flash photograhy". I asked here why and she replied "Honestly, cause it won't work. The light bounces off the glass and ruins people's photos. We use to get complaints about it all the time"... She also mentioned that by the time the light penetrates the glass and the water, it is no brighter than the fluorescent light bulbs they use to light the tanks. - Johnny
ahhhh. the aquarium. i remember 2 or 3 laides were so busy telling us NOT to take pictures (even though we did not use a flash) -- that they missed the beauty around them. its too bad, really. - Plug1
In general I agree with your post. But most cameras do use this auto focus assist light. On many cameras it is red or green or something other than white. Nikon uses a white light that is quite bright. My brother & I were shooting a fire juggling tightrope walking guy in Key West last year. Before he got on the wire he told everyone not to use a flash. My brother wasn't planning on using one but the autofocus light really bothered the guy and he about attacked him before I showed him how to turn it off. - gfurry

About New York - No Photo Ban in Subways, Yet an Arrest - NYTimes.com - http://www.nytimes.com/glogin...
"Finished with his camera, Mr. Taylor, 30, was about to board the train when a police officer called to him. He stepped back from the train. “The cop wanted my ID, and I showed it to him,” Mr. Taylor said. “He told me I couldn’t take the pictures. I told him that’s not true, that the rules permitted it. He said I was wrong. I said, ‘I’m willing to bet your paycheck.’ ” Mr. Taylor was right. The officer was enforcing a nonexistent rule. And if recent experience is any guide, one paycheck won’t come close to covering what a wrongful arrest in this kind of case could cost the taxpayers. Twice in the last five years, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority proposed a ban on photography in the subways as an antiterrorism measure. And in 2007, the city proposed severe restrictions on filming in the city streets, but retreated when visual artists and activists gathered 26,000 signatures on petitions of opposition within a few weeks. Both times that the transportation authority tried to ban photography, it, " - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet

Once the cops get a bug up their ass, they just keep on pressing. They won't back down to the People. In their mind, it would show weakness and a lack of control. This has nothing to do with 9/11 or terrorism. It's just a power trip. - William Beem
